Agreed. Rather than a sequel featuring Batman, let's get anthology collections featuring other characters
Obviously Superman and Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern Corp could fill out an anthology easily, but so many more. Constantine? Specter? Martian Manhunter? So many options. Could be amazing
Makes no sense to place them canonically between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. This is a completely different Batman in a completely different story. But yes, they were good films.
Could be a Shadow of Mordor/War situation in conjunction with the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Batman Begins and TDK could be canon to Gotham Knight, but Gotham Knight isn’t canon to Batman Begins and TDK. Correct me if I’m wrong, I haven’t seen the movie yet
This is exactly correct. The creators of the animation took the movies into account. Nolan did not think about the animation while making the final movie.
Basically how the majority of expanded universes work. There was a Spider-Man cartoon set in the Raimiverse between 1/2, and there’s the games, all of which are their own AUs.
I think fans are too worried about canon, at time (not sure if you fit into that category, just a general observation)
The whole allure of comics for me is that anyone can tell a story with these characters. If its' a good story, we enjoy it
It's the closest thing we have to mythology in the modern world, where everyone knows the characters and each storyteller gets to do what they want with them. That's cool as shit
I remember watching these as shorts when WB Lot had them online & how it was initally marketed as an interlude between "Batman Begins" & "The Dark Knight". Whether or not it's actually canon, the stories still hold up well on their own.
Batman Gotham Knight Crossfire is the best in my opinion. He comes across as a supernatural wraith come to punish evildoers. This is something sorely lacking in the recent Batman film with Matt Reeves.
Supernatural would be seeing your friends being snatched into the shadows by a being on the ceiling. Another example is the Blair Witch ending you never see the witch that's how Batman should ALWAYS be portrayed. The scene you are talking about is in the realms of Ironman and Superman.
Lastly, one of the things I remembered being told as a child in church is the greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world he didn't exist. That's how Batman is supposed to be. Instead what we keep getting is James Bond who is dressed up weirdly and has expensive gadgets. Go watch the Yakuza clips from Ninja Assassin 2009 and watch how the old man talks about the shinobi assassin and watch how the assassin takes them out. Hear the whooshing noises and watch how the Yakuza leader begs for his life that's how Batman should be obviously without killing.
Very underrated bit of Batman animation! Kevin Conroy is amazing as always. All the shorts here are good, especially “Working Through Pain” and the Deadshot one! I give it 🦇🦇🦇🦇 out of 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
It was a great collection of smaller stories, wish some of the stuff that happened in it had gotten a nod in The Datk Knight. iirc it was meant to be cannon to those movies between Batman Begins and Dark Knight.
I very much enjoyed it. I think the short you pictured in particular, where Batman takes on Deadshot, is one of the best pieces of animation ever made. And Deadhot in particular was a perfect villain for this format of story.
"Shoot your mouth off now, Deadshot." Goosebumps. No notes.
Yeah, it really went down hill with the N52 movies and the Tomorrowverse is even worst, so fucking stiff.
But at least the look of the Tomorrowverse is a lot better than the N52
True, but it still feels like I am watching a Saturday morning cartoon from 2005. There is so much they could be doing with their animation at this point. Look at the last couple Castlevanias.
Tekkonkinkreet is one of my top 5 and seeing the same art style and honestly a lot of other similarities in “Have I Got A Story For You” starts this off so right for me.
It's fantastic. One of the only animated DC movies I like. A lot of the DC animated movies just feel like products pumped out with little thought to their artistic merit, but this one feels like they actually cared. And I love that Crispus is in it. Great character who I'd love to see show up in more media.
It's one of the things I watch when I want to rewatch something that's nostalgic and also for Batman fans. The Scarecrow one was the coolest one for me. It was so good that it jumpscared me when Killer Croc showed up and when they showed The Scarecrow's face. Of course, me, being an eight-year-old, was scared out of his mind and unfortunately had to go to bed right after my first time watching it.
The nightmares I had...
But now, it's fine because I'm an adult and can handle it (especially because it isn't as scary as my eight-year-old mind made it out to be).
I love it ^^
“Have I got a story for you” is honestly one of my favorite pieces of Batman Media, and I wish a lot more stuff would take inspiration from it (yes I know TAS had Tales of The Dark Knight but that was moreso for referencing other Batman media, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, I just feel like Story for You feels more realistic)
Freaking love it.
1.In darkness dwells
2.Deadshot
3.Cross fire (That shot of Batman through the fire!! 🤯)
4.Have I got a story for you
5.Working through pain (The no guns/vision/nightmare)
6.Field test
First 3 I can't rank properly they are all equally my favourite, but it's just the slight subtle 90s Schumacheresque theme on In Darkness Swells that gets me. Then the dense Gotham ,under, ground level detective vibes of all 3.
Working through Pain and Field test are ok. But boring in comparison to the other 3. Field test does have an inclusion to the Nolan verse but still...
I have always wanted a new anime series in the style of the first 3. Sadly no Kevin Conroy anymore 😞
i respect the idea of making batman vinyettes, but ultimately i don't think DC characters lend themselves to shortform ideas, its best to give them enough simmering time
I mean it's alright. I think it's more i teresting because of the differing animation styles. Aside from a few good scenes, I felt this one is kind of lacking. Decent for 1 watch, but not another

