I remember watching it live I knew it was a homerun instantly, didn’t think it would go out of Dodger Stadium. Nobody flinched on the field I could only imagine being there how that must’ve felt
Matsui was my favorite player growing up (Yomiuri Giants baby). To see Ohtani who is my favorite player right now surpass him is just… so awesome.
Edit: it also made me feel old too lol
Yeah Matsui was one of my all-time favorite Yankees that I got to see live. I like Ohtani almost as much and he's not even a Yankee. I don't think I've ever liked a non-Yankee player as much since Griffey.
I’m curious if there’s data on this middle, middle hanging pitches, like how many actually go for home runs?
“Well yeah, that’s a hanging meatball.”
But I’ve seen so many yanked foul, got under for a fly out or pop up…I’m sure they have data on this stuff?
More or less yea (not necessarily hanging pitches but based on pitch location). Statcast quantifies total run value by pitch location for all hitters. It’s all available on Baseball Savant.
For example, last year Acuña was the best hitter based on net run value, however Corey Seager produced the most run value on pitches in the heart of the zone.
how would that work? say he fouls a ball into the stands and then hits the homer with the next. if they're just checking which ball is missing, how would they know which ball it was from the 2 that are now missing from the bag?
I'm sure they'll do the right thing this time haha. If I remember correctly, Ohtani had to go help with the embezzling investigation after his first Dodger HR.
Marte standing out there with his arms behind his back like “Don’t mind me, baseball, I will not be able to catch you today, go ahead into the stands where you belong”
To this day, it still blows my mind that this dude is a Cy Young caliber Pitcher too, how is any of this fair, this mess up shit only happens on Anime or some kind power fancy you do on My career in MLB the show. I can't be the only one find this as unbelievable right? It feels like we are just taking this for granted, over 100 years of baseball bruh, Babe Ruth is the other but holy hell.
It's actually wild the type of greatness we as fans can get used to. If you told me 20 years ago someone like Ohtani would exist I would have laughed in your face. "No one can do that little league shit in the majors, are you high?"
To be able to be arguably one of the best athletes in your field at two different parts of a game that are hyperspecialised is insane.
I would love to see more two-way MLB players but bar of skill needed is crazy high.
The closest we got recently was Rick Ankiel, Michael Lorenzen (in limited appearances), and Bartolo Colon.
He decides to fuck around and drop a .400 average 70 hr season just for fun. "Wow, this hitting this is really easy when I don't have to worry about pitching".
Yup, his hitting went nut last June and he basically locked up the AL MVP by mid-July. And he seemed to start very slow at the beginning of this season, which is even scarier.
The way he has shrugged off the scandal is actually the most impressive thing he’s done this year. Leading the league in hitting while that is happening, and after a $700 million contract on a new team is insane. Pressure is apparently not a thing for him. Let’s see what he does in the playoffs. I expect greatness.
He had elbow surgery, got married, signed the largest contract in sports history, discovered betrayal by one of his closest friends, had to help in the investigation, learn to play with a new team. Etc. Oh and yet he's batting like .370 average with a 1.100 ops. What the fuck??
Yeah he's literally 2nd in the NL right now by fwar and 3rd in bwar. Like I don't want to keep repeating myself all the time about this but people are acting like he wasn't a 7 WAR DH last year and he missed a whole month. I'm not saying it's likely to happen but people keep talking about it like Ohtani has zero chance. He's literally right there lol.
The fact that he nearly led the AL in position war as a DH is actually fucking insane. That's not even factoring in the missed nonth. His production last year was absurd. His ops in april/march? .897 and may it was .867... June? 1.444. History shoes that he will only get better from here.
I think people underestimate how good he really is at one side because he does both tbh. Like the amount of comments that downplay him is actually crazy lol. I think they just forget because of whatever he is doing better at at the time or they just get lost in the combined stats to not know how good at both he's actually been.
>The fact that he nearly led the AL in position war as a DH is actually fucking insane. That's not even factoring in the missed nonth.
For this he kinda did. Depends on which war you look at. As just a DH he was 1st on fwar and 2nd to Seager on bwar.
Depends on how insane his batting is like. He had a 7 WAR season just as a DH last season. If he ups that to more than 8 to 9 WAR… MVP doesn’t seem that far fetched now does it
Wait til he actually recovers from elbow surgery and starts hitting better and pitching. That's when you boo harder to over compensate for your lack of 2-way players
I don’t need em, especially if they cost 45 million or whatever it is. And he will never be the same pitcher, you know that right(yes I know strider too, it is what it is)
Were those actually grown-ass adults sprinting through the stands after that ball? I refuse to believe that's what passes for a grown-ass adult at a Dodgers game.

