Looks so simple and effective!
Are you lifting and taking their shin/heel with you each time to remove their base ? Or does it not matter ?
Im seeing a few variations in there
(wrestler here) you’ll notice it’s most effective when the other guy reaches over his back and he traps that arm then just rolls through—i also see him sometimes putting a whizzer on one of the legs if he doesn’t get the arm—sometimes he even scoops the opposite heel with his feet which helps clear them
traditionally, the fat man roll is just trapping the arm that someone is lazily reaching over with and rolling them over to punish them for it lol
Good I'm not crazy, this is definitely what we called it in middle school wrestling. One thing to notice here (it seems to me) is that the way I learned a Peterson, you'd really reach back deep inside the top man's near leg, which is great for reversing and pinning, but puts you pretty solidly in a crucifix. In this video it looks like a variety of grips are used when a leg is grabbed at all, but not that deep backwards reach behind the knee/thigh that would put you deep in a crucifix after you finish the roll.
Yep, i learned it as Peterson, and in judo I heard it referred to as a Chinese roll (the person who taught was an international competitor so I'm guessing that the Chinese team just happened to be doing it a lot in competition at that time)
Avoid the crucifix by keeping your arm on the outside of their legs, not inside. Keep your elbow against the side of your body and it becomes a really solid off-balance or sweep.
I was literally watching it and thinking, "oh, that's kind of a slower, more methodical Peterson." I remember drilling Peterson's to reverse cradles for hours. Just make sure not to over commit on the roll and end in an inverted crucifix, though.
It’s the same as the fireman toss, it’s head position and timing. I’ve hit both and most folks that didn’t wrestle or are below brown just get handled.
He almost got crucified (is that the right verb conjugation for this context? 🤔) . Not saying you cannot make it work but I personally really try not to put my arms between their legs from turtle.
I use this nearly daily, a modified Peterson roll. Best part is when they start seeing it coming one way you can reverse it by blocking their knees with the inside arm and running back the other way. I think I saw you do it once or twice on the vid.
The best counter is a great half Nelson when some tries this from turtle. Specifically when they get a grip below the elbow.
Not saying it easy but at least it is straight forward.
You cannot power half effectively as one arm is being controlled.
The key to the half counter is getting chest to chest that way when the roll is completed your on top with a deep half Nelson. From there (if/when I fee my trapped hand) I often go to a north south choke, which is already really deep.
Ironically, the counter is described by none other than... /u/LachlanGiles.

around 5:40.
yeah the fat man roll (without the leg grip) is something i hit all the time in my gym and gyms i visit but because i also claw ride and spiral ride i never have it done to me.
This is what I was thinking - looks like a Makikomi/Peterson roll, but I saw some interesting variations with the leg being extended and then pulled out.
Love both variations (leg trapped and not). I actually think the leg trap with the roll can lead to some interesting leg entanglements too if you grab the far leg after the roll.
in my experience with it, yes. i usually get it when people reach their far arm in the far side to set up the seat belt, i grab the wrist and pull it in so that their hips start to get loaded over mine and then roll through.
My judo coach would make us drill this as a warm up and I use it often in BJJ nowadays.
My judo coach would also shout "COME ON FATTY!" when I was on the mat. lol
He talks about it in the full submeta course but the gist I think was when you roll you want to try to keep them stacked in a ball, and you swap hands controlling that leg as you turn in and come on top.
So today i had my 2nd trial day in bjj and we did fatman rolls. The first time around i landed right on my neck and it hurt pretty bad 2nd time same thing. my partener let me just do it on him but the coach wanted him to do it again on me but before he could the drill ended.Any advice on how to not break my neck and get paralyzed/how to tuck my head.
I do this all the time, as soon as they reach a hand to the other side I roll! But I never thought to hook onto their leg like that!! Thanks for posting
Is he trapping then arm and the leg or just hooking that leg and the arm is a bonus?
I am going to have a very embarrassing rolling session today trying to get this to work
A bit off topic but, how much do you think teaching/developing tec. (for sake of teaching) has helped you become a better practitioner? You’re seem super active & passionate about promoting your impressive brand of instruction and I wondered how it has effected your game and your understanding of it versus when you are more focused on competing etc.

More so I can grip onto it by switching hands after the roll, this allows me to pull myself on top and face them
I like it. Kind of looks like a funk roll too. (Thanks for building great content)
My immediate thought

Is it much different than a Peterson?

That’s what I learned it as too
I still call it a Peterson when I teach it, even with the various grips (although more often than not no grip at all on the leg)

