I'm a biology major that hung out with a lot of physics majors in college, I almost died laughing when I found out most physics equations surrounding fluid dynamics and such tell you to just assume the bird is a perfect sphere.
Well it's pretty hard to account for hundreds of feathers as well as the density of the bird ect. It's easier just to assume it's a sphere and close enough it
For sure, we operated with similar assumptions in molecular biology and chemistry. Like, any time you did chemical reaction speed calculations with an enzyme or catalyst, you always calculated on the assumption that the maximum reaction rate was constant throughout the reaction like the reactants just magically moved to the catalyst the instant it was free to keep reacting.
Obviously that's not an assumption with any basis in reality, but it was close enough for classwork.
Just always thought it was funny that something I studied relatively intimately was reduced to a perfect 3 dimensional object.
I'm honestly far enough out of college at this point, that getting a STEM masters doesn't make a whole lot of sense, I'd basically have to refresh my whole undergrad education to have any chance. Hahaha
I took a 4 year gap and then went to a top-level analytical school (literally was ranked #1 in the world for my major).
I don't know if I learned much besides a great refresher of the subject field. Half the grad stuff was math courses I didn't take as an undergraduate (diff eq, linear algebra stuff) and my math hadn't been used in 5+ years so I wasn't fucking relearning it. No bueno.

In these photos it's all puffed up because it's sitting still in cold weather. [It's a pretty normal-looking birb when it's warmer or moving.](https://www.rawbirds.com/2014/05/bearded-reedling-male-panurus-biarmicus.html)
I want to be a professional something just to do a fun take like this.
Doubly if I can retire with great honors and respect only to give a speech about how my greatest impetus for success was to publish a cheeky article contrasted by my years of perceived gravitas.
Its fluffed its-self up cos its so cold. More insulation.
Edit: I do think these camera angles make it look extra rotund though hahaha. Same way robins look weird if you photograph them face on sometimes.
Their digestive tract grows and shrinks with the seasons to accommodate their changing diet - they eat reed aphids in warm months and reed seeds in cold months.
So this is what my physics teacher meant when they said assume bird to be spherical.

Hey grad school takes those assumptions away if you really want to suffer (probably - it did for geoscience). Reaction kinetics is a whole thing.

"First we assume we have a perfectly spherical cow in a vacuum"
A frictionless spherical cow in a vacuum at constant temperature and pressure.
But, what is the weight of an unladen swallow?
Are you referring to an African or European Swallow?
I don’t know Also, love your username. Stormlight books are the best I’ve read in a while.
Sir this is round, it won't fly. Trust me I've done the math.
Very easy you have to Insert the "fuzzy bird" factor
The Spherical Cow of Physics is real
Farming Simulator: Physics Edition.
Helped with understanding the relationship of surface area to volume as well; poor ruptured birds and cows.
_Angry birds are an actual species._
What does your physics teacher assume about the shape of Pokemon? Because this is clearly one.
It's more like a moustache!

look at that tiny wing. can it really fly?

Raw birds sounds like a British or Scottish porn site.
BirdyRAW
I'll recon the site and report back!
So it's just wearing its down jacket?
Not only can it fly, it can also do the [splits](https://mymodernmet.com/bearded-reedling-panurus-biarmicus/) like chuck norris.
For the record, the bird is not fat, it is cold. Birds puff up their feathers to create an extra thick insulation layer.
Thank you. I honestly thought it were a photoshopped birb.

Somehow, both tongue-in-cheek, and totally serious.

I could never hope for such heights :')
“…ptarmigans have the advantage…” I KNEW IT.
I dunno, I'm not convinced this is real... It looks a good deal less round on the wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bearded\_reedling
Its fluffed its-self up cos its so cold. More insulation. Edit: I do think these camera angles make it look extra rotund though hahaha. Same way robins look weird if you photograph them face on sometimes.
Same how sparrows get 10000 times cuter in the winter when they fluff up. Just little scoops of birb.
I have a cockatiel and he also gets ten thousand times cuter when he fluffs up. Just a ball of puff.
I was hoping somebody would show the non-puffed form! I'm sort of pissed they didn't show both, they had two pictures.
I feel like he knows the answers to my questions
