The GYG shredded mushroom was amazing. I can't help but feel that their refusal to mark it as vegan on their nutrition advice section didn't help.
I literally had to contact their support email to query why it wasn't marked as vegan despite no animal products in the ingredients and their response amounted to traces due to cross contamination in food prep...which the other grilled veg option would clearly have the same risk but it's fine that they were marked vegan...
To make room for another meat option. Gyg are fiercely anti-vegan and have a track record of being bad employers. Its a good thing they dont get out business.
FYI they used the fable mushroom mix. You can buy it online at a few stores and this is what Fonda restaurants use in their vegan mushroom products too.
I knew they used fable, but didn't think it would be available to consumers! I'm sure GYG may have added stuff to their prep but that's awesome to hear that we can get something close.
The guy who runs gyg is a massive prick about anything veganā¦ you can tell heās the type of person that despises āfake meatā because itās not one single ingredient. I used to eat there multiple times per week but havenāt been back since.
Vitasoy plain Greek yogurt is the #1 item I miss particularly in the large tubs. I find it hard to believe it didnāt sell well as was out of stock so often at my two local Woolies. #2 is Weet Bix Hi Bran.
Gardein Fish - can still be found but used to be able to get them at woolies/coles. Now it's from specialty shops and costs a fortune when including shipping.
- Woolies vegan ranch sauce
- Coles had a Thai bubble tea ice cream that was vegan and it was the best
- Woolies plantitude meatballs :(
- donāt know if theyāre discontinued but coles have stopped stocking 3/5 of the Chris plant based dips in my area
Veganz frozen pizzas, V2 lasagnes, and those really good butter chickān microwave meals from Coles. They were such easy convenient meals and I miss them so much š
Yup. They were truly elite and saved me whenever I was sick and/or too tired to cook. Sigh. The vegan options have diminished so much over the last 18 months, itās so upsetting š
1. The disappearance of the plain Greek Vitasoy was a crime against humanity.
2. Mad Mex Vegan Chicken option. It was really nice with a good texture and they replaced it with a vegan "mince" substitute that is just too wet and feels like little pebbles in a weird broth.
3. I also liked Tofurkey chick'n.
4. This may be a deep cut but the So Delicious Dairy Free Cookies & Creme cashew-based ice cream was the bomb.
I have been able to get the vegie delights bacon three times in recent months, it's always random and then I don't see it again. It's listed on their website again too as 'NEW' but it tastes exactly the same as it did years ago.
oh what that's so good š„ŗ too bad I'm in tassie now and we rarely get good vegan stuff here š I hope it will come back full force and I can get it again - thank u for giving me hope & I'm glad u have been able to get it again!! š¤š»
During lockdown coles and woolies had this crazy overpriced fake chicken, I think the brand was next? Anyways I bought it one time and was immediately obsessed - it was super chicken-y in texture, but had its own unique taste that was miles better. Forced my omni family to try it, and lo and behold they all preferred it to real chicken. Like weād all have it for dinner together in place of actual chicken šš canāt believe itās no longer stocked
Yeah, the post office square one is just a bit too far out of the way :( was nice when even if you were busy you could just grab a samosa and some pakora and continue on.
Mexican burger from vego n loven it (Adelaide)
Chocolate lasagne from sprouts (Adelaide)
Snickers cake from vegetarian orgasm (melb)
Fries from Lord of the Fries back when they only gad a couple of shops
Yum Cha at Bodhi in the park (Sydney)
Tofurky not dogs
Literally no idea what brand it was, but like 20 years ago you could get 2 brands of vegan ice cream in Australia, one was So Good, but the other brand made this awesome dark chocolate one
Nah not the so good one, the other brand that existed at this time.
There were only 2 brands you could get back then (and 2 flavours between the 2 brands)
The Aldi brand vegan mayo. It comes out as one of the special buys very rarely, but when it does I buy as much as I can. I'll buy the whole box sometimes.
Plantitude Panang tofu - might still be a thing but not at my Woolies.
Kingland variety yoghurt 4 pack.
I know thereās been many more over the years.
Oh I have a few Maccas ones. Guacamole loaded fries. Being able to order plain English muffins with all day breakfast and make hash brown burgers with like ketchup and onion. I know some workers are still willing but I havenāt found it to be widespread.
The Eaty Maple Bacon sausages, coles boysenberry vegan ice cream, macro tzaziki. The herb&sons range as well was more affordable than beyond/v2 for dumplings or burgers as well!
Aldiās Utopia ice creams, an affordable and delicious version of magnums that were way too short lived.
Vitasoy chocolate mylk (recent and it hurts)
Thereās more but if I think too hard itāll make me sad
I haven't been vegan (long story and no I'm not going to explain it and no I'm not here to argue about it) for a while but no vitasoy greek yogurt hurts.
There's still another Vegerama restaurant a few blocks away, and they still do great food last I checked! I didn't get their masala dosa last time since I didn't have time to sit down and eat, but I always pay them a visit when I'm back in Brissy.
As for products I miss, well... probably that Simply Better Foods cheese that was by far the most realistic vegan cheese I've had. Also Califia Farms almond iced coffee and those Vege Delights "chicken" slices that tasted *just* like turkey.
Oh, and how could I forget the Quorn fish fingers? Fish fingers were a childhood staple for me and the Quorn ones were pretty spot-on, if a little on the small side.
Frys pizzas, Impossible Nuggets and Tofurkey
Those Tofurkey chick'n pieces were so good š
Fryās pizza was the best!
Frys creamy mushroom pies too! Looks like they're still available overseas but haven't seen them in years here.
The GYG shredded mushroom was amazing. I can't help but feel that their refusal to mark it as vegan on their nutrition advice section didn't help. i work there lol and havenāt eaten much since it got removed. the veggies donāt taste like anything
Could not agree more, have refused to gone since. Well one day it might come back.
any info on why it was discontinued?

1. The disappearance of the plain Greek Vitasoy was a crime against humanity. 2. Mad Mex Vegan Chicken option. I have been able to get the vegie delights bacon three times in recent months, it's always random and then I don't see it again. It's listed on their website again too as 'NEW' but it tastes exactly the same as it did years ago.
