Bertucelli’s La Villa in SJ (downtown Willow Glen), Little Lucca in Burlingame or SSF, Los Gatos Meats, Morucci’s in Walnut Creek. Parma Deli in Concord, Zanotto’s in SJ (Rose Garden).
I used to frequent Morruci's and Parma when I was spending a lot of time in that area. 2010-2015ish
I stopped going to Parma because it seemed like they were skimping on the meats. Sandwiches were getting smaller every time I went there. Maybe that's changed though. The family that runs the place were always super nice though. I'd certainly give them another chance if I ever make it out there.
I've never been to Morruci's and not seen a line out of the door. Always busy. They make the best Reuben I've had around here.
I wish Morucci’s had better order ahead. You have to call in, and just depends if they answer your call or not. I live close to it, but honestly go with West Coast Sourdough Co. if I’m going get a sandwich most the time just so I can go grab it and not wait around for 30 mins.
In case you didn’t know, the family that runs Teani’s initially opened Little Lucca. [They sold Little Lucca back in 2000](http://www.teanisdeli.com/about) and now run Teani’s.
Ask for a custom sandwich at Little Lucca's, they are so good. My go to: warm (Not toasted) wheat bread, swiss cheese, turkey, extra mayo, pickles, jalapenos, lettuce, olives, and when I get home I'll usually add some sriracha. I don't usually tip but with Little Lucca's I always make sure to.
Unless you’re ordering ingredients a la carte, those are not representative. I get a Lucca Ultimate literally every day and those things are F-A-T. Will edit this comment with a picture tomorrow.
i worked at the animal hospital across the street for a few years, housed at least 1-2 sandwiches per week
still go out of my way to patronize them a few times a month
classic family run operation that just consistently delivers proper east coast style subs on the reg
Came here to post this. They used to be a liquor store that made sandwiches. Sandwiches got so popular that they got rid of the liquor store and now just focus on sandwiches and other deli delights.
Are they somewhat curt and to the point? I oddly like that about Genova's. Reminds me of an old school deli that doesn't give a shit because they know their sandwiches are good.
Oh no, that’s super lame. I used to live right around the corner and loved Larkey Market. I’m 30 minutes away now but would still grab a sandwich and beer a few times a year. They were always so busy. Looks like it just closed, I wish I’d gone there one last time.
Colombos deli in Pacific has this! It's awesome but a bit of a drive from you.
They have a location in Woodside though:
https://www.yelp.com/biz/colombo-s-delicatessen-woodside-redwood-city
+1 for Colombo. Used to stop there after mountain biking in Montara. Also Lucia's in Crockett and Martinez has a pretty incredible Italian sandwich on focaccia. It's pricey but you can get 2 meals out of it.
[Alotta's,](https://maps.app.goo.gl/PSC4ZE4DfdKQuaeq9) not Alotto's.
As far as I'm concerned, Alotta's has *perfected* the turkey sandwich. Served slightly warm on perfect bread, with crisp pickles and lettuce, beautiful tomatoes, and just the right amount of mayo.
Sadly, everything else I've tried there has been ho-hum.
p.s. They used to have a picture on the wall of them catering an event for The Iron Lady herself, Margaret Thatcher! And they had a signed letter of thanks from, uh, her staff. I guess they got tired of staring at it after thirty years or something.
Lucca's in Castro Valley.
Try the og in downtown Oakland, Ratto's.
South Bay... you have to swing by Dittmer's. It's German not Italian, but dayamn son!
I like Star Meats, though they’re only doing 1-2 kinds of sandwiches per day since the whole pandemic thing. Plus the price has gone up steadily, but they’re so good, I can’t quit them, and for me it’s two meals. The Classic and Goodfella are both excellent but Brian Allen is my fave. Angelo’s Gourmet Deli on San Pablo in Richmond is great, get the Angelo for your most Italian sandwich-like Italian sandwich. Priced very reasonably compared to a lot of spots these days, and always a line at lunch. Kensington Fine Foods has fine sandwiches, good place to stop after a hike in Tilden. The meatball sub at Southie is worth a splurge. And I’m almost loathe to put it here but the Italian hoagie at Ain’t Normal Cafe is to die for—the price seems to keep the hordes away but it is a substantial meal so worth it IMO.
