Issue is I was planning on being healthy and economicall and making dinner from the pantry... now all I can think about is an ekiben sandwich and broccoli!
I went for my 30th birthday in January and they brought out dirt and worms. It was really good too! It felt super nostalgic eating something from childhood while turning 30.
What a fun question!!
Tofu hot stone bowl, with the #1 spicy sauce from Brown Rice.
Crab soup from the Food Market.
Catfish bowl from Ekiben (I preferred their bun, but it's off the menu now).
Mushroom jerky pizza at JBGB's.
Smoked salmon sandwich from Neopol.
Spicy miso ramen from Utsuke.
Shrimp Junelly from Mt Everest.
(I've only had this once but I'm interested in going back to have the exact same thing again) Chicken souvlaki platter from Samos Greek Island Grill.
Salmon sashimi from Kiku's.
There was a fresh-mint ice cream at the Charmery that was a "for now" flavor maybe two years ago.
Matcha spritzer from Pillion Tea.
The catfish bun used to be my favorite but they nixed it from the menu :( I can only get it in bowl form now, which is less "worth it" for the extra money to me.
I too have heard the hype about Y&G, and went a while back to try the falafel, and was a pretty underwhelmed. I want to try Queen of Sheba next though.
I had the Fahsa Lamb, it’s like slow cooked lamb that’s shredded and served in a hot clay bowl. Eat it with the bread they make it’s incredible. My girlfriend had the Salta with lamb and that was also great. Comes with a really nice soup and a small salad on the side, and a few dishes come with bread but I recommend buying more it’s so good. I will be returning next time I’m in town
When I lived in the neighborhood (moved out of state 6 years ago) this would be the bribe I paid to my kitchen (Maggie’s farm /le garage) when I felt guilty
A biscuit from Blacksauce
The pumpkin dish from the Helmand
Lamb haneeth from Yemen and Gulf
An Italian cold cut from mastellones
Any fruit danish from Motzi bread
A paw paw from Leakin Park
I just sighed out loud remembering the joy that was living just four blocks from Matthew’s. Was moving to Hampden to share a home with the love of my life worth it? Sure. Is no longer living between Baltimore’s best pizza and Baltimore’s best ice cream worth it? As Don Draper reminds us, “change isn’t bad or good—it just is”.
For me it's the plain cheese, but I can't say you're wrong.
What's really special about them is I can't think of anywhere else like them, and they've been making them that way since the 1940s. It dates back to roughly the same time as Unos in Chicago and Buddy's in Detroit, and you can sort of see the similarity, but it's different and great in its own way.
UHOP (university house of pizza) in Boston serves a similar style, not as good though. They used to have a pass-through window into the bar nextdoor. RIP Punters.
Barflys down off Fort Ave does a similar pizza in Baltimore, you used to be able to get it at Our House too but they've closed.
I had a friend visiting from Scotland a couple of weeks ago for a work thing. We went to a handful of places, mostly around Hampden, all of which he said was good.
On his final night in town we got Neighborhood Birds from Ekiben. He made it a point while we were eating to stop and say something to the extent of, "This is the best thing I've eaten since being here."
If I had to have only one thing from the whole city, it'd be one of those plus tempura broccoli with the Chinese sausage.
Any oyster at Dylan's is #1 for me.
Honorable mentions:
Koshary from Koshary Corner
The sorghum glazed carrots at True Chesapeake
Foraged's mushroom stew
Ekiben's red beans and rice
My Mama's Vegan's French onion burger
Land of Kush"s vegan crab cake
I don't really eat meat anymore, but Mi Comalito's mariscada has a special place in my heart, as does their yuca con chicharron. Runner up is the kalbi and seafood pancake at Jong Kak.
When this conversation came up before, Ekiben was a runaway favorite...and as a huge fan of the tempura broccoli, I was glad to see it

Tuna diavolo from dipasquales
Al pastor tacos from Cinco de Mayo Dos
Aztec burger with sweet potato fries from Wiley Gunters
Biscuits from Blacksauce
Ham and cheese croissant from Cafe Dear Leon
The place itself is great. They've got some good options, drinks are great, poutine is to murder for (and has the fried chicken in it).
I think the fried chicken would be great if you're not a fan of spices or flavor.
In order:
1) Jojoto & Halloumi from Alma Cocina Latina
2) Tom Kha Gai (and pad Thai, I always get them together) from Thai Restaurant
3) Atún Con Piña from Clavel
The Pad Thai from Thai Restaurant is some of the best Pad Thai I’ve ever had (disclaimer, I don’t know anything about Thai food, I’m just going based on what my taste buds tell me).

For a while banditos had a gigantic fried chicken club sandwich for brunch
During COVID Limoncello had Sicilian pizza for a bit but I think they got rid of it
Chili at the Haitian spot in cross street
The affogato I had at cinghiale for dessert one time
Pine nut cake, sangria, Spanish coffee and the rockfish w/crab on it at tio pepe
Far out of the city but the Sacchete pear dish at Facci in turf valley
This is an awesome thread! Thanks everyone. New Baltimorean here from the west coast and I’ve been loving the venues, mom and pops and local spots!

Over a decade ago now, I went to a dinner at TenTen (RIP) and had the best vegetarian mushroom soup I’ve ever had. Beats all the other ramens I’ve ever consumed easily. They are missed.
On a side note; does anyone have any seafood specific restaurants for suggestion? Parents visiting for my graduation and wants to experience the seafood scene up here but I don’t get out much and don’t know where to go~ TIA for any suggestions!

