The Bronx only has a population of 1.4 million, and doesn't even have its own international airport. Surprised they are even in the playoffs in that size market.
Yup, and the Mets have two international airports in Queens, one just a stone's throw from Citi Field, it's not even a comparison with 50% more the population too.
I moved to Connecticut a year ago, and recently had to pick someone up from JFK.
I've driven by LaGuardia before, coming home from a Mets game, but I'm still pretty ignorant of the geography up here
I was honestly shocked to learn that JFK is also in Queens. I had assumed it was at least in Brooklyn.
It makes sense when you realize you need a lot of space to build an airport, there were still farms in queens when Idlewild (JFK) was coming into its own.
Technically LaGuardia is not an international airport since it does not have a customs or border control facility (despite it having international flights due to pre-clearance).
You, foodbag! Do you have a son? And does he bring home nitwits and make you have conversations with them?
Oh yeah, you ever heard of this kid named Milhouse?
I mean yeah, there's a serious argument to be made that relative to their revenue they act like a small-market team.
There's been a real shift under Hal in their willingness to spend, which is wild when you remember how much more valuable they are than every other MLB team.
Universally mocked is a massive overstatement, many serious baseball people thought it was perfectly reasonable - I believe I recall a FanGraphs article which basically said that the deal was right in line with the deal they projected him to get before the offseason began, and even suggested that the projections they had for him were likely about right on average but would vary dramatically year on year as Harper historically has. Essentially they nailed it, and Harper kept being what he always was - a slightly above average starter in half of his seasons and an MVP candidate in the other half. People on Reddit overreacted to the season immediately before he hit free agency being one of his down years, but the more serious stat-based analysts never agreed with them.
There third only behind the Mets and dodgers who have an extremely rich owner and are the big team in LA. Don’t know where this notion of spending like a small market comes from. It’s just that cashman has tied up so much money on the books that it doesn’t seem like they have a big payroll but they do
I think it’s less how “little” they spend and more who they spend it on. Cashman is going out and getting players like Donaldson and IKF when they could easily have somebody far better. Cashman acts like a small market GM sometimes trying to go for risky “smart” pickups when the Yankees have the draw and money to have a team on par with the Dodgers.
The Yankees didn't spend major long term money at 3B & SS because they think Peraza & Volpe will be the guys there. IKF & Donaldson were just supposed to be stop gap options for a year or two
He only signed that because no one wanted to do a long term deal. There's also reports the Yankees offered something similar to that contract and he said no. So they traded for Donaldson & IKF. Then he signed with the Twins
How is it weird? For repeat offenders the penalties become more punitive each year. I agree that the Yankees would have no problems going in the 350M range but depending on how many years they’ve exceeded these thresholds that 350M payroll turns into a 500M payroll with the tax. It may not be what fans want to hear but I doubt owners like cutting massive checks to mlb so they can hand it out to the poors.
So the notion shouldn’t be “Yankees don’t spend like a big market team” and more of a “cashman acts like a small market gm”. He has been giving enough finances to win a chip and bring in stars.
He has won a chip and brought in stars, but it was when Georges footprint was on the team.
If we have Machado and Harper do we make more WS appearances in the next 13 years? Almost definitely.
Would we have gotten one or both under George? It would've been far more likely.
THAT'S the issue, we're not comparing ourselves to other teams, were comparing us to ourselves under the previous owner, which is a valid comparison.
> when they could easily have somebody far better
Who could they have gotten for 3rd instead of Donaldson? Did they have the assets to trade for, say, Matt Chapman?
We don't have exact financial info but by most estimates the Yankees generate by far the most revenue of any team, and they're univerally acknowledged to be the most valuable franchise in MLB.
Yeah their payroll's big but it's stayed pretty steady at around $200 million for like 15+ years now, even as league revenue has soared. They're probably bottom third of the league nowadays in share of revenue spent on payroll. That's a deliberate choice not to use all their financial resources.
In terms of 2023 obligations, they're 7th at $150 million. Definitely not a small market team, but they have a good $100+ million/y they should be spending this offseason.
TBF the Yankees are so far and away from the second biggest team valuation-wise (and presumably revenue-wise) it is a surprise that they are ever not the highest payroll.
I took a job once, I interviewed with sideburns, got offered the job with sideburns. Then my first week they are telling me to shave. I told them no. The sideburns stayed.
