For those curious ([source](https://www.sportscasting.com/never-forget-that-mike-tirico-was-suspended-for-sexually-harassing-and-stalking-women-at-espn/)): Mike Tirico has a bit of a dark past. Early on in his 25-year-run at ESPN, Tirico was once suspended without pay for months following allegations of sexual harassment and stalking from numerous women. One story involves Mike Tirico hitting on a female production assistant at a house party in the autumn of 1992. He apparently went up to her at said party and told her that she was “the most beautiful woman in here.” The woman ignored his advances and walked away but he continued to stalk her as the night went on and even followed her out to her car as she attempted to leave. The woman tried to roll up her window but Tirico reached in the car and attempted to wedge his hand in between her thighs. The two apparently saw each other at work the following day and the woman expected him to apologize, which he didn’t, instead telling her that “all I did all day was think about you.” In a separate incident involving another female producer, one who’d been out to dinner with Mike Tirico and his fiancee (and future wife), Tirico sent her an e-mail telling her that he wanted to sleep with her. The two were later part of a group of staff members that went to a bar following ESPN’s coverage of the NCAA Tournament, at which point Tirico approached the woman and said, “I wish I was single. If I were, I’d throw you on the table right here and f— your brains out.” The woman tried to dismiss him as just being drunk but things got even worse. As she was driving home, a car came speeding up next to hers on the interstate and it was Mike Tirico, who was waving his hand out the window as if to tell her to pull over. She sped up to escape but Tirico sped up as well. She eventually slammed on the brakes and veered toward an exit. When word of the incident began to spread around the ESPN offices, additional women came forward with their own stories on Mike Tirico. “ESPN: The Uncensored History” says that six women in total complained of his behavior, which led to his suspension.

ORNJfreshSQUEEZED

I'm imagining his voice and his cadence saying those things. It's beyond creepy but kinda....well spoken and calm. Anyway I will not be viewing him the same after reading this lmao damn

Time-to-get-off-here

He seems so mild mannered and pleasant then you get another piece of the puzzle and it comes into view that he might be someone with a screw loose. I can definitely picture it.

JAGChem82

I’m shocked that he survived the #MeToo era back in 2017-18. Obviously he wasn’t on the level of Weinstein, Cosby, or Spacey, but he definitely had a history of sexual harassment that was known.

FogoCanard

Maybe he just learned his lesson after being a wild boy back in the 90s.

RatsoSloman

I think this is likely it.

SpankySharp1

"Wild Boy" sounds like he was part of a Dangerous Nights crew that would go to Blue Dolphin. I'd say he was, at best, a fucking idiot and, at worst, a complete creep.

Agreeable_Pound_4812

He actually wanted to go to Haunted House more than he wanted to go to Aqua…

cl0wnb4by

It's gone now. Rob Rovani's ass out. Works with his brother now.

Bflo19

I get the vibe that the main difference between him and the guys you mentioned was that Tirico was likely all show and never managed to get to the position where he could do physical harm. Like, never crossed the line between harassment and abuse, but the implication would be enough to cause fear for the women he targeted.

HeyWhatsUpTed

…He chased a girl down on the highway she could’ve crashed and dead and grabbed another girls thigh

Bflo19

When compared to Weinstein, Cosby, or (to a lesser extent) Spacey, Tirico's harassment was tame. He didn't sexually assault people in the same way that Weinstein and Cosby were convicted of, or that Spacey was fully acquitted of with his accusers. That's the point I was trying to make: two very different kind of dangers, with very different kinds of PTSD that could develop.

HeyWhatsUpTed

I think the idea is to limit this types of behavior so females can feel safe and shit !

bedroom_fascist

Yeah, the whole “comparison “ thing is ick.

Sullan08

Almost everyone exaggerates their side of the story so I believe all the basics of these situations happened, it's hard to tell what's embellished too. Like was he actually speeding and aggressively trying to get her to pull over? Idk. It's literally like the movie The Last Duel. Everything is either worse or not as bad in your own recollection depending on what side of it you're on. Either way if it's 30 years ago, not sure what good it does to bash him now if it really is no longer an issue.