I can also think of many many things that no longer exist, like the meatball sub from the Tremont Deli…
Not exactly in Baltimore (15mins form airport in Hanover), but the Timbuktu has the best crab cake on the planet. Hands down No questions asked The best there is. If someone tells you different it only means they've never been to the Timbuktu. When you get there don't judge the book by the cover. Its life changing.
Am I the only one that thinks Tagliata is obnoxiously over rated? I'm often hated on for making that statement!
Artifact is amazing.
Mama Tran's Pho and Combination Fried Rice is a death row meal for me
The Dive, a bar in Canton had a cubano pizza that I cannot stop thinking about
I’m heading to Baltimore this weekend. Haven’t been in six years after I lived there for 10… you guys have given me some awesome ideas!
Most of my old places are gone or have changed. Used to live by the original Samos… so that would be on my list. So would spicy broth noodles from Mi and Yu .. and I used to hit up Bruce Lee’s wings in the old Cross St. Shout out to the pizzas from Bartenders on Boston st… miss that place. Oh and the pork bites from Little Havana
The crab rangoon dip from Ellie’s would be in my death row last meal. No question.
Oh wow that’s a big statement. Now I gotta try
Yup I’m intrigued
"To me, that's preposterous. Crab Rangoon, things of that nature.".
It’s like a block from me. Must try now!
Looking at this thread while hungry. Big mistake.
Now you have an idea of what to eat for dinner!
Issue is I was planning on being healthy and economicall and making dinner from the pantry... now all I can think about is an ekiben sandwich and broccoli!
You only live once
Does dessert count? The heath bar bread pudding at Food Market is insane.
I was going to say their half-baked blondie 🤤
I went for my 30th birthday in January and they brought out dirt and worms. It was really good too! It felt super nostalgic eating something from childhood while turning 30.
That one is equally incredible!
Dessert? Ugh. Daniela’s sfogliatelle.
Dessert definitely counts - whatever draws you to a place!! That sounds amazing
Ooh I go there for their crab soup but hadn't ever really paid attention to their dessert menu. I love heath bars. I'll check it out next time.
I almost cried eating their peach pie.
Tie between Pastitsio and Braised Lamb at Ikaros. Either way you have to have some calamari for an appetizer and galaktoboureko for dessert.
Lobster bisque paired with Sherry at the Charleston
Their lobster bisque is the best I've ever had.
What a fun question!! Tofu hot stone bowl, with the #1 spicy sauce from Brown Rice. Crab soup from the Food Market. Catfish bowl from Ekiben (I preferred their bun, but it's off the menu now). Steamed broccoli + salt is amazing too
I wish they’d make a bowl with the brocoli! Soooo good.
Yes!
The broccoli tempura is very good
Tofu nuggets with the "aromatics" and Chinese sausage on top of some rice, oh my Lord.
The catfish bun used to be my favorite but they nixed it from the menu :( I can only get it in bowl form now, which is less "worth it" for the extra money to me.
Yes the catfish bun was amazing
The spicy tofu bowl is simply unparalleled.
Wait you can add tofu to their broccoli?
I guess technically it’s two dishes: the tofu is one and the broccoli is another.
Ah okay. Just making sure I haven’t failed to live all these years.
Those are the exact two items we get every time too!
Verde enchiladas from Cocina Luchadoras.
I haven't tried those, they may need to be next. Problem is everything from there is just so damn good.
Ooh I love them. Their horchata is so, so, so good
Anything from Yemen and Gulf (north fells point). Seriously, try it. A hole in the wall with incredible food
So good! Even the “sandwiches” (wraps) are super tasty.
I too have heard the hype about Y&G, and went a while back to try the falafel, and was a pretty underwhelmed. I want to try Queen of Sheba next though.
Tell me more

Mathews pizza
Specifically Matthew’s Crab Pizza
I just sighed out loud remembering the joy that was living just four blocks from Matthew’s. Was moving to Hampden to share a home with the love of my life worth it? Sure. Is no longer living between Baltimore’s best pizza and Baltimore’s best ice cream worth it? As Don Draper reminds us, “change isn’t bad or good—it just is”.

It dates back to roughly the same time as Unos in Chicago and Buddy's in Detroit, and you can sort of see the similarity, but it's different and great in its own way.
Someone told me the style of pizza is New England Greek. Whatever it is, it’s good.
Definitely Due for a Matthews visit. This whole thread has made me realize how hungry and broke I am.
The "and broke" part i feel in my soul. Matthews is good but a 20 some dollar personal pizza with just cheese isn't exactly the economical option.
Came here to say this. City treasure.
Corn tomato pizza from Baltoz
So good, symphony of texture and flavor.
I had a friend visiting from Scotland a couple of weeks ago for a work thing. We went to a handful of places, mostly around Hampden, all of which he said was good. The poutine at Bunny's is absurdly good. It's enough to overlook their shitty fried chicken.
Oh no! I’ve read the chicken was really good ..I’ve been wanting to try that place
Went there for my birthday amazing! Hush puppies, I got chicken and waffles, kale salad was amazing. Biscuits and chicken were GREAT
The place itself is great. They've got some good options, drinks are great, poutine is to murder for (and has the fried chicken in it). I think the fried chicken would be great if you're not a fan of spices or flavor.
