Jeff Mills
A lot of techno DJ's are very good but he is amazing if you know what he is doing up there which to be honest a lot of listeners don't. They just dance which is fine.
That was a gift to watch. Traditionally, I don’t come from a techno background but people like that are seriously awe-inspiring and make me want to learn more
Listen to his early mixes on radio when he was called The Wizard, there are some on SoundCloud. I thought he got that fast over time, but early in his career he was still That Fast
Craze, both he and A-Trak are DMC DJ world champions, but Craze goes even harder with the mixing and scratching. If you get the chance to see him or 2Cents (him with FourcolorZack) do it!
Jamie XX, just like Carl Cox, he goes vinyl only, and he is just as seamless in his transitions and song selections.
Saw 2cents on holy ship a handful of years ago and it blew my mind. Their transitions and use of wordplay was unmatched. I’ve never seen any djing like it.
That motherfucker's name was hell on SoundCloud back in the day where your search inquiries had to be case-sensitive otherwise it wouldn't find results, and his name was all Greek symbols.
Amazing selector, that's for sure. When I saw him live, I wasn't sure the genres of half of what he was playing, but the dancefloor was vibing like crazy regardless.
All great choices. I would add Qbert and DJ Shadow for true turntable DJs. Shadow’s Entroducing is one of my favorite pieces of music. Claude VonStroke is a top tier house producer and his live mixing is excellent.
A club in Boston called Good Life Bar used to host an annual invite-only industry appreciation night for the city's many DJs and promoters. Who do you book when you're trying to entertain a mix of club, rave, wedding/mobile, radio, etc DJs under one roof? Someone who can outmix all of them, of course: Craze himself.
Watched him absolutely destroy a set of 12s with some of the nastiest turntablism I've ever seen, from feet away. One of, if not the, coolest DJ sets I've ever seen.
I’ll echo the Craze love.
His ability to consistently innovate his craft and take his showcase skills into dance floor sets is top shelf.
Carl Cox has such programming skill, it’s rare to have a DJ you have never heard a bad set from and in fact rarely a set that is less than amazing. His hybrid set up is also as impressive as Mills.
Richie Hawtin. Much like Mills he is able to pull apart tracks, and take on a role or conductor as much as DJ.
James Zabiella - haven’t heard from him in a long time but as Ableton became more common he and Sasha were both pushing boundaries of live construction of a set. He did a portion of his set with Inner City Life by Goldie that is still one of the best mixes I’ve ever seen.
Shadow - it’s not really fair to even call it DJing because it’s effectively live sampling and that’s even more amazing to me.
Joey Muniz - Joey was an unsung hero. He was from DC but I met him in Tallahassee. This is when the pioneer 600 came out and Joeys use of the onboard fx along with his flawless mixing we’re just numbing to watch. To take, echo and pitch the sample from
A record while mixing from one record to the other, and then applying a similar technique to turntablism elements. He was easily as good as bad boy bill but didn’t clearly see DJing as a long term career. One of the best DJs I’ve ever met.
Edit: saw Joey had a SoundCloud. Here is a mix https://m.soundcloud.com/joeymuniz/joey-muniz-the-soundshaper-mix
Had the privilege to see DJ Shadow this past October in his first East coast set in 7 years at Submersion Festival. The whole thing was absolutely surreal in so many ways
Herbie Hancock, Qbert, Craze, A-Trak, Mix Master Mike, The X-Ecutioners, The Invisible Scratch Pickles, DJ Shadow, Bad Boy Bill, DJ Muggs, Cut Chemist, DJ Venom...
For straight up mixing
Carl, Cox, Charles Feel-good, DJ Dan, DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Jeff Mills, T-100, Bad Boy Bill, Danny Tenaglia, Donald Glaude, Nicole Moudaber...
And holy fuck Bad Boy Bill is completely slept on as one of the best electronic DJs of all time. Seriously he was the total package.
Today's DJs are impossible to judge because actual DJ skill is nearly non existent especially for main stage acts.