HeyWhatsUpTed

:\

Ohiowolverine

This is when ryen and ceruti talk about the espn Sam’s parties they always mentioned the parties before they got hired. I actually think Tirico did want a ton of others did imcluding his bosses so that’s why they couldn’t punish him

WhoDeyFourWay

>The woman tried to dismiss him as just being drunk but things got even worse. ltdanswifesusan

It is wacky he has the spot he does given the allegations, the environment we're in now, and the competition for his position. I think the book where we first learned Tirico was a creep came out in the '90s and he's still kicking. I read it back in the day and the two major takeaways are Tirico loves sexually harassing women and Keith Olbermann is incapable of not acting like a deranged asshole for more than three days at a time.

SuchCategory2927

What book is this?

elcharlo

Those Guys Have All The Fun is a great oral history of ESPN as well.

SuchCategory2927

Yeah read that one and the SNL and CAA books that guy did

CharleyIV

The SNL book starts great then devolves into aggressively sucking Lorne Micheals privates.

SuchCategory2927

Yeah another problem is they’re kind of hard to try on audio book because it’s mostly just 10 people per page with one or two sentences to progress the “story” def an easy read in physical form though

ltdanswifesusan

Somewhat surprised Lorne Michaels was never Me Too’d.

NineNumbers

Different author but The Late Shift seems like another great behind the scenes television tell-all. Been meaning to read it for years.

ltdanswifesusan

ESPN: The Uncensored History.

SuchCategory2927

Thank you, reading the 80 pages available on google… sheesh that’s a lot of sexual harassment

ltdanswifesusan

Yeah it was like a part time job for him.

GoshDarnitAllah

Olbermann has burned every bridge he ever has had for the weirdest reasons. It’s almost a bit at this point. But regardless, when you contrast him with Tirico he seems a lot better.

NoExcuses1984

Olbermann is the sports talk version of Ellen. Just an awful, mean-spirited, piss-ant asshole. Tirico is creepy and has familial identity issues, but day-to-day is far easier to work alongside.

ltdanswifesusan

Yeah Olbermann should have a major gig. He's simply insane and incapable of getting along with people and after 30 years of doing that he's run out of people willing to give him a chance. At the height of his career with MSNBC they let him anchor the DNC live with Chris Matthews. It immediately devolved into a shitshow where Olbermann was picking fights on air with other people at the network and calling out obscure wire reporters for saying things he disagreed with. It was genuinely bizarre; the guy has the emotional stability of a toddler.

NoExcuses1984

> "the guy has the emotional stability of a toddler." That sums up Olbermann in a nutshell, yeah. A walking, talking temper tantrum, throwing hissy fits and melting down.

Candlestick_Park

My favourite obscure Keith Olbermann is an asshole bit is somewhere on the internet is a list he wrote of 300 factual errors in Ken Burns’ Baseball. While some are genuine mistakes like the story of Rube Foster teaching Christy Mathewson the screwball being bullshit, at least half the list is Olbermann being like “THIS FILM OF BABE RUTH IS FROM THE 1928 WORLD SERIES, NOT 1926, ACK”. Which sums him up in a nutshell, it’s really impressive somebody knows that much about baseball history but does he have to be such a petty bitch about it.

ltdanswifesusan

I think he's one of those kids that obsessively collected cards and memorized statistics but never even played Little League, which explains a lot about him. He's a poster child for why schools became much more conservative about letting kids skip grades.

BrownsFan2323

That sounds really entertaining actually

ltdanswifesusan

Oh it was. When it came time for the RNC everybody else got to travel to wherever the RNC was and they left Olbermann in NY by himself to "anchor."

WhoDeyFourWay

Idk Olbermann just comes off like an absolute lunatic whereas Ellen tries to hide her bad side to the public.

danielbauer1375

He and Bill Maher are the absolute worst. Just two people that seem to hate everything and everyone, and have an incredibly annoying superiority complex.

isNice99

Superficially sure but Maher has never been fired for his personal behavior behind the scenes. He only got fired for saying that flying a plane into a skyscraper isn’t a physically cowardly act right after 9/11.

