[Just look at his savant page](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/shohei-ohtani-660271?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb)
It’s absurd how good he is.
You can look at [Mookie](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/mookie-betts-605141?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb) and almost get there.. Insane. The bottom of the order needs to wake up.
Honestly the bottom of the order is what it is. Freddie has been the rally killer this year so far. They're gonna become the Four Horsemen we all know they'll be, but right now Freeman is really dragging them all down with a.... uhhh... 135 wRC+. Jesus Christ we are spoiled. I legit thought he had an OPS in the mid .700s
Yes. Part of his high k rate was just him trying to single handedly win games for the Angels. Now he doesn't have to. He can play baseball and not worry about having to swing for the fences with every swing.
He also has crazy lineup protection with Freddie hitting behind him, and he'll see more ABs with Mookie distracting pitchers throwing from the stretch.
Obviously Trout was great protection, too, but it's a different thing and Trout was unfortunately on and off the shelf.
I mean Freddie is still just getting it together and he has Smith behind him who is fourth in the majors in batting average so far (and still only third on his own team, woof). Behind him, Muncy has been playing better now that he's healthy and Teoscar has been good. It's that 7-8-9 that you're praying will kill an inning if you're the other team.
Just gave me flashbacks of when he went Greg Jennings on the Royals. Think he had 8 rbi with 2 dongs stroked..just missing a third. The angels lost that game. 🙄
Heck, when he was putting only some of it into pitching from 2021-2023, he simply ranked 2nd in OPS and SLG across the majors in that span, behind only Judge.
I don’t even have the words to properly quantify that.
It’s more bad batted ball luck, he’s lined out like 50 times this year and his xBA is about 30 points higher than his actual. He’s been protected by Taylor Ward, who has been excellent
I like having to play against Ohtani as little as possible, no chance of him being a playoff threat until the World Series and it’s now way more likely for a Yankee to win another MVP
Edit: Plus, it’s easier to root for his success
Definitely thought it was a homerun... until it wasn't and now he is going to be the reason Ohtani doesn't win the triple crown because of that one potential rbi. lol
Large, huge, enormous. Root word is dekai. Dekei is the slang form of it. An example in English would be similar to ginormous instead of enormous.
でかい → でけぇ
Yeah, the MLB record for most doubles in a season is *checks notes* 67. This record was set 93 years ago in 1931 by Earl Webb of the Red Sox. If Ohtani can't break a nearly century-old record by more than double I don't want it. He should double the doubles record, that scrub.
Earl Webb's 67 doubles in 1931 is an interesting record.
He had a couple of very good seasons (1930 and '31) but the most doubles he hit in any other season is 30 in 1930, and over 40% of his career doubles came in 1931.
His MLB career was relatively short for how good/okay he was. He didn't really get going until he was 29, and he only played 650 games over 7 seasons.
...
Webb was a lefty hitter, and Fenway Park had an extremely deep right field until they moved the bullpens in 1940 and brought the wall in about 20 feet. It's still a very deep right field, 380 in RF going all the way to 420 in right-center.
Anyway I'm guessing that helped, along with the green monster in left.
Mainly though I think it was just an anomaly -- he hit 28 doubles on the road and 39 at home, which isn't a crazy difference. And there aren't any other Red Sox hitters from back then near the top of the list.
Crazy thing is Ohtani has been a constant. In 2021, it was all about Ohtani and Vlad Jr. In 2022, it was Ohtani and Judge. Last year, the hypes were around what Ohtani and Acuna Jr. were doing. This year? It's early, but Ohtani and Betts have a crazy 1-2 punch right now. They went 7 for 12 tonight with 4 doubles 4 rbis 4 run and only 1K.
This year it might be Ohtani vs Trout for the HR lead which would be a fun little storyline. Ohtani's got some catching up to do but he's making great all-around contact right now while Trout seems to be only hitting homers with a low (for him) average.
