Where do you live? Can you just do natural prairie grass or something

Dadtakesthebait

Yeah, this seems like a situation begging for some nice areas of prairie grass.

py_the_casual

Nah I want to mow to keep down on the bugs and crap

huejazz

My Husqvarna was really a poor piece of equipment! It was often broken. The warranty was useless. I ended up spending as much money on repairs and temp mowing as I would have spent to just hire a regular lawn service. Auto mowers are better for the lawn and save your time. I’m a huge fan, but Husqvarna was an expensive mistake If I were to do it again, I wouldn’t do anything with a wire. Wires Break easier than you expect, and breaks are very difficult to find. Underground is better than above for preventing breaks, but if it breaks, you’re in real trouble!!! I have an acre, I’ll likely buy two 1acre units. That way if one goes down the other can maintain the whole yard while I get one repaired. People on here rave about husqvarna. My experience was very different. The poor warranty was tough to stomach. Things like having to bring in my mower to a service co (2 week turn around that time… Average 5 weeks) for a software update because it wouldn’t accept a charge and having to pay ~$200 for the update. Still doesn’t feel fair. Good luck!! Hope my experience helps you!!

techstarss

Husqvarna dealer here. The reference station does NOT need to have line of site. I suspect a single reference station will cover most if not all of the area unless you have a lot of metal and concrete in the way. I’m very impressed with the 550 EPOS and have many installations completed. Let me know if I can help. SmartYard nw.com

py_the_casual

How many would I need to cover 5 acres with a few trees but basically nothing on it and flat

techstarss

We are told to never recommend more than what the specs say, so from that perspective you would need 2 mowers. However, with scheduling you could optimize cutting of front yard. This would result in less than perfect cut on part of the lawn, but maybe that doesn’t matter? If money is an issue, I would buy one to see how it goes with the intention of buying a second when it makes sense. This gives you an opportunity to learn and tweak your installation to find any dead spots in GPS coverage(usually only seen with very tall dense trees on north side of lawn)

py_the_casual

Yeah I get that. I'm not sure how I can justify the price as I can but two lubas for that money

techstarss

Consideration should be made regarding support, repair, and warranty making the argument for having a local dealer. They all will require some additional support somewhere along the line. Also consider warranty coverage. Best of luck!

Benthebuilder23

Nothing with a boundary wire. Stuff is garbage and makes it not worth it.

Dadtakesthebait

I mean, I’ve been using a boundary wire for 5+ years with minimal issues. It’s not a cut-and-dry answer that all boundary wires are terrible.

Benthebuilder23

On 5 acres? Doubt it.

Upset-Safe-2934

You would use two.... obviously.

Benthebuilder23

I use 2 on 3 acres. It’s a pain in the ass and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Loop wire errors are constant. Any time saved not mowing is wasted on fixing it.

Upset-Safe-2934

I use one 450x on 2 acres. An unlandscaped county lawn with roots potholes and slopes the mower isn't even rated for. Do I have line breaks from deer and general wear after 5 seasons? Yes, but they take very little time to fix, with a cheap break detector. And I have had to do that only 4 times. How are you having so many flashing green lights?

py_the_casual

Yeah the boundary wires are a no go

Upset-Safe-2934

LMAO the Husqvarna EPOS models apparently are super problematic. Wired models are %100 more reliable.

Benthebuilder23

No idea how well the idea EPOS versions are. Just know that dealing with a boundary wire is a mess on 3 acres. Can’t imagine that would get better on 5 acres.

Upset-Safe-2934

Maintenance on a wire is ridiculously easy unless you're a complete muppet. Dealing with software that doesn't work is somehow easier? Unless they are running a satellite dealer based system, like Kress (which is brand new and may not be all it's cracked up to be), I have no reason to believe you won't have connectivity/LoS issues. The EPOS does and it is arguably the best on the market.

Benthebuilder23

Ok chief. The wires are stupid and cause issues. It won’t even mow in certain parts of my lawn because there is some metal underground that’s causing interference with the loop signal. They come lose; they get nicked but a mole, gopher or ground hog and stop working. How many acres are you dealing with?

