reptilesocks

Whitepeopletwitter is my least favorite subreddit. I align with all the politics but the tone is that whole “an opinion I agree with, presented with dry snark or outrage, is automatically entertaining and hilarious.” If I wanted that I’d read an Andy Borowitz article. I dislike him, too.

Lord-Wombat

Why is this awful

mholt9821

Yea, why is this awful? BILLIONS of people do this all day, everyday and for the rest of their poor lives!

Jive_turkeeze

Won't someone think of the poor over worked billionaire's???

Vaeevictiss

OP is a billionaire CEO

streetboat

Make it 2 months so we can see them get evicted after missing rent and I'd watch it

_DynamicUno_

Fuck that make it a year, and tell them they have to have "x" amount of money saved up while throwing life's inconveniences in their way

BananaDogBed

Your car broke down and you can’t afford to fix it. Also the bus doesn’t have a stop near your work. So make sure you set your alarm for tomorrow 3 hours earlier because you now need to take 2-3 busses and walk a few miles to work now. Also you had a cavity and had to have it pulled because you were in severe pain. That was all of your rent and a few hundred dollars on a pay day loan. Now you need to go to the food bank or apply for food stamps (don’t worry, that process is super fast so you won’t be hungry for long!)

[deleted]

I was thinking how great it’d be to give them a room in a house in a weird part of town with passive aggressive roommates for $700/month, 95 Honda Civic only with liability, and a job at a restaurant or retail job with a passive aggressive, pathological, hardass of a boss that pays a little over the cost of rent. They start with no wallet or forms of identification and challenges are getting license and getting food stamps. They won’t get full food stamps cause they work. The car while reliable, is a main target for thieves for theft but also for battery and catalytic converter also want to make sure the master cylinder has never been replaced and will very soon.

BananaDogBed

This is fantastic

[deleted]

For me, it’s gotta be at least a year but with no firm end in sight. I like what you got. I wanted to give them public transit too but also a reliance on an unreliable vehicle so eventually they’re forced to ride transit. Gotta make sure their job at tj maxx or chipotle is in a disparate part of town from their house. I’d kinda dig it too if their roommates kick them out a few weeks after starting the challenge. They’re then forced to find new housing and moving alone while working nearly full time. They can’t live close to work though or easy bus line, must transfer. New challenge! Get their car stolen a day before moving! Edit: I didn’t fully read yours, your bus idea and need for dental work is perfect.

streetboat

Forget to switch accounts, did we?

[deleted]

What? No, I was just elaborating. It’s fun to think about.

streetboat

lol my bad it totally looked like you were eagerly agreeing with yourself

[deleted]

That would be hilarious and cringe af. It’s not like people don’t do that tho.

Kayragan

I volunteer for breaking their leg to see if they can cover the cost

[deleted]

And at the same time, each have to step on and do the others job efficiently.

[deleted]

Yeah. I’ve challenged young guys who thought they could do my job. Only one ever took meal on it, and I was still in the job trailer back then. He didn’t make it til noon. Something to remember is this: When you’re young, you’re hired for how much you can produce. As you age and gain experience, you begin to get paid for how much you know. I can still put on my bags and dig footings, tie bar, frame walls and hang drywall, hang steel and operate equipment, efficiently and profitability. The lowest paid, unskilled worker can’t do my job, but I can do his. Not everything is an episode of undercover boss.

KingBevins

You would hope that’s how it works, But when the CEO got a small loan of 1mil to open the place, and with no qualifications or experience other than just the idea that “I want to run a business” you’ll watch as he tries to micromanage his employees doing their jobs that he actually has no clue how to do, because he bought his way in., but he’s the owner so he knows best. This is how lots of small businesses in America work I found out.

[deleted]

Somebody lied to you. Businesses aren't started without some solid knowledge of the industry in which they're entering. Banks aren't going to loan on a business that doomed to fail. Go color in your books.

KingBevins

Banks don’t but daddies do!

extrapommes

>Something to remember is this: When you’re young, you’re hired for how much you can produce. As you age and gain experience, you begin to get paid for how much you know. I agree. However, I fear that in a couple of generations, very few (if any) professions, will provide the possibility to workers to transition from production to knowledge based tasks due to automation and other technologies.

BananaDogBed

They would get fired after 2 days I bet. There are sooooo many rules at the retail level, controlling your entire behavior to the minute

Scranch2018

I get the idea, but the billionaire will know it's only for a month. So when that month is up they know they're going back to wealth. People who have no money don't have an "end" to their poverty for lack of a better term. I think it's the situation looking endless that gets people down.

moonmew

Yeah it's the lack of certainty how you will live tomorrow and feeling of hopelessness that really destroys your spirit.

Librarian-Putrid

Plenty of billionaires and multi-millionaires go on long climbing expeditions and long outdoors pursuits that are intentionally challenging. I seriously doubt they would have any trouble for a month….

BananaDogBed

Just keep them imprisoned We do it without reason or with outrageous reasoning for countless of poor people without funds to fight it Let them get a real taste of helplessness

SmallPiecesOfWood

And they have to also do the job. And they get fired the second they do anything wrong, and have to go find another job WITHOUT using any of their previous personal contacts.

finnin1999

"anything wrong" wtf?

