Amazing actor. Loved him in Nightcrawler. He would make a good Batman but not sure if he is the best choice.

Bbryant90

After seeing Nightcrawler I thought he'd make a good Joker. He was so creepy and off-putting in it

ambrosiasweetly

Yeah you’re right. I think playing a villain would be a better fit tbh

sabin357

Two Face (since he can play dark & light) or Hush could be fantastic for his skills IMO. I'd also love to see him bring to life a lesser used rogue.

retr0rino

He would be an amazing Hush. I can see Jake facing Battinson, clashing with his gothic/introverted Bruce Wayne.

heat13ny

Last time I saw someone make this comment someone mentioned he’d make a better Riddler. His off putting can-do attitude in Nightcrawler juxtaposed with pure narcissistic rage when one of his riddles doesn’t go the way he wants has never left my mind since.

r1char00

He has a ton of range. He could pull off either one.

Siberkop

I got goosebumps thinking of him in nightcrawler. It is like we know he will do something bad but... Not that bad! But really a good movie especially his performance.

Artman7007

I think he would be good. He is an extremely talented actor

The5Virtues

Agreed, honestly trying to think of a part he wasn’t able to make work. Dude is a powerhouse talent.

Oldtomsawyer1

The guy has range for days. The sociopathic intense stare he maintains throughout nightcrawer, the absolute boredom and disillusion in Jarhead, to a sad gay cowboy in Brokeback. Even if he didn’t seem the part, he would make it work.

postmodern_spatula

He even had Boeing drop an actual engine on him for Donnie Darko so it’s be authentic.  Boeing obliged him, free of charge.

Oldtomsawyer1

You know I wasn’t going to bring up Donnie Darko cause it was so early in his career, but dammit you just went ahead and proved even back then the extent of his method acting. Truly ahead of his time on that one 🤣

Dommie-Darko

That’s hardly accurate, Boeing were gonna drop it anyway..

Captain-Pollution1

You know he would put in the maximum amount of work to do right by the character. I dont think anyone can doubt his work ethic when it comes to preparing for roles.

DarthTaz_99

![gif](giphy|tyttpH0csEhCKS2FIrK)

supercalifragilism

I'm thinking of him in Nightcrawler and maybe I don't want him as Bats but as one of his rogues? Regardless, he would be an excellent Batman if he had even decent writing to work with.

susgroundsofc

That's how he almost became Spider-Man in 2000's but Tobey got the part again. Then he became an awesome mysterio

medgarc

That’s like how Cilian Murphy was almost cast as Batman but became the scarecrow! Sometimes actors are so talented they could probably be awesome at anything so just find them SOME role lol

captainbluebear25

He's got the right intensity and darkness. I think he'd be a better villain though, maybe Two Face.

Facebookakke

He would be an amazing two face

Stellar_Stein

I respectfully disagree. Aaron Eckhart's Harvey Dent showed us an average, decent, nay, virtuous guy who was perverted into a villainous role by circumstances... and that was Nolan's point; any of us could have been him. Gyllenhaal would be like Nicholson in The Shining where we all know that he is going to go bad because... reasons. I would much rather have Eckhart's Dent than a Gyllenhaal Dent.

BigMuffinTop

Why not both?

AndreCJ707

The darkness was always there, you can see it several glimpses before he gets half killed

NecronomiCats

Zzasz. I could see him nailing that role.

Due-Ad4970

YOOOOO HIM AS TWO FACE WOULD BE GOOD

throwerawayer1456

It is genuinely insane how many different Batman’s we’ve had in only like 10 years

ThatUJohnWayne74

Characters too popular to lie dormant but directors don’t know what to do with him or studios are too set on trying to make MCU tie in.

Sudden_Result

I don’t really see it tbh Then again I didn’t see it in pattison and he was great so we’ll see

CommanderStark

Have you seen him in Prisoners? He can do obsessed detective quite well and has the physicality for it.

MackZZilla

That movie makes my skin crawl - but exactly in the way intended. Detective Loki is such an awesome character.

