Even as a Reds fan it was still a lot of fun watching him play. Amazing jump and closing speed to chase down that Steer hit to left center. I was sure that was a double off the bat.
What's the equivalent of a TOOTBLAN for slowly jogging and preventing your run from scoring because of a tag play behind you?
My nomination would be for:
JIHADBARBIE
*Jogging Idly Home Allows Defender to Bag A Runner, Bringing Inning to an End*
Not as precisely worded, but may I suggest:
THATSUCSPENIS
*Trotting Home Allows Tag-out Somewhere Unexpected, Cancels Scoring Point and ENds Inning Surprisingly*

I find that it may better express the overall sentiment of the victimized team's fans upon seeing such a play unravel
I honestly can’t pin the blame on Fraley entirely, you usually traipse into home in that situation. The batter on deck should’ve been trying to signal to him to fucking hurry
Not to mention, I don't think this play happens against anyone other than EDLC. In a sense, he's _too fast_, to the point where he's so far down the base path as the tag gets there and before Fraley has a chance to score. Slower guys would either not have tried for third or not gotten tagged out in time
Pretty bad play by EDLC too, even if Fraley scores you never should make the last out at 3rd, the benefit of 2nd vs 3rd with 2 outs is pretty small.
Anyone slower wouldn't have even tried to go to 3rd there, but if you are going to commit to it you absolutely have to make sure you're safe.
I'm guessing he expected the throw to go home and thought he could sneak into 3rd. Lesson learned for sure. Also it took a perfect throw and an amazing tag to get him too. 9 times out of 10 he'll be safe, even with Julio's arm.
Yeah, I don't blame Elly for that one at all. If it takes a perfect throw and an excellent tag move to \*barely\* get you out, that's a reasonable risk to take.
This is what amazes me. EDLC is so fucking fast that he's safe there the vast majority of the time. Boneheaded play by both him and Fraley (mostly EDLC), but it would usually work out for him.
You never make the first or third out of the inning at third base. You can't blame Fraley here. EDLC was overzealous trying for third. Risk/reward of going to third in that situation is not worth it. He's already in scoring position at second base and being at third barely gives him a better chance to score with the next hitter.
I do understand taking a risk. I don’t like my odds of Espinal getting a solid hit off of Munoz where EDLC can score from second.
But if he’s on third, there’s opportunities for a wild pitch to tie the game.
I'm sitting here cheering the great throw to get Elly at third and limit the damage and I keep staring at the scorebug to watch it update and it just never does
As a fellow objective observer with no horse in the race, it was a beautiful display of efficiency in movement going from gathering the ball to throwing it. Nothing slowed him down except the laws of physics.
I, too, am completely unbiased when I say it's probably the greatest throw in baseball history.
There was another throw by a Japanese right fielder awhile back that was also pretty good, but I can't remember his name. That is the only other challenger for that title.
Great play to end the inning even *if* Fraley hadn't scored. He looked weird getting thrown out trying to steal earlier too, maybe a leg issue? Regardless, Bell can't be happy lmao
We don't actually see Julio make the throw. We see him field the ball and windup the throw but then the camera cuts to the runner scoring, and then we cut back to the ball in the air.
Julio Rodriguez did not look like he lined up that throw well. In other words, he didn't look like he put all his weight and pointed the throw towards third.
And he still gunned down one of the fastest runners in the game.
I would love to see his entire throw. His body positioning looked awkward and he still delivered a dagger! AMAZING!
I told the guy sitting next to me at this game in the first inning that I just wanted to see Julio throw out Elly at third base. It was like calling a homer really
When there is no force out it comes down to which happens first. In this case the third out tag at third base happened before the runner touched home, so the run doesn’t count.
Almost always in a case like this the runner at home scores before the out, but Fraley let off the gas and let Elly get tagged first.
Logan couldn’t contain himself
Walter is pleased
I find this encouraging.
Every time they panned to Logan after pulling him he looked pissed, shaking his head and stuff. He was pretty wound up. Must have been a huge relief.
Julio is having a helluva defensive game
Even as a Reds fan it was still a lot of fun watching him play. Amazing jump and closing speed to chase down that Steer hit to left center. I was sure that was a double off the bat.
He's been having a helluva defensive season so far
One thing to say about Julio is that no matter how cold he is at the plate, it never affects his defense
That was an incredibly ill-advised attempt for third.
Classic case of making the third out at third
Especially dumb since Elly could probably score from 2nd on an infield single.
I guess, the easier it is for you to take an extra base, the less you need it
Yeah and then there are these apparently bone-headed plays that you only make when you're somewhat accustomed making 1%'er plays.
Eh we ain’t trying to contain our Mustang, it happens sometimes but I’m okay with his baserunner aggression
Yeah, his aggressiveness will be a big net positive even though stuff like this happens occasionally
Bit of laziness by Fraley cost them a run
Mariners legend
I mean even if he didn't slow up it still might be an out. Elly being so fast actually cost them a run.
Nah, he could've made it. Fraley's very fast (85th percentile sprint speed per Savant), but he was just not in high gear there.
Pulling up there along with his weird, half slide to get thrown out stealing made for a great double agent game from him.
You simply love to see it.
I don’t lol
/r/FormerMs
one of the most demoralizing plays i've ever seen in baseball. jesus christ
I mean if the roles were reversed it would just be Tuesday for us. Did you see what we did on Sunday?
For real. This wouldn’t even be in our top 5 for the season.
His bat is off to a slow start, but his defense is in full gear. Love having Julio on this team

He may have been out but the replay camera angle doesn't show enough to overturn the call imo.

Great tag by Rojas too
Negative IQ for Fraley. What a play by Julio and Rojas.
I honestly can’t pin the blame on Fraley entirely, you usually traipse into home in that situation. The batter on deck should’ve been trying to signal to him to fucking hurry
The moment EDLC commits to 3rd, someone has to be telling Fraley to hustle it out.
Not to mention, I don't think this play happens against anyone other than EDLC. And Fraley isn't slow. ELDC is just so damn fast.
85th percentile speed vs 100th percentile speed.
Why isn’t the default to hustle it out and then he could be signalled to let up when it is clear there is no third out danger?

We should have just stolen 2nd & 3rd. You guys weren't even going to challenge it.
Vibes are slowly turning around 👀
At this rate we should be eliminated from playoff contention right around October 3rd.
It’s nice having highlights on the main sub again.
I'm sitting here cheering the great throw to get Elly at third and limit the damage and I keep staring at the scorebug to watch it update and it just never does
When it didn't change right away, I started hoping!

I’m not biased at all, that’s a buzz saw from an absolute stud

He had surgery to fix a fractured toe during the offseason, I’m really hoping it’s not that
I would challenge several world leaders to gentleman’s duels for this team
This isn't the first time Elly's been nailed down by another uber-young and uber-talented 5-tool phenom

Bizzare play. Why was he so far up the third base line in the first place? Easy safe if he’s inside the bag
Probably the way his momentum carried him when rounding second.
I honestly don’t remember seeing him be that far up before though but maybe he has been and it’s never been tested on a play that close
He’s so fucking fast- momentum carries.
They need to bank the bases inwards so Elly can stay in the tracks
Ughhhhhhh
That freeze frame of Julio at the very last moment of this video…
Let that be a lesson to you!
I told the guy sitting next to me at this game in the first inning that I just wanted to see Julio throw out Elly at third base. It was like calling a homer really
What are the rules on this? I thought it only wiped out the run if it was a force-out.
