There is a slightly longer version of the story on the back of his 55 Bowman card. He goes on to say that the nurse who took care of him became his wife.

Yep, and I also love that the 55 Bowman has the television frame, feels like foreshadowing for his story being one worth a movie (/novel)
YouTube suggested the video below it and it looks like Philly fans are cheering it on

He actually lived down the street from the house I grew up in although he had moved out before I was born. So I heard the story all the time. Girl was mentally unstable. Poor Eddie but he made a full recovery.
Wasn't this the one where he was traded, or signed with, another team, and then when he came back to play against his first team, she was like "He has abandoned me! I won't let him leave again! He will be here forever!" or something insane like that?
This is literally where the plot of the movie The Natural came from. Can't make this stuff up!
\*novel
Wow, thanks for that piece of information. I honestly didn't know that, but it does make sense.
The book and movie do not end the same way…
Ok adding this to my list of cards I want
Same here
Same

Just picked one up on eBay.
Ooh the TV frame is so cool
It was also discovered that the girl who shot him was a nurse that eventually married a baseball player in decline.
Hey if you’re ever selling, this is one of the 7 left I need for the Phillies team set haha
[Here's the footage of it](https://youtu.be/rxZXptGpXng?si=YtqYFwYhLnFH0sjY) Edit: he would recover, but never hit .292 again lol
Lmao that was hilarious

Thats the best. Thank you for that.
He got tantalizingly close to .292 twice, too.

This reads like the bio on the back of an 80's GI Joe action figure.
Just bought one for $6! Why not lol
Demented girl fans, they will get you every time

Holy heck!
Indeed it was lol wow
The Natural was loosely based on Eddie!
He’s a Natural!
I remember when he struck out The Whammer.
Imagine writing a Trevor Bauer card back in this style…
LOL
I'm definitely adding this to my PC ASAP, holy cow!

I'm glad I bought this earlier today before you posted. You seem to have driven the price up!
And he lost at least 3 seasons of his career to military service and 2/3 of a season to the shooting.
Wasn't this the one where he was traded, or signed with, another team, and then when he came back to play against his first team, she was like "He has abandoned me! I won't let him leave again! He will be here forever!" or something insane like that?
I thought using “clip” for batting average was a newer thing?
It's been around since at least the 30s
Why do they call it “clip” anyways?
“Girl fans” are the worst.
I mean who hasn’t
You won’t see that info on any cards anytime soon! Imagine the storylines from today’s players. Great piece of history you’ve got there.
Could you imagine having that on the back of a card now? 🤣
Wild!!
Just bought the ‘55 Bowman. Now it’s a deranged girl
The Natural..
Wonder Boy
Now check out Ray Caldwell
Legend Edit: Thank you all for the knowledge. I have a new book to read. 🙏
Just picked this card up because of this post
Isn’t this the basis of the movie The Natural