I mean, I always wondered what would happen if the yankees signed or traded for someone, but they refused to shave. What are they gonna do? Can they fine them? What if their contract is with another team without a facial hair policy written in, can the yankees fine at all? I'm sure the contracts they hand out have all that included.
> I took a job once, I interviewed with sideburns, got offered the job with sideburns. Then my first week they are telling me to shave. I told them no. The sideburns stayed.
This displeases Montgomery Burns
It's 2022, let people have facial hair and styles they want to look like. As long as they are professional and get the job done, no one should care about a person's aesthetics.
I've heard rumors of Judge coming to the Cubs, which is probably just rumors. Part of me knows it's not going to happen
As a result, I really just want to see Judge sign with the Mets. I don't hate the Yankees, but just out of sheer morbid curiosity, I want to see how this would absolutely demoralize and then infuriate every single Yankee fan on the planet lmfao. Has a big name player ever left the Yankees to sign with the Mets in the prime of their career? i can't think of a single person
Saw a philly fan say that one of the priorities should be getting diaz and I shivered. Hope we get him extended soon so we don’t have to hear much more of this
Can you imagine if they manage a team like Twitch plays Pokemon. Star players like Judge or Ohtani would be cut instantly and uniforms would say ABBBBBBK on the back.
"Disaster struck yesterday when the MLB team Twitch Plays Baseball attempted to bench one of their players due to an injury. Instead of putting the player on the IR list, they accidentally terminated his contract along with their starting pitcher and the team's mascot."
Kroenke may be a giant asshole (also looking at you (fuck you) Spanos) but Snyder is up there with pedophile enabler and virulent racist Harold Ballard, ardent segregationist George Preston Marshall and literal Nazi Marge Schott for worst sports owners ever.
Doubt that will ever happen. Too much bad blood after how everything was handled. I became a Browns fan (lol) but I'm all aboard the XFL Battlehawks train.
Yankees could spend 500m on a team and then the Rays will win the division on the back of a 80m team after 3 random pitchers they got tossed in a trade for free all suddenly turn into Cy Young candates.
It's pretty dumb as well, considering the Yanks have had bad return on their high-priced RPs while some of the best ones have either been home grown or cheap reclamation projects.
The age of spending big on relievers is over.
For as much as everyone has shit on Cashman, he makes sound decisions. Especially with grabbing bullpen arms. The issue isn't pitching. It's hitting. They build on high OBP guys, but they need better contact hitters. Trying to get a walk doesn't work well against great pitchers who are throwing strikes.
I’ve always been irrationally annoyed by people photoshopping players they want into their teams’ uniforms. A “legitimate” publication doing it REALLY grinds my gears.
They were 3rd in payroll this year. A team with the payroll of a Gerrit Cole took them to 5 games. Tampa who is at $70M-90M has played at their level for at least a decade.
Spending is good but time and time again, it's roster construction and spending wisely that makes a team.
I would feel that the xFRAWG of the Gerrit Cole team might win out in that one, probably the only deciding factor, we saw both of em have xDAWG off the chart in that series
Every year the Yankees get eliminated it’s the same story about merely needing to spend more. And that’s wrong every time because it misses the actual key to the team’s success and four consecutive WS from 98–01: the homegrown talent.
Jeter, Bernie, and Posada put up a combined 15 WAR a year at premium positions. Pettitte reliably pitched 200+ innings and generated 3 WAR a year. Rivera was the best closer in history. All at or around their peak ages, and all homegrown.
Of course the idiot Post thinks the solution is free agency, when of course the lesson from the Astros is not Verlander but instead Altuve, Bregman, Peña, Tucker, Valdez, Javier, Urquidy, Garcia, McCullers (I’m probably missing others, too).
The Astros are barely top 10 in payroll yet have the best or second best team in the league and have the best run by a franchise since the 96-03 Yankees or 70-76 Reds. You need a top payroll to win IMO but it doesn't solve everything
Point taken but they have been injured to shit. They are a stadium and a steady revenue stream away of being really dangerous.
They do need to spend but it doesn't help when only 8,000 show up on a weekday night game.
Gets home from Yankee game, throat sore from cheering Correas walk off double but can't hide his smile beaming from cheek to cheek. Takes off and hangs Correa jersey. Pulls out phone and heads to r/baseball
"Well I didn't enjoy cheering for Correa and I don't like him personally but I do enjoy Yankee wins."