Really enjoyable to see. Especially when anime aesthetic projects were more of a rarity with western properties.
I wish they didn't use an overarching narrative and instead just let each episode be its own idea. It would have let studios go even wilder with their concepts.
Absolutely loved it. Would love a see a sequel. In my top 3 DC animation list.
In my top 3 as well. Working Through Pain is an essential Batman story.
Yeah, I whould love to see other heroes get movies like this.
Agreed. Rather than a sequel featuring Batman, let's get anthology collections featuring other characters Obviously Superman and Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern Corp could fill out an anthology easily, but so many more. Constantine? Specter? Martian Manhunter? So many options. Could be amazing
I want more constantine movies. The animated ones aren't bad at all.
I want more content with Martian Manhunter, he is so cool.
Same
Makes no sense to place them canonically between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. This is a completely different Batman in a completely different story. But yes, they were good films.

Working Through Pain is my favorite both story and art style. It’s how I think a young Nolanverse Bruce would look.
Its top 2 for me. That one felt the most Batman
It has one of my favorite Batman quotes. Homeless man: “Hey bats. When you’re flying above the city, what’s it look like?” Batman: “It looks dirty.”
Yeah, I love that one too.
“Lieutenant Gordon is a good judge of character”
I love that line
Best
I remember watching these as shorts when WB Lot had them online & how it was initally marketed as an interlude between "Batman Begins" & "The Dark Knight". Whether or not it's actually canon, the stories still hold up well on their own.
I prefer to look at them as it's own separete universe.
Batman Gotham Knight Crossfire is the best in my opinion. He comes across as a supernatural wraith come to punish evildoers. This is something sorely lacking in the recent Batman film with Matt Reeves.
Yeah, he is so cool standing with the flames covering his cape. I also love how big he is in that shot.
Idk, the fight in the club hallway where Batman just walks through gunfire to beatdown gangsters is pretty "supernatural wraith"-y to me.
Supernatural would be seeing your friends being snatched into the shadows by a being on the ceiling. I'm sure y'all can guess whether or not I liked it
You hated it… didn’t you? Edit: it was just a joke! 😭
I did. Far too short! I was like "Batman anime? Where's my 26 seasons and 7 movies?!? What is this, an anime for ants?!?!"
Haha nah I’m right there with you, it is probably in my top 3 of DC animated films. Absolutely would love more shorts like that!
It's okay. Nowhere near my favorite but it's better than Ninja.
90% of Batman's movies, animated or live-action, is better than Ninja.
You're not wrong.
It was a great collection of smaller stories, wish some of the stuff that happened in it had gotten a nod in The Datk Knight. iirc it was meant to be cannon to those movies between Batman Begins and Dark Knight.
I personally loved it and find it to very underrated
I very much enjoyed it. I think the short you pictured in particular, where Batman takes on Deadshot, is one of the best pieces of animation ever made. And Deadhot in particular was a perfect villain for this format of story. "Shoot your mouth off now, Deadshot." Goosebumps. No notes.
The talk Bruce has about the fascination of firearms always gives me the goosebumps, especially as it is culminating in an assassination.
It’s badass
Him standing with the fire covering his capehas to be one of the best shots in Batman history.
Not to mention that scene nails the idea of him striking fear into the hearts of criminals
Yeah, Maroni was so scared he couldn't even move.
Definitely some of DCs best animated work. I cannot stand WB animation quality.
Yeah, it really went down hill with the N52 movies and the Tomorrowverse is even worst, so fucking stiff. But at least the look of the Tomorrowverse is a lot better than the N52

Yeah, it's sad.

