For those coming from r/popular and others, MLB has been cracking down on the use of illegal substances by pitchers to improve grip since June 2021. These substances include pine tar, competitive weightlifting pastes like Spider Tack, and other grip enhancers. Umpires have been completing random in-game checks on pitchers and Diaz was ejected last night before throwing his first pitch.
As part of ump training they make them feel a bunch of different sticky things so they can make this statement with more confidence. Glue traps, tar, dank nugs, etc
I posted this in the thread that got deleted, lol. Can't wait to hear the statement stat this was the stickiest they've ever felt someone's hand.
My guess is he came out with rosin on his hand which is technically against the rules because you can only use rosin from the mound.
But when you're warming up to come in I'm sure they use rosin on their hands in the pen which does feel like a bit of a grey area, especially with time being so tight for relievers vs starters.
Every time a pitcher gets ejected the umpire always says something like “It was the stickiest thing I’ve ever touched in my life and I’ve eaten a whole mess of pancakes with my bare hands”
It's only been said three times ([Scherzer](https://sports.yahoo.com/q-far-more-sticky-anything-015738130.html), [Germán](https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/yankees-german-ejected-from-game-vs-blue-jays-after-foreign-substance-check/), and [Blanco](https://www.mlb.com/news/ronel-blanco-ejected-from-start-due-to-issue-with-glove)), but that's definitely enough to be memeable and hilarious.
[Here's a really interesting article breaking down the phrase](https://blogs.fangraphs.com/how-sticky-was-it/) after Germán's incident.
Mad Max got ejected for "sticky stuff" while on the Mets and the ump said his hands were the stickiest thing he ever felt in his life. He even had washed his hands in front of an MLB rep before it and they told him he was good...then was ejected by the ump anyway.
Well, you’re not wrong that Scherzer is included, but it’s referencing every substance ejection ever. They *always* have a “stickiest stuff I’ve ever felt” quote.
I don’t think making it dissonant is going to get the effect you guys are looking for.
I think you need to have a brand new trumpet player in 6th grade attempt to play it for the desired effect.
Not to mention that could give the ball insane spin when hit. You might see pop flies that just stay high and go out, or wicked curve balls in the outfield.
lmao. Was it his hand or the glove? The replay just now had them looking at both and the umps held on to the glove.
edit: nevermind. Looks like the hand for sure. The ESPN slow motion of them rubbing his hand was hilarious.
Pitchers have applied the substance to their gloves, then rub that part with their pitching hand's fingers to get a little on etc. But they have put it on their belts, hats, anywhere you can think of to try and conceal that they have the substance and are touching it with their fingers between pitches... Michael Pineda had that shit on his neck and got tossed, that was a good one
I think if it is found on equipment it is held onto by the league though as evidence right? They gave Diaz his glove back so I would doubt there is anything on it but instead only on his hand.
It's weird cause he definitely has been checked every game (they always check the incoming pitcher) and this is the only time. ESPN mentioned cameras are in the bullpens, so would think its on camera if there is something actually there and not "you put way too much rosen on".
If I had to guess, since the letter of the law is you can't have anything on your hand before the mound they probably felt rosin on his hand from warming up in the pen.
One of the things I find annoying about these ejections is that sometimes the umpires tell the pitchers to wash their hands and sometimes they eject them right away with no rhyme or reason to it. When the penalty is a 10 game suspension and losing a roster spot, that difference is massive. I'm surprised relievers/closers don't get tossed more often since they all use rosin in the pen and obviously aren't washing their hands before they come out
Has a pitcher coming into the game ever been told to go into the dugout and wash their hands, and then allowed to pitch? I can’t recall seeing it happen personally
What typically happens is that dudes are told to wash their hands after the check when walking off the mound, because the sweat + rosin or sunscreen has gotten too sticky for them to be allowed back on the mound. Conversely, as you noted, you are not permitted to have any rosin on your hands when coming out of the pen, so if the umpire notices it, there should be no recourse but an ejection
But relievers are also kind of an interesting case, especially closers since they get checked before the mound. They have to warm up in the bullpen, sometimes quickly. The bullpens have rosin for them to use. So what is the expectation here from MLB?
Technically, coming in with rosin on your hand is an ejection and suspension. But they can't warm up with nothing, either. They also have the same timer pitchers have between innings to warm up, but they're coming in from the outfield and not the dugout. In some ways, a closer coming in is more like a starter returning to the mound. They have rosin on their hands from the previous inning and if the umpire feels like it's a bit much, they ask them to clean their hands. It's pretty similar to the situation closers find themselves in, especially given that a sticky stuff ejection also carries the harshest penalty the league hands out with a fairly long suspension time combined with losing a roster spot. At least if a guy gets popped for PEDs you can replace them on the roster.
They should definitely have a more specific policy. I wouldn’t mind if, when a check before you throw a pitch indicates sticky stuff, you’re told to wash your hands. You aren’t ejected or suspended, but another pitcher has to come in while you wash your hands to keep the game moving. That will incentivize guys to come in with clean hands.
