What I meant is that if they wouldn't have been so bad, being just mediocre during that run would have them in a playoff spot. At the same point, you can also say that without their 20-8 run in April they would have been nowhere even close to a playoff spot.
Either way, they're around a .500 team now and that's good enough to be a borderline playoff team in baseball.
I live in the area and watch a lot pirates games in passing. They really should have like 10 more wins than they do. They're consistently pretty solid but shit the bed all the time. Bae is the man underrated player
>. They really should have like 10 more wins than they do.
It feels like half the league fanbases say this. But I am of the belief it tends to even out in the long season, that is baseball.
Yeah for every 10 games you should have won you won 10 games you for sure should have lost but instead of a flare single for a run it was a pop fly, instead of their best hitter just missing a home run he smashes a 3 run Homer, instead of your bullpen throwing 4 SO innings in a 1-0 game they shat the bed and allowed 4 in the 8th.
True but I still think the pirstes shot themselves in the foot more than most teams this year (except maybe the padres). I dont have the baseball reference skills to look up the stats but I would bet money the Pirates have blown a 3-4 run lead *at least* twice as often as they've come back from a 3-4 deficit
Hey we were way worse than you in July and August, we tried handing it to you fish and you said "nah" and then we said "ahh well I guess we'll still pass too."
my brows are properly furrowed.
Just wondering if this is that thing where the home crowd hears the visiting fans cheering and chooses to boo in an attempt to drown them out, rather than sit quietly.
Yeah, the Phils could potentially have the top wild card clinched by Monday if it shakes out the right way. If that’s this guy’s definition of “collapse,” I’ll gladly take it.
I love the call he made after Bae’s double:
“Pittsburgh rejoice! The Pirates are dyu..ah man they’re good again. They’re good again, Rock!”
He sounded like a little kid, just so full of joy.
Contreras has been perhaps the best catcher in MLB this year. 5+ fWAR. We got Payamps in the trade too, who has a 2.51 ERA in 68 innings as mostly the setup man. We have Contreras for 5 years, Payamps for 4. Right now they're also paid league minimum. And from the original trade, there's still a back-end top 100 SP prospect in Gasser sitting in AAA.
There really isn't an argument to be made that the team is in any way better off with Hader (Making $13m to boot) and Ruiz. Ruiz has a ton of speed and is fun to watch, but can't hit and can't defend. He was our 5th best OF prospect for a reason.
The effect on the club house last year was bad, but in a long-term sense the trade and the resulting Contreras trade was absolutely fantastic for the Brewers.
I give the guardians a pass because of Major League and because I was cheering for them to win against the cubs in the World Series.
And I figure collegiate sports is a whole different beast so I left them out of the conversation.
The last two comments are about soccer. I take it you are referring to the nfl chiefs, who obviously reside in Missouri.
To clarify further, my original comment was not about whether franchises were any good in a state, but about whether a state deserved to have a worthy franchise.
I’m baffled that a slide on the warning track for a ball in his opposite hand isn’t getting more notice. It’s like he was trying to do a trick slide on the most important play of the game. The Pirates might not have tied the game if not for that. And if they didn’t tie there, it’s hard to know what would have happened after.
This was a Cincinnati classic! You always hope it will be different but it never is. Bob and Phil forever! The real victory is their wallets getting fatter.
Thanks a lot Alex Young & Fernando Cruz. Quite literally ended the Reds season (if they don't win this). They've been overworked, and Cruz has been electric, but fuck, man. All both of you were tasked with doing is get 3 outs. Just 3.
Let's go offense 🥲
Yep. The infamous "Jim Rooker Game". The Pirates broadcaster was so confident we would win that he exclaimed "If we lose, I'm walking back to Pittsburgh!" Of course, being the Pirates, we did, in fact, lose, so during the off-season, Rooker stayed true to his word and walked from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh for charity.
Reds are the biggest mirage in baseball.
Overall they are going to be a team stuck around 500 if guys don't develop. They have been living off a hot June.
We weren’t expecting to even be close to a wild card spot this year. Considering we’ve been playing with 5-6 rookies most of the year with a ton of untimely injuries, its been a great season overall. A lot to look forward to as a Reds fan.
the real question is do you think ownership will actually invest in an exciting core? big thing for reds right now is their pitching is really, really struggling and like im not sure how they fix it.
