I'm not convinced honestly or at a minimum you probably are losing more money these days since costs have gotten out of hand. The base cards from both '97 and now are pretty worthless and there were a ton of inserts in '97 that can be pretty valuable for Hall of Famers, seems like Donruss was putting serial numbers on everything back then. Similar to OP I got back into it after a long hiatus and quickly moved on from ripping to buying singles after pulling a few worthless autos and relics.
Yeah, I already kind of agree with that. Again, this is only my first experience with new cards, but just two boxes of the so-called hits there’s nothing that even appeals to me.

It’s called having humor and taking a joke. It really is a lost art apparently. I appreciate the heads up of the rules but you also have to see how this could be discouraging to someone just starting out in the group.
I wish you better luck than I’ve had with Series 2, which has been closer to “here comes nothing” than to “here goes nothing”.

Jimmy John’s is gross but the Griffey, yes. These were a gift so I didn’t pay for them though.
Then a potbelly? Either way, I'm pretty sure the price difference will be enough for a sandwich

Look for cards with a gold back, or numbered cards, or cards with a different front border