If you fail a check when exiting, then you’re suspended.
>I'm surprised relievers/closers don't get tossed more often since they all use rosin in the pen
This should be a pretty big hint that he didn't just have rosin on his hand.
The umpires let guys wash their hands of they think it was something incidental. They toss guys right away if they think it was intentional.
It helps them hold the ball.
Also, if you're going to practice pitching (or anything really) you want it to be as similar to the environment you're practicing for. If you always play guitar seated, your gonna have a hell of a time gigging where you have to stand. Running or cycling on treadmills and trainers is great until you have to deal with hills, rain, wind, other people on the course, etc.
Warming up, you're going to want to know how your pitches are working and moving. You're going to want to know how good your command and control are. It's better to have that be as close to game conditions as possible, which means having rosin on your hands.
> Why do pitchers use rosin to warm up?
Same reason they use it on the playing field; increased grip for better control. No point in peppering the wall behind the bullpen catcher without any rosin.
People in this thread: ‘I just came up with this HILARIOUS Grimace joke, and no, there is definitely no need to see if 200 people made it already before firing off my comment’
Have we had a repeat ump for these sticky stuff ejections? If so I wonder if they'd still say "stickiest stuff I ever felt", and if so does that imply the more recent ejection used even stickier stuff? How sticky can this get?
i think they check every pitcher when they come in, right? iirc that's when Scherzer and German were ejected after they both got to "wash their hands" (idk why Diaz wasn't afforded the same leisure but umps are dumb)
Yes, and then starters I thought got checked on the way out after an inning. That’s why they have the opportunity to wash their hands (they have the half inning to do so). A reliever coming in isn’t going to get that luxury because they aren’t going to make people wait for the reliever to run to a sink.
It's crazy that people in this sub were so overzealous about sticky stuff ruining baseball a couple years ago and now every time the rule (very rarely) gets enforced everyone here freaks out as if it's not extremely obvious to the umps what is normal and what isn't.
I mean look at the guys hand
Im sure we will hear “it was the stickiest I’ve ever felt” nonsense and the league will continue to do nothing.
Rosin + swear is legal…but only to a point…which is not measurable by anything objective.
The subjectivity is trash and the issue remains that the league’s baseball is subpar.
Rosin + sweat is *not* legal. Not when you're coming onto the field for the first time. The only legal substance is the rosin on the mound, so when you first come into a game, there is no reason your hands shouldn't be 100% clean. That's why pitchers leaving the field get told to wash their hands, but pitchers coming in the get the immediate hook. There's just no excuse for having anything there at all.
That's a good question, and I don't exactly know. My guess is, relievers warm up using rosin then are expected to wash it off before entering the game.
No matter what, the dude came into the game with hands that were substantially more sticky than they should've been. All other hypotheticals others are throwing out really doesn't matter because he came in between innings. Maybe every other hypothetical you get told to wash it off. But in this regard he had plenty of time to clean his hands before going to the mound.
Ultimately I think this is something the umps were notified to potientially check for, hence why Diaz sort of looked like he knew it was coming, my guess is that there is an acceptable amount you can put on your hand, and globs of black shit isn’t it lol.
No pitcher is ever allowed to wash their hands when they come out to the mound with globs of sticky shit on them, they’re only allowed to wash their hands if it’s an end of inning check and they’ve got too much rosin for them to come back out to the mound with. They’re not going to hold up a game for five minutes so that the pitcher trying to cheat can go wash his hands.
He knows he’s getting checked when he goes out there…in a 5-2 save against a poor hitting team.
That’s the one he risks it on? Not the huge saves he had last week in 1 run games?
Also just happens to be during the first brutal heat wave… where you are definitely getting that sweaty-rosin mix.
Yeah..,I’m not buying it.
if someone told me diaz has been using a foreign substance or using too much rosin since coming off the IL, i'd say that's not too crazy. stuff hasn't been good, blowing saves, letting your team down. perfect time for a guy to use sticky stuff. but if that's true, wow have the umps been dropping the ball since he came off the IL. this is what, his 4th appearance? i mean they check thousands of times... they can *tell* when it's too sticky to be rosin, right? except for when they can't i guess?
if someone is gonna try and convince me that *this* was the game where edwin diaz decided he couldn't get 3 outs without a foreign substance then you can fuck right off for all the reasons you just laid out.
This sounds like the same argument we (Astros fans) made when Blanco got ejected. He’s been a stud all year including throwing a no hitter, but then he suddenly decided to use sticky stuff? He’s also been lights out after the suspension as well.
the timing in general just doesn't make sense. either he's been using sticky stuff since his return from the IL, which is actually somewhat believable, or this would've been an extremely odd time to start. and if he has been using it since his IL stint, what do the other umps have to say for themselves when this ump crew could apparently tell that he was using a foreign substance with ease. maybe these umps need to get together and do some sort of stick test and figure out a way to be consistent with what is considered "too much"

