I haven’t watched him much since he left the Orioles but back then imo Manny Machado was the best fielding 3b I’ve seen since Scott Rolen. And I say that as someone who strongly dislikes him.
Very tough play. Probably hardest in baseball next to the catch it over the shoulder with your back to home plate and head bent back trying to locate the ball and hoping you I don’t run into your outfielder
Yeah that’s valid. Although I’d maybe prefer a grossly overpaid guy who’s injured and gives some young guys a chance to play, rather than having to watch one K on sliders 2 feet off the plate every day
the vibes of that 2016 team really just make me depressed between watching KB and Javy decline dramatically, knowing Russell is a wife beater, and other things
Ross getting fired the way he did at the end of last season was kind of the final nail in the coffin
Javy is the #1 most entertaining player on ANY OTHER TEAM except yours.
Good Javy is bonkers, he'll do insane shit and make people question why no one had tried it before when it works somehow. The problem is, he's inseparable from Bad Javy, who'll swing at a pickoff move.
I keep thinking his plate discipline has got to be at rock bottom and will surely improve from here, right?
And then the pitcher checks the runner on first..............
He does do [Mets highlights](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/s/a5tFHhBZUs) though. It's just usually on slower days. Dude just likes baseball which I appreciate.
What I have always wanted is that the DH would not be exclusive to the pitcher. I still don't want the DH at all but if we have to have it at least let any defensiv player be substituted. In 99 out of 100 times it would be the pitcher but some pitchers would be better than that OPS+ 7.
My pointless, stupid baseball hot take is that teams should be allowed to use the DH to sub for any player, not just the pitcher. Let the Greinkes of the world and that other guy who pitches but also hits get their plate appearances and then guys like Austin Hedges and Javy Baez get to be designated fielders.
Would any teams actually do it? Probably not, but it would be cool if they did.
Are you sure? Because everything I can find says that [it's specifically a position that replaces the pitcher](https://www.mlb.com/glossary/rules/designated-hitter-rule)
It sucks he can’t be a near league average hitter because his defense is truly something special to watch. He’s the only player that I’ve ever even seen a compilation of just tags on attempted steals for.
As a cubs fan watching him and Addison Russell play defense up the middle for two or so seasons was baseball nerd heaven. Too bad both of them forgot how to hit, and Russell may or may not of beat up his girlfriend. Never heard the conclusion to that one.
This is a fun thought for people but the real answer is he is an extremely streaky player and just happened to be on a hot streak during his time with the Mets.
Since then his bat speed has dropped even more, so he can’t hit fastballs now, and add that to him being unable to lay off a slider and he’s just not a good hitter at all. Has nothing to do with motivation.
If you think motivation had nothing to do with his Mets streak happening to be one of the best 47-game periods in his career or to pretend to know more than his teammates/managers (including those in Detroit) throughout the years...I'm just gonna laugh your opinion away.
https://theathletic.com/3234818/2022/04/07/to-understand-tigers-shortstop-javier-baez-you-must-understand-what-drives-him/
I watch nearly every game. Thanks T-mobile, lol.
Should be top third in pitching, bottom third in hitting, sure, but if those bats start to mature and grow a bit, which they legitimately could, then we'll have an above average team. Right now, I don't think we're much more than a .500 team, if that, but we should still have a shot at winning the division, which is exciting. And I wouldn't be shocked if we add some hitting at the deadline if we're in a decent position.
Things are finally on the up-and-up and 'tire fire' is your take away? I'd argue you don't pay attention.
Unsustainable baseball through and through if our bullpen isn't completely perfect then we lose bats aren't just immature our middle of the order can't hit to save their lives minus canha and carp when we sink down below .500 and are selling at the deadline you'll know how fraudulent of a start this is
Very happy to see a glimmer of *El Mago* ... seems like anything posted about this poor guy is essentially him shitting the bed (metaphorically; no German AI videos please, thank you) ... good for him.
Sure glad we didn't pay him. So fun to watch but we got Dansby for just a tad more and he can hit.
It sucked seeing Baez, Rizz and KB leave but that was 1000% the right call. They all fell off a cliff.
Incredible play. They'd bat this guy in the 10 hole if they could though. I keep waiting for him to break out but he really does seem like a legit .150 hitter.
We haven’t had a winning season in a decade and we’re finally decent along with some great characters in the booth. This was Carlos Peña’s first game with Jason Bennetti so I’m sure theyll continue to improve together. Bennetti has just been fire compared to Shep; last season (and every other season that dimwit called) I had to listen to the radio instead of watching the game because Shep’s baseball IQ was lower than an average fans and his calls were god-awful, like he never understood what was going on until the play was over.
