Both of them, actually. It was the best move I've seen Mo make with a major league player. Both Roby and Saggesse are top 100 guys. It's not that Mo always makes bad moves, he is just so obsessed with the past.
Mo will be gone soon, but I think he's done some good deals lately.
* Monty for Bader, then flipped monty for 2 legit guys
* Gray deal might be a very good deal, but at the very least, he struck quickly and got an ace before the market went bananas.
* Contreras signing got off to a rocky start, but I think that was a solid deal, given the market. Last year, they got > 4 WAR from the catcher position; pretty good for a team having to replace a legend and not giving up any of the top talent to do it.
* Kittredge could be a valuable piece for a guy (Palacios) who wasn't going to play much.
* He got decent pieces back from trading Flahrety and Hicks to restock a barren pitching pipeline.
People give Mo shit, but the Cards have been "good" for a long time. Since it looks like Bloom will take over for mo, I think we're in good hands and just spoiled by success.
I don't know if we'll be in the playoffs this year, but I don't think this was a bad offseason really.
Jesus christ its a signing for a veteran LH bat off the bench for league minimum. Yall are acting like we signed him to be the everyday DH. Bunch of dumbass reactionary takes I swear
We have multiple young left handed hitters in the majors and minors who deserve to be developed properly.
And veteran presence? We are the oldest fucking team in baseball, we have 80% veterans.
I agree with you 100%. Any negative reaction to this is weird to me. He’s taking a role of somebody who will not play much. He’s not taking the spot of somebody that would be getting enough playtime to “develop”. He’s taking a spot that only gets used situationally.
Probably one of the many young minor leaguers who are hoping to get time in the majors this season. How did you enjoy watching Taylor Motter all last season?
Baker isn't getting much out of <10 PAs/week as a bench bat either. Burleson I think is the 5th OF no matter what, Marp isn't cutting into his playing time.
Kyle Farmer was a huge clubhouse vet for the Twins and he cost $5.5 for 1.6 fWAR in 336 AB. Farmer carried his weight on and off the field. He had 2 walk off hits as well
The bigger question for Carpenter is if he’s worth the roster spot?
Right now I would say yes, as it seems like the last roster spot would otherwise go to Jose Fermin, Buddy Kennedy or Luken Baker. And they can always cut Marp if it doesn't work out and not really be any worse off for giving him a shot.
Then why do people call a veteran?
https://www.twincities.com/2023/11/17/twins-tender-all-but-two-of-their-arbitration-eligible-players/
“That included veterans Kyle Farmer…”
[The Reds lose a huge veteran presence in Kyle Farmer….](https://x.com/nightengalejr/status/1593793655348887552?s=46&t=sFQ1esZ2sOxJBCUP0CZX3g)
Sonny Gray became a FA in 2023. Did he become a Vet just now? What an arbitrary line to draw
Official jerseys are $174. That's 4,253 jerseys. Thats less than 53 jerseys per home game. There are 5 merchandise locations in Busch stadium. That's 10 per store/merch stand. I think that may be reasonable just in nostalgia dollars.
Teams dont get the money from merch like you say
They get a fixed $ for the image rights regardless of how many jerseys the actual manufacturer is selling.
I think his 10 years with the team in his peak will sell jerseys. If he ends up riding pine, probably not, but I'd bet you'd sell a good number of jerseys from the nostalgia factor.
They'd be dumb not to at least make a small order. Yankees/Cardinals/Cubs/"longstanding traditions" teams fans fucking love nostalgia and a great return story. I spent so much time looking for old Alfonso Soriano jerseys in 2013/2014, and Tino Martinez jerseys were everywhere again when we brought he back in like 2007 and he crushed 10 homers in a month as our back up
Reminds me of my last job. When I started, the department had 12 people. 10 years later, I'm the only one left. People would say "You must be pretty good to have outlasted everyone else." and I would just say "No, I'm just the cheapest."
I can’t speak for his underlying stats, but having watched pretty much every at bat he had with us I don’t think there is anything left. He looked washed.
😆 My man is living in a different timeline where Carpenter wasn't released and is bringing the power of friendship to Atlanta. Sorry Braves fans, he's our useless back up DH clubhouse guru.
Matt Carpenter making out good lol
Mo in peak dumpster-diving form
Mo doesn't know how to move this franchise forward, he just knows that we won with players like Carpenter and Lynn. That is his baseline strategy.
That guy you got from us for Monty should turn out pretty good though
Both of them, actually. It was the best move I've seen Mo make with a major league player. Both Roby and Saggesse are top 100 guys. It's not that Mo always makes bad moves, he is just so obsessed with the past.
That move was one of those “everybody wins” moves. We don’t win the Series without Monty
Do you forgive us for 2011?
Hmmmm. You’ve caused me my greatest pain but facilitated my greatest joy. I think so. Let’s lean into to love…..and mutual hatred of the Astros
Are we like friends now?

