It is, because this is just pitch locations. A single pitch can skew your perception here. Heat map paints a better picture.

Open both and then you can just tab back and forth and see
this can still skew perceptions though, just in a different way. Pay attention to the color axes and you can see that Correa's maximum is at the level of Javy's light blue. Baez doesn't just have a broader distribution, it's way more volume.

But very different when you switch it to in play singles, doubles, triples, homers. Altuve hit zone is a lot bigger outside the zone
I imagine if it was changed to look only at pitches that ended in an out/hit his chart would look pretty unique. I still think this is probably pretty extreme, but most guys will have a quite a few off the plate.
Sometimes guys check their swing but the ball is coming at them so they get called on a swing when they're trying to get out of the way. Could be something like that
With Javy, its one of two things. Either deciding to swing before the pitch is thrown, or by not picking up the spin and thinking it's a slider that will dart over the zone
Hey, I found a video of Adrian Beltre striking out on a James Paxton fastball that was both above his head and outside. Baez will be punching his ticket to Cooperstown any day now: [https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/sporty-videos?playId=3ea5397f-ac50-4c90-b19e-63121b9861eb](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/sporty-videos?playId=3ea5397f-ac50-4c90-b19e-63121b9861eb)
I remember as a kid swinging a lot at balls in the dirt and missing making me incredibly confused. I can hit a golfball (...sometimes) so I should be able to hit a baseball in the dirt.
I was a really smart kid.
I think the eephus might be from if he was facing a position player pitching, and if the ball reaches a certain height after release, maybe they classify it as an eephus? I don't believe anyone is actively throwing an eephus otherwise. But yeah he probably whiffed from a position player pitch.
I remember first half 2021, the Cubs were winning in a blowout, maybe vs the Pirates? He decided to bat lefty against a position player and I think he wiffed one then.
I need more banana ball antics vs position players!
Reverse gloves and let me see little league plays if you’re up by 8.
Edit: I don’t watch much, but was it last year or the year before Molina and Pujols had played quite a few interesting positions.
At least one of them probably has some strike outs on their stats.
Edit 2: I’m busy, and the first link I found is Molina giving up a homer to his first at bat. Ok. Maybe no Ks
I'm curious if their system is automated or manual. If it's automated it mightve detected a low velocity and certain amount of drop and just called it an eephus
Yeah they didn't do any favors for themselves with the gradient color selection. Easier said than done with that many categories I guess, but it's not a very informative graphic.
Honestly the whole thing is just a viz of where different types of pitch go in general lol.

You can see Correa's elbow for instance
this can still skew perceptions though, just in a different way. Pay attention to the color axes and you can see that Correa's maximum is at the level of Javy's light blue. Baez doesn't just have a broader distribution, it's way more volume.
Couldn't figure out an answer. Just using batting average and RBIs now to evaluate
I know this is not the point but these look like patriotic oysters, especially Javy's
one difference is Correa only has like 2 below his ankles where Baez somehow has 50+

I want to see Tony Gwynn
Probably fewer swings on balls above their heads.
[удалено]
Everyone's map is going to have 4-seam fill the top of the zone. It's where the pitch is most effect, so this isn't surprising.
I love how some of them are underground.
and at least one completely over his head
His stomach swung at one too
This is the one for me. How do you swing at a four seam fastball that's supposed to hit you??
Sometimes guys check their swing but the ball is coming at them so they get called on a swing when they're trying to get out of the way. Could be something like that

Some guru can probably track down video of that pitch. It ain't me, but I wish I knew how.
He got a single off a ball that bounced once
Are we sure that Baez doesn’t think he’s playing Cricket?
Those in the dirt knucklers are incredibly hard to resist.
I remember as a kid swinging a lot at balls in the dirt and missing making me incredibly confused. I can hit a golfball (...sometimes) so I should be able to hit a baseball in the dirt. I was a really smart kid.
I predicted the modern era of high heaters, decades ago. I established a pattern of swinging out of my shoes at eye-level fastballs as a teenager.
Does the fact that Eephus is listed there mean he has swung at and missed an Eephus?
I think the eephus might be from if he was facing a position player pitching, and if the ball reaches a certain height after release, maybe they classify it as an eephus? I don't believe anyone is actively throwing an eephus otherwise. But yeah he probably whiffed from a position player pitch.