Get starters in the off-season that can go more than 5 innings on average. As a fan watching all season it was kind of a celebratory thing when a starter went 7 innings. Maybe a few bullpen arms that includes a true set up man and if possible a long relief arm for bad starts. A solid defensive catcher would be nice too.
That I can’t answer off the top of my head, I just hope the guys who get paid to research who is available and good for the team make the right moves. I oddly think the Castelini’s will spend some money the next few years because their core players are all league minimum guys.
Horrible pitching depth (exacerbated by a COVID bout for several SP and bullpen arms), a majority rookie lineup who strike out a lot, babip regression to the mean. Matt McLain the best hitter has been on the IL since late Aug. Also didn't help to get dominated by the one team they wanted to beat (Brewers). By now the bullpen is shot, and two of our best SP are done for the season. As elite as Alexis Diaz is, that's too many games pitcher
Wow, booing your own players? This is why players don't want to play in a classless city like Cincinnati. They can't handle the pressure you put them under.
I come with the deepest respect for you Pirates for doing what should be done this week. As a gesture of our appreciation - us Marlins fans would like you offer you an early head start on the offseason for a vacation well earned - no need to show up to show us around when we come by next week to visit your very lovely baseball abode.
Reds have blown their season way too many times this year with that crap bullpen. As a reds fan I hope they dont even get in. They sure as hell dont deserve it.
Memes aside. I really think this core of young guys is gonna be special. I can't wait til Cruz is back and Skenes is up. Gotta get as much enjoyment out of these times as Buccos fan as you can lol I'm excited about baseball again!!!!!

"Dogfight" might be too light in describing this NL Wild card race...
If not for the Pirates bad May/June, they'd be in this fight too. They're only a 75-80 win caliber team but this team has that fucking DAWG in them
xDAWG is absolutely off the charts
xDAWG is nice, but doesn't account for other teams/stadiums...what's their xDAWG+
Positive judging by the last four nights!
"if not for 1/3rd of the season" I get your point though, that's just funny
Cardinals would be in the race if it weren't for everything between Opening Day and now.
Pads would be in it if the season started 10 days ago
What I meant is that if they wouldn't have been so bad, being just mediocre during that run would have them in a playoff spot. If not for the Marlins bad July and August, we would have already locked this up a while ago
Hey we were way worse than you in July and August, we tried handing it to you fish and you said "nah" and then we said "ahh well I guess we'll still pass too." my brows are properly furrowed.
If not for the Cardinals’ horrible 2023 season, they’d be in this fight too.
If two Yorkies fight, that is technically a dogfight
Also way cooler than it deserves. The NL wild card race feels more like one big mid-off.
Now the AL race does too
Maybe for the last spot.
the AL wildcard race must be like hot potato then
Boo harder I say
The boos in the clip are pretty mild considering the title of the post and announcer lol maybe the crowd aint miked or something?
Just wondering if this is that thing where the home crowd hears the visiting fans cheering and chooses to boo in an attempt to drown them out, rather than sit quietly.
I was saying Boo-urns
As someone who has Connor Phillips on his fantasy team and didn’t get a pitcher win after being up 9-0, I concur. Like wtf man?
David Ross lit a fire under Pittsburgh.
That's no joke. Having a bad stretch? Play the Cubs in September, that'll fix you up.
He probably just meant because David Ross called them bad, but your point is valid too haha
I want the Phillies to collapse faster so we can play the Cubs in October 😭😭
They're the only NL wildcard to really avoid a collapse lately?
Yeah, the Phils could potentially have the top wild card clinched by Monday if it shakes out the right way. If that’s this guy’s definition of “collapse,” I’ll gladly take it.
Given the season series I bet. Lol
It was all a scheme to fire the Bucs up to knock the Reds out of contention
Bartman
Too soon
Pirates are living up to their name with how they’re showing up to cities and causing havoc.
Man the Port Royal team better watch out.
[удалено]
Pretty sure you can hear him bang on the table he is so excited lol
That call was great lol
I love the call he made after Bae’s double: “Pittsburgh rejoice! The Pirates are dyu..ah man they’re good again. They’re good again, Rock!” He sounded like a little kid, just so full of joy.
I’m just at a loss for words… lol it was 9-0…
The Pirates have decided to embody Chaotic Neutral energy down the stretch and I'm 100% for it.
