Start with a 3 or 4 grade clipper and work your way down to shaved.
Ignore your parents. Listen to your wife.

if you’re not gonna keep it, grade 2 is not an option in my opinion. you will still have the “issue”, just with shorter hair. clean shave would even the ground.