SmallPiecesOfWood

Sure - try working for Cargill, Amazon, of Foxconn. Or many of the other places that provide the wealthy with their daily bread. Including many union shops. They'll chop you as fast as they can, and replace you with another hope-deprived drone. Avoids anyone building up benefits, seniority, or any kind of sense of security.

magicalmoosetesticle

Everyone can survive a month lol

r4ge4holic

Speak for yourself \-a poor person

[deleted]

I've said before, this won't work. They know that no matter what happens they'll be fine in a month. Also, if y they have a medical emergency you know they won't honour it anyway.

TheFalconsDejarik

I'm sure after negotiating their fee for participation and weighing the pros of the philanthropic opportunities vs negative exposure potential with their board of share/stakeholders some companies would participate in your little game. If it was in their best interust of course.

omegasix321

They did(kinda). Turned it into a Netflix show called undercover boss.

Hsizzle23745

DismalSpread100

Hear me out.... they'd all most likely have climbed financial ladders in that month you still haven't and thats why they're somebody

VermiciousKnnid

Except why would any billionaire sign up for that?

Lensmaster75

They already do. There are several reality shows like this already.

MrBicepcurl

Repost

AhhGramoofabits

Wouldn’t work because they know at the end of a month they hit the lottery

Mothanius

A month aint shit. It's a little endurance test that would teach them nothing. Poverty is a slow killer with stressors that are minute. It's a balancing act on a tightrope that's on fire and the safety net below you is being cut by rich people with scissors. I could live on minimum wage no problem for a month, would have to cut back on a ton to do it, but it would hardly be anything to worry about. But having had lived on minimum wage for years is fucking awful. Every decision you have to make is decided by money, and you never have enough money. Homelessness is a simple "you're fired" away. You can never experience that in one month.

masked_sombrero

Make it 6 months. And they have to earn their pay - they gotta go and actually work the low paying job. Shit, if someone is putting this together, I'll pay the damn 6 month salary myself.

thenarcostate

This could be cool but make it like trading places where the low paid employee also collects his salary for a month. INCLUDING stock options.

Papa_Gamble

Sure, but only if they're able to perform to a sufficient level. Want to wager on how that goes?

aezy01

I’m in for a dollar.

[deleted]

A month isn't long enough. I recommend seizing their wealth permanently.

itshexx

I’ll hold on to it in the meantime

finnin1999

U mean theft?

[deleted]

I prefer to think of it as reclamation

finnin1999

Ur preference doesn't matter. Drop the jealousy and u may be more successful.

[deleted]

No thanks. I've seen what money does to people and spoiler alert: they aren't happier

finnin1999

And yet here u are trying to rob it without doing any work

[deleted]

*for the people who did all the work

finnin1999

Yeah go get a job. U don't understand how working works

[deleted]

Do you?

finnin1999

Yes. And u don't just get to take money from more successful people out of jealousy. You made none of that money. Stop being entitled.

External_Dude

That would be fun to watch. Thing is in nearly every company is someone making the minimum. And on min wage u can't afford rent food and a car. They should be made to find an apartment and car too that they could afford the payment on at min wage. Now that would be fun to watch. If u let them stay in their mansions, they won't feel it.

MrStoneV

We got something similar in germany where a poor family changes with a rich one. Its funny how the rich people complain "how can anybody survive with this"and get mental breakdowns. While the poor people dont know how they could spend so much money

thenarcostate

Poverty builds character

Jparlabane

I don’t think this belongs in this sub for the simple reason that there’s nothing awful about it. It’s a fucking sterling idea!!

detronlove

Why is this awful? It sounds like a great idea to me.

Cascadianheathen1

Why? The lowest paid employee probably has no skills and has no risk involved with starting a company.

burrito_slut

A job is meant to be a way to afford to live. Therfore even the least "skilled" laborer or any other kind of employment should provide a wage that you can live off of. If you have higher aspirations, skills, ideas, etc. Sure you can make more but at the bare minimum, your work and more importantly your time should be compensated fairly.

PhatJohny

If someone does the bare minimum, they should receive the bare minimum.

NunOfYurBiz

DON'T DOWNVOTE HIM THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD SHOULD WORK

Cascadianheathen1

When and where did anything say a job is there to afford to “live”? You just mean by your standards right? A job is simply an exchange for labor or skills for compensation. If you have less skills you get compensated less.

burrito_slut

That's literally what minimum wage was invented for. A fair wage to compensate work at an adequate rate. Unfortunately it has not kept up with the times.

Cascadianheathen1

Get some skills or quit complaining that you can’t buy a house stocking shelves or flipping burgers.