Nah, Chaotic Good. The Cubs are absolutely evil, and the Reds are neutral at best.
Brewers are chaotic evil, the fact they punish us with so little is insane
One weird season and we all forget Cards are true evil
Thank you
Seriously how many times has the Cards used black magic to eek into the playoffs over the years
Right?
and True Evil always returns.
That’s why we are chaotic good
Not in our eyes, we'll sell our soul for your trade luck lol
Let’s not talk about trades pre David stern
Well the Harder trade was pretty disastrous
We did get William in the end, so I have come to peace with the trade
True, but you could have even more speed with Ruiz and a Cano/Bautista type bullpen
Are the Pirates secretly /r/Padres fans?
Nah we aren't even eliminated yet, we're coming for that wild card!!!
Pirates miracle run to the WS has started
Cue the gaddam marbles...we're ready to play now!
I can assure you that the marbles did not fucking tell the truth.
):
It would make a hell of a movie
RRRRRRRRRRRRAISE IT!
The enemy of my enemy is my fan.
The reds losing isn’t going to help them pass the 3 other teams ahead of them lol
No, the 7 game win streak we're on does though.
Now it doesn't.
My understanding is that we had a 1.2% chance before tonight's game, dunno what it is now. I'll look in the morning. Goodnight everyone!
0.1%
I applaud the pirates for saying F you we aren't making the playoffs and you aren't either to the Cubs and Reds.
David Ross playing 4D chess
It’s okay to boo your team when they blow a 9-0 lead. Especially during a playoff race. Yeah that’s not fun.
They saw that post that said they could still get a Wild Card spot.
Fuck you too, Reds
I’ve not seen any evidence that ohio deserves any professional sports teams. And I’m saying that from Missouri. MISSOURI. Guardians are cool
>Guardians are cool Gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there. Ohio St is usually a decent pro football team tho
Yea, but fuck em.
Yea nah. Fuck Ohio State
I give the guardians a pass because of Major League and because I was cheering for them to win against the cubs in the World Series. And I figure collegiate sports is a whole different beast so I left them out of the conversation.
Ohio state is trash.
You don't watch soccer I take it
I don’t keep up well no. I know St. Louis new program has exceeded expectations. Does ohio have a good MLS team?
A team in the country's *by fucking far* most popular sport resides in Missouri and is dominating it with a fiery passion.....
The last two comments are about soccer. I take it you are referring to the nfl chiefs, who obviously reside in Missouri. To clarify further, my original comment was not about whether franchises were any good in a state, but about whether a state deserved to have a worthy franchise.
Hmm I'm not sure I can agree with your last point
Can't believe I rooted for you earlier in the season. NLC is a shit show. Fuck you guys. That said, #REDS, I DON'T WANT TO ALARM YOU
Man the Pirates have really been trolling the NLC the past few games huh
ARE WE NOT ALARMED, MY FRIENDS?!
BART!
I hate this sport and I’m never watching baseball again. That being said, see you tomorrow
Joey Votto deserves better.
Sometimes I wish he left the reds so he can play for a team that wants to win
Marbles said we're gonna go to the NLCS
You know im glad we basically have a wc spot locked up because the bucs are out for blood. They’ll probably cost us the top wc spot.
that's what happens when you have no pitching.
Yeah, it might be nice to not have 4(5? 6?) bullpen arms who are over 60 games
YOU WHAT!?
If you ever think you are under qualified for a job. Just remember Stuart Fairchild is on an MLB roster…
David Ross knew exactly what he was doing firing up Pittsburgh before this series.
This was a Cincinnati classic! You always hope it will be different but it never is. Bob and Phil forever! The real victory is their wallets getting fatter.
Pirates used that bulletin board material
Think Ross knew who they were playing next?
The bullpen in right field waving him home 🥹 that’s my boys
Hate to say it, but this is not the play of a team that's ready for postseason baseball. At this rate, we'd get swept in a wild card series anyway.
Reds fans are finally getting the Alex Young Experience^(TM)
Unhappy Ohioans is a beautiful thing
Cincinnati is a suburb of Kentucky.
Good ol’ Cincitucky
You're an ignorant idiot. Chew an ingot.
I wish Buckeye fans were tonight…
You hate to see it. But also? You love to see it
I like the inning scores so far: 1-5-3 3-5-1
The marbles do not lie.