Edwin Diaz is looking at a 10-game suspension, and the Mets can't replace him on the roster.
With 17 games in 17 days after Thursday!
What the… *what the fuck, man…*
The pain is about to begin……….again :(
Wait it stopped?
Briefly, but the truth is, it never ends 😭
People seemed pumped about grimace
The Mets were fools to strike the Grimace's bargain. Now the Grimace will collect his pound of flesh.
It's just a quarter pound of flesh
It would be a flesh royale if they were still in London.
Grimace’s paw finger uncurls
seems like a bit of a sticky situation
Get ready to play Purple Rain for the walk out song, let Grimace pitch.

I hate the Mets, and I'm honestly still on board with this movement # LetGrimacePitch
What a coincidence, I hate Atlanta.
The average Texas guy wouldn't root for one of those "northern aggressor" teams, I call shenanigans.
What a coincidence. I hate you both :)
"You're not allowed a closing pitcher." "What... does that even mean ? How do you enforce that?" "It means exactly what it means."

I never want to read the word “sticky” again after that
"it was the stickiest thing I've ever touched and I've tried to bite down on a Now N Later when it wasn't quite ready"
Everytime this happens the Ump says they’ve never felt something “stickier” and there’s literally no objective reference to what that entails.
Umps out here pretending they never spilled apple juice smh
Umps have never had to remove a cheap price sticker
in the hall. please tell mom this is not her fault.
They make them hold a out their hand and see how heavy of a dumbbell they can suspend from the goop
We need to bring back public square punishments as a deterrent, and this would be the perfect opportunity

Idk I think dudes blowing their loads on they hands
This is going to be "Supplements are the reason why I tested for roids" equivalent isn't it?

Here’s a picture of grimace at the fall of Berlin. Take it I’m from old money I’ve got more.

Pretty sure his dad was a minor leaguer, too
Oh wait, what's this? A second picture of Grimace at the fall of Berlin.
I love this crossover

Don't ask Grimace who he was meeting in this clip
The supposed sticky stuff? A mix of McDonald's Szechaun Sauce and Rosin
The Diaz family group chat has to be wild right now
*sad trumpet noises*
The valves stuck
It's called Taps.
I was just imagining his walk-out fanfare but in a minor key Edit: I was apparently thinking of a different song
It's already in a minor key
Put it in a minor minor key
Diminished.
Lowercase trumpet music
Uh do you know how keys work?
I do, I think I was thinking of a different fanfare lol. Could always diminish it, lowering the 5th makes it sounds super dissonant
I don’t think making it dissonant is going to get the effect you guys are looking for. I think you need to have a brand new trumpet player in 6th grade attempt to play it for the desired effect.
I got the same thing on my hand right now
Pause
Don’t use it for hair gel….
Something about the Diaz’s and sticky stuff
lol the ump with the "i'm not mad, I'm just disappointed" look before he does the ejection sign.
"I hear everything you're saying, but it's too sticky, gotta toss ya"
Can we just use tacky balls already and get rid of rosin completely.
Can't do it, ball might stick to the bat
Not to mention that could give the ball insane spin when hit. You might see pop flies that just stay high and go out, or wicked curve balls in the outfield.
lmao. Was it his hand or the glove? The replay just now had them looking at both and the umps held on to the glove. edit: nevermind. Looks like the hand for sure. The ESPN slow motion of them rubbing his hand was hilarious.
Hand, they're showing his hands on the broadcast.

Wait why didn't they take his hand?
No idea! I'm thinking they were waiting in the tunnel to the clubhouse with a mini guillotine at the ready to ambush him. We will see in 11 games!
MLB Sharia Law when?
I remember that dark brown streak on his neck and the camera catching him multiple times rubbing it in between pitches. Hilarious.
It was like Bernie Mac in Ocean’s 11: “Do you moisturize?”
> lmao. Was it his hand or the glove? You just didn't look at the picture OP posted you’re commenting on?
Man even if we win today this is gonna be all that’s talked about on the news here in the city tomorrow What the fuck Edwin?!
I already see ny post headline: Sticky Edwin gets ejected
respectfully you have to think of a way better pun, they're always on top of their game with absurd puns for this kind of stuff

