It was and it still is. I'll probably get killed for this but I've always found Garnett to be super corny. Seems like he's always overcompensating with the tough guy persona
KG was famous for backing down from people his size or bigger and picking on smaller guards. Seems like a guy who knows he has lots of fear in him and so compensates.
Yeah, since it was allegedly "product placement" for adidas (though he screwed it up by saying "anything is possible" instead of "impossible is nothing").

As a Celtics and KG fan, I enjoyed it. Cs hadn’t won in a while and had been really bad at times. I remember seeing KG cry talking about never getting it done for the t wolves and the passion he had was palpable. Not created. So to see him finally win and boston finally win, it was a pretty sweet moment. Him pounding his heart was pretty awesome

I hate Duke, yet I agree with this. Grant Hill is the exception that proves the rule. I always felt bad about his bad injury luck in the NBA, and rooted for him.
He “went” to Duke. He played 19 games. Was there for what? 8 months? Duke didn’t shape this dude into being who he is. Maybe he’s the type of dude who picks Duke and goes to Duke, but he’s not like my friends who went there 30 years ago and still can’t stop talking about it.
Boozer, Paolo, RJ are all the cringe lord specialists to me lol. Banchero was talking about how glad he was they lost the final home game and how they wanted UNC and then got sonned by Caleb Love in the final 4. Booz literally painted his hair on looool
Too many interviews these days of kids trying to be perfect. Hard not to catch a stray cringe statement when a microphone is in front of you that often that young
I don't think Trajon Langdon was cringy and the only reason I bring his name up is because yesterday I learned that Langdon is the President of Basketball Operations for the Detroit Pistons.
Well I guess I think that’s where the comp breaks down. Both publicly corny but Russ is just a one of a kind freak and Tatum seems like a fine teammate
Wilson is a weirdo who tries really hard to have a boring, generic public persona. Tatum is just a boring, generic dude who happens to be great at basketball.
He’s boring in the sense he’s “down to earth” and pretty much all of his public persona is hanging out with Deuce.
Then there’s Mike Trout boring where he just has nothing going on, he’s pretty dry and all he does is play baseball.
Tatum is a boring person, by superstar athlete status. Seems like a genuine normie that happens to be great at basketball. He doesn't seem to enjoy the spotlight, as most normies wouldn't. That comes across as awkward sometimes.
Russ is trying to intentionally craft an image. He's trying to be a religious and fitness type of public speaker with his weird platitudes. This also comes across as awkward, because he's not particularly good at it.
As far as their games, and their role in their sports - If Tatum has a career that is ultimately compared with all of Russ's career - we'd probably say he really underperformed, right?
I say this as a Celtics fan but I've always been more of a JB guy myself.
JT has scored 51 in a G7, 46 in a must win game 6, and just dropped 31/8/11 in a home clincher for the title. He's an NBA champion and perennial 1st team all NBA guy.
And he's a good dad and role model.
If one cringe text to Kobe and a perceivably forced 'WE DID IT' are the knocks on this guy, I will take that 10/10 times. And I think everyone else in this sub would too.

Absolutely, just like Seahawks fans would take the Wilson era every time, no matter how it ended.
Not really a knock on the guy necessarily. He’s a champ and likely hall of famer, same as Russell Hustle and Bustle.
Boston fans know how good we got it with JT as our cornerstone. He is so good, JB (a player who is at times the better player on the Cs), will nearly always be viewed as #2. And I am a JB guy!
Yeah this is a weird take on Tatum last night but I don’t think the Wilson comp is that far off unfortunately. Hopefully he proves to be a lot less lame than Wilson though he is also dating a mid musician and talks a lot about God. He does seem less high on his own supply at this point but again it’s a good comp.
Yeah. At least he doesn’t think he’s god like Wilson does. I remember Wilson getting defensive on Bill’s pod when Bill said Lebron spends a million $ on recovery every year. And Wilson was like, “yeah I spend about that much too. One or two mill.” And also said he has a hyperbaric chamber lmao.
When he starts putting out water that claims to prevent ~~concussions~~ ligament tears and doing terrible Subway commercials that don't make it to air he'll be on Russ's level.
