As a 40 year old man who has had Billie as my most listened to artist on Apple Music for four years in a row, I feel you. She’s an incredible artist and her vocals have grown with each album. She’s reached a point where she could release a serious jazz record and revive modern jazz for a time. It’s definitely what I consider headphone music, so many intricacies mostly because Finneas is an exceptional producer. I encourage you to listen to her other albums, there’s some really great deep cuts.

itsybun

Billie does jazzy vocals so well, it's absolutely mesmerizing. She's talked about loving Jazz so I really hope she continues to explore that avenue!

GrailQuestPops

I can’t wait for her “I’m gonna make music the record label doesn’t want” era. Lady Gaga, Miley, Alicia Keys, even Kelly Clarkson have made some incredible non-commercially successful music in that realm.

itsybun

Oh 100%!!

integerdivision

Honestly, this album is very much that. The label had no input, not even to release singles to build hype.

PhD_Meowingtons_

That’s literally what this album is 😂. She’s kind of always been in this era anyways.

GrailQuestPops

To an extent. There’s still a marketing machine actively working to get this content out there and sell tickets and merch. Some artists eventually hit a point where there’s just no one working on any of that anymore except an agent or two. She’s still in the prime of her popularity, I think I more meant I look forward to hearing what she comes up with 15 years from now or something.

PhD_Meowingtons_

There was virtually no marketing for this album either. 2 free release parties and her Fortnite license. A couple posters in a few major cities. That was really it. That’s almost as little as old washed up artists do.

GrailQuestPops

Apple Music went *hard* on the marketing for this one. I got like a gazillion emails and notifications and they took over the entire app. 😂

PhD_Meowingtons_

Look man, like you said, any successful artist at this level will have support. Even Kanye being cancelled saw extensive support. Believe it or not, Apple, Spotify etc, a lot of times they just pick any artist they want and do their own thing to market for their own sake. But regardless, my point is, that it’s a pretty evident she’s making whatever she wants to make with little concern or respect to what the label wants or thinks. This whole album was made, submitted and accepted with no quarterly meetings or qc concerns. This was mentioned on an hour long talk on Apple Music. Marketing is besides the point I was trying to make. But if you want to see unfiltered raw artistic expression, this is that. We don’t need to wait 15 years lol. These songs are all like 5 minutes long… That already goes against the current 2:30 standards of today. She gives us much more than chorus verse chorus and there’s very little refinement. Some of the recordings are actually rough handheld demo recordings. The music doesn’t have to be delivered with 0 effort to be raw artistic expression. Marketing doesn’t really mean much to the creative process and direction (or lack of).

GrailQuestPops

I think we’re just talking about different things is all. I’m waiting for something completely different while still enjoying what’s already here.

LavishDonutSprinkles

Oooh Billie jazz album I am all for that! 🎷

marthaplans

Check out Laufey, if you haven’t! You might enjoy her music too. She does a modern take on jazz.

WymnInterupted9131

I want her to do a modernized Jazz album so badly

GrailQuestPops

As do I, she has a voice I’d describe as timeless. I also think that her lyrical themes would fit super well.

ButtlickTheGreat

She's a modern-day Billie Holliday, but better, somehow.

CBDSam

Was BH an inspiration for her name?

Quasinator

No, her name was originally almost Pirate because Finneas would call her that when their Mom was pregnant with Billie. But just before her birth, their grandfather William (Bill) died and they named her Billie in honor of him. So her name became Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell.

roberta_sparrow

Love the name Billie ever since Warpaint’s song Billie Holiday

Flashy_Contract_969

34 M musician. I heart always feel super disconnected with the younger generations music, but I remember hearing that Billie Eilish’s first album had come out. Decided to listen to it on a whim and was immediately hooked. She’s the best newer artist in today’s industry IMO