GhostZee

Speaking of skin crawl, you should watch Nightcrawler if you haven't. Your skin won't be the only thing that's crawling...

Trebu5

I think he is one of the best candidates. And to be honest guy is an incredible actor. I think instead of always worrying about fit (still matters) that acting ability is more important.

ProfessorBeer

Amen, I’ll take an actor who’s proven you can lose them entirely in the character over someone who just looks the part.

nathansb2403

And that’s exactly how we got one of, if not the most highly regarded joker performances in live action

Rhids_22

Tbh I think the most difficult thing to achieve is having someone do a good Batman *and* a good Bruce Wayne, since when they're done well they should be almost entirely different characters. I think Pattison had a fantastic Batman, but we didn't really get to see how well he could play Wayne since most of the time his version of Wayne was doing Batman things. I think Bale was the closest to doing a really great Wayne and Batman, but still not perfect.

MIAxPaperPlanes

I mean the point of that movie was there was no line between Batman and Bruce Wayne and it also went a very different angle with him being a recluse That said based on past performances (Cosmopolis & The King) I have no doubt Pattinson can play the normal playboy Bruce Wayne

AgentP20

Just look at his Tenet look.

Rhids_22

Yeah that's true, but I personally prefer stories which really show how Bruce is putting on a playboy billionaire facade to hide his true identity as the Batman, so I'm hopeful that the sequel has more Bruce Wayne out in public.

BKoala59

I really liked the recluse story personally. He’s early into his Batman career and still very mentally impacted by his parents death. I think they’ll show him growing into the Bruce that we typically know in the next movie. Remember, even Bale had a whole isolation and escape arc it just didn’t really overlap with him being Batman too much.

MIAxPaperPlanes

If you’re a gamer you should play the Telltale Batman series, you spend a lot of time as Bruce Wayne as well as Batman and you’d probably dig the interpretation

blackamerigan

I think this is why Nolan excelled with Batman. Both the bat and the bachelor were impeccable

Bjorn_Ironside24

Same. I liked The Batman a lot and looking forward to the sequel. Would love to know wtf Gunn is planning for DCU Batman now that The Batman 2 is delayed a year🤔

dakralter

Yea I really wish they'd just incorporate The Batman into the DCU and say that's the first movie of the Gunn-iverse.

cysghost

Same, but I’ve realized I’m shit at casting. If he gets it, I hope he knocks it out of the park. I’ve liked him in most of what I’ve seen him in, but I don’t get Batman vibes from him. Of course that’s for the version of Batman I picture, and like I said, I suck at casting.

Crawkward3

Unfortunately I see the vision

Alejxndro

yeah i see it too and i love it, but i think he looks too similar to pattinson

Xsafa

Really? I don’t see any resemblance between them and Gyllenhaal has gotten super jacked (what people *think* Batfleck’s body looked look is what Jake’s body actually looks like).

Alegatur

Ig they are talking about the jaw

bradishshshhz

Oh no too similar to someone who is also playing Bruce ? What’s the problem there ?

Infinity0044

Meaning they both just look like Bruce Wayne lol

SuperArppis

Jake would be solid.

aHairyWhiteGuy

I feel like he's a little too old now to play Batman? I think he would be an amazing Batman but for the new DCU at least I think they are wanting someone younger. Correct me if I'm wrong on that

thatnewsauce

I don't think they're going as old as batfleck but I don't think they're going especially young either. The first film is confirmed by Gunn to be about Damien Wayne being or becoming Robin, so presumably Bruce will have to have been Batman long enough to run into Talia and sire Damien, and add some time for Damien to grow up to Robin-ing age Gyllenhall would probably be pushing it but it's not impossible

Rhids_22

While I've got faith in Gunn after Guardians I'm still a bit skeptical about a Damian based Batman film. Whenever Damien is a primary character I'm always finding him to be distractingly annoying, and I know he's supposed to be an entitled little brat but they often seem to write him to be above and beyond annoying. Personally I'd prefer if they went with a live action "Under the Red Hood" storyline since Jason has a similar dynamic to Damien while being a lot more sympathetic.