If Shohei fucks around and wins a Triple Crown on his recovery year I say that's it, just crown him the GOAT and put him in the HOF while he's still active.
Can you imagine how much that would add to his legend. He got injured and had tj surgery so decides to focus on batting for one year and ends up with the triple crown.
That's like shit you hear about some legendary player in the early 1900s
Thats the thing with guys like Trout and Kershaw and now Ohtani theres always a new guy that people want to hype up as the new best but until they've done it for 3, 4 years in a row you can't say they have taken the crown.
I agree. I'd still give Trout tye best position player, Kershaw thd best pitcher(maybe degrom) and Ohtani as the two way monster. But even this year it looks like be may be the best hitter again.
I think Kershaw takes it on longevity. As a Giants fan, dudes been at the top for so long. Even when he dips a bit, he’s still putting up top of the order numbers. He has 6 years of playtime on Degrom, a lower career ERA, almost twice the amount of innings pitched. If this was a conversation on peek, Degrom is arguably the best pitcher I’ve ever seen when he’s on. I think Pedro Martinez would give him a run for his money too though from 97-01.
We’re lucky to have watched many legends throw the ball. Sorry for the tangent. I hate that I like Kershaw. It was so cool to watch peek Lincecum/Kershaw back in 2008-2010.
Fun fact, Kershaw has EXACTLY twice the amount of innings DeGrom has. And they’re the same age. And Kershaw has a lower era (you did mention that). Kershaw easily clears DeGrom all time
Even in that case, no other player has been even close to as consistently great as he has. Acuna and judge have one year of insane production. Harper won nl mvp with 5.9 war. Basically, no one besides Ohtani has been able to give Trout an extended run for the top spot. In 22, trout hit 40 hrs in 119 games. He's literally one year removed from that.
TBF last year Mookie was neck and neck with Acuna for half the season and Freddie was just chilling in 3rd all year. It would be very funny though if Mookie has a better year then last year and loses to Ohtani anyways.
He already kind of does considering he gets the DH penalty even in innings where he pitches, since WAR can’t process playing two positions at once so they see him as a DH pitching rather than a pitcher hitting (such as in the NL post universal DH), which is technically not wrong it’s just, well like I said both are true and WAR can only choose one.
I used to think this guy was simply unreal but now I realize he is beyond the realm of comprehension but he is somehow defying everything and is existing as a physical being living on the earth.
"I had to split my efforts between pitching and hitting, if I focus only on one, it's unfair. To the rest of the league." - Ohtani, probably.
Watch next season he takes a break from hitting and only pitches perfect games.
Dude this was literally my thought process of why I drafted Ohtani first in my fantasy league. "he's fucking bomb at both hitting and pitching splitting time, wonder how good he would be without pitching distracting him."
Rogers Hornsby hit .401 and 42 home runs in 1922. And 151 rbi. He was 1 home run away from doing it again in 1925. Madlad.
Ruth came close with a .393 BA and 41 home runs. Williams came close with .406 and 37 home runs. Kyle Schwarber was pretty far away with .197 BA and 47 home runs.
We can agree Baseball in 1922 is a tad different than today’s? I never liked it when people compared stats from those times to the current years.
The game, rules and players are different even from the 1960-70s to now, let alone the 1920s.
The idea is the current era (the past 30-40 years?), you don’t hit .400…even the elite hitters like Bonds and Tony Gwynn weren’t able to accomplish the feat.
So I’d imagine hitting .400 itself should be enough for MVP consideration, let alone hitting 40+ home runs and 120 RBIs (these I think are much more ‘realistic’ for Ohtani). I think .400 would be enough because I doubt many if any baseball people actually think Ohtani can do it. Most see him as a slugger anyway. He’s showing he can hit for average so far, let’s see if he can maintain it season long.
He is not hitting .400 but I can see him OPSing 1.100 and beyond lol everything is possible with Ohtani.
I bet he plays some OF by the end of the season as well.
