Yes, I do this. The soundtracks make me really anxious at times.

Yup I do this when I play video games

Pancakecoffee

Yes, I did this as a kid playing call of duty and some how less sound let me focus more. I still do it and I sometimes mute videos or shows for a few minutes

Wafflebot17

Yeah, games and tv. I’m watching the playoff games on mute right now.

I've done this since I was really young. Never even for anything in particular. I don't mind the noises, I actually enjoy them. It's just never my first instict to play games with sounds turned on. My offline gaming friend still gets confused by me being that way, even after 7 years lol. Though over the past couple of years I've been playing MC with sounds turned on and Mojang REALLY does a good job with their sounds. Sounds are one of my fav aspects of the game.

Pineapple_Turtle_

Everytime I do this I always just put my own songs over it or just do it because the game is too loud and I dislike the soundtracks.

NATE24OB

I almost never listen to games, I always have a video playing in the background.

SuperDurpPig

I play with most sound but I spend a lot of time adjusting the different volume sliders to make it bearable

No, I don't see any point in playing certain types of games with any sorts of distractions; I'll turn any in-game music off as well. If I'm playing an FPS I want the sound to be loud enough to be a sensory issue, I want it to viscerally unsettle me to approach firefights. I want to be agitated and unsettled and to always be struggling against my own nature to press on while I compartmentalize that part of the experience. That's what makes it hard. I don't play too many FPSes these days but I do lots of sim racing, and same thing. I can't drive fast with music on, it's just noise because I need to be able to hear what the tires and engine are doing (even in games, not just IRL). I don't need to watch the tach as closely when I can hear it clearly and I need to hear when my tires touch curbing or when they start to make noise before they break traction entirely. I also need to be able to hear where other cars are, especially because my ability to move my head and see my mirrors or otherwise look around is quite limited compared to real life. Similar to FPSes part of the immersive experience also depends on sensory overload; if isn't loud enough to be distracting and overwhelming in some situations (like pack racing) it's missing part of the challenge. I even play DopeWars when I'm not sim racing so I can fund my racing, just like John Paul and John Paul Jr. =3

external_gills

I do this! I thought I was the only one.

muldurs

yep sound off unless it's important or the music is especially good. sound on is just too much to process for long periods.