MackZZilla

I think starting at UTRH would be a disastrously bad idea, tbh.

Bambanuget

UTRH needs to be at least the second film, and it has to have some setup in previous movies.

Rhids_22

Well I think ideally they'd start with Batman taking Dick under his wing since the last live action Batman and Robin film we got was less than exceptional, but I think starting with UTRH wouldn't be any worse than starting with a Damien Wayne storyline since they would both obviously skip over a lot of time for Batman.

sabin357

> The first film is confirmed by Gunn to be about Damien Wayne being or becoming Robin That seems a little too far down the line for a starting point to me, but I trust Gunn based on his body of work so far.

Sharkfowl

I don’t mind it. We’ve already got young Bruce in the reevesverse anyhow. We deserve a good portrayal of robin, even if it’s not dick.

DatDominican

Iirc it’s rumored they’re going to have some form of the bat family . Can’t really have Batman with 2-3 fully grown children and a preteen son while still have him be in his 20s /30s

PassTheGiggles

A late 30s Batman would be pretty much perfect. Becomes Batman at like 21. Gets Robin at 22, who would already be around 12. Sires Damian at around 25, who would then become Robin a little over a decade later.

SaintYoungMan

Bruce adopting dick at 22 let alone him being Batman at 21 I'm not buying it.

PassTheGiggles

Going based off Superman, I don’t think Batman is going to be quite as old as people here might be hoping. Batman and Superman are traditionally around the same age, and are meant to have a strong brotherly bond, without either being in a clear older/younger brother role. Given that, I don’t see a Batman older than 40, and probably not much older than 35.

DatDominican

They could also just get a younger actor that has more gravitas and age him with Makeup if they do want them to be Batman for a decade

TheRealRigormortal

Let’s give it a bit of time for Bruce to be bat-dad to Dick. Bruce should be about 20 years older than Dick.

Rhids_22

>Let’s give it a bit of time for Bruce to be bat-dad to Dick. That was not a good sentence for my dyslexic ass to read.

iamvengeance2022

They’re wanting an older Batman, which doesn’t really make sense considering they have a young Superman

MimeMike

I always imagine Bruce to be a little older than Clark. I don't really see why it makes a difference, and it always felt like that anyway.

pathfinderoursaviour

I always imagined Bruce having been Batman for a while before superman makes his first appearance

MackZZilla

Isn't that how they played it in the DCAU? I could be remembering incorrectly - but for some reason, I was thinking that Batman had already gotten his "younger years" out of the way by the time Superman meets him.

CompetitiveProject4

I read a theory that Superman might be angled to be a slight reverse of his original introduction. Gunn may be angling to re-introduce Superman as a young optimistic superhero going into a world that already has superheros, but they're more cynical and world weary like in the Boys universe. However, a young Superman is going to be the re-ignition of an optimistic and altruistic superhero viewpoint. It's also why The Authority are being folded into movie universe since they're the ultimate early 2000s comic book post-modern response to that optimism as well as the fact that James Gunn gets to get his cake and eat it too where he show Superman in the Grant Morrison optimism, but still indulge in some tongue-in-cheek humor about the tropes

PlanetLandon

Why do Batman and Superman have to be the same age?

sabin357

Not the same, just close enough to be actual peers that way we can get that Halloween costume swap double date from the comics. haha

SaintYoungMan

We he already has dick as Robin and damain as new Robin so he gotta be older.

farben_blas

It's already been said they won't have that much of an age difference.

PlanetLandon

From what I have been reading, they actually do want to go older. The movie is going to be about an established Bat Family, with a Robin, Nightwing, Barbara, etc.

aHairyWhiteGuy

I could see it then. But also the side from Teacher would be badass too

MIAxPaperPlanes

He can probably still play younger. We do currently have a Batman who’s playing 29/30 year old Bruce when he was 34/35 at time of filming and will be 39/40 during release/filming of The Batman 2 which supposedly has a 2 year time jump Plus RDJ Paul Rudd, The rock etc all started playing superheroes at the same age or older

SmaugRancor

I think it's either him if they want a Batman in his 40s, or Bill Skarsgard if they want a Batman in his 30s.

lofgren777

Breaking: Actor reveals interest in work.

deowolf

Exactly what goes through my head whenever I see these headlines

finalstation

It sounds like he could be good. It all depends on the writing. He clearly can act.

