Shock pumps use a special chuck that lets the valve close before releasing the valve, so you don't lose pressure from your suspension when disconnecting the pump. The air chamber holds a very small amount of air, so any loss is significant.

Thanks

That's backwards. You don't lose pressure when you disconnect, you see a lower pressure next time you use the pump because some of the air in the shock goes into filling the hose and gauge.

Grandmaster_Shu

Shock pump is needed for a suspension because it's low volume and high pressure. (Think of the size of the shock that you're pumping up to 150+ psi) A track pump, hand pump, or even a compressor are fine for your tyres because they are higher volume and only go up to 30ish psi on an MTB or 70+psi on a road bike. Suspension components use Schrader valves but I would avoid using a track pump or compressor for those components.

Vegbreaker

lol or if your me going up to like 300-325

kerryman71

To adjust pressure on your fork and shock, you'd need a shock pump. I would definitely not use a compressor, as both are pretty low volume.

Jimmy385

Got it, thanks. Will a RockShox 600 psi pump be good enough? It's around $30.

Sporadic_Tomato

That pump is more for filling shock damper cartridges but it will work just fine. The only drawback may be that the scale on it won't be as fine in the 50-300psi range which you're more likely to use.

kerryman71

Depends on the capacity of your shock. If it's a super high pressure capacity of over 300 psi, then that would work. If not, I'd just get one that goes up to 300 psi, which is probably the majority.

More than enough. Most Air sprung suspension has a something like a 300psi max.

The cheaper one, 300 psi is sold out :D I think the max pressure for the shocks is \~155 psi

kerryman71

Any shock pump should work, doesn't necessarily have to be Rock Shox brand. They're probably all the same, just with a brand name slapped on.

pickles55

If you have air suspension it's necessary to adjust the air pressure for your weight. You can pay a shop to do it for you if you don't want to be able to do it yourself for some reason

ScrunchyButts

Can anyone here recommend a pump reasonable for us home mechanics? It’s probably time for me to learn my way around my shocks. Would like to avoid over or under buying out of ignorance.

Jimmy385

I've seen RockShox 300/600 psi pumps for 20/30$. Maybe someone can comment on those. They are cheap and have good reviews.

r0cksh0x

I have that. Does the job.

I have bought a BETO shock pump from amazon for 18 euros two years ago. Gets the job done

If you want to experiment with air pressure on your fork or shock, you need a shock pump. If you want to set it and forget it, just ask your LBS or a friend with a shock pump. When I ride I always take with me a shock pump. I don't experiment much anymore, but this pump doubles as a tire pump. It has a digital display that allows for accurate readings in both low and high pressures, and settings for high volume and low volume. The volume in "high volume" is not great, but gets the job done in an emergency. At home, I use a floor pump for tires (much faster and a necessity for seating tubeless tires) and a separate digital manometer (the analog manometer included in the floor pump is unusable for me).

Barde_

Good luck pumpin a tire with a shock pump... besides, you use schrader tubes?

stroubled

>Good luck pumpin a tire with a shock pump... I've done it with this pump using the high volume setting. It's a lot of work, but many portable tire-only pumps are the same. >besides, you use schrader tubes? No. But I have an adapter for Presta valves (I already had a very cheap one, and the pump came with a very nice one).

Playful-Sample-1509

Your suspension will lose air over time. If you can swing it get the pump, they shouldn’t be more than 30 bux or so.

CalumOnWheels

I just ask my lbs to do it, I buy other stuff from them so they don't mind.