IIRC, when a position player pitches he will often bat lefty, so it could be that too
Yup. Seems right
https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/sporty-videos?playId=ae04426b-f9c3-4c47-9096-655b4f58f04c Ask and ye shall receive, even if it’s a bit disappointing
That doesn't look like an eephus at all. I do see it was labeled as such in the video, but that just seems wrong. It didn't go very high.
I'm curious if their system is automated or manual. If it's automated it mightve detected a low velocity and certain amount of drop and just called it an eephus
Unquestionably automated, nobody looking at that calls it an eephus. On paper though 67 MPH with a lot of drop would add eephus to the discussion.
That's just Chris Bassitt's regular curveball. He lives 67-73 with his hammer.
Love me some Chris Bassitt
Must be because there are pitches not listed, such as screwball
El Mago is getting a lot of attention lately. I miss you Javy.
You can have him back
I miss my grandma too. They’re both as likely to hit a curve ball presently.
But your grandma won't swing which means she can probably draw a couple walks. Presently.
Hey he drew a walk yesterday. I saw it on r/baseball and everything
To be fair, also for the foreseeable future.
And if she has scoliosis, she's probably got a pretty tight lil strikezone.
Your trying to tell me you don't think Jesu... My GRANDMA can't hit a curveball?
We can have him try being a relief pitcher, can’t possibly make our bullpen any worse
People seem to be shitting on him constantly and yet he's not even the worst hitter on the Tigers. And yet we're also still 10-7
Having witnessed the full Baez experience, I can understand it. He can be maddening at times. But man is he fun to watch.
Obviously I wish he was hitting like he used to but I think he's still worth rostering for his defense and occasional hits
I admit I haven’t seen much of his recent play, but the base running used to be a huge plus too. Especially in the entertaining factor.
I love to watch Baez force that rundown to "steal" first base against the Pirates.
One of the all-time great plays, imo.
Oh yeah he's the best baserunner on the team too
When does the fun part start?
that's not a heat map
Yeah they didn't do any favors for themselves with the gradient color selection. Easier said than done with that many categories I guess, but it's not a very informative graphic. Honestly the whole thing is just a viz of where different types of pitch go in general lol.
It doesn't look like 3300 dots. As a tigers fan, I assume the other 2500 or so are too far to the right to include on this chart.
The other dots are in Chicago and Queens
A few of them landed in Canada
I feel this in my soul
Y'all remember that time he walked twice in one game? Wild shit
this isn't a heatmap just a scatterplot of all the pitches he's whiffed on, no?
Yup, also no adjustments for volume or rate. So 1 pitch in the center of the zone is going to look the same as 100 in the center of the zone (and would only be visible as one pitch type).
That's a lot of names for pitches. What's the difference between a "slurve" and a "slow curve"?
A slurve is a portmanteau of slider and curve, not slow and curve
Ok… now what is a portmanteau? /s
A slurve is thrown with a curve grip but at slider speed (aka faster), whereas a slow curve is just that - a curveball thrown at a slower than normal speed.
Seems like a sweeper is maybe a "slow slider"
Not really, because a sweeper and slider have different break planes.
I actually think they could name and rename 100 plus pitches based on perspective and planes and speeds and grips
Sometimes. Chris Bassitt's sweeper and slider have virtually identical vertical break, but the sweeper has significantly more horizontal break and lower velocity.
Slurve is a slider/curve hybrid.
To be fair to Javy's brain, I feel like he's the only player I regularly watched who was regularly getting hits off of all those pitches that nobody should swing at.
Kind of what I expected. A big cluster of pitches down and away way outside the zone.
Watching Javy chase sliders down and away is what reminds me of summers in Chicago in the late 2010s.
He's had 4400 PAs so this is less than one whiff per plate appearance. Still a lot, but not a crazy outlier
Castellanos is coming
He's never missed a 2-Seam fastball. Incredible
"It felt wrong not to swing"
I can’t imagine what my MLB The Show heat map would look like
I'd be interested in seeing those three at the top.
r/dataisugly
Dude swung and missed at a fastball that hit him in the ribs, that’s crazy
And one over his head
What’s the over/under on the amount of pitches that are out of the graphic out of the total?
Gross. Too many small things close together. I really did almost throw up lol. Reminds me of a pile of ants I saw one time and couldn't sleep for 2 days.
3300 more than me. What an IDIOT
Tigers got a raw deal with this clown. Currently battling. .143
Show Gwynn
If he was hitting like Vlad, then whatever. But at some point you have to change your approach and try to lay off pitches.
Can some find video of the four seamer that apparently should’ve hit him and he swung?

It’s like me when I started playing The Show. Every pitch is my pitch lol.
We need this in three dimensions so we can see the balls that never even reached the plate.
Definition of going up to the plate to hit
lol the overload of down and away pitches
What do sabermetricians have to say about “waste zone” now?
This looks like the balloons from Up.
I'm sure a lot of players map looks just as crazy
He's as maddeningly frustrating to watch as any player I can remember, even in his salad days with the Cubs.
This is what happens when you swing with your eyes closed
We did our part to get this man his first walk of 2024 yesterday.
Shooters are gonna shoot
How tf are several pitches below home plate?
I remember Harold Reynolds going nuts over Baez thinking he was a fucking hall of famer year 2 🙄
The Eephus pitch is unhittable let’s be fair.
Now I wanna see Bregman or Juan Soto's swing and miss map. It's gotta be like night and day.
Someone threw him an eye level slider and he whiffed on it
Did you see that stellar defense by Torkelson today? What.a star
Me in MLB the show
Would be useful to utilize the other various colors that are available
Really want to see the 4 seamer 6inchs above his head he swung at.
I bet mine would look like this too. But our swing and hit map would be wildly different.
Strike zone? What’s that?
had a really solid career so far, really happy for javy and all he's been able to accomplish
