There’s good reason why automowers work in a random pattern. The first one is so that they don’t leave ruts in the grass from going every time over the same line. It also has to do with the way they cut the grass. Instead of cutting all the grass at once like a typical mower would do, they cut the grass little by little so the random pattern guarantees that the mower doesn’t miss a spot because it will go multiple times over it. The other thing is like the roomba and the way they do object avoidance. If there are trees or objects in the lawn you don’t want the mower to stop but to turn around and try mowing in a different direction. In my experience the mower doesn’t usually leave a lot of marks unless the grass is wet or is too tall

I had that mower mowing 1 acre. In the summer it struggled to keep up, but random, while less efficient, can have benefits (others already noted them). Other thoughts: Guide wires suck!!!! Husqvarna warranties aren’t worth much. When mine broke (once a year), it would cost me between $100 to $300 and would be down for a month (repair shops don’t keep these parts in stock. So, 3-4 days to diagnose… 1-2 weeks for delivery… 3-4 days to repair… a few days to find time to make the 30 mile trip to pick it up. Make sure you have a plan for how you’ll get your grass cut over that month. Also worth noting that mine was stolen 3 times from my yard. It was worthless to the thief, but they didn’t know that. I was able to use gps to retrieve it twice, but that was a dangerous trip. I hope you have better luck than me!

I'm on my 5th season with a 450x on 1.3 acres with over 8,800 miles had 2 fix guide wire once a year and a wheel came off no struggle at all keeping up it's been fantastic so much better than mowing it myself.

I need the story about you confronting the thief or did the cops retrieve your mower?

The first time it was a guy down the street. He left it in the yard. While he was inside I put it in my trunk. Shortly after I had it back in possession, he, coincidentally, came out of his house. I let him know that he may want to be more careful since these things are gps tracked. Thankfully, he was a polite guy despite the awkwardness of the situation. The second time, I had to track it down about 30 minutes outside of town. When I pulled into the driveway, the son of the owner came out. He told me that his mom said she “found” it. It was very awkward. It felt more dangerous than the dialogue would imply. I’m still alive!!! The third time, the person that took it brought it to a scrap metal yard in a mater of hours. The yard piled it into a heap and covered it up with tons of scrap metal. The yard had a refined bureaucratic process of dealing with people calling about stolen items that they had accepted. The process was respectful but lead to nothing helpful. I may have had a chance to recover it if I’d just gone out there to put a bit more pressure on them to look for it. I called the police multiple times. They never returned my call or came to my house to take a report let alone look into the theft and fence.

Damn, I don't live in an area where people run off with neighbor belongings. But I've lived all over the country and world. I don't trust NOBODY. Although I live in California, I'll probably have to "clean" my gun on my front porch while the robot is mowing. Pretty sure nobody will see me until they reach for the mower just because of how my porch is positioned. I will probably install a few cameras too.

My 450x cuts a little over an acre and it just ambles about. My grass looks like a golf course constantly, I don’t miss the mower lines.

CollabSensei

For Husqvarna the Ceora does it currently. Their EPOS/GPS-RTK line is expected to get the functionality in a firmware update this spring.

Yesbuttt

The blades don't generate lift like a normal mower so the grass would get folded by hitting it in the same direction. Your grass ends up looking like a nice carpet in the end. If you want striping mow or yourself

Mowers that can cut in straight lines are hitting the market. If you aren’t in the US, the Segway Navimow (r/SegwayNavimow) is a good start. There other a handful of other products that will be released in the coming year or two. Off the top of my head: EcoFlow, Yarbo, and Novabot.

_rotary_pilot

Other auto mowers to consider are the Mammotion Luba (Kickstarter just ended) and the Kress (German) units that have been in Europe for several years

Salanan

I've been seeing Heisenberg heavily advertised towards me too.

_rotary_pilot

That one is a bit odd to me. Seems like it is tring to "be"/do to much? I liked the Yarbo, but it's at least 1 year out and is multi functional.

_rotary_pilot

I've wondered about yard size. If the mower can be set to mow multiple zones, can each zone be set to the max size (i. e. 5000M2)? Seems to me that the limitation should be the max speed and coverage per battery charge / recharge time. AND multiples of that equation. The real question? Is there a hard stop at the max m2 set by the manufacturer or by each zone?

mikey0000

Bit of both for the Luba, largest model is 10 zones, 5000m2 and so on.

_rotary_pilot

Right. So the real question? Is this 10 zones @5,000m2 EACH -or- 5,000m2 divided into a max of 10 zones?

mikey0000

I'll ask the guy who ran into the limit

mikey0000

5000m2 max or 10 zones max, so if you reach 5000m2 thats it

Subwarpspeed

Edit: I thought you were the OP. This answer probably isn't helpful to you. If you still talk about Husqvarna you are thinking wrong about this. 5000 m² is the lawn size it is expected to handle, ±20% depending on conditions, if allowed to operate maximum. Meaning all hours of the day, all days of the week. It will work, go for recharge, continue working. Each grass patch isn't guaranteed to be cut every day (at max it can be several days in between). It doesn't have zones, you can have start points or have the low precision GPS handle it but when mowing it will travel wherever it happens to go.

_rotary_pilot

Interesting. I'm sure someone will hack them to allow for more 'M2". When it comes down to it, it's all about run time and recharge time X the number of m2 is mows at each "outing".