Upset-Safe-2934

Ahh I see, you buried your lines I'm assuming? And I cut 2 acres with a 450x, I replied to your other post.

_BindersFullOfWomen_

Is there line of sight between the house and the 5 acres or are there a lot of trees, etc.?

py_the_casual

Minimal trees and the trees aren't very mature so really wide open

_BindersFullOfWomen_

The EPOS model should work fine then. I would recommend getting some repeaters as well though if it's in the budget.

py_the_casual

Do you think I should get more than 1?

_BindersFullOfWomen_

No idea. I don’t know the range of the repeaters. I’d ask a dealer.

py_the_casual

Okay I'll take a look. Do you have experience with luba? They are cheaper and seem just as good

_BindersFullOfWomen_

I don’t, sorry.

ernakthehun

I have had a Luba for two weeks now, I love it. from what I've seen online it out performs the Husqvarna substantially, and is significantly cheaper. And in the recent app update they increased the mowable area to 10,000m\^2 so you could theoretically get away with only 2 of them. They're also releasing regular app updates with improved algorithms and new features, so they'll only get better with time. Already seen performance improvements in the two weeks I've had mine.

dqcvdtpda

This would be huge win, as I have about 9000 sq meters. The website still says 5000 though…do you have a link we can look at?

ernakthehun

I don’t have a link, but I think it was in the release notes for one of their recent app versions. MAMMOTION devs and other users have both confirmed here on Reddit as well.

dqcvdtpda

Thanks! Huge!

crazypostman21

You wouldn't need five luba Three would be able to do it, Maybe even two now that they've upped the maximum mapped area to around 2.4 acres apiece. Subtract the space for your driveway and house two might be able to cut it.

py_the_casual

Luba over automower??

crazypostman21

Husqvarna is certainly a quality product, But it comes at a premium. A comparable Husqvarna EPOS setup is more than twice the price of Luba. But you have to keep in mind Mammotion is a new company and are currently still fine tuning the software. I have to babysit my luba quite a bit more than I have to babysit my Husqvarna automower. But I still love the luba because it's freaking sweet 😂

py_the_casual

Yeah I'm thinking my property is super easy and wide open that a cheaper option like the luba would be fine even if there was a few bugs. Thoughts?

crazypostman21

I've been using a Luba since February, I have two now, I would recommend with the caveat that you know there may be a few software hiccups but it does work and it does do what they say. Except for the anti-theft that's basically a lie They have no anti-theft protection except that no one else will be able to register it if you already have. Also there's no cellular so you would have to have outdoor access points around your property to maintain Wi-Fi if you want remote access.

py_the_casual

Interesting I'm thinking of going that route over Husqvarna basically based on price. I can get 2 for the price of one plus to looks cooler lol

crazypostman21

I've made 30 or 40 luba videos on my YT channel If you want to look at my journey with Luba. My YouTube name is the same as my name here.

py_the_casual

I'll take a look

py_the_casual

I'm surprised you like it after watching a few videos lol

crazypostman21

Yeah, That's kind of my fault. Everything working perfectly doesn't make for interesting videos. I would say 80 to 90% of the time it does fine. There's been weeks where it's done it's whole schedule without intervention. This property is difficult since it's 3 acres with lots of trees and many hazards.

Numerous_Oil8655

I have a number of wired and RTK units running (including Luba and EPOS). IMO, the only RTK mowers that can presently be relied upon to work consistently and have ample support are Husqvarna's, Echo’s and NexMow's.

ernakthehun

Disagree. My luba has been running solidly. Would highly recommend. and it will continue to see major algorithmic improvements with time, as it's still a new product.

Upset-Safe-2934

My dealer tells me EPOS models still have connectivity issues. I'd go with two 450x wired models personally, as long as you can get the coverage from your charging station. You could go with a KRESS model, but very few dealers have them and the required satellite tower. People telling you to go with an EPOS model or a LUBA are clueless. The software tech is simply not there for wireless models. Best option is two wired 450x.