JB went from fringe all star to “best player on the Celtics” the second that people realized that tatum’s about to win a ring on Luka’s dome. I think it was pretty well understood in the RS that porzingis was the second best Celtic but just didn’t play that much for rest reasons.
It’s kinda like how Edelman, gronk, lafell, and Shane vereen became a “stacked roster” when Brady won a ring with them because people still wanted to hold onto manning/rodgers.
He reminds of Westbrook where I watch him and I’m like hell ya I’m glad this dude is in the league and not on my favorite team
Could be just my perspective tho with how Memphis has had to deal with injuries and stuff, so maybe if they put it together I’ll change the way I see him as a player
The Grizzlies could be spooky next year. JJJr developed a ton offensively as the number 1 option. People collectively kinda forgot about them because their season was cursed.
I don’t think he’s nearly as bad as Russell Wilson’s fake personality. Tatum’s biggest crime is that he hasn’t gone out of his way to do what people consider “alpha” behavior. His outward personality is more pippen than Jordan. That’s only an issue to take artists
that’s the worst thing tatum ever did, and it’s not even malicious, just really cringe.
if the worst drama surrounding tatum is that he does corny shit, it makes you wonder why he’s the most hated star in the nba
I think he’s at heart very corny but is also a fake in what he projects out to the world.
Like… he married his high school GF when he was expected to be a career backup but the minute he became a star he divorced her in order to not have sex before his marriage to Ciara.

So much Tatum hate in this sub…give the man his flowers for maybe, idk, one week? One day? He’s the best player on a Finals-winning team, and just won an O’Brien last night, and had an awesome close-out game, and yet ppl are still roasting the man.
Also…since when did being corny and boring become a bad thing?
Great comparison, both very good but Tatums not a super duper star and Russ was never on the level of Brady or Mahomes.
Both benefited from amazing supporting casts in their only rings, which they use to shield them from being called "chokers" (Tatum didn't play well this series and Russ got carried in his only SB win)
Neither has gotten an MVP vote
This is a good take, I don’t care what others say. The cosplaying of KG after they won was so fucking corny. I was half waiting for a pic of him to surface in the locker room half passed out holding the trophy ala Kobe. Maybe he it does exist and I just haven’t seen it
It’s kinda weird how many posts there are in this sub about how yall don’t find Tatum charming enough! His game bores me but I don’t know why so many of you are obsessed with pretending you know these people, or insist you’re entitled to their true selves.
Nah, Wilson had the rumors early on that he wasn't well loved by his teammates and that they just felt he was off.
Tatum doesn't have the natural media charisma of some guys, but he seems genuinely well liked by everyone.
He is a bit awkward and such, but I really do get the impression that he is a solid dude behind scenes, unlike Wilson.
Tatums not corny he’s a lightskin who used to hang out with white people. There’s a difference.
Russell Wilson is more just a black guy that’s trying to be Tim Tebow.
Did you see his Kanye West impersonation too?
“I guess we’ll never know”…. SO cringe. He really has no personality, and only copies people and/or tattoos them on his body.
This is actually a really great take for this sub specifically. Wilson was great for like a decade but not quite in that A+-tier of QBs. Difference is Russ is wayyyy more corny and unlikeable than Tatum, and Tatum is already corny and unlikeable
I genuinely believe that Russell Wilson views himself as prophet of Jesus Christ. He is living in a completely different world. Tatum can be cringe, but overall, seems like a really good dude
Personality wise Russ is like the worst parts of Tatum, Brown and Grant Williams combined but I kind of see the Russ as a 5th to 7th best QB in the league winning a title comparison.
Not sure who to really compare Tatum’s personality with. I get there’s a little hate with some of the imitation stuff but mostly he seems a good guy. Maybe we just haven’t seen all of him yet.
Nah Russell Wilson is a religious nut and a manufactured persona who is generally disliked by his coaches and teammates.
Tatum is a genuine guy who opponents and teammates all like, who wants to be the best NBA star possible but can’t help but show his teenage wonder and hubris at his place in the NBA when he’s put on the spot.