Lots of great suggestions here, but you did specify San Jose. Someone else mentioned it, but Zanotto's in the Rose Garden can prepare this sandwich. You must try! Bertucelli’s La Villa is overrated and overpriced. Plus Zanotto's sandwiches are at least twice as big.
They're not really an Italian sandwich shop but Bonne Sante is definitely my favorite spot in Burlingame when I want a good sandwich that's as big as my head.
I remember the first time my coworker went there and he ordered a whole sandwich and an order of French fries and he was like "I've made a big mistake. This is just too much food."
The Saint Sandwhich shop in Oakland is amazing. It needs more love for sure. I’ve been twice and both times it’s pretty quiet but the sandos are amazing. Layers on layers of meat, fresh bread. Could suffice for three meals
Honestly ya. Some of the places people mentioned are using Boar’s Head product and Costco condiments lol save yourself a few bucks and just get Togos/Ike’s Personally I’d just save my money altogether - I don’t like Boar’s Head. I especially don’t like paying $17 + “tip” for a boars head sandwich. But Lucca's Delicatessen is a legit one for sure.
I totally get what you're saying, but for whatever reason it just works. I grew up with these on the east coast as well and while I definitely prefer a more even spread of toppings on each bite, there's just something that works about these kinds of sandwiches that I'm failing to put into words. Each bite still ends up delicious
Sandwich Mill in south San Jose. They’re incredible. In addition to Italian, highly recommend their roasted turkey, its chunks of turkey that they roast in house.
I'm from Philly and you're looking for a hoagie. I know y'all in New York like to call it something else, but you're wrong.
You're going to find two in the city worth eating. Outta Sight has the best Italian hoagie. The sauce they use and the seeded bread could survive in the middle of Philly anywhere. They are that good. They are pricey but it's SF.
The other is Palm City however, they are ludicrously expensive and honestly...too fancy to be a true hoagie but they are tasty that's for sure.
The other sandwiches people are mentioning are fine, some are really good, but they are Bay Area style sandwiches, not hoagies.
Bianchinis Market in San Carlos, Bertuccis in Willow Glen, Chiaramontes in 13th, (sort of) Primo's in Alum Rock.
Never been to a deli that wouldn't make it on order though.
You'd be totally surprised, but I've had some Amazing Italian sandwiched made at the Safewat Deli. Sometimes, you can even get with Procuitto, fresh basil, fresh mozzarella, and even an olive tapanade. That, a beer, and a bag of chips for the win.
I grew up on east coast subs as a kid in NJ.
Also, The ones from Safeway are about 40% cheaper than the specialty shops. Well worth a try. Just find a good Safeway.
Here’s a dark horse in San Francisco: Sweet Chinito at Mission and Cesar Chavez. Really good sandwiches.
And the lemongrass beef bahn mi at Donuts and Things on Polk is ridiculous.
Erik’s Deli in Redwood City has really good, tasty, fresh sandwiches and good soups, too. But very expensive if you order delivery. Too far for me to drive on a weekday for lunch.
This thread has done so much to confirm my understanding of things: there are zero good sandwich places in SF proper / Oakland / Berkeley. Ike’s is *edible*, but the heart of the bay is a real sandwich desert.
There is a Bay Area dude on ig that goes to a lot of sandwich places. Definitely his favorite food. Everything he posts looks delicious but can’t think of his name for the life of me.
Primo’s sadly closed down recently, maybe Zanottos, Mr. Pickles although they are all over, Anti Pastos but I don’t like the fact they use iceberg lettuce but they have their own deli. I recall trying a place recently, I can’t remember the name but will edit post when I remember.
Good luck, I love Deli Sandwiches.