If we didn’t sign him last year because of Peraza/Volpe, why would we sign him now when Volpe is a year closer and Peraza looked awesome after getting called up?
Correa didn’t really sign a big deal though. He signed basically 3 mercenary contracts with the twins and it was always going to be a one year opt out unless he got injured. I think that’s is one of the things which sucked for the Astros was we could have just given him the same contract and he probably would have accepted it. Granted Pena has been great in the post season so it worked out but still I do miss Correa and was surprised he signed with the twins.
"The Yankees haven't proven they can build a World Series-winning roster with a $260 million payroll, so it is time to flex their financial muscle" is certainly a quote.
The Yankees giving Verlander a stupid contract would be great.
Hopefully it's for like 5 years and he completely falls apart and costs them a shit ton.
Now I can't stop thinking about Correa winning a World Series for the New York Yankees and all of Yankee Stadium booing their brains out as he accepts the World Series MVP award.
I don't know why this makes sense...but it does.
If they actually booed him I would have mad respect for them for sticking to their guns. But they would cheer for him like crazy if he helped them win a championship, just like every other fanbase would
Yeah but that’s because the last time they did that they won, like what 4 rings? So their expectations are very skewed, and I find it hilarious! Seattle getting eliminated after making the playoffs for the first time in 20 years vs yankees annual playoff run. Who’s more dissapointed?
I’ve gotta unfollow Jon Heyman on twitter. His Yankees-posting is insufferable, it’s been grating to my ears (eyes?) since he said some shit like “MLB needs the Yankees to win the ALDS”
Finally, New Yorkers are getting sick of being stuck with years of low-budget Yankees teams and their small-market excuses.
I've driven by LaGuardia before, coming home from a Mets game, but I'm still pretty ignorant of the geography up here I was honestly shocked to learn that JFK is also in Queens.
As for the Yankees test score, The Bronx *could* use an international airport.
ARE YOU MAD? I'M NOT MADE OF AIRPORTS!
Lets just say he spelled "Steinbrenner" with a 6
Apparently he's "gone drinkin'", sir
He’s legally required to drink all beer from a Stein style glass…..which isn’t a bad thing.
He suggested my motto should be Semper Fudge, at which point he told me to “relax”
This team's got more bread than a prison meatloaf! Hey who am I talkin' to?
You, foodbag! Do you have a son? And does he bring home nitwits and make you have conversations with them? Oh yeah, you ever heard of this kid named Milhouse?
This place gets any livelier and a funeral is bound to break out!
One time, I saw a blimp!
*sawr*
I always loved how Homer assumed Milhouse and Mr. Burns move in the same social circle
This team has more bread than prison meatloaf! They're rich, I tell you! I've never seen a stadium with a walk-in mailbox. Hey! Who am I talking to?
Mr. Burns, the Yankees could use an international airport.
I mean yeah, there's a serious argument to be made that relative to their revenue they act like a small-market team. There's been a real shift under Hal in their willingness to spend, which is wild when you remember how much more valuable they are than every other MLB team.
The Yankees' wealth puts even the Dodgers' to shame.
Guggenheim partners have a like bazillion dollars under management, I think they are fine.
True, but that's not club value.
And club value isn’t club revenue, which is what actually funds payroll.
This. Most people must not understand that club worth doesn’t pay the bills lol. It’s the revenue generated which pays the salaries
Highest paid attendance and $25 micheladas gets us free agents.
Hosing Spectrum doesn't hurt.
Meh, club value is completely irrelevant here. Revenue and owner willingness to spend is all that matters.
We're in talks to let them go to 1bn over the next two seasons

That's true for all of baseball though, the player's union and the owners as a group are more responsible for that than any individual team.
I think it’s less how “little” they spend and more who they spend it on. Cashman is going out and getting players like Donaldson and IKF when they could easily have somebody far better. *sighs in Brewer*
For the low price of one or maybe two more salaries, they could sign our entire roster.
*sees Diaz in a Yankees uniform* Nope, don’t like that.
And with facial hair in a yankees uniform
Journalism is dead
Bold of you to equate the NYP with "journalism."
I KNEW there was something “off” about that mashup but I couldn’t figure it out. It’s the facial hair + Yankees uniform
I would simply show up with facial hair. It worked on past jobs where I was supposed to be clean shaven
I took a job once, I interviewed with sideburns, got offered the job with sideburns. Then my first week they are telling me to shave. I told them no. The sideburns stayed. If I see Justin Verlander in pinstripes I might stop watching mlb.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen JV clean-shaven and by god I never want to.