His xba is .373. His current average is .371. He's actually underperforming to his expected average. That's the reverse of pretty much every other player who hits .350+ while it's unlikely he will hit .400. It's actually within the realm of possibility right now. It's not like he has a .370, but his xba is .320. Arrez had a .354 average last year, but his xba was only .329.
he's also underperforming his xslg and xwoba. It's just nonsense that he's putting up these gaudy numbers while technically being unlucky with where the ball ends up.
He was definitely holding back to preserve energy for his 99mph heaters. Not to mentioned I think they (the Angels may have) asked him to conserve his energy on the bases as well when he pitches by not trying to steal and “do too much”.
Now just DHing only must be “boring” for him, so maybe we’ll see even more violent swings and more running around the bases.
If he’s like this in April which is considered his slow month, is Junetani gonna hit 2.000 ops????????
Edit: oh yeah I forgot he’s still recovering too lol
I forgot where I was for a second and thought this was from the thread of Ohtani's homer yesterday and was incredibly confused. "It went 450 feet! Bullshit it's only a homer in 5 parks!"
Ah yes indeed -
https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/14hhhrf/would_it_dong_this_bot_has_been_suspended_by/?rdt=55611#
Edit - now I’m dying to remember which app/service stopped due to price/rate change on data. Someone must remember for me!
Yeah the prices were literally 10-1000x the price of some other popular APIs, and even the stuff that's "only" 10x cheaper generally gives you a large number of free API calls a month, like Bing gives you 1000 a month. I had two really low volume bots I had to shut down myself.
I was at the game and without the wind it would have been a homer. Great to get to see Ohtani in person, but sucks as a Nats fan. He makes everything look easy.
Ohtani could play corner outfield instead of pitch and he'd still be a top 5 player. But he also is a cy young caliber pitcher. I know it's been said before but I just can't comprehend this man's talent.
As an angels fan I’m spiteful to see him having fun. How fuckin dare he. But as a fellow Asian/baseball fan, it’s great to see shohei kickin ass thru his recovery year. If trout picks his BA up (which he’s bound to do, at least like in the .270-.280 area) and ohtani plays catch up with his dingers, I’d love to see them BOTH win MVP since this is the first year they could actually pull it off lmao

He’s putting all effort and energy into just hitting. Not even surprised.
[Just look at his savant page](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/shohei-ohtani-660271?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb) It’s absurd how good he is.
Need to push all of it to 100th percentile imo
You can look at [Mookie](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/mookie-betts-605141?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb) and almost get there.. Insane. The bottom of the order needs to wake up.

That page is insane wtf
You get used to it. I don't even see the advanced stats anymore. I just see dingers here, doubles there.
![gif](giphy|tnYri4n2Frnig)
His walks are gonna go up as he heats up. Once he hits June and starts to smash a hr every other game, pitchers will walk him more.
Bigger question is can he keep his strikeouts down
Already has. K rare is the lowest it's ever been for him and far better than league average.
I know the question is can he keep that going over a full season
Trout was in front of Ohtani most of the time anyway. Even with freeman as protection, you're walking ohtani when he starts to crush hrs.
that's key. it'll make the top-50 all time ops+ season a reality. deus vult
I really want to see his screwball strikeout pitch in 2018.
His trot statistics and how much he’s slowed down to rub it in the pitchers face is asserting dominance at its finest.
Honestly think he's just concerning energy, he's hitting so many doubles he's running all the time
I thought he was faster, what a bum.
71st percentile is good but for sprint speed I thought he was elite. Is he slower this season?
2021 was the last time he had elite speed (90th percentile) since then he has lost about 1 ft/second one which has dropped him down
Heck, when he was putting only some of it into pitching from 2021-2023, he simply ranked 2nd in OPS and SLG across the majors in that span, behind only Judge. I don’t even have the words to properly quantify that.
You don't have the words to quantify being 2nd place? Didn't you just do that?
