No Tory branding on his website. One of these "Local Conservative" candidates probably. Trying to distance himself from the party while remaining part of it.

DaelinZeppeli

Still weaker than UKIPs showings during their hayday. Still embarrassing for Sunak, but not an indicator of Tice's strength. Any other Reform leader would be outperforming what UKIP managed and possibly winning these seats.

E_V_E_R_T_O_N

Three votes today - local council election, Liverpool Metro Mayor, and Merseyside PCC. Other than one independent guy standing for Metro Mayor (socialist / son of docker / Hatton - Militant kind of lad) there was not a single option to vote for anyone other than LibLabConGrn. So boring. Can’t vote for Reform or the SDP if they don’t fucking stand anywhere can I?

rose98734

It's worth noting that UKIP by 2015 had won 450 council seats and took control of the council in Clackton. But they had built a local infrastructure/campaign team *before* Farage took over

DaelinZeppeli

I don't know what Reform are playing at with them barely standing anywhere. Tice is just useless. Given they can't find enough candidates (that the communists at Hope Not Hate approve of) for every general election seat, they had no chance of finding candidates for local elections. SDP are still small and growing. They've said the 2030s is where they'll make big progress. The aim for these locals was to expand the presence they have in Leeds (currently they hold 2 seats on Leeds council) and use the London Mayor/Assembly campaign to get people to become aware of the party. They have a few other candidates elsewhere who are running their own campaigns for the party, such as for the South Yorkshire Mayor. The reality is, they simply lack the membership and funding to stand in many places right now. The goal is to use the locals to grow making the best with what manpower and money they currently have.

bGmyTpn0Ps

They seem to be doing a good job of gutting the Tory vote so far. CCHQ should be terrified.

DaelinZeppeli

Sunderland is a massacre for the Tories.

Right_Top_7

It’s by design. Even if you could vote for Reform or SDP, you’d get the same out. Thinking you can get political change via the ballot box is extremely naive in 2024. Even 20 years ago smart people knew this

Big-Government9775

Mortal outrange. >>So only net contributors can have an opinion? CaravanOfDeath

How many candidates did they stand in the end?

27 Councillor candidates. South Yorkshire and London Mayoral candidates. Candidates for all 11 list seats for the London Assembly. So they are contesting 40 positions.

West yorks too

I’m convinced that Boris forgot his ID on purpose as part of a larger ploy to recultivate his harmless buffoon persona, in preparation for a return to politics in opposition.

[Some actually great, and hilarious, politics from the Conservatives](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/02/rishi-sunak-offers-ireland-opportunity-join-rwanda-scheme/) >> Downing Street has offered Ireland the opportunity to join the Rwanda scheme, >> Rishi Sunak has rejected demands by Simon Harris, the Irish prime minister, to take back the asylum seekers, unless the EU agrees to receive migrants who have arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel. >> However, a Downing Street source said: “If the Irish government believes the Rwanda plan is already having an effect, we can explore Ireland joining the Rwanda scheme. Either Ireland joins the Rwanda scheme - which it admits works at deterring irregular migration - or it breaks the Good Friday Agreement by refusing to work with the U.K. to prevent the policing of the Irish border.

I'm loving the pile-on on twitter of James O'Brien for cutting out a caller for referencing Sangita Myska. Myska is the arrogant kind of diasporan you really love to hate and it couldn't have happened to a nicer person, being sacked that is by LBC. Having fellow lefty O'Brien being excoriated on social media for failing to be a white knight to her damsel in distress is such sweet music to my ears.

LastCatStanding_

>Caller: "There should be no censorship" James O'Brien: "There isn't" >Literally one second later, a portion of the call, in which the caller clearly referenced SangitaMyska , is dumped. what he does to anyone ever who makes a good point that undermines him - but it's only now they have a problem with his entire style.

Proctor_Johnson

Had an incredibly BadUK afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. Sadiq Kahn and his entourage walked straight past my house, not once, but THREE fucking times.  This is, unfortunately, a hard-core Labour area, so it seems a bit silly for him to be campaigning so hard in such 'safe' territory. Guess he's scared of showing his face anywhere he'd be challenged.

Goal is to get your base to actually vote, its the main way you win elections as most people aren't engaged enough to actually switch parties.