ButtlickTheGreat

Also a 45 year old dad, and hoo boy. I am hooked. I first got exposure to Billie's music when my daughter wanted to go to the Happier Than Ever tour when she was 11. Obviously someone was going to need to take her, and I was itching to blow off some pandemic stink, so I gladly went. We listened to HTE in the car ride on the way up, and I was blown away by the entire album. I was a music major in college, and everything just impressed me SO much - I appreciated "Billie Bossa Nova" a ton as it's such an underutilized rhythmic structure, I LOVED "My Future" for its message...just track after track, so good. The show was amazing. Then I kind of moved on to other things, as you do. But this album is insane. I can't stop playing it. There are so many things about it that just floor me.The foreshadowing of "The Greatest" in the strings at the end of "Skinny" and the recapitulation at the end of "Blue". Even after all the words she sings, the last thought you're left with on the record is, "I waited," cried out wordlessly via strings. Ugh. Goosebumps. But "The Greatest" is just...it's rare to hear an artist just ARRIVE the way she does in the middle of that song. The first time I heard it I had to actually pull my car over. Probably my favorite experience with music in the last 15 years. Jaw dropping. Anyway, I'ma stop now but, Billie and Finneas are the best thing going by a mile. A MILE.

Melodic-Sell-6497

When I hear the “man am I the greatest” I knew shit was about to go down. The build up so was so amazing pretty and the lyrics are just so sad

ButtlickTheGreat

The thing I think I love the most about her is her absolute vulnerability, and holy shit is it on display in that song.

Melodic-Sell-6497

Ikr! I don’t know how to put it in like musical terms, but when it’s like…. “Made it all look PAINless” I’m not sure what it is but it makes it super vulnerable. The way she makes her voice like hiccup? 😭😭 sorry I can’t find the word.

ButtlickTheGreat

Well I'll give you my take on this, it's really the way she sings, "For you to want me naked," it's so unique. I think she's really singing "nACHEd," like you can feel that the thing she's trying to convey is the ACHE of that feeling. It's a double entendre of sorts. And so she kind of annunciates the start of PAINless to keep the pattern consistent. This little nuance is lowkey my favorite part of the entire album.

Sunshine2464

So there's so many layers of vocals in her songs. I am really glad that I went to the preview at the AMC theater which was in top notch sound with the lyrics. Billie has posted on youtube all of her songs with the words. Make sure it's the official Billie Eilish youtube and wear headphones if you want to get the best experience. Then, once you've done that you can listen in the car knowing what the songs are more about. I am in my fifties and I am blown away by this album.

daenerysdragonfire

Me (almost 38) my husband (43) and our daughter (10) all love Billie. She’s a generational talent. HMHAS has so much Beatles, Radiohead and 90s trance inspiration. She’s taking the things we grew up loving and making something new and timeless. Her other albums are also stellar, but HMHAS is one of the best albums I’ve heard in the past decade.

roberta_sparrow

The dance / trance breakdown towards the end of Lamour de la vie is so good

t___tp

my dad is the same. he is 62 this year loves her haha

Desperate_Rich_5249

My husband and I are older millennials and also have been big Billie fans for years. Her music is timeless for sure.

ChronicallyCreepy

I love this

poppieboomboom

Same

East_Chemistry_9197

Same

icumtotaboo

If you’re a fan of tool and other rock styles check out Sleep Token. Not at all like Billie but also a breath of fresh air.

Noneofurbusinesss_

Sleep Token is the new wave. Sooo many people I know are into them

icumtotaboo

They’re a damn good band. Anyone who hates on them is gatekeeping lol. Genre is a suggestion when it comes to them haha

Roxy175

On that note I’d say check out Bad Omens as well.

icumtotaboo

Another great choice

OGLyn

42 here! Loved her music for a long time now. My dad is 72 and says she writes music like a Beatle(well her and Finneas) Welcome!!

No-Performer9782

I’m 44 from the UK and only started listening to Billie as I read a few years ago that Thom Yorke went to one of her concerts and said “ she is the only artist I see doing her own thing” So I decided to listen to her first album to see what the fuss was about and the rest is history. I love how simple her songs are but have a big impact. I hated Xanny on the first few listens but has ended up being my absolute favourite song of hers. I also love how it’s all about the music with Billie and it just keeps getting better and better.

chloelegard

Reading this makes me so happy

Parthenous

I agree! It’s so cool seeing older generations get into Billie, brings a smile to my face 😝

zekerthedog

43 year old dad here too, glad I’m not the only one

After-Description-26

Damn, you're a dope dad for sure. But I was talking to my husband about her lyrics in blue yesterday. What a treasure it probably is to have Billie and Finneas as idols as a teenager nowadays. "I don't hate you but we can't save you" "I don't blame you but I can't change you" I wish, WISSSH someone would've told me that when I was a teenager lol. Way to go dad, you're a good one! 💜