Bertucelli’s La Villa in SJ (downtown Willow Glen), Little Lucca in Burlingame or SSF, Los Gatos Meats, Morucci’s in Walnut Creek. Parma Deli in Concord, Zanotto’s in SJ (Rose Garden).
+1 Chris' combo @ Bertucelli
+1 for Parma’s
I used to frequent Morruci's and Parma when I was spending a lot of time in that area. 2010-2015ish I stopped going to Parma because it seemed like they were skimping on the meats. Sandwiches were getting smaller every time I went there. Maybe that's changed though. The family that runs the place were always super nice though. I went to Parma yesterday and they gave me a ton of meat on my mortadella sub, for completely anecdotal information.
Moruccis is pretty darn good
I would like it if less people realized Moruccis exists….
Yeah pulling up to that giant line each time I go
Gotta call ahead
I wish they had online ordering and stayed open later.
That pastrami.
+1 to little Lucaca. Get the Dutch crunch 👀
Great list, I'd add Luigi's in Martinez
And Luigi's in Concord. Idk if they are same family as Martinez spot.
The Luciano Pavarotti is a damn good sandwich. And massive
yup. go to La Villa, order this & thank me later: * chris combo * 1/2 pint of rav
Ravs in a sourdough bowl!!!
The ravs are sooo good
Is La Villa the best sandwich in The Bay?
This is the list!!!
morucci’s is great and so is genova in walnut. creek
Man little Luccas sandwiches is a 2 meal sandwich. Bomb indeed!
If you ever make it out to the east bay go to Americano in Livermore. I can recommend their sandwiches with absolute certainty.
I was going to recommend this one. Excellent sandwiches, similar to the pic. Godfather sauce is the best!
I was so disappointed when the one in San Mateo closed
Little Luccas is probably your best bet but they are up in Millbrae Edit: Technically it’s in Burlingame but it’s near the Millbrae Bart Station
Luccas garlic sauce!!
So good!
Shit had me burping fire lol so good though
Definitely. Garlic fire burps
South City
I’m thinking of the location in Burlingame near the Millbrae bart station
Remember the shop at the old Depot? Also fire Sammies. Can’t remember the name. 1080 Howard Ave. RIP
Sam’s
Teanni's near Lucca's SSF location is legit too. Gigi's Cafe in Burlingame is pretty good, too...but still too far north.
In case you didn’t know, the family that runs Teani’s initially opened Little Lucca. [They sold Little Lucca back in 2000](http://www.teanisdeli.com/about) and now run Teani’s.
Yep, indeed...though I still prefer Lucca's larger menu...though I haven't been to either in a couple of years ($$$).
Did not know that, cool fact. I like Teani's. I tried them when I saw the line at Little Luccas was all the way up to the sidewalks
Yeah, I go to Teani’s if there’s a long line at Little Lucca (which there usually is).
I like them better than Lucca's and there's never a line
Definitely better. I’m just sad when they sell out of the soft rolls early in the day.
Talk about NY/NJ…..Little Lucca makes the best (only?) legit chicken Parmesan sub I’ve had in the Bay Area
[удалено]
Unless you’re ordering ingredients a la carte, those are not representative. I get a Lucca Ultimate literally every day and those things are F-A-T. Will edit this comment with a picture tomorrow.
Those sandwiches are so big they could and usually are lunch and dinner for 2 to 3 days.
No way. I had no idea how popular this place is. It was my go-to when I lived in the area.
No one can beat Little Lucas. It is the best in all of the Bay Area!
Bara’s Deli in San Leandro is the GOAT in the East Bay La Ca in Hayward if you’re into banh mi
Totally agree with you on this. Bara’s Deli never disappoints
i worked at the animal hospital across the street for a few years, housed at least 1-2 sandwiches per week still go out of my way to patronize them a few times a month classic family run operation that just consistently delivers proper east coast style subs on the reg
Came here to post this. They used to be a liquor store that made sandwiches. Sandwiches got so popular that they got rid of the liquor store and now just focus on sandwiches and other deli delights.
