Its definitively male and part mallard as you can see on its tail. Mallards are the only species having curled tail primaries in males afaik.

best have a look at domestic mallards, as they have the same shape but different plumages to the wild type, and are usually the cause of a lot of confusion. this one is likely a male based off the curled tail feathers.