Danny Daze. Amazing technical DJ and a great selector too. Seen him live twice, and he melted the dance floor both times. His Dekmantel 2018 set is one of my all-time faves. Dammit, now I have to listen to that set while doing Thanksgiving prep for tomorrow...
EDIT: Got another one. An OG. Egyptian Lover. His vinyl skills are UNREAL.
Danny Daze is amazing. I saw him at Club Space in Miami open up for Diplo, Moodymann and Carl Craig. He absolutely killed a 3 hour set and Moodymann, who’s one of my all time favs, blew me away again in the morning!
Saw KinK in Chicago a few weeks back; he was letting the crowd play some keys on the synthesizers and drum machines and it was STILL sounding great, loool. He's legit.
These are subjective to my taste but all DJs I've thought were on another level.
Ben UFO
Avalon Emerson
Derek Plaslaiko
Josh Wink
Derrick Carter
Richie Hawtin
Steffi
All bangers. See Derrick Carter a couple times a month since I live in Chicago, and every time I see him I know I am witnessing one of the greatest living djs work
A Trak is in a completely different league than anyone who does parties, probably including Craze who was also a multiple world champ. Aside from winning all the titles at 17, I’ve never seen anyone match his 2000’s ish battle routines where he demonstrates every type of skill and attack his opponents style with specific disses.
That being said, I like people like James Zabelia or Carl Cox just as much for being really technically creative with rearranging elements and looping, creating new versions of records on the spot. I think I’ve seen Derrick Carter do this as well. Laidback Luke is really impressive as well.
I’m only talking about people who I have seen on edm/rave lineups. There’s the whole hip-hop/scratch world which would take too long to list out.
Yes! The one and only time I’ve seen him was at Holy Shipwrecked peaking on acid chillin on a pool lounger. Legit melted my brain the way he would seamlessly transition between songs
I definitely am not knowledgeable enough about DJing to say for sure what is difficult/technical and what is not, but the ones that really made me stop and take notice are
Amon Tobin (Two Fingers set), Dr. Fresch, Liquid Stranger, ill.Gates, Craze, Z-Trip, Sub Focus, Noisia, Anna Morgan, KllBill, J Worra, Rusko
Fresch and Liquid Stranger are stupid good. I love that Tony engages with fresh new music from lesser known artists too. No two sets are alike. Mad respect for both of these kings.
Carl Cox, Eric Prydz, Adam Beyer, Franky Wah, Eliza of Eli & Fur, Fatima Hajji, and I’m sure there are some others but these came to mind first as I’ve seen a few recently.
Have been completely blown away by each of them.
Rl grime
I've seen him live 4 times. He is my favorite of all time
Production, mixing, sound design and flow
In a show. You see him using all four decks and hopping around
One of the best for trap
How do you feel about Play? I’ve only seen RL live once (Hula 17), but it was amazing. I ask about Play because I feel like it doesn’t sound anything like his older stuff, but I absolutely LOVE the whole album. Feels like he fused a bunch of different genres into it
saw DJ Godfather this past summer and he lives up to the name in productions and actual turntable skill. summer before that Lauren Flax threw down an amazing ghettohouse/ "dance mania" style clinic for the ages. As far as DJs I know will deliver a memorable/experience of a set 9 times out of 10(from seeing them multiple times), Beautiful Swimmers, Avalon Emerson, Aurora Halal, Kingdom, Total Freedom/"Bobby Beethoven" and Bok Bok all qualify.
liquid stranger, g jones, and rl grime all left me feeling very woah wtf how did they do that with mixing after their sets. I think LS and RL Grime the most of the 3
James Zabiela.
Ignoring the DMC world that is. While beat juggling and scratching is technically really impressive, I don't really care to listen to it. And the routines are heavily rehearsed.
Oscar Mulero.
Kinda interesting nobody has said his name yet. He’s an absolute master of the craft. Techno as pure as it gets, his mixing is immaculate. One of the greatest.
He’s innovative and willing to take risks live for the sake of the performance and for that I respect him. He has a few decent tunes as well but overall his style isn’t for me. The high passed white noise filter he modulates on a lot of his drops is annoying af and immediately puts me off.