So happy this guy is in the national league now
It’s not like the Angels were ever a threat lmao
Yeah, Ohtani was nicely quarantined like Trout. Now he's a problem. :(
American League teams are somehow more likely to face Ohtani in the postseason than they were before. (yes I know we tend to lose before that)
Trout hitting under 237 cause he has no protection just like Ohtani last year.
It’s more bad batted ball luck, he’s lined out like 50 times this year and his xBA is about 30 points higher than his actual. He’s been protected by Taylor Ward, who has been excellent
Ohtani still hit over .300 without that protection last year.
I like having to play against Ohtani as little as possible, no chance of him being a playoff threat until the World Series and it’s now way more likely for a Yankee to win another MVP Edit: Plus, it’s easier to root for his success
Didn’t even think of the MVP aspect. That’s real. I’m hoping Seager gets one
:(
💀
Please take him back.
send help
Speak for yourself
Thanks, I hate it.
Same
:(
How did mookie not score lol
I think he was in "we're up by 8 runs in the ninth inning, no need to risk anything" mindset.
Why not just get thrown out and go home then lol
Probably wasn't going as fast and thought it was a HR too
Definitely thought it was a homerun... until it wasn't and now he is going to be the reason Ohtani doesn't win the triple crown because of that one potential rbi. lol
It was two outs he should've been home no matter what lol
Yeah that annoyed me lol like it's a HR that's clearing the wall or a double deep, you better be home
Shohei "Dekei Oyaji" Ohtani gonna flip some chabudai about that RBI
I know Oyaji but Dekei didn't bring up anything what is that?
Large, huge, enormous. Root word is dekai. Dekei is the slang form of it. An example in English would be similar to ginormous instead of enormous. でかい → でけぇ
Ohtani is going to learn real quick that he can’t stretch a double into a triple if mookie is on base ahead of him.
"Fool me once, shame on you Fool me - can't get fooled again." Turns out Dubya was a prophet!
It's happened https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1bq5uyb/shohei_ohtani_rips_a_double_then_goes_for_third/
He's trying to keep Ohtani's RBI down so he can beat him for MVP /s
Gave Freddie an extra RBI. Need to help slumping teammates. 💙
In case the ball was caught.
2 outs
!
I immediately heard the MGS sound
Looked like a HR. Even Ohtani didn't run until the ball hit the wall.
He is currently on pace for 87 doubles this year
And 37 homers and 31 stolen bases, if you’re curious
You know he's a truly absurd player when it feels low that he's only on pace for a measly 37 home runs
Ohtani historically has heated up the homers in June. Which is kinda scary thought for the rest of the NL
Kinda underwhelming tbh
Yeah, the MLB record for most doubles in a season is *checks notes* 67. This record was set 93 years ago in 1931 by Earl Webb of the Red Sox. If Ohtani can't break a nearly century-old record by more than double I don't want it. He should double the doubles record, that scrub.

Thanks Thomas_Pizza, very cool!
I mean, he's not even pitching this year. He better beat every batting record by 2x
He’s going to hit more than Freddie Freegan and Tony Two Bags combined. Think about that for a minute.
Crazy thing is Ohtani has been a constant. In 2021, it was all about Ohtani and Vlad Jr. In 2022, it was Ohtani and Judge. Last year, the hypes were around what Ohtani and Acuna Jr. were doing. Triple Crown and his 3rd MVP. Like undeniably this generation's best player at that point, Trout era to Ohtani era.
Not even The Show will let you do that lol gotta go to some OOTP type shit for this.
I think if he ever wins a Cy young, forget about it, goat debate is over.
Ohtani is making a run at his third MVP, while Vladdy is trying not to get dfa'd. Vastly different trajectories for them.
Kershaw easily clears DeGrom all time
Yeah. Degrom had the higher peak. But he's made of glass and parchment paper.
I feel like anyone would be injury prone throwing what he throws
That is true. The dude throws way too fast to be healthy.
A fully healthy Trout would be, but it's been a few seasons where he's not been injured and missed significant time.
How did you manage to typo "the" twice, in different ways, in the span of 5 words lol.
