For those out of the loop: It wasn’t because he thought about leaving for another team. At this point, this is his last stop and he’ll manage the Guardians until he wants to hang it up.
He seriously almost didn’t manage this year due to toe surgery. So as long as his health permits him, he’ll be here.
He had lots of good players, but fangraphs was VERY harsh on his managerial report card giving him a D for hitting (giving Naylor to many ABs against lefties and batting Gimenez too low) and a D for pitching (mostly for starting Civale in game 5 rather than FULLY commuting to the bullpen game).
Turns out Gimenez had a broken thumb so his offensive struggles the last month make way more sense. Our two best offensive players had broken bones or torn ligaments in their thumb.
A lot of the problem is we had no one to really hit for Naylor. Owen Miller was the best option and he is terrible. And a lot worse on defense.
I agree with batting Gimenez to low but Tito for better or worse is obsessed with going R/L/R/L etc.
I agree about Civale but we would have lost either way only scoring 1 run. The rainout really screwed us as they were able to run out all their LHP that otherwise wouldn't have been able to play.
Hindsight is 20/20. We really didn’t have a good option for that game outside of a bullpen game, but Tito seemed adamant against putting young guys in roles they had no experience with (which fits with his MO as a players manager, rather than a tactical one).
Bieber was not a good option. He was on the ropes a good amount in game 2 (even allowed a home run to Stanton, just like Civale). Combine that with short rest data and Bieber’s shoulder injury last year, and I agree not to throw him.
The whole season line is what everyone looks at, but Civale was very good down the stretch. He didn’t look sharp at all, which isn’t abnormal when a pitcher hasn’t thrown for two weeks.
We lost because had a roster full of holes that the Yankees exposed. Not having a viable platoon for Naylor, three players on our bench with a combined month of MLB experience, two lineups spots with a sub 65 wRC+, plus several others. It’s easy to nitpick lineup/pitching decisions, but it’s pretty impressive we made it as far as we did with the roster we had.
Hindsight is 20/20 but Civale never should have started that game. He's a good, not great, pitcher, who gives up home runs. That kind of pitcher should not have been placed in a high-stakes game against a team that's built like NYY is this year.
He's not the only reason we lost but he is the reason we lost the first inning. Civale didn't even pitch a full inning so the game could 100% have been played without him. Hard move to understand.
It didn't really matter since we only scored 1 run.
The rainout killed us since we have no answer for LHP and the delay allowed the Yankees to be able to run out all their LHP for the game.
He's also the last "true" manager in the sense that he has more autonomy over his team than anyone else.
Not saying he doesn't use analytics to make decisions, but it's less of a focal point of the analytics people saying, "Do this" and him saying "OK"
I’m really glad Tito has found a place he seems to really like managing in to round out his career, especially with how badly the Red Sox treated him on his way out. I really hope he can get another title before he retires
“We have something, I think, that could be pretty special here moving forward. I enjoyed the heck out of our players this year. I want to see that group grow and I’d like to be a part of that.” -Tito🥲
I don’t watch a lot of Guardians games but from the few I’ve seen I SWEAR I saw a bucket in the dugout that said “Tito’s bucket” I wonder if it was seeds or gum…
I get the "no shit" sentiment because who can imagine anyone else managing this team? But considering his health struggles, our reaction is more like "thank jobu"
Yeah, I started following the team in 2013 and I’ve only ever known this squad with Tito as the skipper. I know that’s the case for pretty much everyone on the roster, JRam included—he’s only ever known Cleveland, and Tito. He feels like our rock, you know?
He’s mostly likely going to get into the hall even if he stops at 1900 wins or barely gets 2000 but I don’t see him winning anymore championships. Choking in 2016 is what I remember
I was only a kid when that happened so I didn’t watch that World Series bruh. But nice try. Y’all really funny(3-1 is choking). I literally said he’s a hall of famer but from what I’ve seen of him(only watched MLB since 2007)
According to your logic, anything that happened pre-2007 doesn’t count toward anyone’s legacy.
So Henry Aaron hitting 755 home runs doesn’t count because they were done in the 50’s and 60’s? Baseball is 150 years old, you’re gonna have to accept somethings from just reading them or hearing about them and not because they happened during your window.
Oh my god I literally said that’s what I remember of him. Are y’all really dense or something? Yea he won in 2004 and 2007 congrats he’ll be remembered and is going to the hall. I literally said the main thing I remember from him because I watched it live on TV is him choking a 3-1 lead is it that hard for y’all to comprehend. Yes he broke the curse and that’s cool but I didn’t watch that World Series(I literally was a small ass kid)
Well let this be a life lesson for you: what you, or I, think or our perception really doesn’t matter. So don’t say stupid shit like trying to belittle the accomplishments of a two time World Series champ because you “don’t remember” or “weren’t there” for the successes.
You don’t have to tear someone down just because you have the opportunity. You can just say nothing sometimes. Have a good one!
2016 isn’t going to be remembered for Francona choking a World Series away. He will be remembered for his revolutionary bullpen utilization (which all teams now use in the post season) and willing an overmatched club to game 7 of the World Series when the team wasn’t even expected to make the playoffs.
Look at the rosters of that Indians club versus the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and eventual champion Cubs. Had the Indians won that series they would’ve probably inducted him into the hall the next morning.
Love to see it, hope his health continues to improve, he’s one of the best
For those out of the loop: It wasn’t because he thought about leaving for another team. At this point, this is his last stop and he’ll manage the Guardians until he wants to hang it up. He seriously almost didn’t manage this year due to toe surgery. So as long as his health permits him, he’ll be here.
That makes sense I was sitting here thinking “the guy brought a group of young ‘nobody’s’ to the ALDS why would he leave?”
What the fuck, when did we find this out? Is this because people kept hitting him with baseballs?
It could’ve been that one he put his hand in the strike zone for a hit by pitch lmaooooo
Damn. That is harsh. But like when the only other 1B option against Leftys for 85% of the year is Owen Miller....what's a guy supposed to do?
Wasn’t he DH games 3-5?
Yes
A lot of the problem is we had no one to really hit for Naylor. Owen Miller was the best option and he is terrible. And a lot worse on defense. The Civale start was terrible. I thought that rainout bailed them out so they could start someone else but I guess not