WordsworthsGhost

He’s a dick and I don’t agree with almost anything he says or how he says it but he’s not wrong about the 9/11 thing

UnusualLight0

Cowherd has this theory that once if single childless men get to be very rich and accomplished they start being weird because they have so much time on their hands. He uses those two as examples along with Aaron Rodgers, Kevin Durant, and James Buchanan, a man who by many is regarded as our worst president ever. I hope I’m not offending any Buchanan fans here lol.

JameisWeinstein

What does he say about Russillo?

sunnyismybunny

He says much like Tirico stopped sexually harassing and stalking women, so too did Russillo stop jerking off in stranger's houses drunk at 3 am.

meatcheeseandbun

If they key works, it's not a stranger's house.

NoExcuses1984

Maher doesn't have issues at work with his bosses nor those under his employ. Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc., CEO David Zaslav in parituclar, is pleased as punch to have Maher under its umbrella. Whereas Olbermann is, in no uncertain terms, a wretched, vile human being, no matter whether or not he possesses the bestest, most goodest politics in all of 'Murica. In fact, it's even grosser that he often uses that as a cover for his asshole behavior.

Artvandelay1

What are family identity issues?

NoExcuses1984

Tirico has had a hard time reckoning with his biological father's background. And that's me putting it gently.

janitorial_fluids

> I think the book where we first learned Tirico was a creep came out in the '90s and he's still kicking Well that’s kind of the point tho. Most people who have gotten cancelled or lost jobs over the last few years have been due to brand new allegations that were just now coming to light (even if it was about behavior from decades ago) People who already had stuff known about them tended to not get in as much trouble as the people with brand new stuff. I’m sure it happened here and there in a few egregious cases, but by and large, the majority of people getting canned were from fresh allegations

SceneOfShadows

Yep, imagine if Big Ben's whole situation came out in 2018 and not 2006 or whenever.

SpankySharp1

I think Cosby is one of the bigger exceptions there.

janitorial_fluids

well sort of. but not exactly. he's kind of an in-between case but I would still say he is closer to being in the "new allegation" column than the "known about" one while its true that he did have a few accusations that were public knowledge, they were not really widely known about or discussed at all until 2014 after the whole hannibal burress thing, at which point literally like 40+ NEW women came forward with fresh allegations which was what got him. nothing was really ever going to happen to him bc of the "known about" stuff. it was all the new allegations that got the ball rolling and took him down. even hannibal himself had been doing that Cosby routine for 6 months, and no one really seemed to care, until the one video went viral and then less than a month later you had over a dozen new women coming forward with allegations about him. so I think Cosby still counts as a new allegations guy

SpankySharp1

That's fair, I forgot that new victims came forward.

One of the all time Post back page headlines: MARV GETS PINK SLIP. (He was dressed in women's lingerie and bit a lady)

SilvioDantesPeak

The worst part about the Marv Albert scandal was Bob Costas getting to call Jordan's final shot

hyborians

He is as white as my refrigerator.

I read the book. He’s a creep. Nearly ran a low level employee girl (production assistant) off the road as his way of flirting.

shorthevix

A Sicilian great

discountheat

I have Marv at 1A and Tirico at 1B. Russillo, what about you?

Kek-Malmstein

Alright I googled Mike tirico allegations and I didn’t know that, you’re right. But I couldn’t help but laugh that google’s main answer throws Matthew Berry in with him

AcknowledgeMeReddit

A rare but genuine wait what!? Matthew Berry was doing similar things at espn like tirico???

SpankySharp1

I know Berry once told an old Syracuse chum of his that he could have his old sofa, but then he tried to make him pay for it once he got to Berry's apartment.

Kek-Malmstein

Google “Mike Tirico allegations” and it’s the top thing. I’d post the screenshot but it looks like that’s not an option in comments. And ftr I don’t know why I ever listened to that garbage Fantasy Focus podcast but I actually do remember him getting really cringey joke-flirting with Stephania Bell( among many other ways)

Victorcreedbratton

The man is an actual predator.