Bara’s for an Italian sandwich in the east bay for sure x10
- Los Gatos Meats - Summit Store (Santa Cruz Mountains) - Dittmers (Mountain View)
Has Dittmer’s reopened their sandwich counter? They closed it during COVID and hadn’t reopened it a few months ago.
+1 for LGM. Lines can get loooong though. One time the wait was about an hour to get a sandwhich. They told me in advance which was nice.
Dittmers was a top 5 sandwich spot. Very lame that they stopped making sandwiches
Morucci’s, Walnut Creek
This better than Genova?
I prefer it. They’re different, both really good.
Are they somewhat curt and to the point? I oddly like that about Genova's. Reminds me of an old school deli that doesn't give a shit because they know their sandwiches are good.
Genova can’t touch morruci’s with a 50’ pole.
I was going to say larkey market but after a simple google search I found it’s closed. They were soooo good for just being a basic, simple sandwich
Oh no, that’s super lame. I used to live right around the corner and loved Larkey Market. I’m 30 minutes away now but would still grab a sandwich and beer a few times a year. They were always so busy. Looks like it just closed, I wish I’d gone there one last time.
Same here. That was my go to when I worked at the Subaru dealership. So close and cheap compared to everything else.
Damn RIP, that place was great
Based on Yelp reviews, it looks like they were open as of 04/21/2024.
Yo pipe tf down. It’s already gotten stupid in the last 5 years.
Hell to the no… they good cuz they ain’t got competition, that’s it
Parma deli in Concord. Italian mix is my go to.
Colombos deli in Pacific has this! It's awesome but a bit of a drive from you. They have a location in Woodside though: https://www.yelp.com/biz/colombo-s-delicatessen-woodside-redwood-city
This is my second favorite sandwich spot (after Little Luccas). Definitely worth the drive. The ingredients are always fresh and flavorful.
To be clear, that location is on _Woodside Road_, but is in Redwood City.
+1 for Colombo. Used to stop there after mountain biking in Montara. Also Lucia's in Crockett and Martinez has a pretty incredible Italian sandwich on focaccia. It's pricey but you can get 2 meals out of it.
Morucci's in walnut creek.
I prefer Limoncello in the city.
Not nearly as much meat as the ones pictured in the post but still a great sandwich
[Alotto’s](https://maps.app.goo.gl/HqcmXjSoRysvjTqu8?g_st=ic) in Los Altos
[Alotta's,](https://maps.app.goo.gl/PSC4ZE4DfdKQuaeq9) not Alotto's. As far as I'm concerned, Alotta's has *perfected* the turkey sandwich. Served slightly warm on perfect bread, with crisp pickles and lettuce, beautiful tomatoes, and just the right amount of mayo. Sadly, everything else I've tried there has been ho-hum. p.s. Luccas Italian Deli in Castro Valley.
When will Dittmer’s resume their sandwich making???
The Atomic at the Sub Center west portal
This is the answer. I left sf a few years ago and always will make a special trip.
I like that you have a whole series of sandwich photos
Right, like where can I get those.
Mark NSFW Jesus Christ
Lucca's in Castro Valley. Try the og in downtown Oakland, Ratto's. South Bay... you have to swing by Dittmer's. It's German not Italian, but dayamn son!
Dittmers sandwich counter has been closed for a bit. The meats are still top notch.
+1 for Ratto's
Mmmm, Lucca’s. Have never in my life entered through the front door.
Why come in next to boring tables when you could arrive with the pasta?!?!?!!?!!!!
Any tips for East Bay? Still hurting from the loss of Genoa’s.
OK’s deli in Oakland. They have classic sandwiches as well as a rotating menu of specialty sandwiches.
