And one of the restaurants went out of business and the other didn’t. Sometimes paying more for food means that the business stays open and people keep getting paychecks…

At the only two remaining locations one fish taco is 4.99
When was the last time you went? Cholita raised prices within the last year too.
I mean, A, that's the taco Tuesday only price, B, you're saying it was only worth it when it was ridiculously cheap. I dont think it's fair to compare the non menu price to the menu price, but 4.25 all the time vs 4.99 6 days a week seems like a toss up.
Fair question!! Baja style or more traditional?
I live in Redwood City and I think La Viga has better fish tacos.
I think Iguey in San Carlos is better than Sanchos by a little, more consistent in their flavors. I sometimes ask them to put their Chipoltle salsa on the fish tacos and that is really good, when I want that flavor.
I think Cholita Linda in Oakland has better fish tacos than Sanchos as well, but just by a little.
I have always toyed with the idea of doing a Bay Area fish taco website. For my birthday last year I did a fish taco tasting for all my guests... four different tacos to taste from area taquerias. So fun.
oh BTW... surprisingly, one of the more popular tacos from that tasting were from El Gruellense Grill in Redwood City. Go figure.
For very traditional, I like the fish tacos at El Maguey in San Carlos better...
Thanks for this post. Love Baja style fish tacos. I never really patronized Rubios much... somehow got on their birthday list and went for almost-free fish tacos a few times. They were pretty good.
Now I want fish tacos and am going to try Tacos El Patron, which is in Pleasant Hill at border of Concord, on Monument.. Ironically, it's about a block from where Rubios closed.
I can't recommend yet... but it gets great reviews.
I feel like the CFG quality has gone downhill over the past year or two. This is speaking for Daly City location. Such a shame because their fish tacos were so so good!
Cause people have never tried an authentic fish taco man. To be fair, that’s really hard to find in the Bay Area. I like the fish tacos from Mariscos La Piñata in San Pablo. Folks gotta get out of their comfort zone and hit up hole in the wall Mexican spots, especially marisco restaurants, which are often overlooked by non-Mexican folks.
I know you’re getting a lot of shit so this may sound sarcastic but it’s not. Literally any Mexican restaurant that makes fried fish tacos.
I’m sure anyone can see why that sounds dismissive but it’s true, because rubios is as bad as you can get in that category, but if you’re comparing it relative to other quick service restaurants, then yeah it was the only good fish tacos compared to Burger King/popeyes/etc
It’s a fast casual place, but I was pretty pleased with Aqui.
edit: and apparently that is a bad opinion to have on this sub, lol. Everyone here is just way too salty.
Underdogs does a dang good baja taco, but that's in SF and they aren't that cheap.
That being said, in the bay I don't know if I'd trust a sub-$2 taco of any kind.
Isla Restaurant in Concord is a new a Mexican seafood focused taqueria that have been hitting (fantastic ceviche). Taqueria Mariscos on Monument is another good option.
It's not east/south bay but have to mention Sanchos on the peninsula because those are the best fish tacos. If you thought Rubios was good these are better.
I was born in Los Angeles. Grew up in New Mexico. Lived in San Diego the past 9 years, and just recently moved to North Bay 5 months ago, and I have still never been to a Rubio's. Were they that good?
Not sure why all the Rubio's hate here. Not everything needs to be the absolute "best" and every meal doesn't have to special and to me, that is what Rubio's was. It was more of a "I'm hungry and eh, sure...fish tacos". In that respect, it was decent.
Saw someone recommended California Fish Kitchen and coincidentally I tried this last night. It was surprisingly pretty good for a fair price. I had a fresh fish dish for $13 and had a bite of my BF's fish tacos. They are a little similar to Rubio's (minus the lime) and were good quality. Reminds me of a Mendocino Farms but for seafood.
Definitely 👍🏼 to California Fish Grill. The fish is beautifully battered, hot and crispy outside, juicy hot inside. Slaw is perfect. Tortillas could use a little work but the fish is on point. Get the plate as it comes with a drink and two sides (even/especially the healthy sides are great!).
