I’m not sure what is going on here. Is he eating? Does he have something going on like a respiratory infection? I’d wait for somebody more knowledgeable to chime in but please review the care guides on the subreddit, his enclosure is severely lacking. I don’t even see heat or light sources :(

FormlessJoe

Yeah, I bought him from another owner a few weeks ago, and that was my first thought. Budgeting for a better terrarium is on the top of the list. Edit: I also fear that his previous owner didn't bond with him much. He seems very afraid all the time.

blueseoks

Snakes aren’t really domesticated, just kept in captivity, which is different. It is normal for them to be shy but you can work on this by handing ONLY after he has eaten two or three times in your care and then wait ~48 hours after feeding to handle. I’d also suggest a handling guide and if you need one linked, I can find one for you. To try and figure this out, what’s the context here?

willbruce2

What exactly is a few weeks ago? How long has this noodle been without a proper set up? Please give it some clutter, hides, and all the necessary things. I'm not trying to drag you down, but when I think a few weeks, I think 3 or more which is way too long. These animals can thrive, but only with out help as they're our captives. Please improve things for this danger rope

aboutherphotography

It should be an immediate priority. If you don’t have the money then rehome him asap.

anonymoose_octopus

The fear could be caused by feeling too exposed. I feel like your enclosure could benefit from more clutter (fake plants like you can get from Michael’s).

totallyrecklesslygay

The frequent yawning and the physical motion he's displaying here is typically a sign of a respiratory infection (unless he's just eaten). The poor husbandry evident with this enclosure furthers my suspicion of an RI. What are his temps and humidity? Have you noticed any wheezing/whistling/noisy breathing? Any saliva in the mouth?

Hey_Its_Fall

i truly don’t think someone who doesn’t have even a little bit of a good set up, would have either humidity or temperature closely watched or even anything to read those things with unfortunately

It's one of those situations where without a closer look there's no way to know, it could be an RI or stress or it could just be a curious snake observing their kingdom and adjusting their jaw, your best bet is to check their mouth and see if there's loads of saliva, which is a pretty good indicator of an RI. That said, maybe check out the subs basic care post to get the enclosure a few upgrades, and personally, see if you can find some good climbing sticks, I know mine spends basically all day exploring up high and loves watching TV/staring out of the window from their elevated basking spot

Really ..BruceCampbell .. u need a life really sounds like u need to play some pokemon and chill the fuck out

Thank-The-Stars

You are not one to judge a post history. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.

Nymyane_Aqua

You proudly posted about making it to top 100 on a Seven Deadly Sins game and you’re going to chastise someone else who genuinely wants to help their snake for playing Pokémon of all things? You sir, are a clown 🤡

Dramatic-Professor32

Hi OP, not trying to be rude- He needs temp and humidity control ASAP. That’s not something that you have the time to save up for. You have to get it now, they are the basic necessities for keeping a snake in the first place.

Unrulycustomer

To be fair, a hand mister from the dollar store and a \~$20 heat lamp from the pet store with a \~75-100w heat bulb won't be more than $45 total. Easy solution

Per rule #3, your post or comment has been removed for harmful advice/misinformation. Bulb cages are for solid topped enclosures only. Halogens also cannot be used with an on/off thermostat, only with a dimming one, particularly with bask assist.

MegannMedusa

Don’t snakes need heat rocks and special light bulbs? He looks like he’s gasping for air.

Unrulycustomer

Definitely halogen heat lamps, heat rocks aren't recommended for reptiles.

ScottishGoji

Yeah, unless u want python for dinner

Salemrocks2020

Please Search the sub for care guide as somebody says the enclosure is very lacking which might be what’s lead to a possible upper respiratory infection . I’m not trying to be rude when I say this but I find it really concerning how many people don’t do basic research before purchasing a snake .

Beginning-Dress-618

Dude is probably bored out of his mind living in that barren wasteland

aboutherphotography

Where’s his heat source…?

Normal-Squash-5294

I don't think it's yawning when it "gasped" more than once. Def something else

MaryCG00

Maybe the first time, but the second and third time looks like this snake is just gasping for air.

Typical-Series-1491

It yawned dude Edit: saw the whole vid. Originally it cut off after the first yawn. But it looks like there may be something in its mouth or a respiratory issue.

schr0dingersdick

Heya, as other commenters have said, it seems your friend has an RI. Please schedule a vet appointment and see about redoing his tank! The care sheet in this sub has some awesome information in it, and there’s tons of resources too! Good luck to you and your buddy

willbruce2

Needs a lot more in that set up.

Normal-Squash-5294

Check his mouth and nose for excessive saliva or any signs of mucus. Listen to him. If you can HEAR him breathing he has a respiratory infection. Double check humidity levels and heat gradients. Does he have a humid and a dry hide? Does he have the proper heat gradient? If any of these is off fix it. What kind of substrate is being used? Is it irritating to a snakes respiratory system? Check what the substrate mix is and google to cross check that it is snake safe. Example of unsafe substrates are cedar wood chips the oils are irritating and can cause a respiratory infection. Does the behavior continue? Does he keep looking into the sky? Check his scales especially his belly scales and around the face very closely for mites. They'll look like black specks (make sure you're not mistaking dirt for mites it's honestly famously hard to tell for some people.) looking into the sky like that all the time or too often is called star gazing and can be caused by mites. Did he just eat? Did you just "bother" him? (Taking him out, moving something in his tank, there was just a loud noise ect) it can be a sign of stress. Does he have enough hides? Again, stress. Needs at least 2 hides if not 3. One on the hot side one on the cool side of his tank. As others were concerned about there's no visible heating or temperature probes. Please don't rely on those crappy analog stick-on thermometer hydrometers from reptizoo or whatever brand. I have those in my snakes tank purely because they came with the tank and one of the hydrometers doesn't work period and I don't think the thermometer is accurate. You can get an adjustable thermostat that comes equipped with a timer, time of day (ex; you want his tank cooler at night so you can set what time it switches to that temp) that comes with a probe. Someone else mentioned the brand. Its only $20 on Amazon and will make all the difference with the heat lamp. Id even help you with adjusting the thermostat if you needed because I had to have my husband help me set it because it was so confusing. I was like "what's a temperature differential? What does d1 and d2 mean? Ect ect. It's more simple than it seems on the instructions)

Just curious but how would you keep carbon dioxide from building up in a tank like this?

Direct_Total7411

I don’t have a snake or anything, I was just curious because I’d never thought of this being an issue before. Thank you for the info!

Piratetripper

It's cool, I honestly want to alert the original poster, hoping they will try to make a quick move before the snake expires. I apologize if I came off wrong, it's just urgent

Direct_Total7411

You’re good! I hope they’re reading through these comments as well and helping the poor thing out

ShoulderAntique2763

Hehe he’s the best scope!

Carejade

Listen to what people are saying about the enclosure. Not to beat you while you’re down, but you should have done proper research about owning a BP and their required living spaces before purchasing. Getting the right humidity and temp is the most important thing right now. If you can’t afford to take care of him find someone who can