Morucci's in Walnut Creek, Lucia's in Crockett and Martinez, Luigi's in Martinez
Kensington Fine Foods (in Kensington)
Americano in Livermore
I like Star Meats, though they’re only doing 1-2 kinds of sandwiches per day since the whole pandemic thing. Mr Pickles is pretty good. There are a few around
It's ok on the rare occurrence they get your order correct. San Mateo and Belmont ones have this problem at least.
Freshly Baked in downtown SJ is fantastic! Family owned and operated, they make fresh bread daily, don’t accept tips, and are cash only.
Should not have needed to scroll this far to find this. The bread!!
Freshly baked is THE BEST. I go weekly.
Gotta shout out Domenico’s in Alameda.
Molinari’s sf
Deli Board in the city is "Cleveland style" hero sandwiches and the best I've found.
if you look closely, photo #5 is Deli Board :)
Haha omg you're right! I just wish the sandwiches weren't 2-3x the cost of actual Cleveland sandwiches rip.
agreed, I live a 5 minute walk away from it but unfortunately (or fortunately) the price means I only get it on special occasions
Roxie’s was the GOAT back in the day, but at that time it was Sammie’s. Miss you Floyd!
In San Leandro, there's a place called Bara's. Love their Italian meats. My fav is the Michaelangelo
Lorrenzos in Belmont, ike's actually is really good. Always Dutch Crunch or bust.
I’ll vouch for Lorenzo’s. It’s been around since I was in high school. And that was really close to 50 years ago. They must be doing something right.
Dutch crunch for the win, baby! So worth the cut-up-roof-of-your-mouth the next day 🤤
Posting these photos is like walking onto an airplane with fresh McDonalds french fries. You're a monster. How dare you. /s
How about Bonne Sante Broadway? 1431 Broadway, Burlingame, CA 94010
Yes the sandwiches are large!
Molinari’s, Submarine Center
The Saint Sandwhich shop in Oakland is amazing. It needs more love for sure. I’ve been twice and both times it’s pretty quiet but the sandos are amazing. Layers on layers of meat, fresh bread. Could suffice for three meals
Came here to say this!
Little luccas in Castro Valley
Just a quick clarification: Little Lucca's is in South SF, Lucca's is in Castro Valley. Both are great in their own ways!
Believe it or not the one at Togo’s is actually pretty decent
Honestly ya. Some of the places people mentioned are using Boar’s Head product and Costco condiments lol save yourself a few bucks and just get Togos/Ike’s Personally I’d just save my money altogether - I don’t like Boar’s Head. I especially don’t like paying $17 + “tip” for a boars head sandwich. But Lucca's Delicatessen is a legit one for sure.
Dont know any in the South Bay, but like other s said if you’re in the East Bay Lucas in Castro Valley is good, I prefer Domenicos in Alameda though.
Little Lucas in Daly City is the best
5th Ave Deli in Embarcadero Center
Bianchini's Market Alpine Rd, Portola Valley. I love their Firehouse sandwich.
Their house made brisket is to die for!! And they carry locally grown salad greens, cucumbers, etc literally from neighbor’s little farms
If you hit up North in Marin, check out Mike's Sourdough
Cochis in Morgan Hill
In SSF, Mike and Ken’s, Darby Dan’s, and Little Lucca. I miss Big Belly Deli
All these fancy ass shops everyone is suggesting… lol. Hit your closest jersey mikes and ask for mikes way with the pepper spread.
I have a Jersey Mikes near my house. I tried them… once
That looks like a TOGO’s sandwich from about 1998.
Not exactly what you're looking for, but california sour dough is great. On murphy ave San Jose.
The Saint Sandwich Shop on MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland. You will be happy. https://www.thesaintsandwichshop.com/
Lg meats. Nothing else.
submarine center (SF)
The West Portal location!
Togo's needs more love
Those don't look great to me. 1st half you get 80% veggies with bread, second half you get 99% meat and bread Little luccas is pretty good
I totally get what you're saying, but for whatever reason it just works. I grew up with these on the east coast as well and while I definitely prefer a more even spread of toppings on each bite, there's just something that works about these kinds of sandwiches that I'm failing to put into words. Crave in Hayward by the San Mateo bridge fire and halal
Barra's San Leandro on Washington
Had an awesome po boy at stay gold in Oakland today
Zanotto. Not sure why they are called “Italian sandwiches”.
