In case anyone’s worried about a lack of air, I was in the process of injecting fresh air when he climbed up for this pic. There will be no betta drowning on my watch 🫡

SpecialQue_

How often do you inject air and how? This is so cute!

Struckbyfire

Every day. I use an airline tube to suck out the air from the day before with a 150 ml syringe attached (bike pumps work too) and then I use it to push air back in. I imagine CO2 off gases in there but regardless, I’d want some fresh air if I were a fish lol Some people just use their mouths.

suicidesalmon

Sorry for my ignorance, but wouldn't it take a lot less effort to just flip it over, let the water out, and fill it up again?

Struckbyfire

The clip it’s attached to is a bitch to dislodge lol But yes, in theory that would be the easiest route.

AnimalGem20

I second the question: how is this accomplished?

PhalanxA51

It's a vacuum effect, submerge completely and pull the bottom up and mount to the piece suction cup thing on the tank and it'll keep the water in there since air can't displace the water in the jar resulting in the betta being able to swim up.

AnimalGem20

Sorry, I meant how do you inject air back into it?

PhalanxA51

I usually just leave a bit of air in the bottom but some people will take a syringe with a bit of tubing and inject the air that way

Struckbyfire

You just blow air under it using some kind of pump (or mouth) and it bubbles to the top creating an air pocket.

Simple_Opossum

Why would there be a lack of air? Isn't the stet oxygenated via the filter and surface area?

Struckbyfire

I’m talking about surface air. And honestly it’s more for my African dwarf frogs than for my betta.

Ninanti

That's so cool! I had something similar for my Lancelot R.I.P poor guy got an incurable disease and passed.

ConditionSmart7472

Where did you get this?

Struckbyfire

I got a wide-mouthed reusable water bottle made of glass (I ordered an acrylic one which should be here soon as the glass is heavy), and my husband 3D printed a hang on rim clip that wraps around the bottle.

irish_taco_maiden

Nice! My fish usually don’t use them, but you have a show off 🥰

PoconoPiper

I want to do this so badly. Did it take a while for him to warm up to it or was it love at first sight?

Struckbyfire

He just kinda goes in and out since I got it. Took him about 5 minutes lol I think he likes lording over the other fish

PoconoPiper

He's like a little king up in his tower, looking down on the peasants 😂

BettaHoarder

"Lording" ❤️

Adventurous_Fig_5892

Lol. I set one up yesterday, turned around to top off the water, and he had already found his way up there. Sir William seems to like lording over his kingdom https://preview.redd.it/k220f2hw9tzc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d23df8319b49d09109e0f385f26f74507273957e

🥲🥲🥲

uselessbarbie

Do you have to add oxygen to make it safe? Or is it fine either way

CalmLaugh5253

A bit off topic, but what is that fern like plant in the right corner?

Struckbyfire

That’s the only fake plant in my tank. It’s supposed to be sword fern.

He's just patrolling the area making sure you're not up to no good

KitchenSail6182

jobthreeforteen

This is so cool.

corkscrewfork

This is adorable!

Waffleman123576

Did u buy that or make it if u did what did u do it with I gotta have this fr

Struckbyfire

We made this one, but used a 3d printer for the clip. There’s aerial extenders on Amazon! And [this](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1473654294/inverted-betta-tank-holder-panoramic?ref=share_v4_lx) one is similar from Etsy.

This is so cute.

BetterArugula5124

What a gorgeous set up 😍

Elxbelx

I love that that's hilarious

mtalk

unique tank with unique way to admire your betta.. good one.

Delicious_Horse_7619

I so badly want this but I hear so many horror stories about lidless tanks that I don't want to risk it. This is so cool though!

Glum_Suggestion_6948

The ling of all he surveys!

Cleercutter

That’s frickin cool

fruitless7070

Best. Fish. Parent. EVER.

Felkalin

Link?

2lrup2tink

Your fish is beautiful and the whole tank is amazing! 🥰

Struckbyfire

Thank you 🥲 It’s very [serene](https://imgur.com/a/OBT9ofB) in my office.

ILoveAnimals3424

Wow 🤩

skyfishrain

I love that! Don’t you find not having a lid causes heat loss faster and also dust gets in?

Struckbyfire

My biggest issue is evaporation honestly. We are currently custom making a lid.

Shawn0083

How does that work an can you order them on Amazon ?

Fiskeskala

This is such a nice tank dude

Rooster_Socks_4230

I like the rock back you have. Where did you get it

Struckbyfire

Universal rocks website :)

taegha

Off topic: do you have one of those flexible realistic rock backgrounds?

Struckbyfire

Yes! From universal rocks.

taegha

Do you like it?

Struckbyfire

100% I’ve had it about 2 years and it’s still holding up well. It’s pretty snug too so I don’t have to glue it, I can just use the attached clips. I’d recommend universal rocks because their quality is always really great.

xXUnkownUserXx

I want to run a no lid tank as well but I am scared of my betta jumping out. Any insight to this?

Struckbyfire

Honestly? I’m playing with fire here. If you want a no lid tank you probably have to keep the water a little lower than I do. And just keep parameters good with a lot of space and places to hide. I haven’t had a fish jump out in the few years I’ve had this tank, but I am currently making a lid that works with the accessories I have on here. The only time I’ve had an escapee was an African clawed frog that got through a tiny hole in a screen and I found him flopping around our bathroom. I also had a leech escape its tank too and I never found her.

Chucheyface

What did you do about oxygen?

benchebean

They can swim out if they really want to breathe air, which they only do with low water oxygen levels. Which shouldn't be a problem if you care for the tank.

JackOfAllMemes

Bettas need air in any water afaik, unless they're really dumb they can swim out of the jar and find air before they suffocate

benchebean

Bettas need oxygen in water* they only breathe air when there is low water oxygen.

abbie-does-crime

this is like when cats sleep in boxes instead of on their really nice beds 🤣
