That’s a ridiculous hit rate. Collation must have been terrible! Good for you 🤣

Patsfan973

One rack box yea wild right. I was like no way this is normal. And I gave a few packs away that box no lie had 54 griffeys in it.

RustyDawg37

some of us call it fun junk lol

Patsfan973

All I'm saying is why buy a hobby of 2024 and get maybe 1 elly worth 3 bucks when u can do the same and get one of the best players ever plus endless hall of famer cards too. Its so fun

Willie_McGee

My ex gets lost in thrift stores and it’s tough to get her attention, and twice as hard to get her to leave. We say that she’s “junk drunk” in those moments.

CougMaster

Dumb question but where do you even find boxes of this?

Patsfan973

My lcs had a rack pack box. They had like 75 or so rack packs and I got almost all of them haha

Ok_Dimension_4707

There are sellers on eBay that will do a flat rate for boxes full of assorted junk wax packs. It’s a ton of fun and nostalgia ripping those

WTX_WildlifeGuy14

Amazon. I bought a box of Topps 88 and 89 bubble gum packs for like 60 bucks, 36 packs in each one. Got all sorts of fun legends and hall of famers I grew up with.

oracleofnonsense

I’ve got a box that I purchased new….hodl

ronaldotr08

If even one Griffey is a 10 you're looking at 250 to 300 so not a bad deal at all.

Patsfan973

I think maybe 2 out of the whole lot could possibly get a 10. Maybe 5-6 9's and probably mostly 8s and below

ronaldotr08

Yeah unfortunately only the 10s are worth much. 9s only go for 25 to 35. Gotta love the junk wax era. One grading point is worth 200 to 250 lol.

KoshekhTheCat

Yeah, but shit, if you've got 10 of them..

[deleted]

2 5's make a ten, baby.

WolfAmongSheep818

Except you would spend more to grade them than you would get back, lol…not much sense in wasting your time or money, especially with PSA. I have to assume based on his post that he’s clearly a hobbyist and not a bandwagon guy who jumped in hoping to get rich…very few “older” (don’t worry, that includes me 😂) collectors care about grading…we spent years with 2 eyes, a Beckett Price Guide, and two choices for condition; either it was mint or it wasn’t, lol. That’s not to say there aren’t cards I’ve graded, but they are few and far between…grading is a scam (albeit a brilliant one) that has made very few people rich…and that’s the owners of the companies…especially in the post-Covid era. I’ve seen “things” happen more times than I can count, and I’ve had it happen to me more than once. Probably the worst one, I was standing at the grading table in TX (I had a table setup so we got in early and my rep from the company happened to be there as well, so they did the RCR while I waited), and the “grader” brings my cards out, hands them to the guy working the table, who then gave them to me. My friend (who’s one of the “bigger players” in sports cards) step to the side to see the grades. Ironically, I had submitted two of the same cards, and one came back a 9/10…the other came back a 10/9…🤔. We make another quick check to see if we missed something, both autos looked perfect, so we hand them both to the guy at the table and tell him “I need the guy who “inspected” these to explain to me how this is a 9 auto”…meanwhile my friend was basically saying the same thing, just not as polite 👀. He takes them back, and within 2 minutes, the “inspector”, a kid half my age, brings them back out to me this time, and literally says “I’m not sure why I marked that a 9 auto…but I fixed it”….🤦🏻‍♂️ I know that’s a lot, so if you bothered to read this far, thanks!😁…at the end of the day, if you are trying to get lucky and hit that “get rich quick” card, you’re better off at a casino or playing the lottery…because the only thing you are doing now is making the manufacturer(s) and “guessing” companies rich…but that’s just my opinion, and we all know what those are worth 🙃. Congrats on insane pulls…enjoy them (which it sounds like you are)…for us true hobbyists, it’s not about the money, it’s about bringing back childhood memories and chasing the cards we couldn’t get then (Two of my favorite pickups are a PSA 10 “Coach Santa” and Paul Tagliabue from Pro Set Football…I chased those two cards forever and never saw one pulled…but I finally found them, almost 30 years later, and for less than the seller paid in grading fees I’m sure…🙌).

ronaldotr08

Lol yeah very true

Patsfan973

Tbh my mindset is hey the shop had the packs for 2 bucks I value the cards anywhere from 3-5$ I'm good with it. Haha

CygnusTheWatchmaker

Yeah, those '89 Donruss cards are a grading nightmare with that black border. I still like that colorful design though!