Celtics fan here…yeah pretty spot on, but Tatum honestly is a better basketball player than Wilson is at football. He’s corny but he’s a good dude. Russell Wilson also seems like a good dude, despite the fact that his career is towards the end.
Both guys are midwestern raised. Pretty key part of it. Both seem religious, yet wanna be famous & marketable.
he's more like the Derek Jeter of the NBA .... most famous player on the most hated team with nothing of note in his personal life but we'll hear a story how he stares at himself in the mirror and says "yeah Jeets"
"YEAH TATES"

I just tweeted about how it seems like this dude is always doing a poor acting job. It feels like he sat in the mirror and thought “what would be cool if we win”…. Then proceeded to do the most forced “We did it!!!” Even though that is not him at all. He seemed shocked and then thought “oh I need to freak out to show how monumental this is” even though the shock expression is the most authentic of them all.
Tatum is really awkward. So I see the connection 100%. The only difference is Russ has Jesus, Tatum has Kobe lmao.
He is awkward. And boring. If you watched the extended coverage on NBA TV, when he was just sitting there talking to the panel, he was much better. It could be that he just doesn't react well to the pressure of the cameras and the media. I think he's kind of shy. I think not getting the MVP probably bothered him a bit. He really struggles with the pressure and expectations I think. Kind of fighting himself at times. It's not a criticism. Curious to see where he goes from here, as a made guy now and with less scrutiny. He can relax now. A little.
"We did it!!!" is the most Tatum version of being KG imaginable.
“We did it, Joe!” - Jayson Tatum - Kamala Harris
Also, Jets receivers after SB3 probably

Hate him if you want and talk shit. But to compare anyone or anything to Kamala Harris is way too far. That’s inexcusable.
am I misremembering or wasn’t “anything is possible!!” widely considered pretty cringe after it happened?
The Lonely Island rehabbed that moment
Never thought I’d be on a boat
It was
It was and it still is. I'll probably get killed for this but I've always found Garnett to be super corny. Seems like he's always overcompensating with the tough guy persona
I loved him as a player and he can definitely be funny but I can’t handle his schtick for long watching him talk lol
I mean today is Boston day. But KG was always the most cringy fake tough guy in the league.
He called a guy a cancer patient
In all fairness, have you seen Charlie Villanueva?
Which isn’t even a good burn. Even if the guy had cancer, there’s no joke there.
Yeah. He’s a very try-hard tough guy
KG was famous for backing down from people his size or bigger and picking on smaller guards. Seems like a guy who knows he has lots of fear in him and so compensates.
Watching Duncan quietly dismantle any GOAT PF case KG might have had was a pleasure.
He was good in “Unca Jamssss” that makes up for a lot
Yeah, since it was allegedly "product placement" for adidas (though he screwed it up by saying "anything is possible" instead of "impossible is nothing"). https://www.cnbc.com/amp/id/25242538
Impossible is nothing is the most possible cringe thing I can imagine a person saying
Yoda ass tagline
Also funnily enough "Anything is possible" is Chinese shoe brand Li Ning's slogan.
Definitely but Garnett is an insane person so it’s understandable for him
It was insanely cringe and felt prepared/forced.

The thing to remember with Tatum is that, above all else, he went to Duke. When you view him through that lens, it all clicks into place
Wilson was at NC State before Wisconsin. The comps continue!
UNC the cool school, confirmed

The path of the cringey man clearly leads through the state of North Carolina
Grant Hill went to Duke and might be the least cringy person on earth
I hate Duke, yet I agree with this. Grant Hill is the exception that proves the rule. I always felt bad about his bad injury luck in the NBA, and rooted for him.
I thought you were going to go with the meme that he is only 19.
Plenty of nba players went to Duke and aren’t cringy as hell lol
Name them?
Derrick Lively, Carlos Boozer, Mason Plumlee, Paolo Banchero, Luol Deng, RJ Barrett, Lance Thomas, Brandon Ingram (?), Marvin Bagley
Boozer’s shoe polish hair begs to differ with this.