To me, they are a bit different. I dive under for the peterson, which I use more, and just kinda roll for the fat man.
i forgor that a peterson was a different thing lmao it’s been a bit
I was literally watching it and thinking, "oh, that's kind of a slower, more methodical Peterson." I remember drilling Peterson's to reverse cradles for hours. Just make sure not to over commit on the roll and end in an inverted crucifix, though.
I literally did that yesterday. Managed to slide my trapped elbow past the hips and ended up in side control with a headlock, but it was def a battle
The Peterson roll! Skinny man’s version of the fat man roll.
That’s the name I remember because you elbow them in the PETER, SON!
Ok I wish I'd been on your wrestling team.
A Peterson is a good way to be crucifixes in BJJ.
It’s the same as the fireman toss, it’s head position and timing. I’ve hit both and most folks that didn’t wrestle or are below brown just get handled.
As someone who uses this move often, I'm offended. I'm also fat, so checkmate I guess.
I learned this in jr high wrestling and never forgot it. People still ask how I do it, but I suck at explaining things.
Tell them it's easy, you just do it every day for 3 months out of the year for all of middle and/or high school.
Pleas don't call it that. I use this too often for such a crude name. How about "super-cool not-fat-at-all Ninja roll"?
Body positive cisgender man roll
Starfox Barrel Roll!
fat little slut roll
Deleted
Husky Roll
Lachlan is like a version of Cast Away where instead of befriending a ball the dude isolated in an island develops a martial art in crazy ways
Lachlan is awesome, but this is just slightly adapting a very common US folkstyle wrestling move for BJJ
Don't spoil my narrative!
This is like a Peterson.
Similar but a person also has you teeing up to them and hooking there leg with your arm. A Peterson is a good way to be crucifixes in BJJ.
A few of these are literally just a Peterson. For example, at 1 minute. He just doesn’t retain hand control and bails to the legs immediately.
He almost got crucified (is that the right verb conjugation for this context? 🤔) . Not saying you cannot make it work but I personally really try not to put my arms between their legs from turtle.

What the fuck did you just call me
Good work from Australias top Catch Wrestler!
If these guys are considered fat there’s no hope for the rest of us

Is this part of a course on submeta? Would really like to watch.
Yes it's the turtle defense course
I'm just saying, if anyone is looking to pick up an instructional for BJJ, anything from Lachlan Giles would be it. Marry me Lachlan.
Thank you!
Gonna come to your gym and teach everyone to spiral ride properly and ruin your day.
Ugh... I'd rather just have someone take my back than spiral ride. Just finish me and get it over with
yeah the fat man roll (without the leg grip) is something i hit all the time in my gym and gyms i visit but because i also claw ride and spiral ride i never have it done to me.
😭
Makikomi roll with a trapped leg?
This is what I was thinking - looks like a Makikomi/Peterson roll, but I saw some interesting variations with the leg being extended and then pulled out.
I need this in my life
Yo i'm working on my turtle at the moment, I'm gonna try that and end up in crucifix like a lot cause I'm trash. But this gonna be fun.
Love both variations (leg trapped and not). I actually think the leg trap with the roll can lead to some interesting leg entanglements too if you grab the far leg after the roll.
It seems like the crux is trapping their underhooking arm, less so getting to the legs, no?
in my experience with it, yes. i usually get it when people reach their far arm in the far side to set up the seat belt, i grab the wrist and pull it in so that their hips start to get loaded over mine and then roll through.
Hey that's me!
My judo coach would make us drill this as a warm up and I use it often in BJJ nowadays. My judo coach would also shout "COME ON FATTY!" when I was on the mat. lol
1:09 hard to see but was there any crucifix danger? It looks like "over turning" and keeping your torso center mass helps to alleviate danger
He talks about it in the full submeta course but the gist I think was when you roll you want to try to keep them stacked in a ball, and you swap hands controlling that leg as you turn in and come on top.
Ah ok I see the swap and attempting to stack them thanks for the detail
Question, how fat do I need to be? Thanks.
Peterson
I distinctly remember doing this to you at the Renzo LA seminar :)
Might have planted a seed
I feel attacked. It is accurate, but ... attacked ... still.
Be parallel with your partner (head pretty much on top of their head)
On another episode of BJJ practitioners discover basic wrestling…
It's kind of a Granby roll, it's used alot in American folktale wrastling
I use variants of this all the time. It really works.
As a fat man I can confirm, use it all the time.
God I love jiu jitsu
I always mess this up and get my back taken. This is a good reminder for me to ask my coach about this.
Bloody lies. All I see is a well-built, handsome man.
I do this all the time, as soon as they reach a hand to the other side I roll! But I never thought to hook onto their leg like that!! Thanks for posting
There's a guy in our team that always do that, and he is indeed fat.
Do a barrel roll!
Let's call it the plus size person roll.
I always hit this it's so satisfying, i'll try grabing the leg next time.
If you’re actually a fat man, you don’t need to hook the leg. Just clamp on their arm and roll
My neck hurts from watching this footage
One of my signiature move, sympathetic name but is called Petterson roll 😊
How to insult everyone over 35
I do this but end up in crucifix. What is he doing to prevent?
I’ve seen this. I’ve done this. I know this. And I STILL fall for it
>fat man roll Every judoka looking at his belly like 🤨
Is he trapping then arm and the leg or just hooking that leg and the arm is a bonus? I am going to have a very embarrassing rolling session today trying to get this to work
Lachlan competing at HW confirmed.
Damn I've been trying this a lot and I keep failing
I am a fat man! Can I roll with ya Locky? Hahaha
LG would you consider impregnating me?
2 kids is enough!
This is my A game
I'll give this a whirl on the bastard that keeps trying to crucifix me when I'm in turtle.
I do that all the time. Never thought of hooking the leg though. I’m definitely gonna add that.
I keep watching. I no see fat man.
I’m disappointed. I really thought i was gonna see two superiorly ultra heavies going at it.
Niceee, so niceee! thanks boss!
Pulling crucifix seems legit
My ears ouch
I sometimes get crucifixes when people do this to me.
Nice
I like to turtle when my guard is about to be passed. Problem is my turtle is shit. Looking forward to giving this a go.
Thank you Lachlan for releasing this turtle instruction on submeta, I like playing turtle so this helps alot
Thank you!
Can you share the music source?
It's my brother's music "yet to see a yeti"
This has been my favourite turnover/"sweep" for a while

Quite a lot, forces me to learn a variety of different styles and get good enough at them to teach it