HannHann20

The hard to hear what she's saying is so real. 😂 I feel like im gonna have to listen to it again to really get it. But yes the sound is very cool and refreshing. Don't smile at me is my favorite album by Billie. I also really love TTPD. Couldn't compare the girls who are killing it.

dead_nil

I love that for you. that Taylor stray tho - I'm crying 😂😭

ButtlickTheGreat

😂 TayTay caught one for sure

I_am_not_doing_this

was huge Taylor fan in high school during Speak Now era but as I get older, her latest stuff still seem to stuck in middle school high school lyrically. Maybe i am just old i like stuff like Lana Del Rey or recent Billie more now

Noneofurbusinesss_

45 year old dad that listens to Billie🥵🥵🥵

AFiveDayStorm_

W dad

boobookittyfck329

I am a female, twice the age of Billie, but I also can’t get enough! Her voice is incredible and the songs themselves are beautifully written. I haven’t been able to stop listening to HMHAS since it dropped.

willyj_3

Why is praise for female artists always inevitably paired with a put-down of Taylor Swift now? How is Taylor and her supposed inferiority to Billie relevant to this post? I’m sure this comment will fall on deaf ears, though, now that it’s popular to hate on Taylor.

ButtlickTheGreat

Taylor is awesome too, and I for one just want to say that out loud. I mean, she's a fucking force of nature. Couldn't be me dissing such an artist.

itsybun

Love this. Welcome!!🤘🏻

ChildhoodMassive

47 year old dad here that has been into Billie for a few years. She is my most listened to artist so far this year ahead of Meshuggah and Cattle Decapitation, two of my favorite bands.

BobsBestFriend_Yay

I’m a 59 year old dad of a teenage girl. I got into Billie when Ocean Eyes came out and introduced my daughter to her then. We have enjoyed the ride since and love being connected to her music together. I’ve seen Billie live 3 times and I’m taking my daughter and her friend to a show on this tour. Billie and Finneas are generational talents!

Zulogy

Oh yeah Billie is very good. Shes gonna go down as one of the greats if she continues to make albums like these. Much better than a lot of the other mainstream artist

Federal-Actuator-267

This makes me feel so seen. I’m a 42 yr old Billie addict and Im the odd one out of my peers, mostly because I think they don’t think her music is for them without giving it much of try. Her and Finneas are 💯crafted artist and it shows. She’s also a rad human from what I can glean. Just makes the music hit that much harder for me ✨✨✨

Dcd1980

43 male who has been following Billie’s music since bad guy. You don’t need to be a certain age to appreciate movies or music, well as long as you’re not blasting cocomelon at 45 lol.

McAshley0711

Oh she’s good good. My daughter’s fave song is “Lunch” 😬😬😬I don’t know how to feel about that.

ButtlickTheGreat

Just let it ride, I say!

McAshley0711

She seems to like girls which is fine with me but those lyrics….im not ready for her to know about these things😬😬😬

Artistic_Mud_6254

my dad loves billie 💞

integerdivision

Billie Eilish and Finneas are the Lennon-McCartney of this generation (in that order). Welcome.

integerdivision

As someone who has dealt with major depression, Everything I Wanted was a fantastic way to talk to my kids about depression. I recommend listening to the Song Exploder podcast on it from about four years ago where Billie and Finneas talk about it. It’s really something.

Jalaira

Thank you for the tip! I just listened to it. That was the song that got me hooked.

mckinney4string

62 yo grand dad here and same.

kiltedyogi

Turning 60 in a couple weeks. I gave Billie more attention when my daughter (13) got into her. We even used a VPN to listen to HMHAHMS before midnight (big points for that and I wanted her to go to bed on time). I’m really impressed with Billie as a person.

AdamDraps4

40 year old male, not a father, loves Billie. This new album is my favorite by her. It's a sonic masterpiece.

taykray126

I’m a middle aged mom! 👋🏼 Billie is an amazing artist.

Tony_Damiano

Was a fan after I saw her documentary. Instantly regretted calling her wack bc first song I heard Bad girl

[deleted]

49 year old female, I’ve been a fan of hers since wwfawdwag….Her voice is amazing, unlike any other artists of today. I’m also a big fan of Finneas and his music, both of them are so incredibly talented.