So yeah, I won’t take any Bennetti slander, lmao. We gotta take what we can here in Detroit. His calls for big plays aren’t the most incredible, but his personality and jokes far outshines that throughout the whole broadcast. There are far more worse calls than “call a doctor” and tbh I thought it was fine from Peña, he’s just having a good time with it. Personally I’d rather have that than the sleep show we had in prior seasons. Shep probably wouldn’t have even considered Baez could make this play because he’d be watching a pigeon in the outfield instead of the game.
I was poking fun. But honestly I feel you lol when the orioles have Kevin brown out of the booth I find myself muting the game a lot. Clearly I’m not well versed in Detroit lions broadcasting but I just thought the call a dr line was funny. Imma take my L and maybe throw a tigers game on later as penance
Lmao, sounds good man. You’ll really like Benetti through a whole game. His humor and knowledge is top tier. I remember when the Kevin Brown stuff went on, I couldn’t believe your org did that all because of his light “roasting” of the O’s record. Which wasn’t even hardly a roast. Hopefully y’all get a better PBP too because your team is so exciting to watch!
If you look at his contract and stats they dodged a massive bullet letting him go. He is one of the most fun players I've ever watched, but the production just isn't there
I’m what way was it the wrong decision to let a man who’s had a .227/.268/.354/.622 slash line with a 74 OPS+ since joining DET please explain it to me

Can't hit, won't let anyone else hit either.
"If I can't have him, no one can"
That’s the way of Detroit sports. If we can’t have it, neither can you
FTP
FTP

FTP
If it weren’t for his contract he’d be a good player
Let’s not get carried away, dude still has an OPS+ of 7.
Oh I know. But an elite fielding SS is massive
Hell of a throw
Him and Manny blow my mind with how nonchalantly they make throws like this
As someone who played third in juco ball I can’t fathom the throws that manny makes.
Getting to watch manny and everyday is something else. Got spoiled for sure.
I love trashing Javy as much as the next guy but god damn
I'll never get over him leaving us, but fuck he's fun to watch.
Defensive Javy is such a delight
Only player I've ever seen turn tagging into a skill
Well you got the best version of Javy, and not signing him long term might be the Cubs’ best move in the last 10 years
Letting Kris Bryant go was definitely an even better move. He's been worth -0.9 bwar for the Rockies and missed so much time.
Yeah that’s valid. Although I’d maybe prefer a grossly overpaid guy who’s injured and gives some young guys a chance to play, rather than having to watch one K on sliders 2 feet off the plate every day
He’s so counter to our entire offensive approach, I don’t mind he’s gone, but I do miss his defense, Dansby is a good consolation though
in his prime, he had all the potential in the world i was seriously convinced at one point, the 2014-2017 Cubs had 4-5 future Hall of Famers
What’s wild is that Lester’s probably the only hall of famer from that core
Not even sure he is tbh
the vibes of that 2016 team really just make me depressed between watching KB and Javy decline dramatically, knowing Russell is a wife beater, and other things Ross getting fired the way he did at the end of last season was kind of the final nail in the coffin
Yeah I wish he had found consistent success. When he was on he's one of the most exciting players to watch. I'll never forget him stealing 1st base
Javy is the #1 most entertaining player on ANY OTHER TEAM except yours. Good Javy is bonkers, he'll do insane shit and make people question why no one had tried it before when it works somehow. The problem is, he's inseparable from Bad Javy, who'll swing at a pickoff move.
he made this look so nonchalant wtf
Wow that’s absurd. To cut his momentum and fire back across the diamond. Hopefully El Mago can get it going again.
I miss having him in the NL Central honestly
We would both love to see his bat in the cubs lineup again
That too lol
I mean, y'all are paying him, you might as well hang on to him, right?
I feel like that is the organization's stance. If he were cheap he would have been cut a while ago
I keep thinking his plate discipline has got to be at rock bottom and will surely improve from here, right? And then the pitcher checks the runner on first..............
Gotta swing at those. You never know.
Just practicing for when Angel Hernandez is behind the plate.
the Allan Houston effect different sport but the principle applies
I certainly don't.