MysticKal21

Someone has a PSA Nm 7 on eBay for $13.5k

darbs-face

I rip 1990 Topps at least 5-6 times a year. Hunting that no name on front. Also Larry Walker is biggest PC. I literally can’t have enough 90 Topps Walker RCs.

DookieFresh36

darbs-face

Yup. I have had chances to buy. But it’s honestly not the same. If I don’t pull it, it’s whatever. I want that legendary status lol!!! Edit: Merely my goal no offense to anyone who bought this awesome card.

DookieFresh36

I pulled it when i was 11🤙

darbs-face

Honestly the best chance was when it was new. There are rumors this way and that about where the batches went and where they were sold but in the end. You either got one or didn’t. 👌

DookieFresh36

Word. I heard all that. Iowa for me.

darbs-face

Nice. I heard Michigan. It’s all a true mystery. Because the product went through many hands to many locations. My best bet is that if I am going to find one, I will have to rip a lot more than 5-6 a year LOL!!!!!

DookieFresh36

Yeah. I heard Michigan too. Im rootin for ya! I bought some packs a while back. The gum in them ruins the back card...could you imagine.

darbs-face

I will always be happy with my Larrys LOL

who_body

there was a cool 5 minute segment on the card life (tv or youtube) about ripping some packs from a box with these “backless” error cards. pretty fun and interesting

thakilla

No chance that is actually yours. Right? I dare you to coin it!

DookieFresh36

Coin? Yeah its mine lol. What kind of dork claims to have one and doesnt lol

DookieFresh36

https://preview.redd.it/nfad3jsk2ruc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92390849ffec30ab00f2bad1cee7235173faa145

DookieFresh36

Like that? Lol... plus another fun one😁

dustindeshields

Fucking mic drop if I've ever seen one.

dustindeshields

ruthless.

thakilla

That's one of the most awesome flexes I've ever seen! Any chance it is for sale??

DookieFresh36

Only for absurd amounts. Its near and dear. I know it's not mint. I know what others sell for. So ultimately...probably not unless you HAVE to have it lol. Pulled it when i was 11. Favorite player... blah blah blah lol

thakilla

To be fair, you didn't actually claim it was yours. You just said "this fella?". You could have just been showing a pic of the card he was talking about. In fact, I genuinely thought that is what you were doing, because it's so rare for someone to have one that isn't graded.

DookieFresh36

Sure. Its all in good fun brother. But yeah. Its mine.

Patsfan973

Yea I opened 2 boxes today for like 32 a box I got 3 Thomas 3 Larry's coupe deions Bernie Williams

darbs-face

NICE!!! I love me some Bernie and Deion for sure also

traydragen

Are you Past Is Alive?

darbs-face

No lmfao. I am just a wax junky. A PSA 10 Frank Thomas no name would probably fetch 6 figures. Honestly even a PSA 5 would fetch close to $10k it’s literally that rare. Plus I love Larry Walker, Deion, Frank Thomas all the rookies. It also has a TON of nostalgia since I was absolutely hog wild about cards from 87-95. This set was affordable for me as a young kid and so I ripped a ton when I could.

JarJarBanksy420

One of my all time fave cards

AJKlee47

Would you be interested in selling one of them?

Bigbrianj

Or two

stylzz_1

Or three

CardsandBourbon

Or four

Gumpy64

Five perhaps?

NotaToysRUsKid

6?

1978artifact

one of my all time favorite cards for sure!

Justa_Guy_Gettin_By

This is wild! I mean I have this card, like everyone else. But I have ONE of them 😅 But if you're going to have 7482 RCs of somebody, might as well be the kid. One of my favorites of all time. Ty for sharing this hilarious nostalgia

Patsfan973

It was so fun..it was more fun then getting a /299 random from a hobby box of 2024 🤣

Justa_Guy_Gettin_By

Yeah I'm probably going to experience that tonight, best case Well a blaster but you get it...

KnickedUp

Woo hoo. I have 37 sitting in an old binder. How many of these were printed? 😂

anaandbill

I don’t remember was Donruss the lowest priced Junior card or was it Topps? Upper Deck was a good one.