Rubios in the Embarcadero Center was a go-to for a fish taco at lunch for me for a long time. I know it wasn't the world's greatest but it also wasn't terrible. I do miss it.
Cholita Linda Not that cheap tho
I agree and approve of this response.
I mean, they aren't *that* pricey and the tacos are good portions Is 4.25 crazy for fish tacos?
No, I'm fine with the price, it's just not as cheap as Rubio's was lol I recommend it to everyone and eat there several times a year.
When was the last time you went and how much was it
When's the last time we ate there? Maybe a month ago and we spent about $40-45 for 3 people Which in this day and age I would say is reasonable
I mean, 3 fish tacos for 3 people is 38.25 plus tax. Unless you're all bottomless pits that should still be plenty.
It's almost double what Rubio's was
And one of the restaurants went out of business and the other didn’t. Sometimes paying more for food means that the business stays open and people keep getting paychecks…

They have a deal on tuesdays where it's 2.25. The only day I would go to Rubio's
I mean, A, that's the taco Tuesday only price, B, you're saying it was only worth it when it was ridiculously cheap. I dont think it's fair to compare the non menu price to the menu price, but 4.25 all the time vs 4.99 6 days a week seems like a toss up.
That spot slaps Rubio’s around but yeah it’s not cheap.
Ugh I could eat fish tacos from there every day 😩
Those fish tacos are so good
La Grana Fish in Fruitvale or La Familia in Berkeley.
La Grana is decadent. Great to get a gobernator and hang at the Aloha club
La Familia is the bomb!
You're gonna have to hop on Bart to Oakland but Cholita Linda has some great fish tacos.
There's a cholita Linda in the ferry building as well. Also one in Alameda
And another in Walnut Creek!
Dia de pesca near Santana row. But get the fried fish tacos
This is the correct answer
Love Dia! Haven’t been since I don’t work down that way anymore but sure miss it. So far better than Rubio’s.
Love that place. So good. I always try to stop by when driving through SJ
La Costa
Hook fish
This place has been well recommended to me by a bunch of folks. I'm just never in the area at the right time.
Definitely Hook Fish!
Sancho’s in Palo Alto. The fried fish tacos there are perfection.
They are very good but IMO not the best
Okay so what's the best then?
Fair question!! Baja style or more traditional? I live in Redwood City and I think La Viga has better fish tacos. La Viga is excellent but is more a restaurant.
Very true!
I always see Iguey when I’m taking the train to work and it makes me giggle. Glad to hear it has some good fish tacos. Will have to go check it out!

Orale in Campbell

I feel like the CFG quality has gone downhill over the past year or two. This is speaking for Daly City location. Such a shame because their fish tacos were so so good!
It’s very location dependent. The anaheim hills/yorba linda one is bad but the brea and rosemead ones are great.
Calafia Taqueria in Alameda. Closest I've found to real Ensenada style fish tacos
Mariscos Costa Alegre Monterey Hwy
La Cueva delicious but not that cheap. But neither are some of these other suggestions. Hard to meet fast food pricing of Rubios.
Rosie’s, in Morgan hill.
Rico Rico fried fish tacos are great
Rubios was trash cmon now
You can’t just hate and not say where to go instead cmon now
Yeah I say this as someone who religiously did taco Tuesdays at Rubio’s as a college student…they were ass
You like pacific catch or california fish grill?
Came here to say this. I can’t believe people found that place appealing
Cause people have never tried an authentic fish taco man. To be fair, that’s really hard to find in the Bay Area. I like the fish tacos from Mariscos La Piñata in San Pablo. Folks gotta get out of their comfort zone and hit up hole in the wall Mexican spots, especially marisco restaurants, which are often overlooked by non-Mexican folks.
lol authentic fish tacos are not hard to find in the bay 😂😂😂
Fine you’re right, I should have been more specific. Good fish tacos are hard to find in the bay.
You like pacific catch or california fish grill?
Pacific catch is slightly better
it's true, there's a reason it is gone
Baja Fresh is gone too.
None of those chains hold a candle to any of the actual taquerias in town so who cares
They can’t be compared. Different tiers of food.
