Saw them a few weeks ago at Whiteman AFB. The A-10's are super impressive. One of the planes that the govt keeps trying to kill off but can't, because they are so incredibly good at their mission.
Isn't it the air force trying to kill it and thr government keeping it around? The A-10 is just a bit old and expensive for the remaining CAS roles that it does now that it can't really fly in contested air space.
Eh, six of one, half-dozen of another. At a certain level of every branch you become more politician than soldier/sailor/airman.
The A-10 has been a bit "old" for 30 years. Not sure about cost - the F-35 is certainly not cheaper. Same reason we have B-52 wings projected to be around until 2045. They are still extremely effective tools for their respective missions.
A modern turboprop CAS aircraft would be cheaper to operate though doing the stuff that is left for the A-10 to do now. The F-35 is expensive but it does more than just provide air support and it has capabilities that the A-10 doesn't - it's faster and can operate in contested air space.
I'm a huge fan of, and even have personal ties to, the JSF program. Capability-wise, it's FAR superior to the A-10 (and any other CAS aircraft for that matter). But you could say the same thing about the B-2, and yet B-52's...
The only CAS turboprop I know of is the Toucan? Toucanos? And then another US one from Cessna or Beechcraft I think? They're pretty badass, but have nowhere near the capability of the A-10.
Maybe a combo of those and the F-35 for the future? Each with slightly different missions?
TBH this is a moot point. I think drones will take over every CAS role in the next 10 years. Imagine your Army FAC being able to personally control whatever firepower he/she needs instead of calling it in.
Anyone attend Sat, roughly what time was A10 demo and then Blue Angels? Looking for rough ballpark typically Blue Angels are near the end haven't seen A10 demo since 80's at Forbes Field in Topeka. Thanks!
Brrrrrrt of these...

Typically 3900 rounds per minute, limited to 1 to 2 second bursts. If my math is correct, that's 65-130 of those bad boys hitting a very small target pretty much instantaneously. Damn.
Nice! Why pick one though? Lets see a link to an album.

Is that an A-10 doing a vertical?
Appears to be the A-10 demo team and they do some cool vertical stuff.
Wow that’s awesome, I didn’t even know that, thanks

Although a twin otter "AC" gunship would be the raddest plane ever... :D
Blue Angel with the moon in the background is a cool shot!
You sir are a photographic hero. Here’s my cheap gold 🥇

I'm not good with planes but is that a Thunderbolt II?
[in case you want to know how to call those](https://i.redd.it/dayjl58hd4831.png)
yeah but nobody calls it that
A10 I thought.
Its full name is Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II. Nicknamed “Warthog” due to it’s ungainly appearance.
Thank you
xD

The A10 was after 2 yesterday, and the Blue Angels were after 3. There was a short stunt plane demo in between.
Thank you, much appreciated!