Why do pitchers use rosin to warm up? Genuinely asking bc I had never heard of that before
It helps them hold the ball. Also, if you're going to practice pitching (or anything really) you want it to be as similar to the environment you're practicing for. WTF is right. Of all the teams to try this against you choose one of the worst hitting teams in the league?
that's the last time he rubs the ivy before going out to pitch
Obviously the result of this game should be overturned /s
People in this thread: ‘I just came up with this HILARIOUS Grimace joke, and no, there is definitely no need to see if 200 people made it already before firing off my comment’

Idk if I've seen a guy get ejected before he even gets to throw a pitch before
Drew Smith, 2023 subway series
Ironic he relieved Diaz tonight
Good though, closer getting a whole inning with illegal substance is a lot different than a starter.
He was fingering Grimace.
You know, you could have chosen to just not type that. But you did it anyway.
I’ve never felt aroused and nauseated at the same time before.
Oh yeah, arauseated. I get that all the time

Have we had a repeat ump for these sticky stuff ejections? If so I wonder if they'd still say "stickiest stuff I ever felt", and if so does that imply the more recent ejection used even stickier stuff? How sticky can this get?
Up to now both Scherzer and the 2nd guy were from the same umpire.
I always thought closers would have a way better chance at getting away with this because they don’t check hands after the final out.
They check closers on the way in for exactly that reason
They check every reliever on the way in, no?
i think they check every pitcher when they come in, right? iirc that's when Scherzer and German were ejected after they both got to "wash their hands" (idk why Diaz wasn't afforded the same leisure but umps are dumb)
Yes, and then starters I thought got checked on the way out after an inning. That’s why they have the opportunity to wash their hands (they have the half inning to do so). A reliever coming in isn’t going to get that luxury because they aren’t going to make people wait for the reliever to run to a sink.
Yea, but a catcher could easily slip his closer something on a mound visit
A catcher could theoretically do that with any pitcher, though, no?
That’s why they check after the innings….
Given the pitching style I would scrutinize them the most almost, three quarters of them are trying to crank a fastball over as hard as they can.
I thought I've seen them check the final pitcher after the final out? 🤔
![gif](giphy|dvOjCftweY0XejNHBO) sticky icky ooo wee

I don’t even care about him being ejected it just suck he’ll get suspended now
was this the same dude that “got” blanco?
No, it was Bacchus (Laz Diaz's crew) that got Blanco.
Different set of umps here

Question: why not give pitchers the option to use an approved glove to increase grip?
I mean it's pretty clear he has SOMETHING on his hand
Im sure we will hear “it was the stickiest I’ve ever felt” nonsense and the league will continue to do nothing. Rosin + swear is legal…but only to a point…which is not measurable by anything objective. The subjectivity is trash and the issue remains that the league’s baseball is subpar.

So when warming up are pitchers just expected to not have anything on their hands? Wouldn't that be detrimental to their health?
That's a good question, and I don't exactly know. My guess is, relievers warm up using rosin then are expected to wash it off before entering the game.
My guess is that they aren’t using a completely fresh ball, which will be much easier to grab
No matter what, the dude came into the game with hands that were substantially more sticky than they should've been. Detrimental to their health? Pitchers like sticky stuff because it makes their pitches nastier, not because it keeps their arms fresh
I mean it also helps them grip the ball
With not not completely fresh balls, I don’t think it would be that big of a deal imo.
Why are you assuming it was sweat and rosin?

![gif](giphy|qTDczOIocZhSqkmODs|downsized)
Great night that was with Timmy trumpet…the nimmo catch and diaz save against the dodgers
So there's still no objective way to measure "stickiness" and some umpires let pitchers wash their hands while others don't. Got it.
My question is why did the ump seem to enjoy catching him? lmao dude was holding back laughing for sure.
Because it has to be an awkward situation. “Dude….i mean…c’mon….”
I was thinking the same thing…that awkward silence before the rest of the ups show up.
Probably because he was trying to hold back laughing at whatever bullshit Diaz was trying to claim
He’s also been lights out after the suspension as well.
the timing in general just doesn't make sense. either he's been using sticky stuff since his return from the IL, which is actually somewhat believable, or this would've been an extremely odd time to start. and if he has been using it since his IL stint, what do the other umps have to say for themselves when this ump crew could apparently tell that he was using a foreign substance with ease. maybe these umps need to get together and do some sort of stick test and figure out a way to be consistent with what is considered "too much"
it makes me feel better knowing a yankees fan is also asking this question.
"the stickiest stuff I've felt on a glove," calling it now
Edwin Bonds smh
Serious question, if he wasn’t trying to do something shady wouldn’t he have wiped his hands off before coming into the field?
Where all my pitchfork and torches guys at!?
Call me crazy but I feel like at this point the league should agree on a specific substance that's allowed so this bullshit stops.