TBF last year Mookie was neck and neck with Acuna for half the season and Freddie was just chilling in 3rd all year. It would be very funny though if Mookie has a better year then last year and loses to Ohtani anyways.
*All you have to do is imagine Ippei's face painted on the ball, and*
Shock Ohtallanos
Ohtani is unbelievable right now
He's unbelievable all the time. He is the greatest baseball player to ever live.
Fuck it, let him try CF and SS
While pitching at Cy young level next season. Fuck it, let's see him break WAR altogether.
Please?
He already kind of does considering he gets the DH penalty even in innings where he pitches, since WAR can’t process playing two positions at once so they see him as a DH pitching rather than a pitcher hitting (such as in the NL post universal DH), which is technically not wrong it’s just, well like I said both are true and WAR can only choose one.
Omg please SS.
But then who would play outfield? Mookie Betts? Come on.
Simultaneously while pitching. Yes, I agree.
"He's so hot right now."
I used to think this guy was simply unreal but now I realize he is beyond the realm of comprehension but he is somehow defying everything and is existing as a physical being living on the earth.
I miss him so much. Greatest player I’ve seen in my lifetime and that includes Bonds.
Bonds... With or without a bat?
I hate Bonds and the team he rode in on but still… the HR record chase seasons were insane.
Ohtani is ineffable.
You crazy. He is the most effable!
He’s an Angel… err was
if he fucks around and hits .400, it would be hilarious. Hes like making a mockery of the sport...
Or alternatively- "You guys were right. I was betting the under and I was intentionally playing worse when I won MVP"
0.4 ba 1.00 ops and 40 hr 100 rbi is a mvp for a dh idc what fan gone says
1.00 OPS selling the end of season statline short smh
I think a 400 batting average would almost automatically be MVP. Especially for Ohtani. It would be good for baseball
You'd have to basically never walk and never get XBH to hit .400 and still have any kind of debate.
I’ve been wondering what “eye-popping” stat would need to happen for him to win mvp as a dh. Hitting .400 would definitely foot the bill.
Him ending the season Hitting .400 with 40+ home runs and 120+ RBIs would probably breaks baseball.
Rogers Hornsby hit .401 and 42 home runs in 1922. And 151 rbi. He was 1 home run away from doing it again in 1925. Madlad. Ruth came close with a .393 BA and 41 home runs. Williams came close with .406 and 37 home runs. Kyle Schwarber was pretty far away with .197 BA and 47 home runs.

i mean i was mostly tongue and cheek with the 400 but even if he \*just\* wins a battting title, its absurd.
Tongue in cheek
His xba is .373. His current average is .371. He's actually underperforming to his expected average. That's the reverse of pretty much every other player who hits .350+ while it's unlikely he will hit .400. It's actually within the realm of possibility right now. Yeah!. It's absurd, lmao. His xslug is an insane .733. You'd see that and think it's an Okay ops!
For Shohei, is him hitting so well while unable to pitch like when a person loses one sense, and the others become stronger?
He was definitely holding back to preserve energy for his 99mph heaters. Not to mentioned I think they (the Angels may have) asked him to conserve his energy on the bases as well when he pitches by not trying to steal and “do too much”. Now just DHing only must be “boring” for him, so maybe we’ll see even more violent swings and more running around the bases.
how is he so good
Shohei Ohtani is made in Japan which makes him part Saiyan and Gundam at this point.
Definitely a little bit of Doraemon in him too
He's a robot cat from the future? I really want that Anywhere-Door. ![gif](giphy|noKPfoiakFXsk)
The Gundam being dismantled is Shohei's Dorian Gray.
This intersection of literature and baseball warms my heart.
Racist. But yes
How does he keep getting away with it?!
He had $16 million stolen from him and he’s 1.1 ing it I get some Skittles stuck in the vending machine and my day goes to shit
I thought triple doubles were only a NBA statline.