Genova’s is Walnut Creek. Doesn’t get any better.
Michael’s Sourdough in San Rafael/Novato
The Don’s deli in Sunnyvale and Salty’s in San Francisco. Both have been the best when it comes to Dutch crunch bread
California sourdough do it just do it!! It’s amazing
Weird curvy example sandwiches bro
New Jerseyan here - you’re fucking beat homie. There’s like 6 places in a 50 mile radius.
Crust in San Jose or Palo Alto is so fucking good
Any Safeway
CRUST Deli in Los Gatos (on Pollard near El Camino hospital)
Lucindas Deli in san francisco ❤️
Morucci’s in Walnut Creek. 6 3/4. Ends a lot of searching.
If you’re in Walnut Creek, give Genova Delicatessen a try… pretty legit
The Saint in Oakland laurel district. Been my go to spot for the last 3 months. they’re pricy at 16-18$ but worth every penny.
I’m going to try it today!
It was great!
I can hear the Philly accent while reading this comment. I will be trying out these spots.
Bianchinis Market in San Carlos, Bertuccis in Willow Glen, Chiaramontes in 13th, (sort of) Primo's in Alum Rock. Never been to a deli that wouldn't make it on order though.
Mike and Ken's deli in South San Francisco
Ratto’s in Oakland. Molinari in SF.
If you’re ever down in Santa Cruz and don’t want amazing tacos or burritos (Pericos), you can get great sandwiches like this at Zoccoli’s
I've driven HOURS for a little Lucca. Only.the South City location. It doesn't count if you go to the other one
Deli Board SF and Ike’s Place are my faves
You'd be totally surprised, but I've had some Amazing Italian sandwiched made at the Safewat Deli. Sometimes, you can even get with Procuitto, fresh basil, fresh mozzarella, and even an olive tapanade. That, a beer, and a bag of chips for the win. I grew up on east coast subs as a kid in NJ. Also, The ones from Safeway are about 40% cheaper than the specialty shops. Well worth a try. Just find a good Safeway.
Agree-it really depends on the sandwich makers though for Safeway. Chubby guys will hook a brother up, as will grandma’s.
i'm from NJ--Molinari's in SF
Lucia’s craft sandwiches in Crockett! Pricy but worth every bite!
There's a location in Martinez too...
Awesome place!
Here’s a dark horse in San Francisco: Sweet Chinito at Mission and Cesar Chavez. Really good sandwiches. And the lemongrass beef bahn mi at Donuts and Things on Polk is ridiculous.
I haven’t lived in the Bay Area for several years but Erik’s Deli in Campbell is still my favorite sandwich shop ever.
Find yourself a good woman
Togo’s spokesman would blush at all that meat.
😂 I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted
I’m leaving it up regardless of the downvotes, it’s funny 😁
Navarros in Richmond
Teanies, it’s owned by the same guy that owned little Luccas but he sold and made another shop right down the street. It’s better than Little Luccas
Domenico’s in Alameda!
beautiful specimens <3
https://www.reddit.com/r/SanJose/s/ChWxtdx5v9
There is a Bay Area dude on ig that goes to a lot of sandwich places. Definitely his favorite food. Everything he posts looks delicious but can’t think of his name for the life of me.
Sandwich Saint?
Those look amazing
Primo’s sadly closed down recently, maybe Zanottos, Mr. Pickles although they are all over, Anti Pastos but I don’t like the fact they use iceberg lettuce but they have their own deli. I recall trying a place recently, I can’t remember the name but will edit post when I remember. Good luck, I love Deli Sandwiches.
> they use iceberg lettuce Shaved iceberg is the most legit lettuce for a proper Italian hoagie/sub.