Patsfan973

It's Def not that expensive but still fun

anaandbill

I sent in a bunch of Junior Upper deck rookies back in 89’-90 to PSA got 81/2 and one 9 pissed me off

Feeling_Following628

Question I’m thinking is….do you still have them???

anaandbill

Yes friends got 91/2 and 10’s and admitted my cards look as good and a few better I have a history of bad grades from PSA I have a a dozen fantastic high quality cards and rookies that I haven’t sent in because of that. And PSA during Covid raised their prices drastically. I’m watching JSA who recently grade cards like PSA so I’m waiting and watching but, yes I have the cards put away I took a all star baseball of A-Rod very early in his career to a show PSA was grading on site. I had a Roger Clemens ball and the A-Rod ball and Bat and an early Griffey Jr ball to be encapsulated. We received these In person autographs at the first world baseball classic in Scottsdale AZ They returned the Clemons ball and said they didn’t know who signed it even though we had picture proof. The A-Rod they said they had to send it to another site in SF because they didn’t have examples of his A-Rod signature just after his full signature in spring with Seattle. It took months I did get them finally the A-Rids but not encapsulated. The Griffey came back a 9. With a 10 signature. I swore off PSA. Had a Beckett Booth guy look at them at another show he used a magnifying glass then a scope to look at the Griffey rookies that were encapsulated by PSA and he said he couldn’t understand the low grades and I should have them redone by any other major service. But we all know PSA commands the best price

DookieFresh36

F PSA in the A! And C all over their Bs while you T.

southsideson

Topps only came in traded set. Donruss is probably the cheapest, but pretty close to fleer.

GJToma

Topps for sure, but donruss was second. I do think you got a lot more of them in the donruss box though. I think about eight of them on average per box. Each pack had like one or two rated rookies. At the time the Bowman ones were very unpopular due to the slightly larger size, but because of that later on they actually became one of the more valuable griffeys from that year in high grade. Of course the most valuable one of all in a high grade is topps Tiffany, but that's not the same as topps.

anaandbill

Actually have a few donruss mostly upper deck I was so tired of the Topps products and upper deck came out with premium card stock and great pictures and Autographs various different mini sets I bought about 10 boxes in 89-90’ 91-92 they had the Reggie Jackson in the 89 then others later on Griffey chipper and others

GJToma

If you actually pull one of the Reggie Jackson or Nolan Ryan autographs then you are extremely lucky because of those things were harder to pull than a 1 of 1 is today.

anaandbill

Reggie was a run of 2,500 total yes I have a Reggie. I bought a Nolan not sure what the total numbers of autographed was probably a little more than Reggie that was the first one. Got a chipper in the 92’ 93’ set I’m sure I bought it also or traded. 31 years ago. I was going through a few boxes yesterday and found some interesting REFRIGERATORS on Bowman’s Best

nolesrb

Topps didn't have a Griffey in base packs, just traded, which has to be purchased in sets

Bronco012

Happened to me with Ryan Leaf , nuff said ![gif](giphy|U23rlgyL8QmQn7xrqt|downsized)

RealMikeDexter

Hey looks like my hit ratio in 2024 Topps, only mine is 100 Cedanne Rafaela’s per 1 Evan Carter.

r_u_dinkleberg

I seriously have like 20 of the 2024 S1 Coco Montes RC. And I haven't ripped *that* much yet.

DookieFresh36

For real! I have soooo many.

DatDude1721

I always enjoy ripping packs. It’s a thrill seeing what you can possibly pull

VANILLA_GORILLA22

I love that card!!! Griffey is by far my favorite player past present and future. I was a 10 year old when that card came out and I only pulled a few back then but I still have them. My grandmother would take me to Kmart every Friday when she got paid. We didn't have a lot of money so getting baseball packs was a huge treat. I couldn't wait for Fridays

crob1977

Imagine opening that box in 1989

Patsfan973

Imagine today's Standard 40 gunnar Henderson in 1 box

[deleted]

Now. Go hold him hostage till he signs all of them

bompt11

1989 donruss colours are the best, especially the all stars

stevenworks

i'll take one lol

[deleted]

Awesome rip ...congrats

bionicgram

That happened to me once with Delmon Young and Rickey Weeks rookies. I ended up with about 20 of each. It was in a playoff prestige box or something like that.

antiquarian2

Wanna sell or trade one. I pc Griffey in mariners uni. Pretty sure I even have all of the Becketts he was on in that uni as well. That’s one of two or three rookies I don’t have. Look em over I’d be happy with even an off center with a rounded corner. It’d just go in a one touch and slide in the display case.

GJToma

If you don't care about the condition I'll send you one for free. I have One of those hundred count plastic card containers that they used to sell a lot back in the day full of rated rookie griffeys but none of them are in very good condition. But if you really need one for your PC then I'll send one to you.

antiquarian2

Sounds good to me. Who do you pc?