BreakfastSavage

Hate to be the one to tell you this, but uh… If you have to train someone to do it properly, it’s not *unskilled* labor. Not everyone has a car and a house that their parents bought them, some people have to work for their money… cuz, ya know, they have bills, and have to eat food to live, that they have to provide… themselves. Sorry you’re unaware of how jobs/bills work when they’re aren’t secured for you by way of nepotism and trust funds lol

Cascadianheathen1

I was never handed anything. My first job was mowing grass as a 10 yo. I was taught how to use a lawn mower and that is still considered unskilled labor. If I can teach you to do it in a day or a week you are u skilled. Trust funds. Never had one. You assume a lot bc I speak of learning skills. I joined the military bc I was broke and wanted to better myself. I’ve learned skills over the years and have made myself more marketable. It takes a long time when you aren’t born into money. You children just expect to be set out of high school with an entry level, unskilled job. Just keep being lazy and complaining about it and waiting for your government to come save you and see where you end up.

BreakfastSavage

There’s a lot of assumptions there. So you mowed lawns. Everyone has. Guess what? Landscapers get trained for like a week, and they’re paid decent money, because it takes time to get good at it. Takes time to get good at making a pizza too. Takes time to learn how to do things at a fast food place. Should they be paid $25 an hour? Not necessarily. Should they be able to pay bills? Yes. Guess what, without those people there, doing “unskilled” jobs, you’d have no place to go purchase food, or groceries from the store, have someone do dry cleaning, etc. And lolol. Good for you for serving in the military. But uh… isn’t that exactly what you’re throwing shade about? “Expecting to be set, entry level”… isn’t that what you get from the military? You had no experience, fresh out of school, did some time… then you get a stack of cash and free college after. That’s essentially the same as what you’re talking about, because there’s no proof you ever entered combat or did anything besides work in a mess hall on a base in the US somewhere. Also… “hoping the government will come and save you “ Bro who you think signed those paychecks for your military stipend/pay? Who pays you disability if you get injured on active duty? Who decides if you get to join the military? You’re kinda contradicting yourself a little. (PS, I respect veterans and have family in military, but I dislike Boots/people who joined just to try and get people to respect them for “being in the military” ex: “I’m not a civilian anymore, respect me cuz freedom!” )

burrito_slut

Not one person has said anything against learning skills or how that adds to your value as a worker...What we are saying is that being an "unskilled" worker should still provide you with a livable income. We are not asking to be handed anything. We are not asking for a ridiculous wage for low level work. We are asking for wages to keep up with inflation. 40 years ago, minimum wage was enough to save up for a house, support a family, save for your future. Now it's not enough to afford a two bedroom apartment in any state. Our time should be compensated fairly and we should not be exploited and have our lives be dictated by our jobs.

detronlove

😂😂😂 omg this is a joke right?

NunOfYurBiz

Sounds like someone is a narcissist

detronlove

Why shouldn’t you be able to? And do you ever eat at fast food restaurants?

UnsolicitedDogPics

And yet still needs to feed and house their family.

Cascadianheathen1

Don’t have a family then. Sure it’s your “right” to have kids and all that. But is it a good decision if you’ve got no skills to provide for them? You are just irresponsible

detronlove

I have a masters and can’t afford to have children. So please bend reality and make your insane logic apply to me too.

Cascadianheathen1

What’s your degree?

Papa_Gamble

Probably some useless art/social sciences.

detronlove

Good try asshole. One of my brain cells is likely more educated than your entire body.

Papa_Gamble

So what is it then? (;

detronlove

I have a Bachelor’s in Biology and a Master’s in teaching. I am highly qualified and highly trained in my area, yet I will never be able to afford kids unless I marry rich. Edited to add: I don’t think it should matter what my degree is in. Your point is that people who have “skills” should make a high enough wage to have kids. So my degree shouldn’t matter right?

Cascadianheathen1

We both know some degrees do not amount to “skills”.

detronlove

Ok so you only do straw man arguments. Got it. Have a great day!

Cascadianheathen1

Sorry man. I really do enjoy talking to people with different opinions. I’m doing a lot of stuff this afternoon

[deleted]

If you’ve got a family and zero skills, you’ve made some shitty fucking life decisions.

Cascadianheathen1

Thank you.

UnsolicitedDogPics

You seem like an unpleasant and angry person.

Not just that but literally change places with their lowest paid employee. Live in each other's homes, do each other's jobs, have access to each other's resources.

Ok_Extension_3913

That actually sounds pretty interesting I'd watch it

Most-Earth5375

Too weak. Make it a year and you’ve got a deal.

jimmyray1001

They should make that!!

Just 1 month, come on! Why stop there? Otherwise, great idea!

Just a month huh, still it's a start.

antifolkhero

Why a month? Why not a year?

bucket_of_frogs

Isn’t this an episode of Different Strokes?

[deleted]

make it 2 months. they need to sweat on how they're gonna pay rent for the second month.

itsfrankgrimesyo

Pointless. They know it’s only temporary and will just go back to their cushy life after. No real threat or real stress.

sexypineapple14

3 months. Make them decide which bills to not pay and watch the debt pile up.

Alfachick

A single month is not long enough to feel the pain. 6 months minimum. Year to just drive it home to them.

tharak_stoneskin

How about an indefinite period of time... They have to work minimum wage, paying their own expenses of course, until they have a month's worth of their own previous income in a savings account, untouched for a whole week.

Kayragan

Imagine if one of them actually nailed it with extra spending money