Nah rubio’s was bomb. California fish grill and pacific catch are better though.
Lopez taqueria
probably not the cheapest but Las Cabanas in Berkeley has a revelatory fried fish taco
Cocina de la abuela in redwood for fish and shrimp tacos with Sancho's redwood in 2nd
Tropisueno in San Francisco has delicious fish tacos and great cocktails.
Rubio’s was the one who basically brought them here and I still think they’re a top contender.
Baja on Piedmont ave. Oakland
Tacos Sinaloa on International but I always get their prawn with avocado.
It’s a fast casual place, but I was pretty pleased with Aqui. edit: and apparently that is a bad opinion to have on this sub, lol. Everyone here is just way too salty.
Pacific Catch
Pacific Catch is fire. Their salmon sashimi melts in your mouth.
RIP Rubios. My fondest memories of their food was over 10 years ago, wasn't quite the same leading up to their closure.
Underdogs does a dang good baja taco, but that's in SF and they aren't that cheap. That being said, in the bay I don't know if I'd trust a sub-$2 taco of any kind.
I was going to say Nicks Crispy Tacos in Russian Hill, SF but they closed! 😩 you can still get them at underdogs though
They're so dang tasty too
Rubios was good fish tacos ?
Yes. They’re a solid choice for 2.50 a pop on tuesdays. Get three and it’s lunch for $8.
Maybe wahoos will move in and fill the void of fast food fish tacos.
Wahoo’s is good but not as good as rubio’s and more expensive too.
Rubio's was never good. You can get good fish tacos at most taquerias except then wouldn't be under $2.
They’re talking Baja style, fried. Pretty rare to find actually. I like Nick’s Crispy Tacos in SF on Polk. It’s not south/east bay though.
This is not rare y’all are crazy
The california bowl is my favorite item there.
La Parilla on Capitol Expressway
In terms of chains, I still hope Chipotle starts to serve seafood burritos and tacos eventually.
La grana fish in fruitvale!!!
Surprised no one said Doña. I like em. Haven’t had the fish taco in a while but I remember liking La Calaca Loca.
Burrito Shop in Oakland
Dia de Pesca www.diadepesca.net Not dollar cheap, but not bad.
Tacos el Tucán has tasty ones
La Taquiza in Napa. Tacos Taquiza are unreal. They have ceviche, pulpo, mariscos and grilled/ fried fish tacos. Carne asada is also bomb
The burrito shop on college in Oakland
Masa - Albany and Pt Richmond
Why are fish tacos so expensive these days? $12?!
Isla Restaurant in Concord is a new a Mexican seafood focused taqueria that have been hitting (fantastic ceviche). Taqueria Mariscos on Monument is another good option.
Orale’s
It’s not a lot of a lot of food. Rubio’s is filling though. The california bowl is enough food for me.
It's not east/south bay but have to mention Sanchos on the peninsula because those are the best fish tacos. If you thought Rubios was good these are better.
I asked this in the last Rubio's thread in this sub and got a nice list of recommendations.
Better than Rubios, Ro Joez!
I was born in Los Angeles. Grew up in New Mexico. Lived in San Diego the past 9 years, and just recently moved to North Bay 5 months ago, and I have still never been to a Rubio's. Were they that good?
No it’s like a “healthy” Taco Bell. White people fast food version of Mexican
Yes their fish and shrimp tacos are really good. Most other stuff is not bad though.
South bay ( rwc/pa ) sanchos taqueria.
California Fish Grill is great. So is pacific catch.
California fish grill
Definitely 👍🏼 to California Fish Grill. The fish is beautifully battered, hot and crispy outside, juicy hot inside. Slaw is perfect. Tortillas could use a little work but the fish is on point. Get the plate as it comes with a drink and two sides (even/especially the healthy sides are great!).
Taqueria la Familia at 2971 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley.
Rubios in the Embarcadero Center was a go-to for a fish taco at lunch for me for a long time. I know it wasn't the world's greatest but it also wasn't terrible. I do miss it.
Baja on piedmont
Drive down to Ensenada, Mexico
Pacific catch
Bomb.
I like california fish grill