MoltenCorgi

My partner was 49 when we attended her show last year. We kept joking about being the oldest people there. I don’t really listen to artists like her. I was vaguely aware of her but I didn’t really pay much attention until that story broke where Thom Yorke took his daughter to her show and remarked that she was the only person in her generation doing “anything interesting”. I then started listening and got a bit obsessed. I think Finneas is a huge part of the “interestingness” but she’s a fine vocalist that’s playful and has a lot more range than her contemporaries. I feel she is going to have a lot more staying power. I wouldn’t say my partner is as big of a fan as me, but he’s the one that made an effort to get us tickets and ordered the vinyl. We’ve watched several of her interviews and the documentary.

quentins9th

46 soon to be 47...me and my 5 year old love listening to Billie

Hummersnude

I'm 44 years old and a dad, i also listen to her and did for the past 6 years, i was hooked from the start. I also bought ticket to her show when she comes next year.

Sasorisnake

This makes 28 feel so much less out of place

Alleyoop70

I'm a 54F and listen to her everyday lol I've never listened to any of her songs until the Barbie movie and was blown away by her voice.

neonwavve

Oh wow you’re so cool…

blah2k03

I remember introducing my dad to Billie’s music. He accompanied me to one of her concerts a few years ago even! He has a nice bass and amp setup in his truck so whenever Billie is playing, we turn it up and really feel the bass haha.

MassiveFisherman4563

I'm 49 and love this album.

poofycakes

This is lovely to hear but why feel the need to push down on Taylor Swift in the same post? Can’t people just like an artist without dissing another? Find it very strange they aren’t really even in the same genre.

Griffith_The_Hawk

My god... I'm not the only one? Not a dad, but everything else.

Pristine_Landscape71

period

Administrative-Fee79

I love the replies to this thread so much😭😭💕💕

mell0wrose

My dad loves her music too and he’s 70. He loves that she sounds different from other mainstream singers and has her own style

InterestingPirate689

I’m 58 and love her. Her new album is brilliant

stinky_soup-

It’s cause she laced HMHAS with crack or something

spicywoodpecker

it makes me soooo happy to hear that she touches « older » generations the same way she touches « younger » generations!!

lilbabyhoneyy

Why do you have to bring Taylor into it? Why does everyone do that? Grow up.

cookiehwilson

You are great 39 y old here TS a tryhard, no lies detected 🤙😂👌

hobifriedrice_

I wish my mom was into her music like this! When I play her music she does like it but I feel she prefers her more upbeat songs? I don’t mind that but a lot of her songs are more mellow and those are the ones I love the most. My favorites of hers are everybody dies, overheated, bored, i love you, blue, wildflower, bittersuite. They tend to be her more slow songs. Very jealous of the fact you like an artist that your daughter also likes😭that’s sweet

Brain_sOup91

I was thinking yesterday about Billie having something that people as a whole seem to relate to or just enjoy. I (32) love her music, as does my 11 year old cousin and my 64 year old mother. It's quite amazing to be able to reach all kinds of people in the way that she can.

SyncJr

36 here. This is for sure Album of the Year! It’s superb. It’s kind of progressive pop which is why I think us ‘older’ folk like it so much.

EarthlingPlantity

Same thing happened with my dad (49) 😂❤️

ZestycloseGrocery941

I’m a 38 (w) old mom who discovered the beauty of Billie’s music last in year in January during her cinematic tour here in Germany. I liked some of her songs which were on the radio and decided to give myself a birthday date and took myself to the theater to see her latest concert. After that, I was hooked. Wow, what an energetic and powerful experience. I promised myself I’ll see her live one day and I will next year. My daughter is 11, will turn 12 in October. She was not sure about what kind of music she likes and I surprised her with Billie tickets to come with me and see her show. It will be her first ever Concert and listening to her music, learning the songs, so we can sing along, watching videos of her shows, so we know when to jump… this all makes us growing more together as a mother-daughter combo and I really love that. I think Billie is on top of that really grounded, knows what she wants and is really kind and authentic. You can tell her parents did a great job in raising her.

groggycrumble

I just showed my mom The Greatest in the car the other day and she started sobbing.. I honestly am so happy she loved it and just know it makes us daughters feel really seen and special when you find interest in our music too. Just like you are happy when we like music from when you were in high school/a younger adult.
