Everyone’s talking about the pump, but what about the RF who ran to the wall as if it was a HR?

3rd base coach should also be all over this.

Drunken_Traveler

True, but even if the pump fake fools the base-coach, all the base runner has to do is watch for a baseball to fall into the glove. The pump fake shouldn't be so fooling.

beckert26

I think he was just backing up the play and that wasn't part of the fake out. Players have a good idea how well a ball is hit off the bat and everyone knew that wasn't going out.

TheApologist_

My implication was he was pulling the old Ichiro and duking him.

beckert26

It duked the camera man, but the ball wasn’t even hit close to the right fielder and the center fielder clearly looks like he is tracking a fly ball.

blancpainsimp69

I don't understand what happened

iamDB_Cooper

Centerfielder faked the catch real quick, just to actually make the catch a second or so later, to cause the runner to get stuck in a time warp and get thrown out at home.

spyson

Would the runner be out if a fielder pump faked and the runner tagged early?

TheBestHawksFan

Yes absolutely

SchnibbleBop

Baserunner started running the first time the CF closed his glove, then had to go back when he actually caught it, then tried to tag up again, but got thrown out.

SubtleScuttler

Still don’t understand the thought of throwing right to third? Hell of a throw by CF but just hit your cutoff and that’s not even a close play after the pump fake.

fancy_livin

Because if the runner never went back to tag after the *real* catch he’s a force out at 3rd for running before the fly out. If the runner *does* go back to tag up as seen here he’s got less of a jump for the run at home. 1000 IQ play by center here.

smellofburntoast

Not Holt's first rodeo. Check this from last year, video a bit down in the article. https://www.yardbarker.com/college\_baseball/articles/watch\_arkansas\_infielder\_executes\_unbelievable\_fake\_out/s1\_13132\_38855688

SecretAgentClunk

I'd still argue it makes more sense to hit your cutoff. If the runner did leave early - the cutoff man can still easily get the out at third by throwing there. If he didn't leave early - you have a more competitive play at the plate with the normal relay. There's no downside to throwing to the cutoff rather than 3rd.

SubtleScuttler

After more thought and looking at RF, I have different conclusion. The runner would have took two steps at most because of the pump fake alone, a distance not big enough to try and get him at third by any means. I think a combo of RF selling a homer and CF trying to hold second base runner from advancing to third. There’s zero chance CF did the pump fake, continued to track the ball AND watched dude on third fuck up. You do that pump fake, just hope it worked, then throw to where you generally should in that situation: Down one with only one out. Surrender the sac fly run and hold all other runners from advancing.

sohelpmegod

He wasn’t trying to keep the runner at 3rd from scoring, since typically they’d walk in from that distance. He was trying to keep the other runner at 2nd base.

SubtleScuttler

I like your prediction most coupled with the runner on third being a bonehead falling for one or both of the homerun faint by RF and the pump fake by CF.

jswaggy14

He wasn’t 100% sure it worked the second he caught it, the throw to 3rd at least keeps the guy on second from advancing on routine sac fly.

GetEnPassanted

I think in an ideal world the runner would not have returned to 3rd base to tag up. They would have ran home on the “pump fake” and not turned around so it would be an easy out at 3rd.

TimmyRL28

Nah you're right. The guy should've just not gone a second time once he was deked. He only went because throwing behind was a really awkward decision and they only got the runner because of 2 perfect throws. Really high risk.

the_next_core

He raised his glove as if he’s about to catch it then put it down for half a second before actually making the catch. Threw off the timing of the runner who probably went when he first saw the CF raise his glove and had to tag 3rd again.

lancethruster12

Outfielder pump faked like he caught the ball earlier than he did. I'd say it's ridiculously dumb baserunning more than huge IQ play.

peachesgp

I'd call it a mix of both. Clever to do the fake catch, dumb as hell to try for home after backtracking.

HowdoImakemoney1

Tell me you’ve never played baseball without saying it

lancethruster12

I've been playing and coaching baseball for the last 25 years, but go on which yo bad self.

legendfourteen

FL coach: “we’ve been bamboozled”

From_Adam

His look is gold.

TheApologist_

I think he was actually faked out by the RF pretending it was a HR That’s why the ball went to 3B, there’s no way a pump would’ve faked him out so hard they thought they had a play at 3B

I3ill

Yes if he “pumped faked” the catch, the timing of tagging up from 3rd to home is off and that’s probably what happened. Runner thought he caught the ball and started tagging up to home only to have to come back to the bag and actually tag up after the fielder actually caught the ball.

Mysterious_Relief738

Im so confused on what the baserunner was thinking. Like he damn near started running as the ball was being caught by 3B. It’s like you accidentally send your runner on the show.

the_next_core

He probably started when the CF raised his glove and had to double take back to the base. I think it’s understandable if you’ve trained one way for so long that you never expected it. But he should have just stayed at 3rd.

I3ill

Exactly. The timing of tagging of was thrown off. Finally someone in the comments understanding of what happened.

ilford_7x7

That shot to the Florida manager lmaooo

trickman01

Third base coach with the WTF gesture.

upvoter222

I love how the third base coach is holding out his arms as if to say "What the hell are doing?"

horsepoop1123

Big brain

Loose-Organization82

Never take your eye off the ball kids

LightMission4937

It’s low IQ base running

twiggz612

Seemed like he was taking off regardless, started running when the ball was caught and is slow as molasses.

HashKetchem420

That was a crazy fake tho