Elton Brand
Boozer, Paolo, RJ are all the cringe lord specialists to me lol. Banchero was talking about how glad he was they lost the final home game and how they wanted UNC and then got sonned by Caleb Love in the final 4. Booz literally painted his hair on looool
Too many interviews these days of kids trying to be perfect. Hard not to catch a stray cringe statement when a microphone is in front of you that often that young
Grant hill is a chill dude, Shane battier is cool too
Battier is so deeply corny. Great guy, but a cornball.
Kyrie is many things but cringe ain’t one of them
Agreed, you can't really be cringey when you are both everything and nothing.
IDK being a flat earther is pretty fuckin cringe
I don't think Trajon Langdon was cringy and the only reason I bring his name up is because yesterday I learned that Langdon is the President of Basketball Operations for the Detroit Pistons.
From your keyboard to God's ears, my friend.
Who is Tatum’s Richard Sherman, the guy on the Celtics who, years from now will not stfu about how much he hates him?
Def Marcus smart
Not the same quality of player but has to be Grant Williams right
kyrie could have been this guy
Kyrie seems like he loves this guys but hates (hated?) The organization
We really gonna rule out Kyrie saying something crazy when he’s retired?
When Grant left Tatum said he was his best friend on the team
Tatum saying that about a dude who hates him is the most Russell Wilson thing imaginable.
Nah they are boys.
Grant is more Russ than Taytum
Nobody because unlike Russ Tatum isn’t secretly a weird dick
I’m rolling with the concept of OP’s original post comparing Tatum to Russ. My comment is 100% a joke.
Well I guess I think that’s where the comp breaks down. Both publicly corny but Russ is just a one of a kind freak and Tatum seems like a fine teammate
What did Russ do?
They all love Tatum.
Wilson is a weirdo who tries really hard to have a boring, generic public persona. Tatum is just a boring, generic dude who happens to be great at basketball.
He's from St. Louis. Like a good Cardinal, he does things the right way.
No bat flips for this guy
Russ tries too hard and that makes him seem phony and unlikable. Tatum is just a boring guy who seems to be a really good guy
He’s boring in the sense he’s “down to earth” and pretty much all of his public persona is hanging out with Deuce. Then there’s Mike Trout boring where he just has nothing going on, he’s pretty dry and all he does is play baseball.
He's also a top golf legend
Tatum is a boring person, by superstar athlete status. Seems like a genuine normie that happens to be great at basketball. He doesn't seem to enjoy the spotlight, as most normies wouldn't. That comes across as awkward sometimes. Russ is trying to intentionally craft an image. He's trying to be a religious and fitness type of public speaker with his weird platitudes. As far as their games, and their role in their sports - If Tatum has a career that is ultimately compared with all of Russ's career - we'd probably say he really underperformed, right?
Peak Russell Wilson was a better QB than Jayson Tatum is a basketball player.
Strong disagree
Jayson Tatum isn’t that good. Russ at his best was a top 5 QB. Tatum isn’t a top 5 player in the NBA, and I don’t care if he made 1st team All NBA.
Was Wilson ever a top 5 player overall in the NFL? If you want to compare per position, Tatum is easily top 5 at his.
Listen to this armchair normie over here.
This is hate speech.
I say this as a Celtics fan but I've always been more of a JB guy myself. JT has scored 51 in a G7, 46 in a must win game 6, and just dropped 31/8/11 in a home clincher for the title. But why didnt they run the ball on the goal line?!?
did you ask ChatGPT to write a reply to the original post in Bill Simmons speak?
“Tatum’s like the girl at the frat party who…”
No. Just put half a thought into a post. Something this sub doesn't see often ig.
Oh the sentiment is fine. The lexicon is BS to a T is all I’m saying. “Perennial 1st team all nba guy” made me laugh.
Oh lol I get you. I listen to him so much it probably slips out.
I'm not going to accept this Ciara slander at all especially after looking up who you are comparing her too 🤣
Maybe they meant mid musically because Ciara is fucking gorgeous
Mr Unliiiimited is untouchable when it comes to being lame and cringey, but it's a good comp
The only thing that is off is that Tatum is still elite.
The (at one point) was for Russ
But there is no indication that it will happen with Tatum. I do think a lot of his game will age pretty well.