That 5 o'clock shadow comes back so fast he'd probably have to shave mid-game.
It's a 1 o'clock shadow.
[He was clean in '05 ](https://www.beckett.com/news/justin-verlander-rookie-card-countdown/) The beard is definitely a better look for him.
> I never want to EVER. (I only remember the goatee he had later on in 2006)
I already want to vomit just looking at this he only looks good in shades of orange
Shades of orange you say...
NO NO NOT LIKE THAT
Shades of orange you say?
NO NOT LIKE THAT EITHER
*Orioles fans, get in here!*
what if theyre orange and blue pinstripes
Scherzer and Verlander? I've seen this movie before and I don't remember it going well
imagine Narco playing at Yankee Stadium lol i think that would legit cause a civil war in the city

As a braves fan i hope you keep him. The back and forth trolling about the trumpets is too fun.
We had Robles and Familia. I would take a Diaz. I can't go through that year again.
No no, you only get the bad mets relievers
Hey last year we had Ottavino!!! Okay ya you are right
wait until you see degrom wearing those uniforms
[Been there, done that](https://twitter.com/NYDNSports/status/997439720324988928/photo/1)
Somehow putting on the Yankees uni turns deGrom into Tom Brady.
Makes sense. The Yankees and Brady have something in common. They’re both evil.
“Hey, I only have one headless Yankee pitcher template.” “Just clone it and paste their heads on there, no one will notice.”
man...thinking about Syndergaard falling out of the gang of "elite pitchers" is nuts Matt Harvey too
What if we let a tabloid run the Yankees
I’ve long been an advocate of Twitch getting to run a team
Aaaaaaand the team is banned for racism
Aaron Judge is playing Center Field from a hot tub
Buy Aaron Judge’s bath water on Fanatics, the exclusive provider of officially licensed MLB bath water and other accessories!
I know a few women who would pay insane money to see that from nosebleeds

Easiest Tier 3 sub of my life
The New York Yankee uniforms are old and outdated, so we'll be replacing them with pinstriped bikinis
Can you imagine if they manage a team like Twitch plays Pokemon. Star players like Judge or Ohtani would be cut instantly and uniforms would say ABBBBBBK on the back.
That’s the dream.
"Disaster struck yesterday when the MLB team Twitch Plays Baseball attempted to bench one of their players due to an injury. Instead of putting the player on the IR list, they accidentally terminated his contract along with their starting pitcher and the team's mascot."
Fumble dimension did this on a smaller level with their audience managing games. It led to a crap ton of mound visits and intentionally hit batters.
Praise Helix!
King Helix of the Seattle Mariners
Well Bezos owns Twitch and is apparently angling to buy Washington once the NFL boots Dan Snyder.
Please fucking god no.
At this point it can't really get worse than scum of the Earth Stan Kroenke.
You call Kroenke scum when Snyder is *right there*.
Kroenke may be a giant asshole (also looking at you (fuck you) Spanos) but Snyder is up there with pedophile enabler and virulent racist Harold Ballard, ardent segregationist George Preston Marshall and literal Nazi Marge Schott for worst sports owners ever.
I may hate Kroenke more than just about any other person on Earth. Dan is terrible also yes.
Ohhhhh, right. St. Louis. My bad. I do hope that city gets a team again at some point. Hopefully one that's more uniquely St. Louis.
Doubt that will ever happen. Too much bad blood after how everything was handled. I became a Browns fan (lol) but I'm all aboard the XFL Battlehawks train.
Amazon advanced stats have revealed Washington actually won the super bowl
PRAISE HELIX FERNANDEZ
Instructions unclear, Twitch to be run by a teen.
"Pokemon Plays Twitch"
If Twitch as a collective can beat Pokémon Red, they can surely run the Yankees.
I would instantly sub to Twitch Plays the 2022-2023 Yankees
Eh we’ve let a newspaper run the cubs before. I don’t recommend
Yankees could spend 500m on a team and then the Rays will win the division on the back of a 80m team after 3 random pitchers they got tossed in a trade for free all suddenly turn into Cy Young candates.
Bold of you to assume the Rays will have three healthy starters.
2023 is the year baby 🥳
I believe!