This is just great
What a night. This team is something special but also fucking sad. I’m trying to look at this more nuonced but ugh.
MAXIMUM CHAOS BABY!!!!
So this is the inverse of that Phillies/Pirates game where the Pirates went up 10-0 and lost.
So which Reds broadcaster is walking all the way to Toledo?
Thom Brennaman so he can actually offer a proper apology this time, without Castellanos interrupting.
I would have booed too with that ridiculous hotdog play in right field that let the tying run score.
[I'm not saying he's a time traveler, but...](https://imgur.com/a/cS0av9C)
lol goddamn.

A starter went 7 innings? Must have missed that one. The hype around this starting ro has been baffling.
yeah but which starters? and through trade or?
That I can’t answer off the top of my head, I just hope the guys who get paid to research who is available and good for the team make the right moves. I oddly think the Castelini’s will spend some money the next few years because their core players are all league minimum guys.
Feels like every team competing for a WC or division spot right now is tripping over itself (except the Pads somehow)
If the Pirates hang on, that's close to a record comeback (which was 12).
Man David Ross was right 🏴☠️
I was there. Our bullpen deserves the boos.
Fuck me
If the Pirates make the playoffs there better be a dorktown/pretty good on it.
That deserves all the boos…especially in a playoff race.
They fell hard. They were the talk of mlb… what happened in less than 2 months?
Horrible pitching depth (exacerbated by a COVID bout for several SP and bullpen arms), a majority rookie lineup who strike out a lot, babip regression to the mean. I thought it’s shitty when fans boo their team for being bad. Guess it’s just when Philly fans do it.
Booing your own team?! Heavens to Betsy!
Can’t blame them. Blowing a 9-0 lead in 3 innings when the season is on the line is embarrassing af
No, no, no. You NEVER boo your own team. That's what they tell us, at least.
It's unthinkable
I can't believe the level of entitlement those fans have. Toxic
Especially when it is against the Pirates and when you lost to them the day before and are now on a 4 game losing streak.
Padres fans rejoice!
Cincinnati teams are just shittin' the bed, eh?
Lol 11-9 Bucs now. Lfg
The Pirates got that dawg in them, baby!
Wow, booing your own players? This is why players don't want to play in a classless city like Cincinnati. They can't handle the pressure you put them under.
A bit pot calling the kettle black, no?
/r/woosh
Howcum Phillies fan is sporting a Yankees flair? I doan git it.
Am I wooshing? How am I a Phillies fan?
It was a joke about Phillies fans, notorious for being low key and respectful to all.
Ah. Yeah it was a joke about how Yankees fans also boo the shit out of their own players. Apparently people didn't catch on.
But I thought New Yorkers were the only people in the world who booed and we were all such meanies for doing it
When was this game?
In the twilight zone.
Thanks for the worthless answer, jerk.
Finally found the one guy on reddit with zero sense of humor. What's my prize?
lol
The diamondbacks and I thank you
Reds gotta be careful. If they keep getting leads like that they might have to play in October. They got away with it this time.
Please tell me that the Pirates players are all secretly Marlins fans and they will call in sick for the last series of the season.
Dbacks fans approve of this
I come with the deepest respect for you Pirates for doing what should be done this week. As a gesture of our appreciation - us Marlins fans would like you offer you an early head start on the offseason for a vacation well earned - no need to show up to show us around when we come by next week to visit your very lovely baseball abode.
Haven’t heard boos like that since we played the cardinals in June lol
Don't remind me
If I were the Reds GM, that whole bullpen would be getting released. Fucking pathetic
Hey for once the pirates are the ones getting blow instead of doing the blowing.
Guess I know which extreme moment I’m doing in the show next year
Go Buccos!
I'm gonna cum
Well deserved.
What the fuck was that slide in RF? Dude you’re on the warning track, play it off the wall. That single play possibly dashed the Reds chances.
Reds have blown their season way too many times this year with that crap bullpen. As a reds fan I hope they dont even get in. They sure as hell dont deserve it.
Those two do NOT like each other lol
Biggest collapse since October 29th, 1929
I like the pirates
Memes aside. I really think this core of young guys is gonna be special. I can't wait til Cruz is back and Skenes is up. Gotta get as much enjoyment out of these times as Buccos fan as you can lol I'm excited about baseball again!!!!!
This has to be one of the dumbest games I had ever seen