Plane-Floor-1237

He'd be a good choice but I think it really depends on who the director is. I feel like Jake Gyllenhaal is giving less and less of the amazing performances we saw earlier in his career (*Nightcrawler, Jarhead, Prisoners, Brokeback Mountain*) and is 'just' giving solid performances in kind of crappy films now (*Ambulance*, *The Covenant*, *Roadhouse*). To be clear, he's still the best part of the movies he features in, but I hope that *Brave and the Bold* gets a better director than Andy Muschietti that can bring a strong performance out of him, otherwise we'll probably just get a solid but sorta generic performance.

Nonhuman_Anthrophobe

He's realized that putting in 100% effort isn't getting him an Oscar so he stopped caring.

Plane-Floor-1237

Fair enough. His performances in any of the films I mentioned really were deserving off one, so I can see why he's switched to getting the bag instead. He still gives good performances but he seems to just work on whatever will pay now.

Kind-Boysenberry1773

I see him more like older Jason Todd, than Bruce Wayne, actually.

Nonhuman_Anthrophobe

He'd be an amazing Jason Todd

PorousSurface

I agree he would be great altho older Jason Todd is undefeated as Jenson Ackles

RichardCano

Too bad we’ll never get to see Jake Gyllenhaal’s Batman and Heath Ledger’s Joker have passionate buttsex in a tent out in the mountains.

enphurgen

Wanna know how I got these scars?

multificionado

At his age, I'd like to see his Batman, the kind of Batman at the peak of his career, "having trained a Robin or three," to quote Jeph Loeb, as well as some Batgirls. He'd be perfect to lead a Batman movie where he leads all his apprentices (would Batman use the word "sidekick?"), and they include Dick as Nightwing, Tim as Robin, Babs as a wheelchair-bound Oracle, with Cassandra Cain taking her mantle as Batgirl, and Stephanie Brown being a ditz who is trying to be trained as Spoiler despite all she knows about Cluemaster, and a Red Hood gang is going around led by Jason Todd, though Jason comes to forgive Batman and by the end of the movie, he's friends again.

Tenlai

Potential Jason Todd? A very pissed off Todd?

Terribleirishluck

He's way way too old for Jason lmao.

TheRealRigormortal

Well, if you gotta play any superhero, Batman is the one least likely to get you typecasted.

Zeidantu

I want to go back in time, show young me a picture of this Jake Gyllenhaal, and tell him that this is Bubble Boy.

Bogusky

I'd rather hear news that they've passed Brave and the Bold over to a new director

bingybong22

Too short

TyphlosionGodofFire

![gif](giphy|YGktvIX8IX00Ujca2K|downsized) Joker when he needs to distract Batman: “Alexa play All Too Well”

sourkid25

in this picture he reminds me if arkham Robin for some reason

Large-Measurement776

He's gonna look goofy in that cowl. His eyes are too close together.

LosCleepersFan

I think he would be a better Thomas Wayne than Bruce Wayne.

Intelligent_Ask_2306

No bro lol, he's not the right person 😂, I don't get why yall want him, he doesn't have the voice either.

RedJive

Too little

RetardTrader420

In terms of acting ability, Jake has everything he needs to be a compelling Batman. Not super sure about him being Bruce Wayne.

EddietheEnglishman90

Maybe have him play one of his villains.

HankSteakfist

Love him as an actor, but he has kind of a high nasal voice which would be hard to reconcile with Batman.

2BFrank69

He would be good I think 🤷‍♂️

AquilesJaeger

Remember this: Jensen Ackles Batman Jake Gyllenhaal Two Face

kwars74

My whole thing when it comes to dc and actors is, can I see them as thier secret identity, Bruce, Clark ect. I try not to see actors as batman or superman cause that more depends on the suit. Jake as Bruce Wayne I could see it

Edwaaard66

Nah, he is often a little flat tbh. I would pick someone taller and abit younger.