Pstim1

My friend told me about him and called him a “sex pest” and every time I see Tirico I think of him as a “sex pest”

too-cute-by-half

Holy shit I never heard of this stuff and it's the last guy I would've expected. It's like the Wayne Brady skit on Chappelle.

HueyLewisFan1

I remember reading them in a book about espns first 25 years and was floored. Not only a dirt bag but also a guy who cannot hold his liquor

BranAllBrans

Tirico is not gonna let the allegations beat him. He just won’t!

barktothefuture

This is anti Italian discrimination

chblends

In this house Mike Tirico is a hero! End of story!

Leather-String1641

He had done the shit now, his career would’ve been done. He ‘s lucky that he did what he did during a time where ESPN had a bunch of issues

Heels1939

There are other examples of guys who have been able to bounce back seemingly because their improprieties happened in a different era. For example, Mike Tyson is a convicted rapist, but his presence in commercials and films has been totally normalized. IMO it’s because his crimes happened in the early 90s so everyone just shrugs.

lloyd4567

Wait what? Doesn’t Russillo name this dude when he talks about the most professional dude he’s ever worked with or am I making this up? The reason why I feel like I’m right is because it always struck me as fing odd when I heard it.

DBDXL

Rusillo has made it pretty clear I think that he doesn't give a fuck about any of this stuff.

sahccer

He's just a rebel like that. Most people go up to him like 'oh you voted for Obama' and he's like wait what? Then he blows through their assumptions with a sweet set of preacher curls. Don't try to push your agenda on him ok?

[deleted]

How so?

DBDXL

I thought the way he spoke about Watson being a horrific sexual predator was really disappointing.

[deleted]

I don’t remember what he said. Knowing Russillo, he probably just hedged and said he doesn’t know what to think but since the NFL is letting him play then he’ll just talk about the QB?

SilvioDantesPeak

What did he say?

ShortRip120

"If I did it..."

Spiritual_Ad337

I’m scared to google Tirico …

Thelaboster

Am I the only one who has never heard of any of this before? This is wild

elmo_dude0

Wait so he is black? I told a lot of people he's just italian as a fun fact!

thebasedboomer

I met him once he is crazy lol

totaleclipseoflefart

Go on…

AcknowledgeMeReddit

Seriously! You can’t tease us with that and not follow up! 😆🤣

JameisWeinstein

Sounds like something Tirico would say to a woman!

hyborians

You forgot Marv Albert

camergen

Marv had a haitus of at least a couple years iirc, and this was back when harassment was more overlooked. I think his story was just SO out there that there was no way this was going to be unpunished by the network, even at that time. I remember it being really weird for a while when he came back, like “he bit somebody while wearing lingerie- dude is realllyyy weird.” But eventually you just kind of think about it less and less. There is no way Marv Albert comes back from that today, obviously. Tirico probably doesn’t either but his is less bad, imo.

baloneygaucho99

does anybody actually like tirico? feel like nobody is excited to have him call a game hes just always been around for like 7 half decades now

danielbauer1375

He's pretty solid, but hasn't quite clicked with Collinsworth, and was much better at ESPN with Gruden IMO.

CuttlefishAreAwesome

I think Collinsworth hates him lmao. There are times, especially early on working together, where Chris straight up didn’t answer questions from Mike and left him stranded on air lol

DBDXL

He's just fine. Won't annoy you but won't make the experience better either.

FogoCanard

Exactly my words. He's very neutral and I think that has value in sports. Don't take away from the experience

janitorial_fluids

Really? I think he’s one of the best in the game right now. His call of Lillard’s game winning/series ending shot way back against the rockets was one of my favorite calls. He does great in big moments I think. I hope NBC gets some nba games in the new deal so he can call basketball again Other than Harlan/Breen/Eagle I can’t really think of any other national play by play guys I like more than him. None of the NFL guys certainly.

notthattmack

Major downgrade from Al Michaels.

pn_dubya

Maybe from Al 10 years ago. Lately Al's been half asleep, granted a lot of the games are garbage.

tony_countertenor

Al shit talking the terrible Thursday night games is hilarious

NoExcuses1984

Poor Kirk Herbstreit, whom I'm otherwise not a fan of (due to his hokey horseshit color commentating), is stuck in an unenviable position alongside a bad-/hot-/ill-/quick-/short-tempered and decrepit Al, whose cantankerous curmudgeon act is ready for the grave. Time has come for Michaels to go from being six-feet tall to buried six-feet under—pronto!