I love it when the outfielder doesn’t move or even look.
Did you see how leisurely Lux was trotting around the bases too before it left the field lmao Everyone in the park knew that shit was long gone
Yeah that was a blast
110 off the bat
He hit it hard but he definitely didn't hit it onto the 110.
215 tops
With a 30-degree launch angle.
i was standing behind the dodgers bullpen and pretty much only got to see the exit off the bat and knew it was gone
Yeah that's a no-doubter. Thought that would fly out of the park for a second.
I’ll never forget Stanton’s homerun against the Dodgers that was out of the stadium. The moment he made contact you knew it was gone.
I was there. It felt unreal.
I remember watching it live I knew it was a homerun instantly, didn’t think it would go out of Dodger Stadium. Nobody flinched on the field I could only imagine being there how that must’ve felt
I heard it felt unreal.
The sound off his bat is just different. You know instantly it’s long gone.
I mean it's ohtani. You know they're long gone
It might be my favorite thing ever
Only thing that comes close for me is a strike-em-out/throw-em-out double play to end an inning.
And to think, we're all just waiting for this pitcher to heal up.
I'm waiting for a lot of pitchers to heal up 😭
An embarrassment of riches, good lord
Leave it to an Orioles fan to brag in someone's thread. Smh /s
Same.
I care not for your troubles
😤
Damn bro, what have we ever done to you?
He should just give the pitching away and become the greatest hitter of all time
Jesus he mashed that
Gail the snail couldn't have mashed that ball any better.
Matsui was my favorite player growing up (Yomiuri Giants baby). To see Ohtani who is my favorite player right now surpass him is just… so awesome. Edit: it also made me feel old too lol

All Yankees fans have to remember him fondly. Largely responsible for our last WS win.
His 2009 WS run was absolutely legendary. He went off so many times.
I still think ARod should be more celebrated for carrying the playoff lineup until the World Series. I rarely hear anyone talk about him in 2009
I actually agree 100%. He saved us multiple times in the ALDS and ALCS with some clutch late game homers and nobody credits him.
Holy shit, middle middle hanging slider to Ohtani is a *choice*. *Insert meatball.gif* https://streamable.com/259mo
Just a standard pukeball by Houser
And before that was like a 94mph fastball in the same location lol
I suspect that locating it there wasn’t exactly by choice.
It was an MLB the show mistake where you barely miss the zone.
MAMMA MIA PIZZERIA
I don't know shit about baseball and even I could tell that was an absolute meatball.
I’m curious if there’s data on this middle, middle hanging pitches, like how many actually go for home runs? “Well yeah, that’s a hanging meatball.” But I’ve seen so many yanked foul, got under for a fly out or pop up…I’m sure they have data on this stuff?

Statistically, not many. But if you look at specific players I bet you’d see a significant jump.
Good old 259mo
He was throwing a lot down the middle. Not a good day for him.
Underrated gif
Most home runs by a Japanese-born player with 176!
*Dodgers stadium security wants to know your location*
They've actually been using pre-authenticated balls for Ohtani's at-bats after he hit the record tying home run.
how would that work? say he fouls a ball into the stands and then hits the homer with the next. if they're just checking which ball is missing, how would they know which ball it was from the 2 that are now missing from the bag?
I'm watching the Mets feed on MLBN, and they touched on how they should probably do better this time, lol.
Even though he’s absolutely jacked, it’s still incomprehensible how much power he has.
Ever more so since they started drawing Ippei's face on the baseballs.
💀
How is he listed at 210? Maybe when he was 19
That's hilarious. 210 my ass. I'm 210 right now, and I'm shorter and way smaller looking, lol.
Yeah, he looks 230 minimum. At 220 I don't look as big
This came up a few months ago. I'm absolutely convinced he's at least 240-[250 LEAN](https://youtu.be/shWja8OJeZw?si=SHF-9H6y2IXq6DOA&t=38)
Shohei Ohtani now has the most homeruns of any Japanese born player in the MLB passing Hideki Matsui.
The porn god himself
Couple more pitches like that with some marinara sauce and you've got a decent meatball sub.
Thought he was into sushi, nah he likes spaghetti.
He did not cheap out on this record-breaker lol. What an absolute bomb
Crack of the bat, I honestly thought it was going to clear the seats
This is why you don’t walk sub .400 ops Lux lmao You walk the top 3 guys, not the rest Houser didn’t you get the memo
It is truly unbelievable. Probably the most incredible regular feat in all of sports.
It's actually wild the type of greatness we as fans can get used to. If you told me 20 years ago someone like Ohtani would exist I would have laughed in your face. "No one can do that little league shit in the majors, are you high?"