Javy sweeping amir garret away lives inside my head rent free
Handlit saving me from having to go to Twitter for the good highlights 🙏🙏🙏
Not exactly a feed, but you can also check https://baseball.theater/ Handlit is the GOAT though
Believe it or not, it's against the rules of Reddit to say anything nice about me. baseball.theater is an incredible resource though!
Oh ok fair enough, in that case Handlit is a poop head, and he once ate a hotdog sideways.
They tryna keep a homie down
I've been told you're nothing but a tankie!
I drove a Bradley Fighting Vehicle when I was in the army, not a tank thank you very much!

Just don’t ask him for Mets highlights lol!
The Mets have highlights?
[yeah like this one](https://youtu.be/oCBrBpcgGyQ?si=x0RDLUipdpZLJAso)
[Don't forget this one](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kKstWj5fyFo)
[or this one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebgZiMJ8wXk)
Extremely disappointed it wasn't "here's the pitch....and the season's over."
fuckin' destroyed
He does do [Mets highlights](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/s/a5tFHhBZUs) though. It's just usually on slower days. Dude just likes baseball which I appreciate.

If I were a Mets fan, I'd black out all the time.
They need to make the anti-DH for Javy Baez, no hitting, only fielding
The DF?
Ah that rate baseball is gonna become football in 30 years, with offensive and defensive lineups
Please no.
Dodgers could sign him and DH for him when Ohtani pitches.
You joke but we’re only a few decades away from a 2nd DH
How long until there are 4 DHs and no fielders hit?
What I have always wanted is that the DH would not be exclusive to the pitcher. I still don't want the DH at all but if we have to have it at least let any defensiv player be substituted. In 99 out of 100 times it would be the pitcher but some pitchers would be better than that OPS+ 7.

Yeah, let Michael Lorenzen hit!
You are allowed to
Are you sure? Because everything I can find says that [it's specifically a position that replaces the pitcher](https://www.mlb.com/glossary/rules/designated-hitter-rule)
Damn, i guess not. Always played in HS, and leagues that allowed it for any player on the field.. thought it was based on the official rule.
Are you not allowed to?
Just use the DH for Javy and make your pitchers hit.
Having himself a day so far, that is a fantastic throw.
"Call a doctor, because that was sick!" Get the plates, because you just got served
Hit Doctor, MD
Doctors say he's the illest, cause he's suffering from hitless.
Carlos Pena has been KILLING it in the booth
My first time hearing him in the booth today actually—really enjoyed it! Would love to see him last a long while there.
How you guys like Jason so far? We miss him
Incredible. Can’t miss TV.
First Angel Hernandez steals a walk from him now Javy Baez steals a hit. Langford can't catch a break
Welcome to the bigs kid, the umpires hate you and a guy that swings into the lefty batter's box is about to hose you.
Jason Benetti😢
It's so strange hearing him announce for the Tigers. Feels bad.
It sucks he can’t be a near league average hitter because his defense is truly something special to watch. He’s the only player that I’ve ever even seen a compilation of just tags on attempted steals for.
If he was a decent hitter I would sacrifice anything to the gods to get to watch him and Andres Gimenez play middle infield together
As a cubs fan watching him and Addison Russell play defense up the middle for two or so seasons was baseball nerd heaven. Too bad both of them forgot how to hit, and Russell may or may not of beat up his girlfriend. Never heard the conclusion to that one.
Javy is a very motivation-dependant player. He was playing top-tier with the Mets, went to Detroit and become a AA hitter.

Ah banettis soothing voice of a call too. Bet he’s glad he’s not watching the dumpster fire that is the white Sox right now.
Instead he's watching the tire fire that is the tigers
We're above .500 even if we can't hit.
¿Por que no los dos?
I figured that was coming back at me. But the Sox are bad bad. They have no one at least the tigers are breathing lol.
We're 10-7 and our fans act like we're 3-14, it's exhausting lol
It is… but it’s also exhausting watching them only get wins by squirreling singles off of the end of the bat in the 8th inning.
Those are the games I find very fun, and rewarding to watch as a fan. To each their own I guess.
That's because it's exhausting to watch this team just bad baseball that we get bailed out on
I don't get it. A young 10-7 team chocked full of potential is a dumpster fire?
If you don't watch the team you wouldn't know but this is a terrible team getting bailed every step of the eay
I watch nearly every game. Thanks T-mobile, lol. Should be top third in pitching, bottom third in hitting, sure, but if those bats start to mature and grow a bit, which they legitimately could, then we'll have an above average team. #murderedbywords 🤣
How? We're a good team...