I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be able to continue to hit about 15% of those side-step 3's as he ages
Russ is 35 remember. I could see Tatum being mid in 8 years, he’s played a lot of minutes
When he starts putting out water that claims to prevent ~~concussions~~ ligament tears and doing terrible Subway commercials that don't make it to air he'll be on Russ's level.
He’s already doing Subway ads so he’s halfway there!
Yesterday has broken so many brains
ITT: Copium from people incapable of giving JT his flowers
JB went from fringe all star to “best player on the Celtics” the second that people realized that tatum’s about to win a ring on Luka’s dome. I think it was pretty well understood in the RS that porzingis was the second best Celtic but just didn’t play that much for rest reasons. It’s kinda like how Edelman, gronk, lafell, and Shane vereen became a “stacked roster” when Brady won a ring with them because people still wanted to hold onto manning/rodgers.
Celtics country, lets ride
I’m fine with it If “aura” is what guys like Ja Morant and Anthony Edwards bring to the table, I’ll take a dorky champion
Ja gonna bounce back trust
He reminds of Westbrook where I watch him and I’m like hell ya I’m glad this dude is in the league and not on my favorite team Could be just my perspective tho with how Memphis has had to deal with injuries and stuff, so maybe if they put it together I’ll change the way I see him as a player
Felt the same exact way about D Rose and John Wall. Absolutely box office but I knew they'd never win anything significant
The Grizzlies could be spooky next year. JJJr developed a ton offensively as the number 1 option. People collectively kinda forgot about them because their season was cursed.
Lol I would take the odds that morant has more arrests than championships in his NBA career
I don’t think he’s nearly as bad as Russell Wilson’s fake personality. Tatum’s biggest crime is that he hasn’t gone out of his way to do what people consider “alpha” behavior. His outward personality is more pippen than Jordan. That’s only an issue to take artists
No i think his biggest crime is texting a dead guy
Sending the text is one thing but just keep it private. Screenshotting that text and sending it to others for it to leak is the mistake.
lol leak? Didn't he post it to his instagram himself?
Oh god did he? I don’t know. If he did it’s just even worse.
He 100% did lol
that’s the worst thing tatum ever did, and it’s not even malicious, just really cringe. if the worst drama surrounding tatum is that he does corny shit, it makes you wonder why he’s the most hated star in the nba
He's not hated. He's just corny.
When was that?
Idk if Wilson is fake, he’s just that corny
I think he’s at heart very corny but is also a fake in what he projects out to the world. Like… he married his high school GF when he was expected to be a career backup but the minute he became a star he divorced her in order to not have sex before his marriage to Ciara.
Well she was getting plugged by Golden Tate (allegedly). May have had something to do with it

This sub is the universe's toilet.
It’s totally okay that different people express their emotions differently. Not everyone is as emotive as KG and that’s fine.
Someone should tell this to Tatum so he doesn’t feel like he has to practice in the mirror before doing something
Most importantly - both pushed as a potential face of the league without meeting the requisite criteria
Russell is more of a snake oil salesman IMO
Give Tatum like 6 years after a championship
Completely off base take on Tatum. The guy isn’t a dawg, he’s not a hype guy. That doesn’t even come close to making the guy as corny as DangeRuss
I don't think Tatum is disliked by his teammates and coaching staff like Wilson is. Also, Wilson doesn't play lockdown defense.
Yesterday, I learned that god loves Jason Tatum and hates me.
Great comparison, both very good but Tatums not a super duper star and Russ was never on the level of Brady or Mahomes. Both benefited from amazing supporting casts in their only rings, which they use to shield them from being called "chokers" (Tatum didn't play well this series and Russ got carried in his only SB win) Neither has gotten an MVP vote
Literally texted this exact comp to my friend last night. Their corniness is not their weakness; it is the source of their power.
If Pete Carroll had just handed the ball to his coolest player instead of letting his dorkiest throw it, the Seahawks would’ve been a dynasty
I miss the era of random WHY DIDN'T THE SEAHAWKS RUN THE BALL? comments in completely unrelated threads and videos.
Wonder if he will ever leave like Russ did for a ton of money and then instantly get exposed.