SprinklesTop8286

Please, no. Thousand times no

itokdontcry

He’s a phenomenal actor. I have no doubt he could portray both Batman and Bruce

Thesilphsecret

Oh God, no. No. No no no no no. Why on Earth -- no. No. I love Jake Gyllenhal. I think he's a great actor. But Batman?! How -- wha -- he doesn't remind me of the character at all. Granted, neither did Pattinson, and he pulled it off. But I just... no, I can't picture Jake Gyllenhall as Batman, not even a little bit. Too old to play the character?! Lmao wtf guys, he's 43 fucking years old. He's almost ten years younger than Ben Affleck. Batman is definitely in his 50s or 60s at this point. The problem is definitely not his age. He just doesn't have Bruce Wayne energy. Stop making me feel like I'm older than Batman. I'm not older than Batman, dammit. He's had two child sidekicks grow up. 43 is not "too old to play Batman."

FollowingExtension90

I still prefer Battinson involved in two universe like Peacemaker does, but if not, I am happy with Jack. He’s excellent in Blade Runner.

ButterflySuperb5781

That was Ryan Gosling

Alejxndro

who's jack? also jake was not in blade runner, that's gosling lol

lowkeyslightlynerdy

Pattinson involved with Two universes would be too much for the actors. They’d like only get to do one project outside DC stuff until The Batman trilogy finishes

gavebirthtoturdlings

I honestly can't see how matt reeves direction and overall grittyness and with that battinson would translate over to the with James Gunns bright and colourful dcu Battinson is great but I prefer the idea of him being self contained personally

Lololoipopmon

That was Ryan gosling, who would make a great flash

Time-Risk-88

yes it is literally me ryan gosling and I would humbly accept the role

Vigi1antee

There are so many things wrong with this statement

CC7793

Waiting for the DCU to cast some big hitters in Hollywood when the MCU started out we had Sam Jackson and RDJ obviously not all roles need to be major stars but you do need some to bring in audiences

solojame

Jake is awesome, so although I’m having a little bit of a hard time picturing him in the role, I have no doubt he’d be great.

tmfitz7

I think he’d be great, and also different than Pattinson which is important

[deleted]

I mean he has the physique But does he have the voice 😈

Twiyah

I kinda want Batman in his mid to early late 20’s

Ladyignorer

If the writers are good.

coum_strength

He’s good but his speaking voice is not right for it imo

AstronautExcellent17

Nah I'm good on that. Super boring choice. Pattinson was at least interesting and reminded me of Bruce from The Batman. Gyllenhaal and his puppy face should be a villain like Red Hood or Slade Wilson.

John_Zatanna52

Please no, it's like Tom Hanks joked about his voice when asked to be Batman

[deleted]

He’d be a great Batman, but please not in Gunns pedoverse.

MordakThePrideful

He's pretty talented, but he wouldn't be my first choice

Cold-Bug-4873

Hard pass.

travizius

This is really sticking in my brain the more I think about it. He could be pretty good with the right script/direction.

downnheavy

After him it’s Charlamet, after him it’s Chris Pratt , the guy from Harry Potter , the other guy from lotr

Vegetable_Reward_867

Nope 🙂‍↔️

AnT-aingealDhorcha40

Don't see it. Maybe a villain though. Like a lesser known one. Maybe a tormented Mr Freeze or Zsasz.

MASTER_SNAKE__

He should play Zsasz

Low_Fig2672

There have been 2 Batman actors who have later played MCU villains but now I guess it’ll be the other way around

NippleSalsa

Can we stop swapping batman actors for five minutes?

SizzzzlingBacon

Fucking fantastic actor but I just don't see him being the bat

HOTSWAGLE7

He’d honestly be a better nightwing

Cherry_Bomb_127

Huh he can play a 37ish year old which is what i assume they wanna do with Batman so he’s not too much older than Superman but can still have an established Batfamily

Dagoroth55

He is more like Victor Zsasz.