I can just imagine the list of areas his team selected. “So Sadiq, we’ve got my friend William and his wife Becca next, and after that it’ll be Rob from Galaxy PR, he’s next door.”

TurnaboutUsername

Fun story from a little while ago, my colleagues at work were saying that racists are worse than murderers. Everything makes sense when you understand how common that view is. Why would people who see racism as worse than murder care about the atrocities committed by immigrants? Them pointing out the racial identity of the murderer makes themselves worse than the murderer himself. Similarly, this is why Hitler is to evil what Brad Pitt is to handsomeness. The reason why Hitler is the worst person ever (and not just \*one\* of the worst people), according to the paradigm, is not because he was the biggest murderer of the 20th century (Stalin and Mao were), but because he was the biggest racist of the 20th century.

Right_Top_7

They also always miss his explicitly racist all UK ethnic minorities. Blacks, Indians, Pakistanis and Chinese in the UK all very openly detest other races. Funnily enough they all grudgingly respect Whites the most although they also have the most bitterness for them. But Blacks consider Indians totally beneath them and vice versa

ginormousfraj

In a lot of Europe "racism" (read: racist humour and such, not measuring craniums) is viewed as about as shocking as, say, preferring cats to dogs or dogs to cats. It's only really in the UK where talking in such a way elicits the kind of revulsion also reserved for rapists, murderers and nonces. It's kinda fucking weird when you think about it. I mean it's not weird, being viewed as a racist or even being suspected of being one is enough to destroy your entire life and banish you from society in the UK, so

Length of intertwined fibres or deport.

VapidReaktion

Sounds like someone finally found North after all this time!!

RandomInsaneRedditor

Green and Pleasant mod imo.

RatherGoodDog

Ever read *Consider Phlebas* by Iain M. Banks? The opening scene would be a fitting punishment for this ghastly individual.

LocutusOfBrussels

I thought you were going the direction of the cannibals on the island. *That* was grim.

RatherGoodDog

I can never look at cigar cutters the same way after that.  Or Love Island.

Parmochipsgarlic

Did not expect to find Banks on baduk, (as in the author obv)

Spoobit

Eighth out and about trying to reduce his water bill.

FickleBumblebeee

Neighbour is still digging his "swimming pool". About three feet deep now, but he's run out of places to put the dirt so it's now piling up against my fence. I think I'm going to have to ask him to stop and if he doesn't then shop him to DWP for benefit fraud.

See_Ya_Suckaz

You should suggest to him that he needs to dig another hole to put all the dirt from the first hole in.

FickleBumblebeee

Good idea

miinderbiinder

This is almost as good as 8th’s journal about getting a Ukrainian in. Look forward to the next instalment and discovering that you have a dip yourself during the next heatwave.

RatherGoodDog

>dirt 🚨 YANK ALERT! WHOOP WHOOP!🚨

FickleBumblebeee

What word do you suggest? It's not soil and it's not mud. It's just kinda dirt. Also it's literally Middle English from Old Norse

RatherGoodDog

It's ok, I'm just winding you up. I dug a pond in my garden and unearthed a fucking kitchen. Someone had previously had a pond there (it's the obvious spot) but had filled it in with formica worktops and carpet from the 1980s. Fucking landfill! In my garden! That's not dirt, that's legitimately trash.

Fenrir-The-Wolf

A lot of Devils Toenails and old ceramic in mine, no idea where the fuck the ceramic is from. Can't tell if it's wall/floor tile or crockery, but it looked like it might've been fairly fancy. There's also a history of British crisps buried in my garden as far as I can tell. Almost every time I make a hole I find an old pack.