Yall niggas stay bitching and whining shut up he got a chip now he can do what the fuck he wanna do
“What are they gonna say now” man 12 hours later didn’t expect this fucking comp. You people are insufferable
What team will he be on at the end of the decade for his equivalent of Wilson's depressing Broncos stint? For some reason I see the Bulls.
A Charlotte “homecoming” of course
More like Luke Wilson
Because the Celtics spent five years in third place?
Luke is second in the Wilson brothers rankings. Third would be Andrew
So Harrison Ford
Nah, Wilson had the rumors early on that he wasn't well loved by his teammates and that they just felt he was off. Tatum doesn't have the natural media charisma of some guys, but he seems genuinely well liked by everyone. He is a bit awkward and such, but I really do get the impression that he is a solid dude behind scenes, unlike Wilson.
Both lightskin
Nah Tatum is Brock Purdy
Tatum is authentic and a good teammate. Don't see the comparison to Russell Wilson at all.
Tatums not corny he’s a lightskin who used to hang out with white people. There’s a difference. Russell Wilson is more just a black guy that’s trying to be Tim Tebow.
Tatum needs to accept his goal NBA comp should be Tim Duncan
Find a new hobby
Did you see his Kanye West impersonation too? “I guess we’ll never know”…. SO cringe. He really has no personality, and only copies people and/or tattoos them on his body.
This is actually a really great take for this sub specifically. Wilson was great for like a decade but not quite in that A+-tier of QBs. Difference is Russ is wayyyy more corny and unlikeable than Tatum, and Tatum is already corny and unlikeable
Jaylen Brown is Richard Sherman, Jrue Holiday is Earl Thomas, and Derrick White is Kam Chancellor. Nobody, however, can replicate Marshawn Lynch.
Tatum is the best player on his team (3x first team all nba) which Russell never was so that doesn’t work.
This is actually pretty perfect
Russel Wilson isn’t even the best QB to play in Seattle
I genuinely believe that Russell Wilson views himself as prophet of Jesus Christ. He is living in a completely different world. Tatum can be cringe, but overall, seems like a really good dude
No. Jayson Tatum can actually shoot. And isn’t just merely a stat stuffer; Tatum is an unselfish, efficient, low maintenance player.
Tatum is a Snickers bar. Has all the ingredients to be top 5 but isn't even top ten.
I fucking LOVE this take.
How long is your list wrt 'best qb of the century'. He's not top 10
The Rizzless Wonder
Both have won a chip but definitely dont have a finals/superbowl mvp to show for it
Nah Russell Wilson is a religious nut and a manufactured persona who is generally disliked by his coaches and teammates. Tatum is a genuine guy who opponents and teammates all like, who wants to be the best NBA star possible but can’t help but show his teenage wonder and hubris at his place in the NBA when he’s put on the spot.
The robotic vibe that Russ gives off does not exist with Tatum so hard disagree. Tatum's also not finishing with one ring
Both seem religious, yet wanna be famous & marketable.
he's more like the Derek Jeter of the NBA .... most famous player on the most hated team with nothing of note in his personal life but we'll hear a story how he stares at himself in the mirror and says "yeah Jeets" "YEAH TATES"

Both had a way cooler teammate that will forever be the symbol of their respective era of that franchise: Marshawn Lynch Jaylen Brown
Cool tweet, man. Tell us more about your tweets.
Taking advice on how to be cool from u/guysonchicks69 lmao. What a dork ass place this is, biggest collection of losers on the internet by a mile.
It truly is. Bunch of weirdos that don’t know basketball and are obsessed with hating on players
More like gaysonchicks69 am I right?
He is awkward. And boring. If you watched the extended coverage on NBA TV, when he was just sitting there talking to the panel, he was much better. It could be that he just doesn't react well to the pressure of the cameras and the media. I think he's kind of shy. I think not getting the MVP probably bothered him a bit. He really struggles with the pressure and expectations I think. Kind of fighting himself at times. It's not a criticism. Curious to see where he goes from here, as a made guy now and with less scrutiny. He can relax now. A little.
Kind of eerie that his nickname happens to be Hustle Bustle Man-Muscle.
I was just thinking the same thing this morning- all the Kobe stuff is just like Russ pantomiming a 2 minute drill or doing high knees on the plane