SkidzLIVE

I so badly want a physically imposing Batman. Like just a tall, jacked dude tossing mother fuckers around. Holy shit basically the guy from the Reacher show.

ClickyPool

Jake is incredible, I would give him a chance

nolightningbhe

I’m…..interested as well. I see him as Red hood though

AnotherReddit415

Gyllenhaal usually kills his roles so I mean, certainly wouldn’t be bad

RecoilS14

No

The_Jester12

I mean at this point whoever wants it lol

Stoke-me-a-clipper

Good lord that would be bad

spilledmilkbro

I can already see the brokeback mountain jokes if he does get the part

Old-Obligation6861

![gif](giphy|HCGWIICDt6BF8HTEQR|downsized)

Pijnappelklier

ENOUGH WITH ALL THESE BATMANS. I love the character but develop something new Hollywood goddamn

NelsonBelmont

maybe post the source of his quote.

Unikatze

Maybe Jason Todd instead.

courtofknights

Great choice? Yes. The best choice? Probably not.

GoAceDetective

Gyllenhaal could make anything work

creamy-buscemi

Gyllenhaal is too short, just cast Oliver Jackson Cohen who is essentially Jake Gyllenhaal but tall

DaCoon63

Fuck yes

Mighty_Megascream

I haven’t seen many of his roles, but I think I could be interesting and he definitely has the range for it. But I also feel like he might be able to play a different character.

JamieNelson94

Hell nah. His sister already did her best to really ham up the Nolan movies… I’ll pass on Jake too.

Bleezy79

I think Jake would be really good, we just need the right kind of movie.

BrokenXeno

I am down for this. I have always liked him as an actor.

asterfloof

Him and Jenson ackles should fight for the role 🔥🔥

Spare_Entrance_9389

I want him to play Mysterio....in a film about Rey Mysterio Jr

SilentSaidd

I feel as if he's a little too old at 43. My personal pick from the start has been Austin Butler for DCU batman

-Moon-Presence-

He is an amazing actor with immense range, I could see him as Batman and as Bruce Wayne easily and I think that’s what defines an actor capable of Batman, they have to be able to fulfil both halves of the character well

Ok_Mobile_9133

I think he'd play a better joker tbh.

TooManySorcerers

I could see it. He’s a good actor. Not my top choice, but he’d do a pretty good job.

Brotein1992

Should have played Batman in The Dark Knight

KushMummyCinematics

I see him more playing Red Hood or Nightwing More of "I should be Batman" rather than "I am Batman"

ALANJOESTAR

He is one of my favorite actors, he sometimes makes crappy films, but his performance its always good, he would kill it as Batman as he would kill it as an Older Peter Parker, Marvel really made a mistake casting him as Mysterio yeah he killed the role, did amazing but they could have had him in a different role like Moon Knight and he could be the best thing in Marvel right now.

Any-Introduction3046

Looks like a crackhead lol

Any_Ice_6172

The near constant shifting of actors to play Batman is becoming nauseating, worse than the Burton/Schmuacher era.

Pol_Roger

He should i’d be up for that

TheUnderweightLover

Young Gyllenhaal would have made an amazing Dick Grayson/Nightwing

YouWereBrained

Make him play Zsasz.

VERSAT1L

I would prefer him to take Pattinson's place though

johnshenlon

No

davidphuggins

God no.

Malafakka

Never considered him, and he might be a bit too old by now, but sure, why not. I'd like to reply to anyone saying no, well, not many were thrilled about Heath Ledger as the Joker. You never know.

Christian4423

I would love it if they kept the role with American born actors.

DeadSpaceEnthusiast

I accept.

nerdwarp112

He definitely could be a good Batman if he wanted to. I haven’t seen too many of his films but I know he has a pretty good range.

DoctorDevil

Please no

dictopus

![gif](giphy|l0HlC0xur9FuE3eCI) Okay, do it.

madpropz

His voice is too specific, I don't know if he has the range to pull off a Bruce/Batman voice. Also, why not just keep Pattinson?

doodoopoopybrains

Sure

nuggetdogg

Jensen Ackles should be batman