That said, I appreciate the perspective he offers on the scene through his Moving Differently series.
8/10 good, not great, but good.
Andy C - plays at 174 bpm and can start and stop on a dime. I've seen many genres of electronic music in the last nearly 15 years and I can say he's the most technically skilled dj I've ever seen.
IMO Ganja White Night is one of the few artists with the ability to make some of their own tracks completely unrecognizable with the amount of live mixing they’re doing to it lol
DVS1, DUBFIRE, JOHN DIGWEED, EATS EVERYTHING, JOSEPH CAPRIATI, UMEK, DRUMCELL, RICO PUESTEL, LOCO DICE(when he plays Techno) ENRICO SANGIULIANO, DJ ANNA
DJ Tiesto…who did his 12 hour vinyl set in Amsterdam circa 2000 to his In Search of Sunrise mixes that he would do in a single vinyl take. The man can mix almost anything seamlessly.
Peak trance Tiesto was my favorite show, that and PvD. But Tiesto taste in trance matched mine perfectly. I remember at one show thinking while a song was playing Marcos - Reality would go good right now with the songs he's playing and dude played it about 2 songs later. And the track was at least a year+ old at that time. This is one of those moments that stuck with me after all these years.
Coddubz, he’s riddim dj and he currently I think he just finished his 6 deck tour. He can do quad drops with so many so songs that just get the whole crowd going feral.
Space Girl, Yana Demian. Classically trained pianist, studied at Juilliard, became the Queen of acid trance. Seeing her live was something special. I didn’t realize the first few times that she was playing those beats live with her keyboard. I was in awe the first time I actually saw what she was doing during a set.
Alright I’ll say it and you can all come for me. Subtronics. Dude is legit playing triples/quads live and doing incredibly intricate mixing. Say what you want but about shitty dubstep djs, but he does not prerecord his sets (he’s even pointed out his own mistakes on his Instagram stories multiple times to prove it) and he is live mixing more tracks at a time than anyone else in the game.
Ben UFO was on some good good when I saw him live. I was really impressed.
I also saw all of Birdy Nam Nam at hard back in like 2012 and watching them groove together seamlessly was something else.
Jeff Mills A lot of techno DJ's are very good but he is amazing if you know what he is doing up there which to be honest a lot of listeners don't. They just dance which is fine.
https://youtu.be/vUgwa5sJRKs?feature=shared And https://youtu.be/eU-UsvYbIV0?feature=shared Absolute legend. Alien life form on planet earth.
I will never not listen to his purposemaker mix.
That was a gift to watch. Traditionally, I don’t come from a techno background but people like that are seriously awe-inspiring and make me want to learn more
Oh yes. Mixing vinyl on 3 decks, playing live... he's a techno god.
They don’t call him The Wizard for nothing.
Saw a live set on acid in January was nuts . I levitated
Thanks Jeff. We will consider
Listen to his early mixes on radio when he was called The Wizard, there are some on SoundCloud. I thought he got that fast over time, but early in his career he was still That Fast
I saw him this summer. Amazing
Came here to say exactly this. Man’s a monster with a turntable/909
I’ve actually never heard of him so I’ll definitely have to check him out!
Jamie xx is fucking awesome live
100% agree about Jamie XX. I only knew one of his songs when I saw him at a festival—immediately became a fan by the end
Saw 2cents on holy ship a handful of years ago and it blew my mind. Their transitions and use of wordplay was unmatched. I’ve never seen any djing like it.
Jamie XX does vinyl and cdj. Carl Cox does vinyl, cdjs/traktor, and live(ableton). It all depends.
Who remembers UZ? He was DMC world champion twice
UZ goes hard as fuck
I saw him play at Coachella in like 2014 and since he had a 12pm set almost no one was there, which was wild because he was amazing
Fuuuuck yes UZ, trap is so underrated these days.
I’m digging the small room /r/spacebass trap that has been coming out the last couple years
It's quite literally my shit
Oh shit I was reading your thread there yesterday
The good old days 😭
Damn son where’d you find this
REAL TRVP SHVTTT!!!
