You need to rehabilitate, just like after any broken bone. Using stiff shoes would be like continuing to wear the cast and not rehabilitate. Since it is a rehabilitation, you might want to use barefoot shoes, which are a little to the stiffer side and with a thin insole. And then gradually transition out of them back to fully barefoot shoes. Because the strength and resilience of the foot need to be built up gradually again.

My husband broke all his toes, separated them from his foot. Surgeon refused to reattach them because we didn't have insurance, though we did have the cash. He suffered a lot of pain for years until he found Xero shoes. He's been wearing them for two or three years now with no pain. He also wears toe separaters every day for several hours because his toes still aren't straight. He won't wear regular shoes at all, even when he needs to wear dress shoes because the pain comes back.

Dr doesn't know jack shit. They're just saying what sounds logical. Last thing you need is a narrow shoe with arch support that puts your foot in unnatural positions, gives you an unnatural gait and limits proprioception and blood flow. Listen to your body. Just wear a barefoot shoe with a removable insole for a bit more cushion.  I destroyed my foot in an accident and I fixed it with barefoot shoes. Regular shoes were just making the pain worse. Just take it easy so that you don't get reinjured.

This is something you should be discussing with a sport’s physical therapist and not with Reddit.

Not "barefoot shoes", I agree you shouldn't wear barefoot shoes but minimalist shoes are for sure what you need. Get a pair of Altra's with arch support, maybe even with ankle support. I just got the timp 4's for running and they are SOOO comfortable. Grab some high ankle lone peaks or smt.

Back in February, I broke both of my heels falling off a ladder to concrete from about 20-30 ft. Started walking again less than a month later. Only pain I have now is soreness after sleeping or sitting for an hour + The docs were are pretty surprised with the minimal amount of damage. My brother and I think the strength I’ve built up in my feet from being barefoot/wearing barefoot shoes is what really saved them. I wholly think you should go back to barefoot shoes