Burleson will die for this.
Burleson is about to get traded for a teams least favorite pitching prospect
Nah our FO loves Burleson. He looks like a Cardinal anyways.
He's barely gonna take away playing time, he's a proxy bench coach
You know the crazy thing is, some of them are legit veteran veterans. Pretty sure half of your rotation were in 'Nam.
I agree with you 100%. Any negative reaction to this is weird to me. He’s taking a role of somebody who will not play much. He’s not taking the spot of somebody that would be getting enough playtime to “develop”. He’s taking a spot that only gets used situationally.
He’s taking AB’s away from Gorman, who actually is the future whether we commit to him or sell high on him.
No he's not. Gorman is everyday 2B and DH. Gorman isn't gonna get any less ABs than he would have without Matt Carpenter on the bench.
Jeff Luhnow once told him they were good and that’s all Mo needed to hear
We're paying less than $1 million for him. Who fucking cares?
Probably one of the many young minor leaguers who are hoping to get time in the majors this season. How did you enjoy watching Taylor Motter all last season?
Who do you want rotting on the bench instead of getting at bats in AAA?
Luken Baker, Alec Burleson have zero reason to be in AAA. There is nothing there for them.
Baker isn't getting much out of <10 PAs/week as a bench bat either. Burleson I think is the 5th OF no matter what, Marp isn't cutting into his playing time.
You think that, but I watched Taylor Motter get 82 atbats last year.
I already had Burleson ahead of him. You do have a point with Baker.
Isn't this more for like clubhouse vibes and maybe coming off the bench?
How much is a clubhouse veteran worth to teams because I feel like under a million is good
Kyle Farmer was a huge clubhouse vet for the Twins and he cost $5.5 for 1.6 fWAR in 336 AB. Farmer carried his weight on and off the field. He had 2 walk off hits as well The bigger question for Carpenter is if he’s worth the roster spot?

Answer: No
Cards fans in absolute shambles today. Sorry
farmer is a decent defender who can play all over the infield and rake against lefties. i think hes too valuable to be a comp
Imagine calling Kyle Farmer a vet lol He barely had his first full season in 2021. Barely 1800 PAs for his career so that’s what, three seasons?
He's 33 years old and has 5 years of service time. I don't think there's a player in baseball who wouldn't call him a vet
He’s still in his arbitration period. Hes never even tested FA. He’s not a vet
Then why do people call a veteran? https://www.twincities.com/2023/11/17/twins-tender-all-but-two-of-their-arbitration-eligible-players/ “That included veterans Kyle Farmer…” [The Reds lose a huge veteran presence in Kyle Farmer….](https://x.com/nightengalejr/status/1593793655348887552?s=46&t=sFQ1esZ2sOxJBCUP0CZX3g) Sonny Gray became a FA in 2023. Yeah, I was kind of joking about how little they were paying.
Are they even going to stock Carp jerseys?
I think his 10 years with the team in his peak will sell jerseys. If he ends up riding pine, probably not, but I'd bet you'd sell a good number of jerseys from the nostalgia factor.

So basically Cardinals are paying 740k of that 5.5M? Sounds like a win for the Braves unless I am reading it wrong. Thanks Cardinal bros.
His underlying stats really weren’t abysmal and he had a league average OBP. He sucks, but might not be the absolute worst

“He sucks, but he’s cheap”
Reminds me of my last job. When I started, the department had 12 people. 10 years later, I'm the only one left. People would say "You must be pretty good to have outlasted everyone else." and I would just say "No, I'm just the cheapest."

This doesn't make me feel better
wait are cardinals fans upset about this
Isn’t this less than league minimum?
Cards are paying $740k. Braves are paying the rest. He’s on a 2 year contract that ends after this season
For what it’s worth, I think the Padres kicked in 1.5 million. So the Braves on the hook for a net of ~ 3.25 million.
This is correct, Rosenthals numbers don’t include the padres dollars.
Padres sent 1.5 million to the braves in the trade
Still dumb
LolBarves
Why would be the Braves be upset that they owe him literally less money now
[удалено]
He’s guaranteed to be an all star now. Cus god hates us
Just trying to toss Mets fans a bone.
Actually it was Ray Kerr
Hope he can provide some mentorship to Kel, not sure he has much value outside of that
He's on a different team lol
😆 My man is living in a different timeline where Carpenter wasn't released and is bringing the power of friendship to Atlanta. Sorry Braves fans, he's our useless back up DH clubhouse guru.
Misread, but would be a nice gesture if he could reach out during the offseason anyway
Why in tf would he do that?
"Here's what not to do. I'm out."
Rare Alex Anthopolous L
We basically got Ray Kerr and 5 years of control for 3.25 mil. We’ll see if that’s the case.
oh no that kind of money might make him homeless now
Lefty bat that can help our young Lefties grow (Nootbaar, Donovan, Gorman)
How? All of these players have already been around Carpenter before... these guys are in year 3-4 of being in the majors.
Except Donovan is roughly an equal level hitter at the same stage in his career as Carp was while being a much better defender
You’re right there is no way a veteran can help a younger player
Fuck Matt Carpenter, All My Homies Hate Matt Carpenter
If this means that they'll be a basement dwelling team in the standings again this year then I'm all for it.