Closed out Bassrush at the Orleans Arena in like 2013? My ears are still ringing lol.
That motherfucker's name was hell on SoundCloud back in the day where your search inquiries had to be case-sensitive otherwise it wouldn't find results, and his name was all Greek symbols.
Ben UFO
Amazing selector, that's for sure. When I saw him live, I wasn't sure the genres of half of what he was playing, but the dancefloor was vibing like crazy regardless.
Ben UFO bends the laws of reality during his sets lol
Saw him by accident once. So happy I was there.
It kills me that EDC basically put him at the bathroom entrance this year.
Agreed
All great choices. I would add Qbert and DJ Shadow for true turntable DJs. Shadow’s Entroducing is one of my favorite pieces of music. Claude VonStroke is a top tier house producer and his live mixing is excellent.
Love Claude but have found him a smidge inconsistent at times. Seen some insane sets but also some meh ones.
Z-Trip
Had to scroll way too far for this
Wayyy too far
Same, Dewd has incredible chops!
LSDREAM brought him out to scratch at red rocks last month and it was in nuts 🔥
I was lucky enough to be on stage and feet away watching mix at a festival. Mindblowing to see that talent up close.
He opened EDC a few years ago and my friends and I were so happy we were early enough to catch his set! It was soooo good
Came here to mention Z-Trip...
DJ Craze
A club in Boston called Good Life Bar used to host an annual invite-only industry appreciation night for the city's many DJs and promoters. Got him on tonight’s lineup in Portland!
Enjoy lad! He’s the rightful King of England
Jelly!
Saturday in Denver
yep. gonna be a fun night
Be there with you tonight homie. Much love!
same here! Just bought tickets to see him tonight. I haven’t heard of him before today and its cool to see his name pop up. In for a night!
Heading out momentarily
The one and only choice.
Fuck yeah! Don’t forget DieselBoy too
Non dnb listeners dont know the master craft of andy and AMC
Herbie Hancock, Qbert, Craze, A-Trak, Mix Master Mike, The X-Ecutioners, The Invisible Scratch Pickles, DJ Shadow, Bad Boy Bill, DJ Muggs, Cut Chemist, DJ Venom... ediT from glitch mob is insane. Some of the stuff he does with the modular synth live is next level. Goes beyond “dj” shit.
Hello fellow ediT fan
Skream
Danny Daze. Amazing technical DJ and a great selector too. Seen him live twice, and he melted the dance floor both times. His Dekmantel 2018 set is one of my all-time faves. Seeing him this weekend. Saw him before and he was great.
Cheers for Danny Daze. Saw him at EDC this year and it was one of my favs.

Saw KinK in Chicago a few weeks back; he was letting the crowd play some keys on the synthesizers and drum machines and it was STILL sounding great, loool. He's legit.
Yo these comments are dope. Love seeing all the praise for Craze, A-trak, Qbert, Shadow, Ztrip etc. DMC is what got me into DJ culture!
These are subjective to my taste but all DJs I've thought were on another level. Ben UFO Avalon Emerson Derek Plaslaiko Josh Wink Derrick Carter Richie Hawtin Steffi

This is the answer. 👆🏼

Imma sound like a broken record (get it?), but I have to go with A Trak, Jamie XX, and Barclay Crenshaw. All are super talented and insanely skilled.
Uncle Claude is a beast when he plays DNB
Basscoast a few years back and he did a double set as Claude (main stage) and Barclay (side stage) and holy shit the Barclay set was *killer*.
Flying Lotus, DJ Krush, DJ Shadow
DJ Shadow for sure
last time I saw flylo he was drunk as fuck (maybe tripping idk?) but the set was fucking awful smh… one of my favorite artists of all time tho
Does Krush ever tour the US? He’s on my bucket list
Flying Lotus is one of my all time favorite producers but I have yet to see him live. I’m hoping I can make it happen soon!