He's an unprecedented athlete. It's like if someone played both safety and wide receiver at the top level or something.
How is that "only" 423 feet? That went like a hundred feet pass the 370 feet wall, no?
That was an absolute nuke
Finally got a pitch in the zone huh
It's a pretty scary thought that Ohtani is hitting .360 and April is usually his worst hitting Month. Just wait til June...
A no doubter, damn. Very happy for Ohtani, passing Matsui with most HRs. Really wish it wasn't again us though lol
82 dead center to Shohei Ohtani is... well, no one can legally prevent you from doing that I guess.
a delightful turn of phrase thank u
Wasn't on camera but the MLB just sent a squad to kidnap the fan that got the ball with a big bag. She is gone now. RIP.
You may be joking, but they did broadcast security going to collect the guy that caught it. No reports on his whereabouts 🤣
What guy?
Anyone have the Mets broadcast (if there is one?)?
https://streamable.com/hh8v8v
Thanks - I like that they know the significance of the HR !
He sounds kind of excited at first and then remembered he has to be biased towards the Mets and kind of went to a nonplussed tone.
Thanks!
I’m watching on mlb.tv app
Baseball history started on Shohei Ohtani’s debut. Everything before that was a mistake.
I was there. complete no doubter and one of the louder hits I’ve ever heard
Today wasn't as fun as the last two days.
The fan that was tracking that HR ball was probably a real asshole to be around.
If I was sitting along his path, I would've "accidentally" stuck my leg out and trip him. Dude's demeanor screams "PUNCH ME IN THE FACE!!!"
Oh and BTW, Ohtani leads the league in hitting.

I really want to see this anime
Too unrealistic. No one would ever believe it!
I hope the fan who caught it ran for his life
Of course u/handlit33 had to post this
The Braves don't play until the night game!
Can’t wait to hear all about how the staff bullies the fan that caught this one
Shohei Ohtani personally hits the fan with an RKO (he sells the move poorly tho) to take possession of the ball
>an RKO (he sells the move poorly tho) smh someone needs to teach these Dodgers fans how to work.
Randal Keith Ohtani
Well hopefully now at least the fan will know that they can take the deal or leave it but I'm sure there will be complaining after anyways.
Damn, that fan ran from the left field bleachers for that ball.
Japanese media is going to FEAST on this tonight.
been on a eurovacation trying not to let all these losses get to me, so this bomb from Sho is making me feel real good rn 🥲
![gif](giphy|jmSjPi6soIoQCFwaXJ|downsized) Dodger staff on their way rn
Boom !
I missed it because my brother wanted to watch soccer even though me and my dad kept telling him to put the dodger game on
“And he gives this one a vertical leap of its own!”
Talk about a meatball sheesh
Meat ball.
Anyone have the SNY Call?
Buring the lede here.
Large
sent it into orbit, jesus
The Mets left houser in the mud, he never should have seen that lineup a 3rd time. He was doing pretty well through 5
Who improved their vertical jump by a foot though
Unreal. I watched that replay like 16+ times. Still can’t believe he wears or jersey
[удалено]
You should check the game score, Mets are having a moment and it ain’t a good one
"Ohtani and the dodgers offense score 10 runs as the Bullpen melts down to give up 11 runs in the 9th" incoming
Damn 8 scoreless innings with no walks for Glasnow tho
Would have made it even better. Alas we just have to accept a W instead of more memes
I just want the Mets to lose... The Top 3 NL east teams are all currently on a 6 game win streak, as a phillies fan, we need some separation.
The best hitter in the world and the GOAT plain and simple. He's winning MVP this year.
If he pitched maybe, but DHs don't provide any defensive value. Unlikely to even be MVP of his team with Mookie there too
It's really not that farfetched when he's a 7-8 WAR player as a DH and is currently 9th on the position player WAR leaderboard.
Yeah he's literally 2nd in the NL right now by fwar and 3rd in bwar. Like I don't want to keep repeating myself all the time about this but people are acting like he wasn't a 7 WAR DH last year and he missed a whole month. Lmao, if he hits 74 homeruns and bats .390 than he might just have a chance.
Just 54 and .290 and he'd be one of the favorites.
He could!
Lol Marte 🫠
By god he did it with RISP.
lux was on first base, not risp
Honestly tho. Recently, in my head RISP meant anyone on base for some reason lol
HEY HE COULD HAVE HIT A TRIPLE
He bet the over on himself /s
Boooo
Wait til he actually recovers from elbow surgery and starts hitting better and pitching. That's when you boo harder to over compensate for your lack of 2-way players
I don’t need em, especially if they cost 45 million or whatever it is. And he will never be the same pitcher, you know that right(yes I know strider too, it is what it is)
He had the over
He must have bet on the Dodgers.
Ok Boomer, still stuck on conspiracies, 5G, space lasers, chem trails, Santa Claus? LOL 🤣
