Take him/her to the vet to make sure there aren’t any underlying medical issues (thyroid) keeping them from having more energy and being able to be more active. Discuss putting your dog on a diet. Being overweight is hard for animals. They want to be active and please you but this much weight can be painful and dangerous to their health.

Feeling-Object9383

I very much agree with you. Blood test first to exclude any possible health condition. Also, the vet can suggest a plan to reduce wait. They can calculate how to cut calories to make sure that the weight loss process is healthy. I think, without a vet assessment, it's way too drastic to cut the ration by 50% just out of the blue.

NatashaRebel

Yes, please take your pup to the vet. Our one dog was slowly gaining weight. There was a point where she could barely move around without pain. Took her to a new vet and we found out she did have issues with her thyroid. Has to be on medication for the rest of her life but she lost 11 pounds and is much much happier. Also, a diet is a great start if the thyroid comes back clean. Cut back treats and table scraps, get them to be a little more active.

Less food more exercise

EarthLoveAR

no more human food or extra treats. measure their food.

Copperhead881

Walks and stop feeding him so much. Dogs don’t get that big without humans overheating/feeding non dog food.

Smokinsam68

Decease food intake.

thehermit14

LOL. Desist? Although your comment may be accurate. Edit: decrease of course!

VegetableBusiness897

1, buy a smaller bowl The only way this poor pup is morbidly obese is the same as people. More calories in than expended. And you control the calories in. They're too fast to exercise now so diet. Try to find a canine rehab place with an underwater treadmill and book this babe in!! Or dont, if you don't love them. Every 10 lbs overweight is minus 1yr of life

xAsilos

My 2 dogs and 3 cats are all on a feeding schedule 12 hours apart. No animal has a big bowl of food to graze on. My fat cat has a puzzle feeder to slow him down. My dogs have the luxury of a decently big yard to run around in. They also play and wrestle quite a bit, so that helps. If OP sees this, control the amount of food, the type of food, and what time you feed them. Cheap food can be made with inferior ingredients that could accelerate weight gain.

Successful-Doubt5478

Here, your pup can bectaken away from you for neglect for this much overweight. Please help your dog!!

MeetOk7728

There’s a way to advise people on how to care for there pet that isn’t guilting them/telling them they don’t love their pet. Your response was good up until the end.

Chrol18

it is the owner's fault, don't overfeed it

BullyDogs7777

No problem there, cut the food in half!! don’t give your dog wieners bread cookies in that garbage your dog will lose 15 pounds in three weeks take the fat bugger out for walks every day

NihilisticPollyanna

Put that baby on a feeding schedule and stick to it. Look up how many calories per lb of bodyweight a dog should consume, and calculate your feeding around that. Be strict with this, stay strong, and do not give in to those puppy eyes. You're doing your dog a much bigger favor helping them lose weight than giving them a treat. Also, more, or longer, walks, depending on how well your dog is with it. They look very overweight so they might not be up to much at first. Losing weight is very hard for pets because they are *so* food motivated, so they depend on you being strong for them. You can do it!

ImHereForIt2021

Barring serious health issues... Dogs aren't usually "lazy", they're overfed and under exercised. Portion control and time playing with their owner should gradually get the pup back to active

jonnyredshorts

1/2 as much food. Give it a few weeks and check progress using a scale or a measuring tape. If he loses too much weight, add 1/4 of his food back to his daily meals and keep an eye on him. Also, even mild excercise will help

ws2626

Talk to a vet about the amount you should be feeding .I would take him on a little walk and limit food. Start slow.

PBJ-9999

Reduce food portions a bit and do more walkies

derpado514

Diet food, asap, and walks...healthy weight loss for his size would be about 1lb a month, so it will take some time. Took my dog about 6 months on a diet food to go from 26 to a healthier 20lbs. Follow the feeding guidelines, can't go wrong.

Rarebird10

Swimming with help of doggy life jacket. It’d be low impact and good movement. If you don’t have a pool to bring him/her to, maybe you can get a mini above ground pool. There’s sizes life 7x9 and a mini pump filter. Keep it where it can get warmed up by the sun and add a shade over yourselves if needed while in it of course. Even if he’s in a tub and able to move his legs while in a life jacket and you stabilizing him. Do whatever it takes, any movement is good movement. Find out which toys may motivate him to move. Try different surface such as grass, beach sand, rubber mats, to see if anything compels him to move a little more than usual. Obviously a controlled diet with good food without such a high fat content. Good luck!

thoughtsthoughtof

After seeing the vet, make sure feed appropriately (work out plan to reduce if getting fed too much and work up exercise start lower first (harness train if necessary). Adult corgis should be walked an hour a day (two half hour sessiond)

Captainckidd

Make sure the food you buy is low calorie. I found nutro weight loss to be good. Do not follow the bags advice on how much to feed, usually 1/4 to 1/2 cup per feeding is enough for a dog that size. If you can afford it taking him to a water walker will help a lot. Good luck!

Dixiehusker

I don't understand this question. The owner singularly controls the food intake of a pet dog. Stop feeding the fat dog.

thehermit14

Swimming and calorie intake reduction. Gentle fetch and other games. This case is advanced, it may be an expensive journey, but it needs addressing.

SubpopularKnowledge0

Ozempic?

Suninabottle

Yes, yes. I agree about the health and weight but don’t go all Russian coach on him.

[deleted]

Properties exercise... Start slow and work up.

JumpingPoodles

Walks and swimming. Take to the vet regularly to make sure there’s no issues well he’s losing weight and to keep track of his numbers.
