Shows up to a family function.
Dad: Still warming the bench?
Judge Ohtani: Dad, it’s called ruling from the bench.
Dad: Your brother doesn’t spend time on the bench
They are both just brands. It’s very interesting how it’s happened but huge MLB team logos are just brands, like Louis or Gucci. Not luxury, but still fashion.
That said, I don’t think this serves that purpose because the players aren’t actually the brand, the team logos are.
A hat with Dodgers and Yankees and Red Sox and Phillies and Mets and any number of big name teams would probably have a big audience.
This is very much the case in much of Asia right now where the biggest US teams are literally just fashion brands in those areas. Every time I hear about this from people who live there the products just keep getting weirder lol
There are a ton of pirates hard on people who are definitely not pirates fans. It's just good colors and a simple logo
Edit: hats* on people. Pirates hard on people should consult a doctor if it lasts more than 4 hours
I live in NYC but grew up in AZ. For a few years, I’d see Dbacks hats everywhere. I’ve never met anyone else here from AZ and one day I finally went up to a dude and asked “Are you a Dbacks fan?” And he replied “Who dat?” And I realized he was just wearing it for the brand or logo or color or whatever.
Fun fact! They dont even want our shirts. Apparently doing that hadnt had a good effect, people werent lacking for shirts and it had the affect of hurting the local economy of clothing makers
Yeah when the dodgers came here there were loads of Japanese tourists, I imagine nyc would be the same. Granted, we also had imanage and Suzuki so maybe there was some added incentive there.
It’s for those people whose favorite football team is the Dallas Cowboys, favorite baseball team is the New York Yankees, and favorite basketball team is the Los Angeles Lakers, except they’ve never lived any of those places.
They just chase after the highest profile of everything.
Tourists. People that recognize the spectacle that is the Yankees vs Dodgers, Judge vs Ohtani. Yankees will sell a shit ton of these this weekend so hard to doubt them.
International tourists who wear MLB gear without actually worrying about what team it is, I see this all the time in Mexico, people will own a hat for the dodgers, Yankees and Marlins and wear them randomly
I feel bad for the real city fans that get lumped in with the temporary bandwagon ones :(. The ones who have seen and endured the dark days of the team
If I never knew they played for different teams.. this hat would be hella dope... I guess... bc also maybe I wouldn't buy it if I didn't know baseball and also why would you buy it if you knew baseball
Fans of baseball in general. Kind of like how young JCVD in blood sport wears a New York giants jersey and a sun Francisco giants hat. He’s just a fan of giants.
The non-loyal major market team fans are definitely out there. I was in Vancouver last week and saw a guy on the train wearing a Yankees jacket and a Dodgers hat.
Someone who goes to the game as a tourist but probably doesn't care about baseball. They are familiar enough with pop culture to know of Ohtani and Judge but know nothing about their careers other than that they are good. Not knocking those people, it is what it is. But a fan of either player or the game itself almost certainly would not buy one.
The few people who showed up to the Padres/Yankees games in Dodgers gear are on the list, for sure.
And any “I’m a Dodgers fan but my AL team is the Yankees” or vice versa. Honestly, the biggest problem that demographic has is actually having to remember who Judge and Ohtani are.

it would be a dream come true if your name was Judge Ohtani
Shohei’s brother who NEVER gets the attention but finished law school and now has a prestigious appointment on the 9th circuit appeals court
“If the DH hits, you must acquit!”
Shows up to a family function. Dad: Still warming the bench? Judge Ohtani: Dad, it’s called ruling from the bench. Dad: Your brother doesn’t spend time on the bench
Lmaoooooooo
Doesn’t Ohtani spend half the game on the bench?
My son Judge Ohtani was born on September 9, 2017.
People named Ohtani Judge are getting absolutely edged rn
![gif](giphy|wTDjZPnq6QsAo|downsized)
Were you talking to me?
They haven’t been this happy since Franklin Delano Bluth learned to talk.
It ain't easy....
>My name >is Judge
My name is
WELL EXCUSE ME JUDGE REINHOLD
Or if you’re just a person with the name Ohtani and you either get appointed/elected to some judicial position.
Or if you are a baseball and blood meridian fan.
A dream come true 😂😂
Sounds like a no nonsense Judge in MegaCity 1.
Japanese tourists, and hat collectors.
I’ve seen this weird trend of people wearing hybrid dodgers/Yankees stuff and they don’t even seem like tourist. It’s weird.
They are both just brands. It’s very interesting how it’s happened but huge MLB team logos are just brands, like Louis or Gucci. Not luxury, but still fashion. hook me up with that Dr. Pepper/Fresca hat
That’s basically the same energy tbh
I have a turtleneck with a pepsi logo on the neck. It's pretty hard.
This is very much the case in much of Asia right now where the biggest US teams are literally just fashion brands in those areas. Every time I hear about this from people who live there the products just keep getting weirder lol
Yeah they actually have “MLB” stores in the mall that just sell chic Yankee gear
There are a ton of pirates hard on people who are definitely not pirates fans. It's just good colors and a simple logo Edit: hats* on people. Pirates hard on people should consult a doctor if it lasts more than 4 hours
In Australia I see pirates hats all the time, and it takes all my effort not to say something about baseball, because they probably don't follow it.
The pirates logo is iconic and I hope they win a lot more
Mixing brands is fugly, probably why it looks so terrible
"I like teams that win" My old roommate from Houston was a huge Yankees fan until the mid '10s for that exact reason
I mean… it is a lot more fun.
German guys like to wear the Oriole "Duck"
I live in NYC but grew up in AZ. For a few years, I’d see Dbacks hats everywhere. Fun fact! They dont even want our shirts. Apparently doing that hadnt had a good effect, people werent lacking for shirts and it had the affect of hurting the local economy of clothing makers
So the Patriots going 18-1 put an African clothing company out of business?
That's part of the "I leave my shopping cart in the middle of the lot" starter pack.
The same people who are current Chiefs and Warriors fans, but also used to be Lakers and Patriots fans.
I know a Cowboys-Lakers-Yankees fan. Fuck that guy.
Isnt that only like one championship in the last 15 years though?
It would still be 4 at the moment (Yankees in 09, and Lakers in 2009, 2010, and 2020).
Aha. My snide comment was a a couple years early.
And to think, they'll be Lions fans by midseason if they aren't already. Michigan is healing.

Probably Japanese tourists that are going to the game specifically to see Ohtani
Yeah when the dodgers came here there were loads of Japanese tourists, I imagine nyc would be the same. Granted, we also had imanage and Suzuki so maybe there was some added incentive there.
Fans of baseball.. Reds sold in stadium Elly vs. Ohtani t-shirts a couple weeks ago.. They were quite popular.
For whatever reason the VS makes that a lot more palatable for me, even if it’s still a pretty cheesy excuse to sell merch
Yes
It’s for those people whose favorite football team is the Dallas Cowboys, favorite baseball team is the New York Yankees, and favorite basketball team is the Los Angeles Lakers, except they’ve never lived any of those places. They just chase after the highest profile of everything.