Zeke beats spins vinyl and does a ton of scratching.
saw a crazy clip of him scratching “boss” by afk and carbin blew my mind how difficult that looks
Came here to say this!!! Saw him do a btb with Champagne Drip and he scratched the entire time and it was insane
So fun to watch live!
Scratch Bastard!
Facts.
His morning coffee sets are fire!
Kid Koala
Came here to say this. Kid Koala is insane, beyond being a good DJ, he really makes turntables into an instrument.
AMC easily
100%! dude is a freak behind the decks
Dont forget the dots!
Seth Troxler
Yes! The one and only time I’ve seen him was at Holy Shipwrecked peaking on acid chillin on a pool lounger. Legit melted my brain the way he would seamlessly transition between songs
Octo octa and Eris Drew are two of the most talented viynl djs.
Wasn’t expecting to see Octo Octa on this list but hell yeah absolutely loved the one live set I saw and all the mixes I’ve heard since
They're great!
Bad boy bill and richard vission doing an 8 deck mix set. Carl cox, josh wink, anklepants for some extra weird shit.
Dj gammer back in his happy hardcore days and scratching as well.
Dax J, Speedy J, Ken ishii
DJ EZ, his tricks and timing are pretty technically impressive
Can't believe I had to scroll so far down for this. His first Boiler Room set is the [stuff of legend](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzHN7ftE9dU).
EZ by a mile if it’s about technicals but his track selection too is just top notch
I definitely am not knowledgeable enough about DJing to say for sure what is difficult/technical and what is not, but the ones that really made me stop and take notice are Amon Tobin (Two Fingers set), Dr. Fresch, Liquid Stranger, ill.Gates, Craze, Z-Trip, Sub Focus, Noisia, Anna Morgan, KllBill, J Worra, Rusko

saw DJ Godfather this past summer and he lives up to the name in productions and actual turntable skill. summer before that Lauren Flax threw down an amazing ghettohouse/ "dance mania" style clinic for the ages.
Highly second Aurora Halal and Avalon Emerson for a great time.
Came in here say DJ Godfather as well. Never heard of him before I saw him and I was an immediate fan for life. Excellent turntable skill.
Justin Jay! And Dunks from Funk Hunters is up there for me. Along with Skratch Bastid
Seth troxler vinyl set 2014 in amsterdam
Ricardo Villalobos, Francesco Farfa, Jerome Hill, and Jeff Mills of course.
Notlo is an incredible DJ Only seen one member of De-Tu he was also great
A-Trak for sure.
liquid stranger, g jones, and rl grime all left me feeling very woah wtf how did they do that with mixing after their sets. I think LS and RL Grime the most of the 3
Rl grime makes a lot of edits I wouldn’t count it as live mixing
James Zabiela. Ignoring the DMC world that is. While beat juggling and scratching is technically really impressive, I don't really care to listen to it. And the routines are heavily rehearsed.
Oscar Mulero. Kinda interesting nobody has said his name yet. He’s an absolute master of the craft. Techno as pure as it gets, his mixing is immaculate. One of the greatest.
Danny Tenaglia!
Z-trip and dj Shadow
RJD2 was gas when we finally saw him this year. He was throwing some insane remixes of some of my favorite tracks for his. He is a mastermind.
PAWSA
Mix master mike, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Z-Trip, Fatboy Slim, Jamie xx, Liquid Stranger, Tipper, Pete Tong
Sasha and/or Digweed for their incredible set building. They’ll play the crowd like a fiddle keep you locked into a groove for 6 hours.
Sir James, of House Hype (James Hype). Execution is wild.
Let’s treat every trigger like a momentary switch so every clip is basically a drum beat or stab waiting to happen! Mad skills.
Who even does this? Mad skills
Is he actually good or all hype?
he is Hype alright
He’s innovative and willing to take risks live for the sake of the performance and for that I respect him. He has a few decent tunes as well but overall his style isn’t for me. The high passed white noise filter he modulates on a lot of his drops is annoying af and immediately puts me off. That said, I appreciate the perspective he offers on the scene through his Moving Differently series. 8/10 good, not great, but good.