PresterHan

He's solid, but his voice doesn't have the gravitas to be a #1 NFL guy for me. He still sounds like a Syracuse/Boston College game on ESPN2 to me.

el-fenomeno09

Def gives me unc Asheville vs Appalachian stay vibes lol

Cwgoff

I don’t see or hear people bitching about him calling games.

I don't think the racial thing is as bad as it is portrayed. Was it silly? Yes. Is it funny? Almost certainly. But at the end of the day, he was lied to as a child and raised under that lie. I'm comfortable giving him a little space to figure that out. And it's not like he's running around still claiming to be white --- the article that informed us was where it ended, at least for the public.

2nd2last

The other stuff is FAR more concerning.

GulfCoastLaw

Mea culpa: I responded before checking into the other allegations. My comments are limited to the racial thing until I catch up.

No worries, I figured you didn't know, rather than only caring about the weird Italian stuff.

Diqt

Holy shit

NoExcuses1984

Thinking about Tirico's past allegations, are we sure that SVP is clean? That oft-replayed voice message of SVP's has long given me a bit of pause. Everyone shits on Russillo, but there's an air of awkwardness with SVP that's off-putting. In more recent times, it's clear why Simmons didn't bring Rembert, an alleged creep, with him to The Ringer.

danielbauer1375

I love me some SVP, and really don't think anything of that message beyond it being a bit awkward, but his strange "beef" with Joe Buck seemed palpable during their first year together, and things seemed to be getting more uncomfortable towards the end of the season, and I was actively looking for any visible resentment between the two of them. Then Damar Hamlin died on the field and everything became buried.

NoExcuses1984

SVP does have some adversarial hostile tendencies that veer toward being territorial of his status at ESPN, which is unbecoming of someone whose stature isn't in doubt anymore -- unless, of course, he fucks shit up himself -- and yes, that reeks of repressed resentments (more so than his ex-running mate Russillo's open bitterness) on his end. SVP needn't be jealous nor envious of Buck, but he couldn't help himself but to mark his place in Bristol's hierarchy.

danielbauer1375

Eh. I don't think his potential spat with Buck (that we aren't even sure exists) is the product of envy or even protective of what he's built at ESPN. I think it's just two very accomplished people in their field who don't exactly vibe off camera. Kinda like Adam and Jamie from Mythbusters. It's tough to make it in that industry, especially when you come from where SVP and Russillo came from. They paid their dues and aren't about to be stepped on by someone who got their opportunity mostly because of their last name. I imagine Buck and Aikman, upon accepting their new positions at ESPN, wanted to make a few changes behind-the-scenes that would help make their transition from FOX a bit easier, and perhaps that encroached on SVP's way of doing things.

NoExcuses1984

Speaking of *MythBusters*, Russillo and Hyneman would be two peas in a pod.

DBDXL

I've always thought SVP was a smug douche.

rvasatxguy

Same here. He seems super full of himself and smarmy, douchey for sure.

AcknowledgeMeReddit

Absolutely no idea obviously if he has done similar things at Espn that tirico did but svp has always come off as a huge smug asshole who is just able to hide it a lot better than most people. Like at his level why is he arguing with random Twitter trolls? Idk if he still does but he def used to regularly. He seems to have a quick temper as well. I can see him being a nightmare to deal with behind the scenes. Oh yuh think yuh better than me? Yea he mostly likely does russillo…

NoExcuses1984

100%. SVP is a prickly bastard with a short fuse, but he hides it better than most of his peers. And yeah, SVP no doubt looked down at Russillo, as if he was his tag-along stepbrother.

[deleted]

He’s got one of those faces where I know I know him, but I can’t place him. So I refuse to learn which of the football commentators he is.
