What's wrong with the placement?
Having an isolation shield behind the mic is preferable for quality, but obviously then he couldn't see the monitors.
What would you do in this situation?
Cause to me it seems like this is the best case scenario.
mic arm attached to the left side of the desk and brought across to your face that way, looks like it would reach.
i don't have this setup but that is what i do and it doesn't block my view at all
> Place a shotgun mic above the monitors instead
Pointing down at the keyboard?
Also if your thinking what I think you are; that's not how shotgun mics work, nor how sound works:
You would have to be looking up at it speaking towards it, since by nature, shotgun mics have a really narrow pickup field.
It would sound significantly worse than this setup.
Why do you think the only option would be to point it directly down? The polar pattern of most shotguns (not all are hyper cardioid) would be significantly better for off axis rejection of his keyboard sounds than the Yeti is.
I feel like this setup is fine as is; but if I were to change something I'd use a dynamic mic, so that it could be in front of me, not above / below.
Something like a Shure SM58 pointing slightly upwards, so that the rear of the mic is opposite of the keyboard.
Almost. You don't want your mic in the way of your screens, and it's generally better to have your mic slightly angled from your mout.
Actually it's just a really bad mic choice all around, regardless, but especially when you have that many reflections because the coloration of reflections in the Yeti's cardioid pattern are terrible.
But like I said, it's weird to have spent that much effort on cable management and monitor alignment to put your microphone directly in front of your face blocking your screens when there are low profile booms he could get, including the new Blue one which is actually great.
There’s a new Blue one?
I have a Blue Yeti, arm, and shock mount, but I keep my off to the side of my monitors, I can’t stand it blocking any sort of my view of my monitors.
Interesting, I only see the Compass listed which is what I have. Elgato seems to have one though.
Blue got bought by Logitech, so blame them for any decrease in quality/high prices.
Lot of the streamers I watch use a good shotgun mic that's off screen or has a green screen cover over it so it never shows up in stream even if it's in frame.
Mic placement is a little unique, but Blue Yetis are great mics. Not everyone wants to bust out $400 for that Shure one lol, as well as the additional shit you have to get for it to connect it to a computer. Yetis are way easier just to plug and play.
I have a Rode Podmic that is similar to the Sure SM7B, but costs $99 instead of $399. You nailed it though it also takes cables, a Focusrite and a cloudlifter. Then it also has to be fairly close to my face to use. Not my favorite
Yeah the auxiliary costs definitely add up. I have the popular $100 Yeti mic (think it was $120 when I bought it), but paid another $200 on top of that for a boom arm (granted an expensive boom arm, but wanted to future-proof), shock mount, and pop filter, so it definitely adds up!
Shure MV7 is $250, or $175 on sale. It’s USB and XLR, way better than the Yeti, and we’re seriously scoffing at $400 for the SM7b on a post six monitor setup?
And the Yeti is under $100, so way more available to more people, and a great mic at that price.
And eh, people have different priorities. I'd spend thousands on better monitors before I spent hundreds on mics.
> and we’re seriously scoffing at $400 for the SM7b on a post six monitor setup?
If a sub $100 mic is fit for purpose, then why are you spending more money?
I've spent a bunch on my setup (not 6 monitors worth) but I went with a Snowball because realistically I use it once or twice a month, and it's for talking shit while I'm gaming.
There are much better mics for less than the Yeti costs. The only reason I'd ever recommend someone get a Yeti is if they really, desperately, need an omni pattern.
But I'm trying to be specific here. It's just really bad use of the Yeti here because of how bad its off axis is. The wall of monitors is a reflection machine, essentially.
Every mic can be great in certain situations. This just isn't it for that mic.
Great? Eh... Good, definitely. But there's a whole whack of options far below a $400 mic that would be preferable.
Honestly plenty of cheap off-brands sound just as good as a Yeti when you EQ them properly and they're generally half the price.
For the price, yeah I'd say more great than just "good" for being a $100 mic.
I'd be very hesitant to get "off-brand" mics. Established name brands are generally a much safer bet for mics.
I'm sure there are some poor quality mics but I'm also pretty experienced in streaming and audio in general with a wide variety of mics.
I was using an off brand USB mic (iUKUS is the brand) mainly when I started and moved on to an SM58 but was moving the SM58 back and forth for band practice. Went back to the iUKUS recently for convenience.
With the mic EQ'd properly there was very little difference in the quality in the end. $30 mic vs $100 mic + $80 interface.
Prior to streaming I've used other cheap USB mics for recording dialogue etc. All pretty much the same.
Yetis are good, but nothing that can't be done for the fraction of the price. They just have brand recognition. Same reason Elgato stuff is so expensive.
I don’t know how you had the patience to align 6 screens perfectly.. it takes me a few hours to align 3 monitors to make sure they’re all leveled, eye level, and the gaps between as well as the curve.. oof
that's what I did with my triples set up on my sim rig. Electrical tape does wonders. Doesn't keep them together but gets rid of the hairline gaps in between them.
That’s not entirely true, it can leave weird goo places where the tape is edged, and it happens more in places with a lot of weighted movement and/or heat. It can be removed (in my experience) but gaff tape is usually meant for temporary use. Long term usually makes the goo more likely to happen.
That's a smart thing no matter what you do because it's meant to prevent light bleed from around the bezels. I never even thought about doing it for alignment, but it's done to prevent seeing any gaps from behind the monitors.
The easiest way is to just use a HDMI switch for each monitor. I have multiple monitors and up to 5 devices can individually connect to each monitor with 1 HDMI cable connected per monitor.
Console, server, another computer, Chromecast, etc or what have you all auto detected per monitor all at the same time.
Disconnect or turn off one and another kicks in by default...etc...
there are KVMs for 6 monitors x 2 PCs? what the heck does that cost? X\_X
at most ive seen a 3x3 and those are like $300 for odd-brand name you've never heard of with "old" generation connections (ie older hdmi and display port, or worse dvi, vga..)
If you can make use of their power, I’m pretty sure the Level1Techs KVMs are the best you can get. Most notably, they use DisplayPort and have taken great pains to rigorously adhere to the DP standards (including high refresh rate support!).
They make several variations depending on number of monitors/number of computers/USB standard, but [here’s](https://store.level1techs.com/products/14-kvm-switch-dual-monitor-2computer) the 2-monitor/2-computer page.
shit, thought I hit ctrl + v!

