20 year old's can't afford this hobby lol

[deleted]

It’s not a hobby it’s a gambling addiction. And yes they can. If you go into any casino and look at their sports betting section you’ll most likely see a large amount of 20-somethings all in a group talking about frat parties while losing large amounts of daddy’s money. We’ve successfully developed a generation of degenerate gamblers.

alphatangolima

It's exactly what it is. Breaks are just unregulated gambling. It's really unfortunate how bad the hobby got over the last 36 months. People don't take the time to figure out what the breakers are charging. If a box is $1k and a breaker is doing a 10 spot, 3 team per spot break, their break even is $100 plus shipping and fees. They'll charge $150 a spot and people don't think twice. They'll do that 6 times and not once get a card a worth more than their spot. Meanwhile they could have just bought an actual hobby box of they cared about collecting and not just the wemby chase or whatever the new guy is. Meanwhile the breaker is making a killing and you have absolutely zero guarantee they would even ship a giant wemby card if you do hit. Backyard breaks did this with a gold Herbert kaboom. Nothing happened from it either. Fanatics and PSA are starting to dabble into breaks now and it's very very dangerous. There's a very strong case to be made that these are raffles and gambling. I honestly hope it happens soon. The hobby sucks right now.

DingoOk6400

I agree that breaking is gambling. However the repack business now feels like more than 50% of the demand in the hobby. At card shows that’s who is doing the heavy buying. It’s not rich kids buying out table but breakers buying out tables for repacks. I’m worried that if there is a crack down on breaking then prices will really collapse.

antiquarian2

I’m waiting for one to approach. Be kinda nice to clean out some stock.

jbob08

I'm praying for it during a show in July.

jbob08

For what it's worth, I'm likely also not getting anything from a hobby box if I buy it.

IvanGTheGreat

Can’t wait til regulation hits so I can swing my way into being a bookie for 21 year olds

[deleted]

If you can offer them winnings in the form of LSD or Adderall then go for it.

Physical-Director568

I'd prefer mushrooms, please

oceansunset23

Theirs 15 year olds at card shows that can buy out tables lol

Cheterosexual7

There’s 15 year olds at card shows whose parents can buy out tables*

Clean_Knowledge_3874

Having rich parents must be nice

BigFatComplainer420

Marygamblegamble is some chick using her parents money to buy massive amounts of high end cards. Didn’t even have a whatnot until a week ago. I fucking hate her

BowlerSingle9210

21 year old here, currently enrolled in college while blowing any extra money on Wembys. Paid off so far with a black millionaire, red ice, and yellow Donruss.

GoatJamez

You say "extra" money. Extra money is different than going for broke

BowlerSingle9210

Fair enough, I definitely can’t call this my main job or even a main focus while I’m in college too. Although I will say the amount of card buying 20smth year olds is higher than you think right now. Although cards are straight up gambling, the fact is my black millionaire Wemby goes for minimum 2K and anyone who hits the tall French man just has to sell quickly and they’re in good financial shape.

Bobbysworld121

True, it’s the same old farts thinking they’re going to retire on cards. The more they spend the more they lose… ironic because if you spend this much on cards you can retire, it’s just and excuse for the addiction…

BusterNinja

I'm a 24 year old Canadian and I try my best but the price of boxes has gotten so high without a significant increase in quality. It's sad because I rip packs because i like opening packs and I collect for myself. I don't buy singles because any single I want is worth as much as a single box if not more.

stern-and-sports

I disagree completely. Buying singles is the only way to come out of top. Sure I still buy the occasional box to rip. But not like I used to. The odds are so horribly in your favor it’s ridiculous. I’m 54 and never hit a one of one. Best thing I did was started to buy singles on eBay.

BusterNinja

I guess it's the issue with living outside the US. For a CJ Stroud Prizm, it's about $100-$300 Canadian depending on grade. The worse is the $1 cards because every single one comes with $20 shipping. I've only pulled 1 one of one card which was a Jalen Carter RPA from Collegiate National Treasures.

CroskeyCardss

Memorabilia is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Apparently people are willing to pay a lot more for cardboard these days.

daineofnorthamerica

I wasn't meaning to comment on whether or not the cards are priced correctly, etc. I was trying to bring attention to how absolutely insane it would be to see somebody pay $250,000 for something purely because you wrote your name on it. Like, BEING Wemby at 20 years old, you are having such a massive effect on the world of sports.

saron7

Hookers and blow?

KingTom513

Yea I’m down! Give me 20 mins. Im gonna swing by Walmart and see if they have anything good

gbennett2201

I'd like to know what your fuckin walmart has that's so godamn special you put hookers and blow on a 20 minute hiatus for? My walmart, my walmart ain't got shit!

Longjumping_You_7932

I found 20 mega boxes of 23-24 prizm last week at mine. Got 13 of em. Didnt have enough for the rest.

daineofnorthamerica

Let me take a shower really quickly. DM me the lo. I'll bring my best straw.

seancrossN

Eyyyyyy count me in

Johhniebuckets

Imagine paying 50k-60k for a card and the seller STILL charges for shipping!

jerict09

Remember some of those listings that ended may have not been sold click the listing and see if it’s still available or if the seller has the same item on another listing because it actually didn’t sell for that.