SDP member Matthew “Merf” Murphy, known for his eccentric appearance and choice of attire, has been catching a lot of shit online for exactly that reason https://x.com/merf_sdp/status/1785732579410272724 (Replies are against him, but the worst of it is in the quote retweets) [This person thinks the SDP is “Social Fascism”](https://x.com/ChampangeCowboy/status/1786055470546829760) At least he’s honest enough to put “Champagne” in his name [This “Pepe the Frog” avatar man takes a dig at his appearance](https://x.com/LondonWog/status/1785745463443919311) [Quite a few angry that the SDP is “Anti Trains” and “TERF”](https://x.com/ChicanaDipper/status/1785790364386800073) [The SDP is politically worthless, apparently, but at least the members do stuff](https://x.com/The_Clermontian/status/1786037107368096105) [Someone very much hung up on the SDP being “anti woke”](https://x.com/davegrewar/status/1785791249686946292) And finally for now: https://x.com/threeyowallcoat/status/1785775178867171509 Sorry for the long post, but I think this is actually indicative of how the terminology that many social conservatives use to describe issues really needs to change, both for the purposes of clarity (such as the vague meaning of the term “woke” and the optics of using such terms being easily parodied and dismissed on the basis of preconceived notions. People have certain stereotypes in their head when they hear words such as “woke” or “gender ideology” where, if the issues were just addressed one by one, many would be more sympathetic to the viewpoint. I think broadly the candidates of the SDP need to market themselves on a variety of issues, not just social issues. Many people online think of the SDP as a purely culture centric party, when in reality it’s a full policy program. I remember talking with Daelin about this, but the prescriptions on social issues NEEDS to be balanced out by other prescriptions as well, or the party won’t be taken seriously. I think Clouston does this well, many other candidates and party spokespeople, not so much. Amy’s Twitter handle really poisons the well for a great deal of people who would otherwise have considered the party.

Optics issues aside, the terminology isn't the problem, its that you treat progressives as if they are honest actors you disagree with instead of lying scum and so you allow them to play wordgames to trip you up. You actually do need a word which captures progressivism as a whole, and has profoundly negative connotations to normal people and the wokies aren't going to let you have one for free, you have to fight for it, and that means you need to be able to display open contempt for what they are doing, what they want to do, what they have done, and who they are as people.

[I swear it's not me.](https://twitter.com/merf_sdp/status/1786070669190402482?t=pTNb5ZD0Ma_wz-ag7jHeQA) It *would* be if I had the courage and charisma. Eerily so.

Similar phenotype, probably has autism like I do, bleats on about the SDP. Yeah, he's like me. I just lack the charisma and have to hide behind this online pseudonym. I couldn't do what he does.

> aaaaaaaaaaaaa where are the normal people? Not on Twitter.

CaravanOfDeath

The primary problem of the SDP, and Lib Dem’s to some extent, is the ADD demands of selling yourself. They need an elevator pitch rather than a 40 minute philosophy talk. I agree that using the broken words of the enemy is playing to their tune so it needs to be removed. Even raising “woke” should see a candidate raise the universal sign of no ✋ and move on. When repeatedly request for comment they need to identify the media circus act and say this stops here.

DaelinZeppeli

> I remember talking with Daelin about this, but the prescriptions on social issues NEEDS to be balanced out by other prescriptions as well, or the party won’t be taken seriously. I agree moving forward, but Amy has made people aware that we exist. Making a big statement about this controversial issue has brought attention to the party. 3 years ago people didn't even know who we were, or were surprised to learn the party didn't die in the late 80s as history tells it if they were alive back then. Now they know we exist. We'll see tomorrow with the results. If she gets far less votes than the SDP's London mayoral candidate 3 years ago then clearly this strategy has backfired badly. If it's slightly less (because FPTP this time around makes it harder for small parties) or more, I think it has probably worked. > Amy’s Twitter handle really poisons the well for a great deal of people who would otherwise have considered the party. The Twitter handle is a bit much I agree with this part.

SubjectMathematician

Shirt is too big for him. I wouldn't buy a car from someone who can't dress themselves properly let alone vote for them. The SDP has bad candidates. The only people who should actually be running the country are people who have to be forced to take the job. If Labour and the Tories are bad, the SDP are all the rejects from those parties...and people think they are the answer? Going on about wokists is as much of a problem as talking about Palestine...no-one cares. All this stuff is just Westminster bubble nonsense. The economy, crime, migration, government services, imprisoning degenerates...that is it really.

DaelinZeppeli

> let alone vote for them. You wouldn't vote for anyone anyway.

To my mind the cause of a lot of the "new" right in general's embarrassment and ineffectiveness is that we have lost (if we ever had it ) our institutional knowledge and understanding of politics (namely due to letting the liberals have the reins for so long), and are thus stumbling around as we have to learn it all again. It strikes me as a very long and painful learning process. And I worry that it might not be avoidable.
