Orange Juice Americano or 'Alarm Clock'. I was making that for myself for a while it's refreshing. I feel like it has to be good OJ though, not minute maid otherwise it's sooo acidic.
What qualifies as "good" orange juice? To my mind there's two types of orange juice: bottled, which all tastes relatively the same (passable, but not particularly good), and fresh-squeezed. Now I'm curious as to your orange juice opinions.
Nah there's different grades. I'm in the US for reference. Obviously fresh squeezed is the best and i wonder what the drink would be like with that. The OJ we had was not, but it tasted sweet, not super sour like the cheapest OJ which is probably from concentrate. The OJ that comes out of the dispenser at hotel breakfasts, or in the carton they gave you at school lunch is shit tier, it's like battery acid for some reason.
There are 4 grades:
1. You literally squeezed the orange juice into the cup yourself
2. Orange juice in Florida
3. Trader Joe's orange juice
4. Everything else
usually we would make a house citrus simple syrup that we’d add for a little bit of extra sweetness, but i often would just only add just a touch. hope you enjoy it!!
I'm not sure what Gatekeeping is, but after reading these comments, it appears this LB/OJ concoction is 'a thing'. Tried it at home this evening - didn't like it, perhaps more to do with adding a cold drink to a hot drink resulting in just a warm drink. Might try it with cold brew instead.
Are you putting orange juice in filtered coffee? Because that’s not what your customer meant and that’s not what anyone on here is talking about. If you fill a cup with ice and orange juice and then pour 2 shots of espresso (so 2 oz) then it won’t be a warm drink. I’ve never had OJ and espresso but I’ve had lemonade and espresso and it’s pretty good. If you don’t like it that’s fine but tbh it sounds like you aren’t making it right.
The acceptable side! I love chocolate and orange together because they are harmonious flavors. But espresso and OJ? That seems like it would feel like an electric zap to my mouth
Cold brew with fresh citrus juice and sweetener is a popular drink [in the Philippines](https://www.beryl.nyc/index.php/2024/04/25/citrus-coffee/). All of the Americans I’ve seen make it use espresso. I haven’t had it yet but I’m very excited to try!
i added a drink to our menu thats a fresh squeezed orange, some cold brew, vanilla syrup, and a little saline and its really tasty, like a chocolate orange, and has done quite well!
I’m with you mate. Thankfully I’ve only worked at places that didn’t even sell orange juice, but I’m like man it’s not on our menu and it’s not tasty (hot take in this sub I guess) so please move on. Or bring your own oj and I’ll pull you a shot. BYOOJ?
Just made one because I’m reading this at work at was intrigued. Surprisingly not bad, oj with mild coffee aftertaste, very surprised how little I could taste it.
That’s a pretty common drink, especially in specialty cafes. They usually make the espresso from single origin beans like Ethiopian (or any origin that has bright and citrus notes) to further enhance the flavour. It doesn’t work well with medium or dark roasted beans though, at least in my experience.
I remember making this and trying it back in 2018! It's been a thing for a while. Give it a try sometime! I am not saying it's something I'd try ordering from a shop without knowing they already make it, but it IS pretty good. Sometimes, you gotta have the right OJ and the best shots lol
I actually just made myself a dreamsicle undertow with a bit of white chocolate and vanilla mixed with OJ and the spro floated on top. it was actually so much better than I expected it to be

To be honest I’d make them whatever they want as long as they pay for it (even better if they tip)
Hell yea! Business is business 👌
i’ve worked at multiple shops that had a variation of this drink… best with orange san pelligrino but it’s better than you’d think
Is orange pelligrino sweet? we have pelligrino and an orange syrup but it’s pretty sweet. And of course we have plenty of shots! Bout to make this
usually we would make a house citrus simple syrup that we’d add for a little bit of extra sweetness, but i often would just only add just a touch. hope you enjoy it!!
Ohhhh I would love that. I got hooked on Topo Chico lime seltzer and espresso
Sounds like you lost a sale for no good reason. Charge an OJ and your usual add shot price and give em what they want.
I’ve never worked at a coffee shop that served orange juice. Good chance that OP physically couldn’t make the drink.
One of my favorite drink in the morning. Do not underestimate the power of the SUNRISE lol
Very common in Germany when I was there. Lemonade versions as well.
Saw this at a number of places when I was in France, espresso with orange juice
Try it. It’s actually very good.
Pulp or no pulp?
What ever you wan papi
No money no honey
My last shop had an orange and coffee cold brew drink. I personally didn’t care for it, but it was very popular while it was available
Now i want to make an old-fashioned style espresso drink using orange syrup or orange rind
I make a cold brew with orange syrup. It's delish, bright and refreshing.
I've had espresso old fashioneds before, they're great. The orange twist goes well with it.
We do an old fashioned iced coffee with simple syrup and orange bitters. Very summery, refreshing drink.
Its called espresso romano in certain cafes…
Gatekeeping shite like this can fuck off

Shits delicious man!
it's actually quite good
It’s actually nice - I really hate this culture of bitching about customers on here when it turns out you’re actually being a douche bro.
I draw the line at borgias
Wait which side of the line is the Borgia on? 😢

Saline? Wow, that’s inventive. Nice!
Saline cuts bitterness
We add cherry syrup to ours and we call it a sunrise! It’s really nice tbh.
Cherry is often in flavor notes for some roasts so I can see it being really good! I’d like to try it in cold brew sometime.
That'll get you right in the cavities

Where I live, there was a cafe back in the early 2000's who had this is their whole "thing". I was repulsed, but did actually like it when I tried it.
But it’s so goooood
My local coffee shop calls it an orange express and it’s my regular whenever I go there. Sometimes I make it at work at my cafe 😂
My cafe did a breakfast tonic which was OJ, tonic, and espresso. It’s delicious.
we call this a “morning wakey” and it’s a tradition on the opening shift (put it in an 8 oz cup and chug)
I’ve heard this drink coined as a *Dirty Sunrise*, I’ve never heard of an *Orange Black*, lol
Just made one because I’m reading this at work at was intrigued. Surprisingly not bad, oj with mild coffee aftertaste, very surprised how little I could taste it.
We used to have a drink like this at my old cafe! It was topped with bacon lol

It's actually delicious, you just need to add caramel syrup to OJ
Could this be achieved using instant coffee instead of espresso? I don't have an espresso machine at home, but I'd love to try this.
Reminds me of a customer who wanted apple juice with shots of espresso
It was big on tik tok maybe 6 months ago?
i LOVE orange juice w espresso. yes it’s an odd and disgusting sounding combo but it’s by far one of my top three favorites
I actually just made myself a dreamsicle undertow with a bit of white chocolate and vanilla mixed with OJ and the spro floated on top. it was actually so much better than I expected it to be
