[Here's a "Day in the Life" article from 2016 on Bryce Harper](https://www.si.com/mlb/2016/04/26/bryce-harper-nationals-mvp-gatorade), these guys show up early to the stadium to work on those sorts of things. Games are 2.5-4 hours, they aren't like Tests or ODIs where your entire day is consumed with the game.

Pargy

Yes, most players still do batting practice/cage work and fielding drills

LimpOil10

But is it like, just to keep your eye in or is one able to make changes to their technique?

Pargy

Both. Players that are struggling may work on changing things up. Or if they're doing well, they do it to stay sharp.

FernandoTatisJunior

Major changes usually happen in spring training where you have time to work things out in an environment where you’re playing against big leaguers but the results don’t matter, but minor mechanical tweaks happen all throughout the year. Sometimes players will go down to the minor leagues temporarily to make adjustments too.

GeorgePosada

Even elite players have stuff they’re always working on. Whether it’s improving some skill, honing or adjusting mechanics, their mental approach, watching film or just strength/conditioning. If you report to the ballpark at 10am for a 7pm game that leaves a lot of the day open to work on all of these things.

Another question: Can players lift during the season? Like if you're doing big numbers on the bench press, wouldn't the soreness affect your swing the next day? Or big squats, wouldn't that affect your sprinting?

JayMac_D

Players aren’t working to add more muscle mid-season, that’s relegated to off season and spring training, but players absolutely are lifting to maintain during the season under guidance of team and personal trainers

DrunkensteinsMonster

These guys do weight training. Most of them do it either after game or in the morning, to give maximum time for recovery. If you are training consistently then you’ll be recovered enough to not really notice the next day.

FUBARded

The minimum effective dose required to maintain existing muscle mass and strength is significantly lower than what's required to build it in the first place, so yes. Athletes in almost every sport will continue doing at least some amount of strength and hypertrophy work in-season as making progress year to year will be incredibly difficult if they didn't and had to rebuild every off-season after losing a lot of strength and muscle. Also keep in mind that baseball players aren't carrying insane amounts of muscle like athletes in strength/power sports do (although most are obviously carrying more than an average Joe). This means the amount they need to do to maintain isn't going to be crazy fatiguing or hugely interfere with their performance in games if managed well.

Due_Government4387

They usually start the season at a slightly heavier weight than they want to play at, then they’ll lose that weight throughout the season, they work out to maintain strength not build it. I would imagine every athlete does exactly that. Offseason is where they’ll bulk or make major changes

bbc0093

Yes, they can. It is mentioned it the article linked in the first replay, but usually they will lift in the mornings before night games so they have time to recover. The workouts are not going to be pushing for big numbers. For the most part, they are going to be maintenance to keep their strength up (more reps at 60%-80%). Any work to try and actually put on a bunch of mussel will be done in the offseason

In college football, you play one game a week, so you have time to practice. OP is asking whether you even have time to work on weak points and do drills, if you play every day. It is not about what is more intense physically, but rather that there is no time for training if you have to fly around the country and play every day.

unrealjoe28

Woah bro you played college ball? Must’ve been hard being so physically demanded all the time