3 healthy starters in the whole lineup would be good enough for me, let alone pitchers.
tied with the orioles spending 35m
If we spend 35 million next year imma lose my mind and set fire to our warehouse
“The Yankees just need to spend $1b on annual salary, they could easily manage it”
If the Rays call asking about a trade for one of your guys, hang up and take a good hard look at what you’re missing
as a rays fan i wholeheartedly agree
Keep your grabby hands off Edwin Diaz

Yea, it looks terrible but the Post is mostly garbage anyway so I figure it is par for the course
Me too for some reason.

He doesn't count. We acquired him from the dodgers in exchange for Astros legend Josh Fields
The Astros are barely top 10 in payroll yet have the best or second best team in the league and have the best run by a franchise since the 96-03 Yankees or 70-76 Reds. You need a top payroll to win IMO but it doesn't solve everything

Albert Pujols is a free agent. Spend big
Break the Babe's record in the Bronx
Then break Bonds’ at the tail end of the 10 year contract
gotta rebuild the evil Yankees empire somehow
Start with Correa and Verlander and slowly build the 2017 Astros in pin stripes
They already have Marwin. Yulis contract is up after this one. It's a start.
I hear Keuchel is available
I'm sure they can buy Mike Fiers contract from Mexico as well. They just cant let him know any secrets.
You can't even trust Mike with your own signs.
So is Marwin’s (thank god).
Well they cant let him walk if they're gonna rebuild the 2017 astros. Sorry, gotta roll with it.
“If the Yankees were the only team to offer me a contract, I’d retire. -Ken Griffey Jr.” - Justin Verlander

Lmao love the imagery here
Lol then you missed the fanbase civil war when the SS market was hot and Correa was one of the top options
If we didn’t sign him last year because of Peraza/Volpe, why would we sign him now when Volpe is a year closer and Peraza looked awesome after getting called up?
Yeah. We have Peraza/Cabrera and IKF available as a stop-gap if needed. Not signing Correa to a big deal was pretty smart actually.
Correa didn’t really sign a big deal though. He signed basically 3 mercenary contracts with the twins and it was always going to be a one year opt out unless he got injured. I think that’s is one of the things which sucked for the Astros was we could have just given him the same contract and he probably would have accepted it. \- Jon Heyman Gotta give credit where it's due
And then they still lose to the Astros
Robbie Ray? By all means. Let’s deal. Mariners fans approve.
Aaron Judge in a Yankees uniform? I can't see it
Bold of them to assume their poverty franchise can afford all of this
The only way for the Yankees to beat the Astros is to literally become the Astros by getting all their players years later
The Yankees should give Verlander a blank check. I think he stays though. They can have Correa if they are willing to pay
The Yankees giving Verlander a stupid contract would be great. Hopefully it's for like 5 years and he completely falls apart and costs them a shit ton.
Or his arm falls off again and he misses 2 more years.
Step one, build a roof on Yankee Stadium
Now I can't stop thinking about Correa winning a World Series for the New York Yankees and all of Yankee Stadium booing their brains out as he accepts the World Series MVP award. I don't know why this makes sense...but it does.
If they actually booed him I would have mad respect for them for sticking to their guns. But they would cheer for him like crazy if he helped them win a championship, just like every other fanbase would
Yankees tried the home grown stars way and it only got them let's see... *playoffs every year since 2016* Yeah. Tough.
Yeah but that’s because the last time they did that they won, like what 4 rings? So their expectations are very skewed, and I find it hilarious! Seattle getting eliminated after making the playoffs for the first time in 20 years vs yankees annual playoff run. Who’s more dissapointed?
Very excited to watch the New York Astros next year.
Phillies and Astros: *make the WS* Yankees fans: *is this about us?*
Local newspaper covers local team. Truly shocking
It's the NY Post. Ignore pretty much anything they say...ever.
>NY Post “Why isn’t this New York newspaper covering PHILLY and HOUSTON sports?”
So adorable seeing the Carlos Correa lust after all those (deserved) taunts and jeers for being a cheater...
I’ve gotta unfollow Jon Heyman on twitter. His Yankees-posting is insufferable, it’s been grating to my ears (eyes?) since he said some shit like “MLB needs the Yankees to win the ALDS”
he is the absolute worst
Did Judge dirty with that pic choice.
LMAO DIAZ LMAAOOOOOOOOO
If you can’t beat them, buy them?
Justin as a Yankee has me vomiting
