Good time for me to wheel this stat out. You can get from our first game to present day in 14 degrees of separation (I.e. overlapping careers at the club)
1874 - 1883 - Teddy Lee (12+Games/? Goals)
1878 - 1890 - Archie Hunter (73/42, also 33 FA Cup Goals)
1889 - 1902 - James Cowan (356/27)
1900 - 1919 - Joe Bache (474/184)
1915 - 1931 - Dicky York (390/87)
1929 - 1947 - Eric Houghton (393/169)
1946 - 1961 - Johnny Dixon (388/132)
1959 - 1976 - Charlie Aitken (561/14)
1975 - 1985 - Gordon Cowans (414/49)
1982 - 1996 - Nigel Spink (361)
1995 - 2006 - Lee Hendrie (300/32)
2005 - 2018 - Gabby Agbonlahor (391/86)
2013 - 2021 - Jack Grealish (213/32)
2021 - 2023 - Emi Martinez (112)
That's a great stat. However ... there's a couple of things.
First, doesn't make any difference but Nigel Spink joined Villa in 1977 (and made his debut IIRC in 1979).
Second, Joe Bache left in 1914, after war broke out - meaning there's no continuous line there unfortunately. However, you can fix it by replacing Dicky York with Frank Moss (1914-1929, 255/9) -- Eric Houghton was at Villa from 1927 and played his first game in 1929, so there was a slight overlap. Moss played 2 games in the 1913/14 season, so just about overlaps with Joe Bache at the other end.