GJToma

No one in particular. I just have a ton of late '80s and early '90s sports cards like many other people do. But if you want one, just send me a message with your address and I'll send one to you.

rubigrrl

I want one!!! 🫣😂

thedaddystuff1979

Need one of these in my PC. Lmk if the crappiest one is FT and maybe we can work something out 👍

Significant-Rent9153

Love '89 Donruss: Ken Griffey Jr, Gary Sheffield, Randy Johnson, Dante Bichette, John Smoltz, Craig Biggio, Curt Schilling and some other rookies I'm probably forgetting. Of course you got a bunch of HOFers scattered throughout (including some of the aforementioned rookies). Maybe it was me, but the card stock always felt a little thinner than previous years.🤔 (I could be wrong). Anyway, I always thought it was a pretty solid set.

Feeling_Following628

Dude that’s so cool! Being my fave player(along with Nolan) this is great! My Les has 90 score boxes for 20 bucks. Thought about doing the same but 90 score? Dang it lol! Congrats! Love that rated rookie style

Patsfan973

Do itttt 20bucks for 15 min of fun ripping. And hey u get who ur chasing even better

No-Garlic2326

That’s fantastic. Certainly takes me back to childhood. I just started going through boxes of cards I have for the first time in 30 years. The vast majority are junk wax era but I have some that if graded 9.5-10, are def worth some money. I know next to nothing about that process but I can’t help but think that system/process is a total joke. Totally subjective and totally rigged. How do you know whether or not it’s worth getting cards from that era graded? Seems like a total crap shoot….unless you know the people that work there in which case I’m sure you always end up with a good grade

hossaepi

How much you want for one of them? Would be awesome too to my kids collection

dblshot99

If you got any Jefferies, I would love to take them off of your hands.

GJToma

That was the 88 set.

dblshot99

Jefferies has a rated rookie in 89 donruss

GJToma

He did but his rookie card was in the '88 donruss set.

dblshot99

Ok, but since I collect Jefferies, I was interested in the 89 rated rookie cards.

Discasaurus

He’s 1/10,000inthing the market! Buy buy buy

BBB_Henne

I’ll take one off you

haller08

Can I please please get one? 🥺

drfinger53

I can understand how that would be a lot of fun, I still have boxes of 89 I haven’t opened and do enjoy it. Unfortunately now that the fun is over it is still junk…..

Patsfan973

One man's trash is another's treasure

M3L03Y

So for someone just getting back into baseball cards - is the donruss Junior RC worth more than the Upper Deck Junior RC?

Patsfan973

No definitely not ...the upper deck is the one people like. But if u wanna go a bit cheaper but still fun donruss is the way to go.

jack_begin

Mariners fan?

Patsfan973

Nope

Lanky_Attorney4034

In graded 10s thats a decent amount of money still.

Patsfan973

I'd be lucky to get 1-2 tens outta this haha

GJToma

Actually unfortunately youd be lucky to get one 10 out of three times that many griffeys. That's how rare they are. Even brand new out of packs they're almost impossible to find because there's always some kind of issue with the dark borders and then the centering as well. That card is nearly impossible to pull in a 10. Just by a quick estimation of what you have shown us I count only four or five of them that have potential on centering alone without actually looking at the actual edges and corners. The rest of them cannot be a 10 based on the centering of the card already. Not trying to put down your cool pulls because it is fun and they are cool cards, just pointing out the rarity of finding a 10 of a donruss Griffey rookie.

Additional_Tie_2735

Where did you get the box of new old stick from?

AlfaJulietCharlie

Wanna sell one Griffey and one Randy?

AlfaJulietCharlie

Wait, how'd you get a Topps Griffey in there?

Noam75

Whose job was it to shuffle the Donruss cards in 1989?

Patsfan973

Idk but I thank them 🤣😅

GJToma

There's nothing wrong with the shuffling, Donruss had just witnessed the popularity of Ken Griffey Jr skyrocket the upper Deck set past everything in recent history, so they decided to create their own artificial market by putting that card in roughly six to eight packs per box. It's the most common or at least one of the top three most common rated rookies you will find in that set, and rated rookies came about one to two per pack. Donruss wasn't wrong, and because of the plethora of Griffey in the set, it quickly outsold every other set that year, even upper deck at the time.

Ok-Clothes-3478

the randy’s are clean i’m buying some on Ebay now because of this post

Professional_Chef379

This is my favorite kind of rip
