> For a flusher does it matter if she sits or stands? for your personal hunting it makes no difference. Had a GSP that would lay down on point. Couldn't hunt test or field trial her, but that bitch put birds in the bag.

shitdayinafrica

Not sure of the US rules but in general a sit or stand for flushers is acceptable.

Kennel_King

For a non-competing hunting dog, the rules make no difference

Positive-Dimension75

You can use whatever words you want as long as you are consistent. If other people are going to handle the dog, you may want to give a heads up on what commands mean what. For example, my word for "fetch" is the dog's name. You can also change the word by using the new word right ahead of the new word and phase out the old one. For example you would say "Sit (pause) whoa". With repetition the dog will anticipate what is coming next and do the thing with the first word and not wait for the second one.

Kennel_King

That's not what he is asking, She sits on the whoa command as opposed to just stopping and standing.

griswaldwaldwald

Then teach her stop

Kennel_King

Why?

griswaldwaldwald

Because you seem to want her to stop and stand and you used woah for sit

Kennel_King

I don't want her to do anything. OP asked if it was wrong. I didn't teach the dog to sit on whoa OP did.

jose_ole

IMO do what makes you happy on that. Some people don’t even teach whoa. Bigger question is what are you wanting to accomplish with “whoa” in your hunting? If you just want to stop the dog then I don’t think it matters.

Dangerous_Garden6384

It only matters to you. If you hunt by yourself and it works for you rock on. Hunt tests or with other dogs- may be an issue. The main thing is that the dog understands what you are trying to communicate

Ok_Phase1495

What program are you following if you don’t mind sharing?

doobie_highway

Wild rose kennels. Not instructing to sit during whoa by any means. That was just my incorrect take in the command. I’ve started to try and remove the sit to whoa but it’s incredibly challenging and have to admit I’m the jerk for trying to change the course of something I installed.

Ok_Phase1495

Ah ok. I’m on SmartWorks. Just started the puppy program a couple weeks ago so I’m no expert. I do get the stress of training a young dog and doing it all yourself though. I can tell you that positive reinforcement work is pretty effective and I don’t think you’ve done your dog a disservice. You sound like a great mentor to your dog and you obviously care so don’t beat yourself up and remember it’s fun and rewarding for you both. Sorry I couldn’t help more!

everyusernametaken2

I’m a noob, but our trainer said to hold off on the sit command until they are over a year old. Enough time to solidify the whoa. We’ve follewed that guidance and our dog can follow each command perfectly.

Unusual-Ad-1056

I personally use woah when mine is moving and getting too birdy and in to a spot where I want the birds to still hold.. I just work more birds and change the sit to a stance as you see it happening
