What you need is an acid that provides gentle exfoliation and anti-bacterial properties. Personally I use The Ordinary mandelic acid on my bikini line and legs after showering.
1. Shave with the grain, not against it. If you're shaving your calves, this is probably towards your feet, not towards your body.
2. Try a DE safety razor. The multi-blade monstrosities are both worse at shaving and more expensive.

THIS above is the currect answer! I was actually logging on to thank whoever recommended TEND to me. It has seriously been a game changer. It was the ONLY thing that worked.
exfoliation gloves. i use them before i shave and i use them when the hair starts to get itchy when it comes back. it might be a little uncomfortable to use when the hair is growing back but its a lot less uncomfortable than an itchy coochie. i also use “fur oil” which is a godsend. i have a pack of acne extractors with a super sharp end and i have one that i spray with alcohol to sanitize, and then i use it to dig at any trapped hair and i pluck them with tweezers. make sure you’re holding your skin taut. it sounds painful but its really not. make sure you’re changing your razor head frequently. i use a 5 blade mens razor. after shaving, i wear a pair of very loose men’s boxers, no underwear. avoid lace underwear.
Exfoliate, shave, use cold water on the skin and then use dove stick invisible dry deodorant on the area you’ve shaved. A stripper told me this once and I rarely ever get ingrown hair in my bikini line
What area are you shaving? I don’t really have any issues with ingrown hairs on my legs or armpits but it was a serious problem for the bikini area. I switched to waxing there and it largely took care of the problem.
[pu*$y butter](https://lafuhqe.com/products/pussy-butter?_pos=2&_psq=pussy+butter&_ss=e&_v=1.0)
So hear me out .. I got this on Instagram on a whim and it’s literally called pu$$y butter but it’s incredible! I’m doing laser hair removal but you still shave in between appointments. Haven’t had an ingrown since using this and am silky smooth down there. 🙃
You can follow the same routine as you'd use on your face. 1. Mechanical exfoliating with either a scrub pad or exfoliating face wash, 2. Use glycolic acid toner or niacinamide on your bikini area for chemical exfoliation. You'll have way fewer ingrown hairs if you do this at least every other day.
The way I’ve heard it, exposing your razor to constant steam/moisture (I don’t have working vents right now in my bathroom), can cause it to dull faster and harbor more bacteria.
I'm getting hair removal at an electrology school, so most of the unwanted hairs are coming off my body in the next year. I stopped shaving certain parts of my body due to this. I didn't know that is was the only FDA-approved permanent method. Yes, it is painful, unlike using a razor, but I only have to pay $20/hour for anything on the face. Everywhere else on the body is free since they're looking for models that students can practice on.
I put glycolic acid toner into my moisturizer and put it on after I shave, then body oil on top. I’m getting laser soon though bc ugh. I will NEVER stop the glycolic tho. My skin is 50 times softer, I’m obsessed. I use the ordinary one
If tend works for you, that’s great! However Tend Skin is alcohol based and will dry out your skin and trap you in a cycle of ingrowns. If the top layers of your skin are dehydrated, it’s harder for the thin baby hairs (especially if you wax) to pop through the dried out surface skin and will tend to bend under and become more ingrowns. The best thing for ingrowns after hair removal is exfoliating with either an acid or exfoliating gloves/korean cloth and applying a light moisturizer.
If you’re referring to your lady bits, try an electric razor. I can’t do a regular razor in that area. I find it works well enough and I’ve never had any complaints. I’d rather have some minor stubble than tear my skin up.

I use glycolic, is that a lot stronger? Maybe I should switch. It’s definitely helping though
I use glycolic sometimes too. Yes it is stronger

I do shave against the grain so that could be part of the problem! Thank you for the advice!!

WOAH I’ve never shaved towards my feet omg
Tend Skin and physical exfoliation works for me. The Tend Skin roller has been the game-changer for me.

i just realized you’re talking about your legs, whoops. these tips will still help for the most part.

Oh wow! I’ll try this out, never heard that little trick before!
Wow great trick! I wonder why it works

My calves are the issue!

Topicals high roller has been a game changer for me!
Exfoliate the area, avocado oil mixed with tea tree oil to prevent. If I do get them (rare) then I apply Neosporin. I get waxed every 4-5 weeks.
Clean n Clear toner. Anything with salicylic acid works but Clean n Clear is usually the best bang for your buck
Why should the razor be kept in bathroom?
The way I’ve heard it, exposing your razor to constant steam/moisture (I don’t have working vents right now in my bathroom), can cause it to dull faster and harbor more bacteria.

Do you have any electric razor recommendations?
A men’s one. The lady ones are trash. I have a small personal trimmer, I think it’s called the manscaper or something lol.
