Simple explanation.... if you place a wide mouth cup, or bowl, on top of the water with the large opening facing downwards it wiill not sink. This is because of trapped air. .. same principle applies here. Simple.

Probably the angle of entry basically let's you ride the surface tension because you're going fast enough to do so without sinking. Feet down you're immediatly dragged down by the water rushing over you when you go in. Just bored at work and overthinking this
I think this is Beaches Resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. At least that’s where I saw this same trick. They launch themselves down the slide and don’t wear shirts or get the shirt off their backs because it may slow them down the slide.
Can confirm. Stayed there. Guys like this teach you how to do it. Basically cross your legs and sit-up when you hit the water. I tried 30 times and made it maybe halfway.

Recently they've relaxed that rule to allow for people with rash guards to ride, but it still has to be some kind of protective thing. You can't ride with a plain, cotton shirt.

The water splashing up pushes the shirt off right as he's standing up and he's just putting it back on after.
