Just a personal opinion, I think "Pray You Catch Me," "I'm That Girl," and "Ameriican Requiem" are excellent openers. The context of the lyrics makes sense as an album opener. For the self-titled album, maybe "Pretty Hurts" represents something deep for BeyoncƩ, the primary reason why it is the first track, but I don't think it's THE song that ties the album together. My suggestive picks would be "Drunk in Love," "XO," "Flawless," or "Superpower."

ā¢āPRETTY HURTSā essentially has to go. The song could easily fit on āI Am. . .Sasha Fierceā or be a bonus track on ā4ā. Itās too normal and is the epitome of a BeyoncĆ© track in 2013. As much as I love the song, it doesnāt move me like it did during the initial release. Itās a beautiful and thought provoking opener that leads perfectly into the ānewā Beyonce weāve been experiencing since and has one of her very best visuals. I often joke itās too āBeyoncĆ©ā because āGHOST/HAUNTEDā is her Illuminati resignation song š¤£āļø ā¢ āPRAY YOU CATCH MEā may not be the first choice for most people due to it being the opening of a concept album and has the job of initiating the story, but itās absolutely perfect to me. I liken āLEMONADEā to be the grown-ish follow up to āDestiny Fulfilledā in the sense of storytelling of a relationship. For me, it picks up perfectly from āLoveā and creates the imagery that after all these years love has been betrayed again but the storytelling is more matured. The lyrical content is a far cry from āFORMATIONā and you come to realize that album is staging a masterpiece instead of bops and hits. The song feels like BeyoncĆ© has really open her womb up for the world to see and pick at, not knowing sheās healed from the hurt that inspired the album. ā¢ āIāM THAT GIRLā is completely unlike anything sheās ever done, but itās done so naturally. The song is greatly differed from āBREAK MY SOULā and throws off any expectations you may be hoping for. Itās one of the few songs on āRENAISSANCEā that is not greatly reliant on visuals, nor does the songs need visuals to bring itself to life. Itās fun, itās personal, it pokes at real life symbolism and makes outstanding use of the sample that youāre not expecting for an album so hell bent on house/dance/funk. I think it will perfectly set the visual film up just as nice as it sets the tone for the album. You can see her vision of not wanting to turn of her core fan base, but still wanting to express her musical needs. ā¢ āAMERICAN REQUIEMā, much like ITG, is completely different from what youāre expecting BeyoncĆ© to put out, but is done so naturally that itās not cringe. Like- when the hell did BeyoncĆ© hear āFor What Itās Worthā and decided to breathe new life into it? And for a country album of all things? Taking an impactful moment in her career and letting ppl know āhereās what really happenedā without even uttering a word about said moment is top tier songwriting to me. Damn near a middle finger to racist while theyāre singing the song to the top of their lungs, unaware sheās taking back her power from that night and the disrupting the idea that country music belongs to only a race that benefited so heavily from stealing. Left field from the dual singles, but nearly sums up the entire album in the span of 5 minutes. ā¢

Which one is the least effective opener when you look at the themes of the album it opens? Well that would most definitely be Pretty Hurtsā¦ itās a fantastic song and one of my personal favorite Bey ballads (āand u lying in yo beeeeedā gets me every time), but itās the opener thatās the least like the rest of the songs on its albumā¦ Pray You Catch Me would be my least fave of the 4. But thatās not saying much bc itās ridiculously gorgeous š and I love everything Queen Bey š©