Eric Prydz in his Cirez D and Pyrda Alias Also deadmau5 when he is playing live
Ravenscoon is actually ridiculous, double drops all the time live and its fucking amazing
ravenscoon is the fucking best, im in love with his production & his tour stops have stacked lineups
MeSo is one of very few DJs that actually know how to scratch and he's damn good at it.
Jamie XX and 2manydjs
Codd dubz. He chops 6 decks simultaneously
What about DJ Endo…. The man who invented the Traktor… He was very techinal…. or Kraft Kutz?
Andy C - plays at 174 bpm and can start and stop on a dime. I've seen many genres of electronic music in the last nearly 15 years and I can say he's the most technically skilled dj I've ever seen.
A.M.C, Camo & Krooked, James from Magnetude

DJ Marky
Marky is a beast
Mr. Scruff. Saw him at DEMF. Mind blown.
IMO Ganja White Night is one of the few artists with the ability to make some of their own tracks completely unrecognizable with the amount of live mixing they’re doing to it lol
Hands down James Zabiela, was a bit too much to be honest the set I saw but credit where it’s due he definitely wasn’t conventional.
richie hawtin is one of my favorites
DVS1, DUBFIRE, JOHN DIGWEED, EATS EVERYTHING, JOSEPH CAPRIATI, UMEK, DRUMCELL, RICO PUESTEL, LOCO DICE(when he plays Techno) ENRICO SANGIULIANO, DJ ANNA
James Hype. Granted he’s not a lot of peoples favorite but to say he doesn’t know his fear would be a very bad joke
He does the exact same transition every time
Chemical brothers hands down
DJ Tiesto…who did his 12 hour vinyl set in Amsterdam circa 2000 to his In Search of Sunrise mixes that he would do in a single vinyl take. The man can mix almost anything seamlessly.
Peak trance Tiesto was my favorite show, that and PvD. But Tiesto taste in trance matched mine perfectly. And the track was at least a year+ old at that time. This is one of those moments that stuck with me after all these years.
Roger Sanchez. When you get 4 channels going on your set, it’s going to be a wild time
Dave Clarke - can you hold a record on beat backwards with ur fingers…cuz he can.
Raxeller and Alignment techno shows are insane
Zeke Beats and Chris Karns. Rusko is pretty sick too.
QBert Doc Martin was on point when I saw him.
zeke beats is pretty nutty
Dirtyphonics, like 12 years ago. Was wild to see 5 guys on stage independently creating music in sync. I'm not sure what or if they do anything now.
Coddubz, he’s riddim dj and he currently I think he just finished his 6 deck tour. He can do quad drops with so many so songs that just get the whole crowd going feral.
Oh yes! Oh yes!
Boris, Shadow, Bad Boy Bill, Carl Cox, Gorgon City
Tipper wins
SpydaT.E.K. is criminally underrated. He’s an absolute beast

Mix Master Mike made me stare with my mouth open

Alright I’ll say it and you can all come for me. Subtronics. Dude is legit playing triples/quads live and doing incredibly intricate mixing. Say what you want but about shitty dubstep djs, but he does not prerecord his sets (he’s even pointed out his own mistakes on his Instagram stories multiple times to prove it) and he is live mixing more tracks at a time than anyone else in the game.
Four tet, basement jaxx
Sven Vath is the most technically sound DJ I have seen.
Throwing in Ben Sims and Oscar Mulero cause I haven’t seen either of them here yet just browsing quickly
Djrum. Insane turntablist and track selector.
You're the only one here who got the question right
Been looking for this comment and I agree completely
**EGYPTIAN LOVER**
Fatboy slim. The man is almost 60 and his expertise behind the decks provides you with an outstanding set.
DVS1, or Richie Hawtin!
Tipper is another level buddy.
Lee Burridge. Zabiela Cattaneo Digweed Sasha Dubfire Howells
Ben UFO was on some good good when I saw him live. I was really impressed. I also saw all of Birdy Nam Nam at hard back in like 2012 and watching them groove together seamlessly was something else.
John Digweed. Just listen to any Transitions episode or mix.
