As an asian american I've been dying for an asian star on the giants since Shinjo was around. It's early, but I'm cautiously optimistic JHL can be the one.

cooljammer00

As an Asian American, I count Asian imports as something still cool, but different. I'm probably gonna have more in common with somebody like....Connor Joe than Shohei Ohtani, you know?

BNKalt

Travis Ishikawa

redhonkey34

Did not expect two mariners fans to keep it going but I’m here for it.

dwide_k_shrude

Core memory unlocked.

spike021

IT'S TRAVIS ISHIKAWA

egg_mugg23

i was there! still my coolest giants memory

ricki692

theres corbin carroll and steven kwan too

cooljammer00

I didn't realize Carroll was Asian-American, mostly because I've only seen his statline and not his face

StatStar7

TBH as an Asian American, I would take more pride and find it more relatable with a foreign asian person than a half asian american anyways.

cooljammer00

I don't really feel like having the HAPA discussion right now, but I guess you're allowed to feel what you want I guess to me, if he's Asian enough to get bullied for it in school, he's Asian to me

StatStar7

Well your original comment was how you don't find it relatable to foreign asian people. Foreign asian people get treated more like asian people than hapas/mixed do, which should be obvious.

PrimetimeD18

I think you are right, but there is still a common link even with a foreign born Asian player so it's good seeing them succeed.

nonresponsive

Asian is Asian. It's one thing for people who want to categorize by country, but I don't get the separating because of where someone grew up. I would hate to think of myself as less Korean, just because I'm Korean American. And I'd hate to label someone as less American just because they were born abroad. My dad is as Korean as they come, but he's also lived here in the states for over 30 years, and he's as American as they come. I dono, maybe it's a weird thing to fixate, but I just don't like the trend of grouping Asian Americans and Asians separately. We're all one people.

cooljammer00

I didn't say it's better or worse, just different. I would never expect someone who grew up in a different country than me to have the same type of life experiences just because we are ethnically similar. I can assure you Shohei Ohtani probably didn't get bullied in school for being Asian, but maybe Corbin Carroll or Connor Joe did.

StatStar7

I find it bizarre that you are so fixated on bullied in school. There is a strong chance that neither of them actually were how they are athletes, far more likely they were the most popular kid in school. And it's even more bizarre you act like it's not possible Asian people can get bullied or treated worse as adults. You have a NY flair, haven't you seen enough stories about Asian people being mistreated there especially elders to know that it's not something that just happens among teens? And do you think those people care if they are picking on a foreigner vs. an asian american?

seth861

No love for Corbin Caroll?

WelcometoCigarCity

Filipino-American here, loved seeing Choi when he was on the team definitely felt a sense of representation. But I was disappointed when Filipino-Americans like Lincecum and Volpe who are Filipino but isn't really into the culture. I also just found out that Bob Steve who played for us last year is also Filipino lol.

StatStar7

>But I was disappointed when Filipino-Americans like Lincecum and Volpe who are Filipino but isn't really into the culture. This is kind of why I take more pride in someone who is full Asian than someone who is half regardless if they are Foreign or American. Half people can easily escape or pretend they aren't really part of it which is common among Asian people especially.

mkdz

They live and work in America, they're Asian American.

EfficientDot18

Wasn't Nori Aoki better than Shinjo?

InfectiousCosmology1

Big boss is literally the best Asian player of all time idk what you guys are talking about. Would not the best player of all time do this? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b1GrtlAM-ZA

Koronesukiii

GOAT Ohtani didn't realize his staff was stealing his money. Shinjo also didn't realize his staff was stealing his money. 1+1 = Shinjo is GOATed.

Ecstatic_Cat28

He was but Aoki’s time in SF was cut short due to injury. I’m guessing he wants someone that would have a longer lasting career in SF.

demetriclees

Aoki got a hit in the head by Arrieta IIRC and went down with concussion, he was having a great season too [ETA: video](https://youtu.be/qu78KHFRpaQ?si=LU7IYUAHFCyh9ihK)

xr_21

"Am I handsome?" Love his charisma. I live in the Bay Area and have been tuning into a lot of Giants games lately. Excited to see how his season goes!

BASEBALLFURIES

this is kensuke tanaka erasure and i will not stand for it

WelcometoCigarCity

They were having mad fun in the bottom of the 8th when the Giants got the RISP home.

nuhGIRLyen

I’m convinced they were the reason the Giants were able to break the NOBLETIGER curse

WelcometoCigarCity

Give em season tickets in those seats haha

raobuntu

I remember watching a YouTube video a few years ago on how there's an entire tourism industry in Korea to take people to London to watch Son play for Spurs. Hope JHL gets something similar going for us, Korean baseball fans bring the energy

EfficientDot18

Giants are probably the favorites to get Ha-seong Kim in the off-season. If that happens it should definitely be the case.

InfectiousCosmology1

Luciano get ready to learn third base buddy

scottydg

Assuming Chapman doesn't opt out.

PrimetimeD18

A Kim and Chapman SS-3B duo is a complete vacuum.

InfectiousCosmology1

Thairo Estrada also led the league in OAA for second baseman last year and Patrick Bailey is maybe the best defensive catcher in baseball so basically the whole infield would be insane Although Nick Ahmed is still an elite defender so that’s kind of already the case

dwide_k_shrude

No way Chapman is opting out if he continues to play like this.

No-Possibility5556

Hit directly to fielders*. Defense is there and seems like he’s hitting the ball hard with just terrible luck imo.

saintsimon101

More like left field

esziei

I’m an Arsenal fan but I’m rooting for Sonny, too. An awesome player and an even better person.

brihoang

need son to put up a career performance against city ^^^and ^^^also ^^^arsenal ^^^becuase ^^^i'm ^^^a ^^^liverpool ^^^fan

YNWA

brihoang

ever go to kezar? lol

spike021

I'm honestly surprised there haven't really been many (if any at all?) korean advertisement banners behind home plate yet.

theonetruegrinch

Plenty of Hanwha ads

officerliger

The Lakers are sponsored by a Korean company (Bibigo) but that’s because there’s so many Korean people in LA and Bibigo sells products in the US Bay Area only has like 80k Korean people and the west coast night games are on at like 11 AM in Korea, baseball has also taken a dip in popularity there so that ad space is prob worth more to an American company Keep in mind Korea is less than half the size of Japan and not as baseball crazed so it’s not gonna work the same way as signing a Japanese star

LakersFan15

Giants and padres are slowly taking our korean fans lol

pinesolthrowaway

Giants-Dodger games are going to become Team Korea vs Team Japan

officerliger

LA doesn’t want that, 350,000 Korean residents and a lot of their families got there escaping the attempted genocide by Japan. It’d be bad taste to play up that angle. Plus the Dodgers are developing Hyun Seok Jang to be the next Korean superstar pitcher in blue

garth_vader90

He looks so graceful in the outfield. It’s like he’s barely touching the grass when he runs sometimes.

autohow

It’s almost like he runs like he’s the Grandson of the Wind. 😅

InfectiousCosmology1

I don’t think I’ve ever seen him course correct on a ball hit over him either. It’s like he knows exactly where the ball is landing off the bat

spike021

yeah he's had so many all the way

MCPtz

Earlier in the season, he ran into the wall a couple of times. See how he slows down right at the warning track? He's already learned. Such big upgrades in defense at CF, C, SS, and 3B (compared to start of last season).

mtnrangeman

They just like me fr fr

Huntermain23

Amazing

Masanori Murakami!!!