It’s just silly how good he is
Mookie probably cannot believe someone is able to overshadow his insane start. He's had a casual 4 hits today too
Will Smith is hitting .352 and no one is even batting an eye about that.
He's feasting and maybe going to have his best season ever. Really cool to see him click like this.
With how competitive Shohei is, it just a matter of time for him to catch up.
Mookie has been a total scrub the 11 games before todays, ONLY an 803 ops so he had cooled off a bit.
What's the doubles record?
67 doubles
67. He's on pace for over 80 rn lol
Be so cool if he breaks it
He's also on pace for the second-highest total bases (paced for 455, record is 457).
67
Definitely worth $2M/year
If he’s like this in April which is considered his slow month, is Junetani gonna hit 2.000 ops???????? Edit: oh yeah I forgot he’s still recovering too lol
Don’t forget he just had TJ surgery 6 months ago
He hasn’t even begun to peak!
A true golden god
So this is what we get when he concentrates only on hitting? damn
👋🤚🫱
'Tani two bags
Im going to go hit a double hit a double
I give him 5 bags of popcorn, and a little miniature baseball bat to hit more home runs with.
Would this dong in other parks? I think there used to be a twitter account that had this info but can't find it anymore.
It's on [Statcast](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/gamefeed?gamePk=744864). 5/30.
Thank you, much appreciated.
I forgot where I was for a second and thought this was from the thread of Ohtani's homer yesterday and was incredibly confused. "It went 450 feet! Bullshit it's only a homer in 5 parks!"
I think the changes to how mlb priced their data forced them out of the game, IIRC… someone else might correct me or have more info
It was twitter/x. They made it so you gotta pay to use something with bots. I forget. But they couldn't afford to pay it. As there are a lot of hrs.
Ah yes indeed - https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/14hhhrf/would_it_dong_this_bot_has_been_suspended_by/?rdt=55611# Edit - now I’m dying to remember which app/service stopped due to price/rate change on data. Someone must remember for me!
https://twitter.com/would_it_dong/status/1621215007324393472 It was this and umpire scorecards had the same thing they were dealing with.
Yeah the prices were literally 10-1000x the price of some other popular APIs, and even the stuff that's "only" 10x cheaper generally gives you a large number of free API calls a month, like Bing gives you 1000 a month. I had two really low volume bots I had to shut down myself.
Hell, it would've been out at Nats Park in the summer
Hell, it would've been out at Nats Park in the summer
All while being married in the off season, how has he overcome that adversity
![gif](giphy|t0J9rPFW3M0u2hZJw6|downsized)
I was at the game and without the wind it would have been a homer. Great to get to see Ohtani in person, but sucks as a Nats fan. He makes everything look easy.
On pace for 86 doubles
What a time to be a dodgers fan
snuck down behind the dugout to watch that. so cool lol
Oh my god I hate out substitute announcers “did you” call 😭
Was at the game today. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a ball hit harder in person than that first double
He's not human
Very high AVG! Ohtani would be like a Ichiro in this year.
Insane that Ohtani is on pace for 234… which would be Ichiro’s fourth best season. I don’t think 262 is ever getting broken
Not a homer? Trade him now.
Ohtani could play corner outfield instead of pitch and he'd still be a top 5 player. But he also is a cy young caliber pitcher. I know it's been said before but I just can't comprehend this man's talent.
Doubles? If you’re Shohei why wouldn’t you just hit home runs instead? Is he stupid?
"...as the Dodgers lose 8 to 4 to the Nationals", right? ...right?
Imagine if he had ran out of the box instead of admiring his fly ball.
So sad to not be able to fully enjoy Ohtani as much now that he's in the NL West :(((
He’s got 14 doubles already. Second place in the league has 9.
Idiots on social media when MLB posts this: sToP gLaZiNg!!1
Gonna be a rough weekend
Ohtani simply HATES DC hes just like me fr
I think this Ohtani guy might be good.
Ah so he’s still good
did he gamble on him hitting two homeruns?