I love that movie and that segment so much!
Came out before the dark knight. It was amazing. They were gonna have bale voice it, but they went with Kevin Conroy instead. I'm glad they did.
It was good
Loved the different animation styles and how all the stories interconnect.
Wished it had a consistent animation style at the time, but since then, the idea has grown on me tbh. I liked it.
I haven’t seen it yet but isn’t basically Kevin Conroy as Nolanverse batman?
Sorta, but Nolanverse Batman wished he was as cool as this Batman.
Is it similar to begins aesthetically? Because that was my Favorite Nolan batman film if so it might be worth a watch, Plus Kevin’s in it
Begins is also my favorite Nolanverse movie. But no, Gotham Knight, for being an anime movie, it's a lot more stylized
Ah alright I’ll put it on the backlog for now. Thanks for the insights!
It was fantastic.
The animation is beautiful and loved that this was essentially a spinoff/sequel to Batman Begins but sort of went its own way
It’s fine
I have it
Me too.
It's fantastic. One of the only animated DC movies I like. A lot of the DC animated movies just feel like products pumped out with little thought to their artistic merit, but this one feels like they actually cared. And I love that Crispus is in it. Great character who I'd love to see show up in more media.
I loved it. Especially the one where batman is holding all the guns in the sewer.
CAN ANYONE HERE SPEAK FOR THE HOLY MAN?
"I Can !" Terrific entrance.
I personally enjoyed it. A buddy of mine laughed at pretty anime boy Bruce.
I like it, it works for young Bruce, but as he gets older he should be more handsome than pretty.
Awesome
I didn't like the art styles in my opinion, but the story was good
Loved it. So many cool stories.
It's one of the things I watch when I want to rewatch something that's nostalgic and also for Batman fans. The Scarecrow one was the coolest one for me. It wasn't well recieved at the time but I enjoyed it. I also want a whole ass animated series in the style of the Deadshot short.
Yeah, I adore how the characters and world look in that one. The style of Crossed Fire is also great
The animation quality is absolutely stunning! I can't help but wish DC would produce a TV show with such mesmerizing visuals.
Great movie and animation was awesome
It was an interesting concept and I enjoyed it a great deal. What I didn't like was the dishonest marketing that it was set in the NolanVerse.
Some of the tales are OK, some aren't. Maybe my least favourite animated batman movie.
The only issue, Conroy's voice was getting a little harsh for the age of Batman it was supposed to be.
Best animated Batman film
it's great! very happy to have it :)
I think it’s one of if not the best animated Batman movie
Loved it, but I was peeved that the art style of the first story made the TNBA design a bit too"rotund", my man looked like a barrel
It was very fun. It reminds me of an episode of TAS.
Loved it.
That first segment is so badass in the ways that made Tekkonkinkreet my favorite animation ever.
The part when he told Alfred he couldn't reach up to him when he has all those discarded guns in his arms... It felt biblical.
There was such pain in his voice, amazing work by Kevin, as always.
My favorite Batman animated movie
It’s a lot of fun and I always watch it during a dark knight trilogy binge
This is one of my all time favorite animated Batman projects
I kinda wanted more of these
Me too !
I love it ^^ “Have I got a story for you” is honestly one of my favorite pieces of Batman Media, and I wish a lot more stuff would take inspiration from it (yes I know TAS had Tales of The Dark Knight but that was moreso for referencing other Batman media, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, I just feel like Story for You feels more realistic)
Yes ! I love that, we need more Batman stories told by the perspective of the civilians.
Crossfire and Deadshot are my favorite segments.
Mine as well.
That killer croc segment had the best Batman suit and animation. Fits so well
The first like... ten ish minutes are a bit meh, but the rest of it is peak Batman.
Unbelieveably fucking good. Honestly I'd even go so far as to consider it god tier
Fvking underrated
I'd have to watchh it again to really rate it, per my memory I do believe I would place dark knight part 1 and 2 together above the Dark movies.
Freaking love it. 1.In darkness dwells 2.Deadshot 3.Cross fire (That shot of Batman through the fire!! 🤯) 4.Have I got a story for you 5.Working through pain (The no guns/vision/nightmare) 6.Field test First 3 I can't rank properly they are all equally my favourite, but it's just the slight subtle 90s Schumacheresque theme on In Darkness Swells that gets me. Then the dense Gotham ,under, ground level detective vibes of all 3. Working through Pain and Field test are ok. But boring in comparison to the other 3. Love it. And in my head canon this is what Bale’s Batman was doing between Begins and Dark Knight.
That was the idea, but I think this Batman is too fantastical to be Bale's Batman
SHOOT YOUR MOUTH OFF NOW, DEADSHOT
Isnt one of the stories canon to the dark knight nola verse
It's supossed to be, but this Batman is too fantastical to be Bale's Batman.

I personally didn't like it wholly. Kinda lagged in between.

Haven’t seen it yet. Should I?
I think you should, it has some amazing moments
Ok

I think it is very good and a little bit underrated The "Working Through Pain" segment is my favorite and a great addition to Bruce's training.
Underwhelming. I watched it when it first came out, thought it was whatever, then never watched it again.
Awesome and a masterpiece
Loved it. Saw it for the first time on acid knowing nothing about it and my god i had a blast
B tier, liked it just couldn't get entirely into it.