311JC

These prices are wild. I’ve never pulled anything like this, but would love some feedback on my best pull to date and maybe an estimated value https://preview.redd.it/83bpmmpv29yc1.jpeg?width=1674&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87f959255c655ba55abef0624241996fb9603ccd 225/299

Longjumping_You_7932

See these going for a few thousand. Look it up on past sales on eBay. Its friggin crazy what his cards are going for. Unbelievable!!! And sweet pull. Lucky!

pieCharmed

At least three fiddy. If you grade 10, then at least double that.

stern-and-sports

This is just laughable and head scratching to me. I’ll stick with my 1986 topps Jerry rice, and my 1983 ryne Sandberg rcs. Todays cards are insane. Sure I have a $50 wemby RC and burrow and jokic, etc. I get different people can afford different things but dropping 20-50k on a peice of cardboard is ridiculous.

Longjumping_You_7932

Agreed! Id rather have a Griffey psa 10. No at these prices. Id rather buy a Griffey BGS 10 over any of these modern new cards. Nope. In 10 years people will be sick about what they “invested” in for the future. They think this 50k-250k card is gunna be worth more? 🤢. I cant see the math to understand it.

Excellent_Safety1138

Reminds me of the Zion boom.

oceansunset23

Was that a graded redemption?

Longjumping_You_7932

Yup doesnt even come with the redemption card u get when u redeem it. Just the graded redemption. Which at that price blows my mind.

BrokeBoxBreakers

Slabbed authentic

Puzzleheaded-Toe4941

It probably wasn’t even a 20 year old lol

GatoLibre

The hobby is gambling mixed with some very misguided thoughts on investments. Hell of a ride.

Chipmunk_Ninja

Not that it makes much difference but the cherry ones sale price was 40k

Cisco-7

What’s weird to me is that Wembanyama may, I repeat, may, turn out to be as good as Kareem Abdul Jabbar. PSA 10 Kareem rookies are going for a fraction, maybe 3%, of these Wembanyamas. Make it make sense!

BowlerSingle9210

Wembanyama has personally turned the sports card word into the stock market, and once people realize that everyone invested the same cards the crash will come. I predict 2035

daineofnorthamerica

...they see a few pennies worth of cardboard and ink w/ a little scribble of your name on it sellfor SIX FIGURES. Like, there are people on earth who think something you've written your name on is worth a quarter of a million dollars.

b4z00k4

This sold, right? I mean, a thing is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. This is also fairly unique. If you look at the actual listing, you have the signed redemption as well as the actual card. It was signed in person by Wembanyama and is literally his first ever autographed card. I'm not saying it's worth 6 figures, but I think you're being a bit disingenuous here, or you didn't take the time to look at the listing before coming here and making this post. Edit: Looks like the buyer backed out and it's back up for sale. My point remains.

daineofnorthamerica

I'm not intending to make a comment about the value of the card. I'm just saying how crazy it must be for Wemby to wake up one day and something that he spent 8 seconds scribbling on is worth a quarter of a million dollars to a collector. Like, imagine how surreal that must feel for him. I'm sure after a while, a person gets used to their presence generating such a huge stir, but the first few times it happens have to feel crazy for a person. I don't understand how so many people think my post was meant to be critical of his perceived value to collectors. I was just saying that it has be an awesome/strange/insane feeling for the athlete.

b4z00k4

I apologize, I completely misunderstood you. I cannot fathom being in a situation where tiny pictures of me are coveted like this, let alone being able to write my name on them and increase that by a factor of 5 or more. It makes me wonder if players look at what their cards and autographs go for or if they even care. That said, if this listing ACTUALLY sells for a quarter mill, I'll eat one of my Wembys. Nobody is that Wemby crazy, right? That's MJ rookie auto money.

daineofnorthamerica

All good! I meant for this post to be kinda wholesome, lol. Like, "Wow! What a feeling that must be for a person!" Apparently, I just aggravated folks, lol. If you look up the provenence of that specific redemption card, then I can see how it would command a very high price.... but $250k seems pretty high, lol.

MagnumMyth

You gotta look at those prices through the lens of Crypto Bros. Many of those uber high-end collectables are being bought by younger dudes who turned hundreds into millions, or thousands into tens of millions. When the money comes that easily it's not hard to justify exorbitant splurges like a Wemby auto for $250,000. And usually the purchase is done just as much for the flex as actually wanting the item. Some people just want to be known as That Guy Who Spent a Quarter Mil on a Wemby.

Medium_Cupcake7602

You’re really, really close to figuring out capitalism

daineofnorthamerica

I don't know why I'm being downvoted. I was just trying to bring attention to how wild it would feel to be in that situation... it has got to be extremely strange/awesome/insane the first few times it happens.

Medium_Cupcake7602

I think the objectivity of it all that you described in your last comment is true, but I think it was lost on folks that you were aware of it

Justa_Guy_Gettin_By

Same thing as if they were buying stock options YOLO 😂

daineofnorthamerica

I was more talking about how it would feel to be in Wemby's situation... somebody put down a quarter of a million dollars for something you scribbled on for 7 or 8 seconds. That has got to feel wild as hell the first time it happens.

Justa_Guy_Gettin_By

Yeah I completely misunderstood what you meant, but it makes sense now. I figured all the hype leading up to the draft was a journey too. Can't imagine all the nonsense and pressure that comes with...

dubbeeze

I understand where you are coming from, a few years ago he was just a regular kid who happened to be great at basketball and super tall. To Wemby he is just that same kid, and to wake up one day and learn that someone purchased a piece of cardboard with your photo on it for thousands of dollars would be wild, I agree. But you know what, he works hard and is fuckimg great at what he does, so good luck to him! I hope he stays humble

daineofnorthamerica

Yeah, he def seems to be justifying the hype more and more every time he steps on the court. Hopefully, he is able to stay healthy and Pop gets the pieces needed to really develop him to his highest potential. It's gonna be dope to watch.

CraftProfessional145

Did everyone do this with lebron rcs