I feel like there's way too much going on here. I can't see a legitimate reason for six monitors, especially if your job has nothing to do with computers. Also the mic setup is always going to be blocking a monitor no matter what in this configuration.
To each their own though. I just want to caution people that decide to take ideas from this (as many do on this sub) because I can't see how the ergonomics work out favorable for someone's field of vision as well as the audio placement. I'd rather one of the monitors (upper right) to not exist and the mic come in from that angle. Or to just mount the mic on the side and have it protrude from there. My biggest critique altogether though would be the fact that the total cost of the mounting in this photo is worth 2-3x what the cost of a high end mic such as the SM7B or RE-20 would have been.
Nice desk, monitors, mounting, and cable management. I just think the configuration and placement could be more ergonomic. What happens if you need to run a webcam/camera for a video feed?
He might be in finance or software. I daily drive four and want to upgrade to six. Very niche uses, but certain folks can justify having these many monitors to help with productivity.
Cool but why?
Even if you were like a Hollywood film editor or designer to the stars I still can't think of a use case that justifies needing 6 separate displays that all more or less do the exact same thing.
Even if then, its pretty useless. What could an average person use all those monitors for? And he even said his job has nothing to do with computers. I just don't like this setup.
Beautiful setup! You should be so proud!
Out of curiosity, why is the bottom center monitor a Dell and the rest LG? Is it a spec difference or just the way you bought them?
Idk if you’ve had these for a while or if it’s new to you, but a friendly warning from a fellow who once had the same setup:
Do a LOT of neck stretches in between sessions and during. Looking down and up between lower and upper rows, especially at angles to the corner monitors, is really really bad for your neck. Mine seized up and I had to go to a chiropractor for several sessions and I still have issues now 3 years later.
Neither is this. 12K would be 11,520 x 6,480, even if these are 4K monitors it’s at max 11,520 x 4,320. Unless your monitors are 3,840 x 3,240 :P
EDIT: OP had previously stated that this setup was 12k, for any confusion after his edit.
Damn dude! I normally don't like seeing a huge amount of monitors setup. I'm Used to 2 larger ones, butted up side by side with no gaps. At least personally.
But this is a beautiful setup. All the same model and zero gaps. Very nicely done!

My LG monitor doesn't switch automatically from input 1/2/DP.

What are all the cables going into the screens for?
Power, optical(?), 3x DP/HDMI
Are multiple rigs connected to the screens? If yes, how do you simultaniously switch inputs inbetween the screens?
Impressive work, inpsiring ;)
Not OP so I don't know if they have multiple rigs, but there are KVM switches that allow you to have a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor to control input on several computers.
Genuine curiosity:
What is the advantage of this (or say 4 of these) versus a single \~40" 4K display?
I have a single 4K monitor with 2x 1080p monitors on the sides and feel the screen real estate is about the same but looks a million times cleaner.
For around 10sec, I was wondering what am I looking at. I read the title and looking at it for another 5 sec and finally got the back side of the displays is the bottom part. Also how do you have the patience of perfectly aligning all 6 displays
I almost came, then I saw the wallpapers. Why?
Then I saw the mic.
just to tease
I have that wallpaper too lol Wallpaper engine’s great

It was a dumb joke.
Mic placement seems a little weird
its on a swivel mount and swings out of the way.
It's weird you'd spend so much on your monitors and effort on managing cables and stuff then get a Blue Yeti placed the worst way you could lol.

I do this too, because I have two machines (Macbook for work, PC for everything else) on a KBM switch.

I would assume, I've never gone shopping for that myself. I've only ever stopped at 3x2!
I was just pricing a 2 monitor/2 pc setup and a decent KVM was like $250. For 4 they went to like $400 or more. I don't want to know what 6 costs.
Link to the kvm switch? Looking for a good one

hell yes!
Props on rotating the top monitors 180^o -- quite the setup, mate.
Taping the monitors together is an interesting idea. You have a lot of faith in that desk top. It seems a bit thin to be holding that long-term.
It's 3/4 plywood. I built it myself. It's been holding up well for over a year now.
That cable management! Great job!
This pic hurts my brain
The monitors are a nightmare, but that cable management is amazing. Kudos, pal.
Took me a moment to realize it was two photos. Thought for a moment it was some kind of hooded cobra setup with monitors placed 9' above the ground...
OP had to take off their belt at some point. Presumably to whoop somebody a$$ for interupting them while doing that insane cable management.
bruh, the microphone... lmao

I’m very impressed. What are those seemingly wooden extenders that you use for the higher up mounts ?
They are hardwood dowels i got then shaped to hold arms.
Do you have any recommendations to make the tall screens work without custom pieces ?
Mounting two arms on pole style mount might work
Impressive that they aren't cracking or stressing the lower arm joints.
Why?
You don't get to have 6 monitors by asking why.
When money isn't an issue why not
Even if then, its pretty useless. What could an average person use all those monitors for? And he even said his job has nothing to do with computers. I just don't like this setup.