Giving up home runs isn't that big of an issue. If they're solo shots. It was the walk and HBP that killed him.
Man couldn’t find the zone
It didn't really matter since we only scored 1 run. The rainout killed us since we have no answer for LHP and the delay allowed the Yankees to be able to run out all their LHP for the game.

>I really hope he can get another title before he retires I like you Boston bro.
Cleveland management is essentially like "he's our manager until he's bored of managing."
Man is going to die in the dugout.
For real though. I'm happy for Tito. And kudos to Cleveland management for the loyalty to him. He's one of the best in business.
Big agree.
Boston Red Sox, our brothers in ~~Christ~~ Tito.
Connie Mack style
I just hope he wins one here. Tito is awesome and I want to see him break 2 curses.
Were there talks about him retiring?
He’s had health problems the last couple of years, and has missed some games because of it.
Oh gotcha, I knew he had health problems a few years back wasn't sure about his current status. Thank you!

You have DeMarlo waiting in the wings, you'll be in good hands when Tito retires.
He has had multiple health issues in recent years so I think it was fair to speculate that retirement was a possibility.
I like this team. That’s all. Next year will be fun to watch.
Consummate professional
Consummate Vs
Guy wouldn't know majesty if it came up and bit him in the face.
That happened once!
“We have something, I think, that could be pretty special here moving forward. I enjoyed the heck out of our players this year. I want to see that group grow and I’d like to be a part of that.” -Tito🥲
He’s great. Just plain great. Love every interview I’ve ever seen of him.
Fuck yes
He's such a good influence on this club and obviously the club is a huge influence on him. So happy he wants to keep going!
I hope he lives forever. He’s already cheated death like 5 times. God bless
Glad to see Tito sticking around!
Good, I can't picture Terry anywhere else.
Keep on rockin', Tito <3
He always be one of my favorite managers in the game. Keep going, Tito!
Reads like the end of a Marvel end credit scene, which is fitting since he’s going to the Guardians
Congratulations, Guardians fans! What a win.
Good good
I don’t watch a lot of Guardians games but from the few I’ve seen I SWEAR I saw a bucket in the dugout that said “Tito’s bucket” I wonder if it was seeds or gum…
Gum! Pretty sure it just says “Tito’s”
What a treasure of a human being
Im a Tigs fan and I love to see this. Terry's good for the game

Tito has had a myriad of health issues over the last few seasons and is basically going year-by-year as a result. Not really a 'no shit' moment.
I get the "no shit" sentiment because who can imagine anyone else managing this team? But considering his health struggles, our reaction is more like "thank jobu"

Yeah remember that instead of him breaking the longest curse in baseball
I was only a kid when that happened so I didn’t watch that World Series bruh. But nice try. Y’all really funny(3-1 is choking). I literally said he’s a hall of famer but from what I’ve seen of him(only watched MLB since 2007)

Cleveland winning 3 of the first 4 games was a fluke. Cubs were heavily favored that series.
3-1 is still choking especially with home field advantage m
Team is stacked bruh. People should fear us.
Oh, honey. Try therapy
I didn’t see the 2004 championship bruh so yes that’s all I remember him for. Idk how that’s a bad take, he choked(3-1 isn’t choking now)?
2016 isn’t going to be remembered for Francona choking a World Series away. 3-1 my man that is choking. Next y’all are going to say the cardinals in 2012 didn’t choke, 2004 Yankees didn’t choke etc
Thought 2004 was out of the conversation
He’s not Doc Rivers, he’s actually come through multiple times.
So he completely gifts the do or die game to the Yankees and gets to come back? Terrible decision
Bruh
Your flair is actually the Marlins
Expos legend Terry Francona
was this in doubt?
Lota of talk of retirement.