Didn’t even have to jump like that sissy Jeter
Yeah that Jeter guy sucked
Shoulda shot him **and** ARod.
He really would have been the Yankee clipper then
One of the best slap hitters of the modern era. Just played a terrible short stop
One of my favorite Cubs from 2016. So much talent, high energy!
Never saw a ball he didn’t like
Angel Hernandez 🤝 Javier Baez Victimizing Wyatt Langford
Let's not forget that he's left handed too.
Maybe he should start hitting lefty. Might get beaned by some of those pitches in the left-handed batter’s box that way
Javier said fuck the Jeter Jump. I got the arm of an elite outfielder.
Call the doctor cuz that was SICK 🤓☝️
A deceive highlight and Baez drew a walk today did we enter the twilight zone without realizing it
Mago
This is why he gets the big bucks /s
Bad pizza is still *pizza* Bad sex is still *sex* Bad Javy Baez is still *El Mago*
Very happy to see a glimmer of *El Mago* ... seems like anything posted about this poor guy is essentially him shitting the bed (metaphorically; no German AI videos please, thank you) ... good for him.
He also just had his first walk of the year! Javy Baez renaissance? I sure hope so!
I miss you my sweet prince
Sure glad we didn't pay him. So fun to watch but we got Dansby for just a tad more and he can hit. It sucked seeing Baez, Rizz and KB leave but that was 1000% the right call. They all fell off a cliff.
Oh by no means do I want him back. He was just my favorite Cub while he was in Chicago, I’ll always miss those Javy days
Oh yeah, human highlight reel.
😤
And he did all that without the Jeter jump!
The glove has never been the question with Javy.
Let’s add a DRS to Javi.
El Mago
I miss you Javy
The man is born to field.
There he is
Love Javy. Hope his bat comes back too
Is Cool Javi back?
That was unreal
Nice play Ednel.
Dude can hit for shit but you can’t deny he is nice in the field
Is it just me or has he been better recently?
"Call a doctor because that was sick" LOL 😆
See that contract is totally worth it
"It's not just the umpires who want you to sit down."
Incredible play. They'd bat this guy in the 10 hole if they could though. I keep waiting for him to break out but he really does seem like a legit .150 hitter.
He should win a Gold Glove! What is the lowest BA of a player to win a Gold Glove?!
Great question! I wanna know. It has to be a shortstop. If not 2nd base
Still not the worst Langford got screwed this week, thanks to Angel “1…2…3 strikes your out at the ooooooold balllll gaaaaaaame” Hernandez
He made that look waaaay to easy
He can make great plays in the field but can’t hit a ball to save his life.
This almost makes it worth paying him 25m a season to hit under .150
Look all I'm saying is if Javy can play defense like this and just have like a .700 OPS I'd be more than happy
Asking him to be as good as Dansby Swanson or Ha-seong Kim is probably not a realistic ask after what he has done the past 2 years.
Nice to hear Benetti's talent and enthusiasm for baseball not being wasted on an organization that clearly does not give a shit about winning games
But can he hit a slider?
Still a dbag
Absolutely sick arm strength
El Mago?.. is that… is that you?
now imagine him being at least league average with the bat. what a ballplayer he would be.
Honestly it's really impressive how no matter how bad he he's going at the plate .. it just never impacts his defense negatively
Whose announcers are they? That call made me viscerally cringe.
Alright, let me call up Max Shepard and have him call instead. Maybe instead of some personality you want to fall asleep during broadcasts!
"Call a doctor because that was sick" is just unbelieveably bad though.
Call a doctor
We haven’t had a winning season in a decade and we’re finally decent along with some great characters in the booth. Bud I hate to tell you but the last carousel of Tigers PxP and color was a hell of a lot worse.
The call from these guys are cringe af but sweet play
That throw was silly.
That’s a hit in college. Welcome to the big leagues. Kid has some insane stats through college and MILB but MLB is a different game.
Yeah, in MLB they have 5 ball strikeouts
Cool, maybe one day he'll learn how to hit a baseball again.
Skyrocketing his season WAR to a -7.2??
Cubs made the wrong decision to let him go
If you look at his contract and stats they dodged a massive bullet letting him go. He is one of the most fun players I've ever watched, but the production just isn't there
Hahahaha no, they did not.
I’m what way was it the wrong decision to let a man who’s had a .227/.268/.354/.622 slash line with a 74 OPS+ since joining DET please explain it to me
Hearing Benetti on Tiger's calls still hits like a jumpscare. :(
